LSC Championships Previews: Session 1  

The 2012 LSC Basketball Championships have invaded the city of Allen, Texas. And it all gets started Wednesday with two games in the afternoon session. Here are the previews for Session 1 on the men’s side.

Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012 – Session 1

Quarterfinal #1 (Noon)

(3) West Texas A&M vs. (6) Eastern New Mexico

Records: West Texas A&M 18-7 overall (12-6 in LSC) / Eastern New Mexico 14-13 overall (7-11 in LSC)
Regular season series: The team spilt the season series, playing consecutive games in mid-January as a part of Rivalry Week. The Buffaloes edged ENMU 71-68 in Canyon on Jan. 18, but the Greyhounds returned the favor with a 68-66 win on Jan. 21.

Honor Roll: (WT) West Texas A&M not only placed two players on the All-LSC 2^nd team in forward Donald Sims and guard Lionel Foster, but the Buffaloes garnered a pair of post-season awards. Sims was named LSC Newcomer of the Year and guard Tez Dumars was named LSC Freshman of the Year. Guard Kennon Washington was named All-LSC honorable mention. (ENMU) Senior guard Reggie Nelson, who ranked second in the LSC in scoring at 16.2 ppg, was a first-team All-LSC selection. Senior center Curtis Wilkerson was an honorable mention pick.

About the Buffaloes: After a 6-5 start in LSC play, West Texas A&M reeled off six straight wins, including a pair of upsets over teams ranked No. 5 in the nation at the time. WT edged LSC co-champions Tarleton State and Midwestern State in a four-day span . . . The Buffaloes’ bid for seven-straight wins to cap the regular season ended with a 68-61 loss last Saturday at Cameron . . . The Buffaloes rank last in the LSC in scoring at 64.9 ppg, but make up for it defensively, holding teams to a 57.9 scoring average – second only to Tarleton State (56.9) . . . WT leads the LSC with a 7.1 rebound margin per game . . . Donald Sims ranks in the top 5 in three conference categories, including first in rebounding (9.5),seventh in scoring (14.0) and third in field goal percentage (.637).  Sims and Lionel Foster have garnered more minutes than any player in the LSC, averaging 34.4 and 34.2 minutes per game, respectively.
About the Greyhounds: Eastern New Mexico is seeking its first win in the LSC Championship since 2003 and trying to improve a 6-12 all-time record in this tournament . . . After starting the season 9-3, the Greyhounds struggled in LSC play, including losing five of the last six games . . . ENMU ranks second in the LSC in scoring at 73.3 points per game, only behind co-champion MSU (74.3 pgg) . . . The Greyhounds lead the LSC in 3-pointers, hitting 7.1 treys per game . . . Senior Reggie Nelson is the LSC’s leading 3-point shooter, hitting .435 percent of his attempts . . Nelson has six games this year with 25 points or more, including a 25-point effort in a losing cause to WT . . . Senior center Curtis Wilkinson leads the LSC in blocked shots average, swatting 1.7 per game . . . Wilkinson had a 20-rebound game against Incarnate Word in January.

(2) Tarleton State vs. (7) Texas A&M-Kingsville

Records: Tarleton State 24-4 overall (15-3 in LSC) / Texas A&M Kingsville 12-15 overall (7-11 in LSC)
Regular season series: Tarleton swept the season series over the Javelinas with a 72-70 road win on Dec. 7 in Kingsville, followed by a 63-52 win on Feb. 1 in Stephenville.

Honor Roll: (TSU) Senior forward Fabian Wilson was a first-team All-LSC selection. Senior guard Chris Harrell picked up an All-LSC second-team selection. (TAMUK) Junior guard Ashton Brown and senior forward Robert Williams were both picked as All-LSC honorable mention.

