SAN ANGELO – Pierce Holt, a two-time NFL All-Pro selection, member of two Super Bowl championship teams, and inductee in the College Football Hall of Fame, will be bringing his experience to the Angelo State sidelines as the fifth assistant hired by new Rams’ head coach Will Wagner. Holt will serve as a volunteer defensive assistant.
Holt was twice named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year and earned two First Team All-America selections while starring on the gridiron for Angelo State. His collegiate efforts helped him earn a place in the LSC Hall of Fame, NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. After being selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1988 NFL Draft, Holt was twice named the team’s defensive player of the year while helping Bill Walsh’s squad win two Super Bowls. Holt led the Atlanta Falcons in sacks in 1993 and earned his second NFL All-Pro Team selection.
“He brings a lot of experience from the highest level, especially from a technique standpoint going against the best offensive linemen in the world,” Wagner said. “Our kids are really going to feed off of that and learn a lot from him. To have such a great person involved with Angelo State, who was such a huge player here is a great opportunity for our program. He’ll be an integral part to our staff and the future of Ram football.
A highly successful rancher in nearby Christoval for the last decade, Holt was one of four finalists for the head coaching vacancy that was ultimately filled by Wagner at the end of December. The process has reignited Holt’s desire to coach football and help return the Rams to the playoffs – something he accomplished as a player in 1987.
“I would be lying if I didn’t say I wanted to win a national championship,” Holt said during his interview process in December. “But that starts with the small steps. We need to get stronger as a team. We need to get faster, more agile. You take those small steps and build them into the big ones.”
Holt and his wife, Deanna, live in the San Angelo area, and their daughter, Lauren, is a member of Angelo State’s women’s basketball team. Holt joins Theron Aych, Russell Gaskamp, Michael Slater and Mike Walton on Wagner’s staff. Angelo State’s graduate assistant coaches are R.J. Bacon, Nick Norris, Steven Papp and David Reisner.

Kay Yeager Coliseum has a brand spanking new basketball court. But nobody wants to use it. The Harlem Globetrotters played on it just last week. Then the new floor, which cost the city right at $100,000, was folded up and put away. It may not be used again until the Globetrotters come back next year.
"We have talked to Midwestern about possibly having a four-team tournament. I have also had some high schools express interest in a similar kind of tournament. And I have been trying to get an NBA exhibition game ever since I got here," MPEC Executive Director Bob Sullivan told me.
Sullivan is looking at all these alternatives after he was told that Wichita Falls had lost another bid to host the Lone Star Conference Basketball Tournament. The LSC is planning to announce that the tournament will move to Allen for the next three years after its four-year deal with Bartlesville, Okla., ends this year. The good thing about Allen is it's just 150 miles from Wichita Falls, Not only is that 140 miles closer than Bartlesville, you also save a booty full of money in tolls.
The bad thing about Allen is it's not Wichita Falls.
Allen, Wichita Falls and Amarillo were the towns that bid for the tournament. I have been told that Amarillo was a distant third in the competition.

The season has seen its share of it. From beginning the season with injured players on the bench and one player since making a recovery from knee surgery that kept him from playing last season to the suspension of a returning All-American to the loss of one of the Lone Star Conference's leading scorers and the leading rebounder, the Rams have been through their share of adversity.
But through it all, the Rams have persevered. They are 8-10 overall, but 4-2 in the LSC South Division with upset victories over defending LSC champion Midwestern State and No. 13 Incarnate Word just two nights ago.