About the Texans: TSU racked up 17 straight wins in the middle of the season, including the first 11 conference games . . . The Texans were 18-1 at home this season at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville . . .Senior forward Fabian Wilson ranks in the Top 10 in several categories. Wilson is 10^th in scoring (13.3), third in rebounding (7.0), seventh in field goal percentage (.528) and seventh in blocked shots (0.9). . . Tarleton is the LSC’s No. 1 scoring defense, allowing teams to score just 56.9 points per game . . . TSU also leads the conference in scoring margin, at +12.9 . . .
About the Javelinas: Kingsville returns to action after a 10-day layoff. The regular season ended on Feb. 19 against ACU . . . Junior guard Ashton Brown in the nation’s leader in free throw percentage at .961 percent, making 124 of 129 charity tosses, including 42 straight during the regular season . . . Brown has helped Kingsville become the LSC’s top free-throw shooting team at .724 . . . The Javelinas are the worst team in the LSC in rebounding, with a -2.1 margin . . . Brown and Robert Williams rank fifth and sixth in the LSC in scoring at 14.5 and 14.2 points per game, respectively . . . Junior guard Ryan Layssard is third in the LSC in assists at 3.8 apg . . . Falling behind in games hasn’t been good to the Javelinas, who are just 2-10 in games they’ve trailed at halftime.

LSC Basketball Weekly Release: It's tourney time! - LSC Office

The Lone Star Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship is this week at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.  The top eight teams have advanced to the LSC Championship Tournament and the postseason begins with first-round games on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

Midwestern State and Tarleton State shared the LSC men’s title with identical 15-3 records.  MSU is the No. 1 seed by virtue of two wins over Incarnate Word, who defeated Tarleton.  On the women’s side, Tarleton State claimed the No. 1 seed and LSC championship with a 17-3 mark.
  
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com, as well as the Allen Event Center box office. Single-session tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Premium seating options are available as well, with more details available at: www.lonestarconference.org/allen.

NCAA BASKETBALL STATISTICS (through games 02/23)

• Tarleton State tops the nation in field-goal percentage defense (37.6).
• Midwestern State leads NCAA Division II in three-point field-goal defense (26.5).
• Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Ashton Brown is shooting 96.1 percent from the free throw line (124-129), which leads the nation.
• Tarleton State’s Peyton Adamson is shooting 92.7 percent from the free throw line (76-82), which leads NCAA Division II.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CO-MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Fabian Wilson, Tarleton State University, SR, Forward, New Orleans, La., Creekside HS
Wilson averaged 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds a game as Tarleton won a pair of games to clinch a share of the LSC Championship... The senior forward finished his regular season career in style with an 18-point, 12-rebound performance at Angelo State on Wednesday, and a 26-point night in Saturday’s win over Abilene Christian. Wilson shot 60.9 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and hit 14-of-17 free throw attempts.

Devondrick Walker, Texas A&M University - Commerce, SO, Forward, Garland, Texas, Garland HS
Walker led the Lions to a pair of wins, leading A&M-Commerce in scoring in both games. Walker had 17 points against Abilene Christian and a career-high 24 points in the win over Angelo State. He shot 11-of-19 from the floor (.579) and 4-of-8 from three-point range (.500), but was key from the free throw line in both wins, hitting 15 of his 16 free throws (.938). He also averaged five rebounds per game while dishing out a career-best three assists in the win over the Rams to clinch the eight spot in the conference tournament.

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Chris Harrell, Tarleton State University, SR, Guard, Elgin, Texas, Elgin HS
Harrell anchored a Texan defense that led Tarleton to a share of the LSC title. The senior guard recorded two steals and 10 defensive rebounds over the two-game stretch in which the Texans won a pair of LSC contests. Harrell also averaged 12.0 points and recorded five assists to help out.

WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Paige Weishuhn, Angelo State University, SR, Center, Wall, Texas, Wall HS
Weishuhn was unstoppable against No. 1 seed Tarleton State as the senior tied a career-high with 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting in the Belles 70-63 victory of the TexAnns last Wednesday, snapping ASU’s five-game losing streak. The Wall native also added her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds and tied a personal-best with four assists in that contest in her final home game as a Belle. Weishuhn followed that performance with 13 points at Texas A&M-Commerce last week, despite sitting out most of the game with foul trouble. For the week, she averaged 21 PPG along with 7.0 rebounds per contests and tied the team-lead with six assists while shooting 50.0 percent (14-28) from the field and 75.0 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.

WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Haylee Oliver, Angelo State University, FR, Forward, San Saba, Texas, San Saba HS
Oliver had her first double-double of the season against No. 1 seed Tarleton State last Wednesday in the Belles 70-63 win over the TexAnns, snapping its five-game losing streak. The freshman had 13 points and 13 rebounds (10 defensive) while helping the Belles hold the TexAnns to nearly 10 points less than their average and holding the league’s second-best 3-point shooting team to only 4-of-16 shooting for the contest. Oliver also had a block on her stat line.

LSC Showcase to debut Sunday on Fox Sports Southwest - LSC Office
The first installment of the Lone Star Conference Showcase is set to air on Fox Sports Southwest Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.  The 30-minute magazine-style television show is part of the league’s partnership with Fox Southwest, which also includes television advertising and live web streaming.

     
“We are tremendously excited about the debut of Lone Star Conference Showcase and the great exposure it will bring to the conference and its member schools,” said LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon.  “The LSC has a proud past and we think it has an even brighter future, and this partnership with Fox Sports Southwest gives us an excellent opportunity to share the good news about our conference throughout the region.”
     
The showcase is set up to contain previews of upcoming league events, highlights from recent conference action and features on LSC student-athletes, coaches and communities.  The first edition hosted by FS Southwest’s Dana Larson will talk about the LSC and its purpose, before diving into next week’s men’s and women’s basketball championship. A closer look at the tournament schedule, plus players and teams to watch will wrap up the segment.
     
Next, the spotlight shifts to the City of Allen and the Allen Event Center, which is the new home of the LSC Basketball Championship tournament.  The show concludes with a rundown of the spring sports, along with details on the Lone Star Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium, which made a successful debut last September and returns in 2012 as a two-day, six-game event.  In addition to the original programming on Feb. 26, the show will re-air on Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. and March 17. The next LSC Showcase is set to air during the week of May 21.

KING, DAVIS HONORED AS CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS - TAMC MBB

Texas A&M University-Commerce senior forward Desmond King and junior forward Andrew Davis are among the 15 players named Capital One Division II Academic All-Americans for men's basketball, announced by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America. King was named a first team Academic All-American, with Davis picking up third-team honors.

"I'm incredibly proud of both Desmond and Andrew as they continue to excel both on the court as well as the classroom," said head coach Sam Walker. "They have been leaders on this team all season long and are proving to be excellent role models that you can be successful in both facets as a student-athlete. They deserve to have this recognition."

A&M-Commerce was the only school in the country to have a pair of players named to the Academic All-American team. Voting was done by sports information professionals across the country as only players who were first team all-district selections were eligible for the national ballot.

Softball season carries on with a full slate of non-conference games this week.  West Texas A&M is playing five games at the Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., this weekend including a top-5 matchup with North Georgia, which will be streamed live on ESPN3.com Saturday at 9 a.m.
  
LSC softball teams are 72-35 overall this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 46-24 overall including 25-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 15-9 opposed to the Great American Conference and 6-3 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CO-HITTER
Morgan Spearman, Angelo State University, SO, Outfield, Kennadale, Texas, Kennadale HS
Spearman hit two game-winning grand slams on Friday to help propel the 16th-ranked Angelo State softball team to a 3-0 week at the South Central Shootout. The Belles trailed No. 12 Arkansas at Monticello 6-3 in the top of the seventh until Spearman hit her first career grand slam. ASU went on to earn a 9-6 victory. Hours later, Spearman did it again. This time the Belles trailed Henderson State 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, but the sophomore changed that with a swing of the bat. She took the first pitch over the center-field wall to secure a 5-3 win.

Brown has one of her best weekends of her career at the plate as the No. 5 Lady Buffs went 5-1 in the Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas. The senior catcher hit .563 with three doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI for a slugging percentage of 1.500. Brown also walked three times, putting her just 32 away from the NCAA Division II career record. In the opening game win against New Mexico Highlands on Sunday afternoon, Brown went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a home run to drive in six runs in the 10-1 run rule win.

CO-PITCHER
Marci Womack, West Texas A&M University, SR, Pitcher, Sulphur Springs, Texas, Sulphur Springs HSWomack continued to dominate in the circle as the No. 5 Lady Buffs went 5-1 this past weekend at the Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas. The senior right-hander threw 16.0 innings in three wins, giving up three runs on eight hits with 15 strikeouts and just four walks for an ERA of 0.88 in three complete games with one shutout. The Sulphur Springs, Texas native followed up her first career no hitter last weekend with a one hitter in the tournament opener against #24 Colorado School of Mines in a 9-1 WT win. Womack moved to 5-0 on the season with an ERA of 0.54 with 33 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .129 with five complete games and two shutouts.