Basketball opponents stifled any scoring - Nick Gholson, Times Record News
West Texas A&M 44, Tarleton State 36.
At first glance, it looks like a Lone Star Conference football score. In fact, the last two times these LSC schools met on a football field, the final scores were somewhat similar, 48-17 and 49-35. both games won by WT. But 44-36 was actually the final score of a basketball game — a men's basketball game — played Wednesday night in Canyon.
The 44 points matched the fewest points the Buffaloes have scored in Rick Cooper's 18 seasons as head coach at WT. His 1994-95 team was whipped 77-44 by Kansas State. The 36 points were the fewest the Texans have scored in the 23 years that Lonn Reisman has coached them. The previous low had been 40, also against WT back 17 years ago.
Cooper swears it was good defense by both teams that led to a final score that you would expect to see in a Saturday morning kids' game at the Y rather than one between two of the better Division II college teams in the country.
"This game was a good defensive effort by both teams. It was definitely a steel-toe boots kind of game," the WT coach said.
Reisman saw it a bit differently.
"We probably played the poorest offensive game that we have played this year. Execution was horrible," he said.
Since I wasn't at the game, I called a friend to get his take on things. Bad defense or bad offense?
"It was hellacious defense and poor shooting," said Phil Woodall, the radio voice for WT.

Improved Javelinas track and field teams still building - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
As the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons dawn at Texas A&M-Kingsville, fourth-year coach Ryan Dall is willing to sacrifice a few points at the Lone Star Conference meet in order to retool his teams for next season.
That doesn't mean there isn't reason for optimism this season, which begins Friday at the Houston Invitational indoor meet.
"Last year we obviously took a big step up. But our conference is so strong, we had four teams in the top 25 last year at some point during the outdoor season," Dall said. "In order to win the conference you've got to go up there with 30 scorers. Moore Takes Over Women's Tennis - TAMK Sports
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville Director of Athletics Kenneth Oliver introduced Josh Moore as the new head women’s tennis coach on Friday.
Moore is a former collegiate tennis player who comes to the Javelinas from the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch where he is a Tennis Professional. He is a certified United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Professional 1.
“Josh (Moore) is a good fit for Texas A&M-Kingsville,” said Oliver. “He brings the energy and enthusiasm needed to start a program and we are excited to have him join the staff.”
Moore has worked with a number of top tennis coaches in the United States throughout his playing days and time at the John Newcombe Tennis Academy. During that time he has also worked with some top players including Ryler Dehart, former NCAA #1 Singles player who made it to the second round of the 2008 U.S. Open, Kevin Anderson, owns a tournament semi-final victory of Novak Djokovic in 2008 and Jeroen Joling, a former top 20 junior player from the Netherlands.
Moore has been involved in numerous tennis camps including USA Junior Team Tennis and as the Tennis Instructor for the City of Brownwood, TX.
Moore graduated from Howard Payne University with a B.S in Exercise and Sport Management. He played at both Howard Payne and Cloud County Community College.
The Javelinas will begin competition during the 2011-12 school year. Moore replaces Meenakshi Sundaram who originally accepted the position, but later declined to accept a position elsewhere.

Basketball opponents stifled any scoring - Nick Gholson, Times Record News
West Texas A&M 44, Tarleton State 36.
At first glance, it looks like a Lone Star Conference football score. In fact, the last two times these LSC schools met on a football field, the final scores were somewhat similar, 48-17 and 49-35. both games won by WT. But 44-36 was actually the final score of a basketball game — a men's basketball game — played Wednesday night in Canyon.
The 44 points matched the fewest points the Buffaloes have scored in Rick Cooper's 18 seasons as head coach at WT. His 1994-95 team was whipped 77-44 by Kansas State. The 36 points were the fewest the Texans have scored in the 23 years that Lonn Reisman has coached them. The previous low had been 40, also against WT back 17 years ago.
Cooper swears it was good defense by both teams that led to a final score that you would expect to see in a Saturday morning kids' game at the Y rather than one between two of the better Division II college teams in the country.
"This game was a good defensive effort by both teams. It was definitely a steel-toe boots kind of game," the WT coach said.
Reisman saw it a bit differently.
"We probably played the poorest offensive game that we have played this year. Execution was horrible," he said.
Since I wasn't at the game, I called a friend to get his take on things. Bad defense or bad offense?
"It was hellacious defense and poor shooting," said Phil Woodall, the radio voice for WT.