Peyton Mosley, Abilene Christian University, SO, Pitcher, Coppell, Texas, Coppell HSMosley won both of ACU’s games at the rain-shortened invitational hosted by Midwestern State, first as a starter versus the No. 20 Mustangs, and then as a reliever against Fort Hays State. The Wildcats won each of their games in come-from-behind fashion thanks to Mosley’s gutsy efforts in the circle. Mosley was roughed up a little by the Mustangs in game one as they jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but afterward she allowed just four more hits over the next eight innings. Two of those hits came in the seventh as the Mustangs loaded the bases with one out, but Mosley left them all stranded by getting consecutive infield pop-ups. Then, in the ninth, with ACU clinging to a 4-3 lead, she left the game-tying run stranded at third base with a fly ball to center. Mosley’s clutch pitching abilities continued into the game versus Fort Hays State, as head coach Bobby Reeves brought her into the game in the fifth with no outs, runners at second and third, and the Wildcats trailing 4-0. Mosley responded to the challenge by striking out the first two batters she faced, and then got an infield pop up to squash the scoring threat. She then retired the side in order in the sixth, and left another runner stranded in scoring position in the seventh. The Wildcats won the game for Mosley by scoring seven times in the bottom of the seventh.

Dawson scores 9 points in NBA debut at Portland - MSU MBB

PORTLAND, Ore. - Former Midwestern State All American Eric Dawson scored nine points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked a shot in his National Basketball Association debut Tuesday night at the Rose Garden.  The 6-9 forward played 32 minutes for the San Antonio Spurs who dropped a 137-97 decision to snap an 11-game winning streak.

Dawson becomes the second Midwestern State product to appear in an NBA game joining former standout Gary Suiter, who averaged 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds for the original Cleveland Cavaliers over 30 games during the 1970-71 season.  Dawson is the 10th Lone Star Conference alum to appear in an NBA game and the first since Central Oklahoma's Eddie Robinson scored 1,938 points for the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls from 1999-2004.

Report: Rice hires defensive line coach - Houston Chronicle

The Owls plan to hire Angelo State defensive line coach Michael Slater to the same position.  Slater spent three seasons (2008-10) as a graduate assistant with Rice, where he worked with the defensive line and was responsible for scouting reports and breaking down defensive film. Before that, Slater spent 12 years coaching high school at Alief Hastings (1996-2001) and Alief Taylor (2001-08).

Lone Star Conference baseball teams continue non-conference action this week.  The weather postponed or cancelled a few games scheduled for last week.
  
LSC baseball teams are 44-17 overall this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 23-9 overall including 7-1 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 16-8 opposed to the Great American Conference and 0-0 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

DIAMOND PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTERS
Joe Huwer, Eastern New Mexico University, SR, First Base, Boise, Idaho, Timberline HS/Wenatchee Valley
Huwer turned in a stellar week, to lead the Greyhounds to three wins in four games. He led Eastern with 11 hits and one homer; and tied for the lead with seven runs batted in and a triple. In ENMU’s 14-7 victory over New Mexico Highlands, he doubled, tripled and drove in a run. In the loss to the Cowboys, he added two hits, including a go-ahead, three-run homer. Huwer had multiple hits in all four games and batted seven-for-11 against University of the Southwest.

Jordan Easom, West Texas A&M University, SR, INF, Keller, Texas, Keller HS
Easom guided the Buffs to a 4-1 record over the weekend, collecting nine hits in 16 at bats for a .562 batting average. The Keller native tallied five doubles and a solo home run, while driving in a team-high nine runs-batted-in. Easom went 7-for-11 with runners on base and was 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Playing shortstop for the Buffs, Easom recorded 6 putouts in the field and tallied 17 assists as well.

PITCHERS
Jake Feckley, Angelo State University, SO, RHP, Wylie, Texas, Wylie HS
Feckley owned the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm in his start against the former LSC foe last Friday with seven innings of shutout baseball. Feckley struck out nine, held SOSU to a .087 batting average and carried a perfect game for 5.2 innings in the 5-0 series-opening win. The two-hit complete game was the first of the season for the Rams. The sophomore transfer from Texas A&M has now struck out 16 batters in three appearances and 13.2 innings of work this season. He possesses a 1.98 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .157 average at the plate.

Kuks pitched 5.0 solid innings for the Buffs in a 15-1 decision over Colorado School of Mines on Sunday. The senior opened the game striking out seven of the first nine batters he faces and finished the game with nine strikeouts and just one walk. He allowed just the one run while scattering six hits to collect his second win of the season.

LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Championship berths up for grabs in final week

Only one week remains in the Lone Star Conference basketball season.  Nine teams with five men’s - Tarleton State, Midwestern State, Cameron, Incarnate Word and West Texas A&M - and four women’s - Tarleton, MSU, WT and CU - have clinched a berth in the championship to be played Feb. 29 - March 4 at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.  The remaining seven berths will be decided this week.
    
On the men’s side, MSU leads the way at 14-2 in conference games and the Mustangs can clinch an outright LSC championship with two wins this week.  To earn the No. 1 seed in next week’s tournament, MSU needs one win or a Tarleton loss.
    
Tarleton has claimed at least a share of the women’s title at 16-2 in league play, and needs one win this week to sew up the No. 1 seed.
    
The LSC’s agreement with Fox Sports Southwest includes Saturday’s doubleheader between West Texas A&M and Cameron starting at 2 p.m.  The games will be streamed live on FoxSportsSouthwest.com and are available to fans free of charge.  The Buffs/Lady Buffs and Aggies played Jan. 14 in Canyon, Texas, with the CU men and women pickup up close road victories, as each games was decided by four points.
    
The LSC men have a 146-103 overall record so far this season, with Tarleton having only two losses.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 29-14 overall including 17-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 8-1 opposed to the Great American Conference and 4-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
    
The LSC women are 134-133 overall, with MSU at 14-4 with the overall best record. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 27-19 overall including 17-11 combined versus Heartland teams, 9-5 opposed to the Great American and 1-3 against the MIAA.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Kennon Washington, West Texas A&M University, JR, Guard, Mobile, Ala., W.P. Davidson HS
Washington led the Buffs to a 2-0 mark this past week with wins against Texas A&M-Commerce on the road and No. 5 Tarleton State in Canyon on Saturday night. The junior guard averaged 19.0 points and  7.0 rebounds while dishing out six assists and registering three steals. Washington went 11-of-14 from the free throw line and 3-of-8 from deep to shoot 45 percent from the floor during the two WT wins. Against Tarleton, Washington exploded for 22 points, six rebounds, and three assists as the Buffs topped the Texans. Washington hit some huge threes down the stretch and went 7-of-9 from the charity stripe to seal the win.


MEN’S DEFENSIVE
David Terrell, Midwestern State University, SR, Forward, Houston, Texas, Worthing HS
Terrell played a key role in one of the best defensive performances of the season for No. 7 Midwestern State in a 69-48 win over Central Oklahoma. MSU frustrated the Bronchos, who came on a five-game winning streak, to 32.6-percent shooting from the floor. Terrell pulled down eight rebounds, made two steals and had a blocked shot as the Mustangs held UCO to an opponent output for 2011-12.


WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Mack Lankford, Abilene Christian University, SO, Guard, Weatherford, Texas, Weatherford HS
ACU sophomore guard Mack Lankford kept the Wildcats alive in the race for the LSC Championship Tournament, leading the Wildcats to a pair of wins last week over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville. ... In a 76-59 road win over UIW last Wednesday, Lankford scored 25 points to lead the Wildcats to the victory. ... She was 4 for 6 from 3-point range in the win and dished out four assists and had three steals. ... In Sunday afternoon’s 79-64 home win over Kingsville, Lankford might have played one of the best games of her ACU career, scoring a career-high 38 points while pulling down eight rebounds, dishing out five assists, coming up with one blocked shot and picking up five steals. ... She finished the week as a 50-percent shooter from 3-point range (8 of 16) and shot 47.6 percent from the field overall ( 20 of 42).


WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Sabelle Diata, Cameron University, SR, Forward, Dakar, Senegal, Northeastern Junior College
Diata was a force against the Pioneers, finishing the game with eight rebounds, six blocks and one steal. The Senegal native’s post play helped Cameron to hold Texas Woman’s to only three field goals in 20 attempts (.150 fg percentage) in the second half during its 54-48 victory. Diata is the focal point for an Aggie defense that has consistently been ranked in the top-10 in the nation for more of the season.