Improved Javelinas track and field teams still building - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
As the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons dawn at Texas A&M-Kingsville, fourth-year coach Ryan Dall is willing to sacrifice a few points at the Lone Star Conference meet in order to retool his teams for next season.
That doesn't mean there isn't reason for optimism this season, which begins Friday at the Houston Invitational indoor meet.
"Last year we obviously took a big step up. But our conference is so strong, we had four teams in the top 25 last year at some point during the outdoor season," Dall said. "In order to win the conference you've got to go up there with 30 scorers. So I feel like if we kind of give some of our younger guys another year of experience, and then bring in a couple more guys on top of that, that can impact right away recruiting-wise, that gives us our best shot to make it happen next year.

Breaking News - LSC and GSC partner to create First and Ten Challenge

The Lone Star Conference and Gulf South Conference have joined forces to create the GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge, a regular-season series set to debut in 2012 that will match up football teams from two of the best leagues in all of NCAA Division II.
The event will include a total of 10 inter-conference games involving all five of the GSC’s football-playing members - Delta State, North Alabama, Valdosta State, West Alabama and West Georgia - and six of the LSC’s nine - Abilene Christian, Angelo State, Midwestern State, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M.
“I want to commend Commissioner Nate Salant and the athletics administrators at Gulf South Conference institutions for their spirit of cooperation in creating this challenge event,” LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “Those associated with Lone Star Conference football are excited to join the GSC in this effort, and we’re committed to ensuring this event becomes a showcase for the NCAA and particularly for the tremendous football being played in Division II.”
All five GSC teams will play one home game and one road game as part of the event, as will ACU, MSU, TSU and TAMUK from the LSC. LSC members ASU and WTAMU will play one game apiece.
The 10 contests include: Valdosta State at Angelo State (Sat, Sept. 15); Abilene Christian at Delta State (Thu, Sept. 27); Midwestern State at West Alabama (Thu, Oct. 4); Delta State at Tarleton State (Thu, Oct. 4); North Alabama at Texas A&M-Kingsville (Sat, Oct. 6); West Texas A&M at West Georgia (Thu, Oct. 25); Tarleton State at North Alabama (Thu, Nov. 1); Texas A&M-Kingsville at Valdosta State (Sat, Nov. 3); West Alabama at Abilene Christian (Sat, Nov. 3); and West Georgia at Midwestern State (Sat, Nov. 10).
Of the 10 games, five have been scheduled for Thursday night and four of those are tentatively set to be televised live.
"When I canvassed our fans and asked about the idea of seeing teams like Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M on their campuses, there was a lot of excitement and interest,” GSC commissioner Nate Salant said. “Our fans know the Lone Star schools and view them as high-quality opponents. Stan tells me that Lone Star folks see GSC schools the same way, so we think this will spike home attendance on both sides. It’s also the kind of cross-region, almost national, inter-conference play that football fans hunger for, so we believe we're addressing a real appetite.”
The event is being created for two general purposes: first, both conferences are partnering to address a mutual need for additional non-conference games due to the conference membership changes that have occurred in recent months; and second, football programs from both conference’s are highly competitive and desire to play the very best non-conference competition as a means of better preparing Division II postseason competition.
The First and Ten Challenge name was chosen to symbolize the beginning of a 'new set of downs' for both conferences after going through recent membership changes, with the LSC set to move forward with nine football-playing members next year while the GSC starts anew with five football-playing members in 2012.
The highlight of the 2012 schedule may be TAMUK’s games. The Javelinas’ contest against North Alabama is a rematch of the 1994 NCAA Division II National Championship game won by UNA, 16-10, while the TAMUK-Valdosta State game replays the 2002 national semifinal game in which the Blazers prevailed 21-12.
The remaining eight games will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
GSC member Delta State played for the Division II national title last month. GSC football teams have claimed 10 national championships, including seven of the past 19. LSC football teams have tallied 14 national titles, most recently in 1982.
“Both conferences have a tremendous amount of pride in their football programs. For the LSC, it’s been too long since we’ve crowned a national champion. The football is too good in this conference, and it’s time we asserted ourselves again on the national stage,” said Wagnon. “These games against the Gulf South certainly will keep our teams in the national conversation, and it’s my belief the stronger competition will serve our teams well as they advance into the postseason. We’ve had teams knocking on the door for 10-15 years now, and I hope 5-10 years from now people will look at this challenge event and recognize it as a turning point that helped LSC teams take that next step.”
Officials from both leagues think the event has great potential for sponsorship opportunities and television exposure. Gaining financial support through corporate partnerships will help to ensure to the success of this event, due to the high travel costs associated with making the long trips between GSC and LSC campuses.
“The 10 games we’ve lined up for this event are marquee match-ups. The lineup of games just doesn’t get any better in Division II, so certainly we think the event will provide a unique sponsorship opportunity,” Wagnon stated. “It will have far greater reach than a typical athletic event involving regional universities, as the exposure for this event will span the entire length of the football season with visibility in key markets in Texas and throughout the southeastern United States.”
The event has potential for television exposure as well, with the GSC being the nation’s first Division II conference to have its own broadcast network. Each year 10 GSC football games are broadcast via Charter Sports South, reaching millions of households in the southeast. Officials from both leagues are working to build upon the GSC’s efforts and expand coverage into Texas markets for the games in this event.
While only the match-ups for 2012 have been settled, both conferences have expressed interest in continuing this event in future years. Plans for 2013 and beyond will be determined as early as this spring.

"It's was like Frazier vs. Ali out there," said WT senior post Jacquiese Holcombe, who led all rebounders with nine. "It was very physically out there. Offensively, they knew everything we were doing and we knew everything they were doing. So this game came down to whomever was the most physically tough team."

Former Texas A&M-Commerce coaches hired at Middle Tennessee State - Adam Sparks, The Daily Journal
MTSU has hired two new football assistants, quarterbacks coach Buster Faulkner and linebackers coach Joe Cauthen, to complete its staff. Both were hired following the recent promotions of Willie Simmons to offensive coordinator and Steve Ellis to defensive coordinator.
Faulkner and Cauthen are both known as superb recruiters and served as coordinators in their previous job. They coached together on Valdosta State's 2007 Division II national title team.
Hardin-Simmons Completes Football Staff - KTXS
Michael Salinas has joined the staff as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. Salinas comes to HSU from Harlingen South High School, but he has also coached at Sam Houston State, West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville. He was the secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at both Sam Houston State and Kingsville and was defensive coordinator for his one season at West Texas A&M leading them to the playoffs for the first time in school history. He coached at Robstown and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff prior to going into collegiate coaching.

Women's track goes indoors - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
The Angelo State University women's track team's first official venture into the indoor version of its sport was a success.
ASU added women's indoor track and field to its list of sports over the summer and the team competed in its first meet over the weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational at Lubbock.
Four Rambelles came away with provisional qualifying marks for the Indoor National Championship Meet, which will be March 11-12 in Albuquerque, N.M.
"We haven't run indoors seriously here at Angelo State in many years," ASU track and field head coach James Reid said. "We have carried some kids to some meets as a reward over the past few years.
"For a lot of these kids, it was the first time they had done anything inside. I thought the group we took last weekend, we had a chance to get some marks out of them. I was pleased we were able to do that."

Basketball Regional Rankings out 1-26
Lady Buffs No. 6 in First Set of Regional Rankings - WTAM Sports Information
INDIANANPOLIS, Ind. – The first set of South Central Regional rankings were released on Wednesday and the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs came in at No. 6 in the initial poll, which was released by the NCAA this afternoon.
Northeastern State (14-1) topped the first poll among the South Central region teams, with Washburn (13-2) right behind at No. 2. Tarleton State (12-2) came in at No. 3 this week, with Northwest Missouri State (12-2) and Emporia State (10-4) rounding out the top five spots.
Closing out the top-eight spots behind the Lady Buffs (11-6) was Central Oklahoma (11-5) and Southeastern Oklahoma (10-5). The top eight teams in the final regional poll earn a trip to the South Central Regional postseason tournament.
The Lady Buffs will host Tarleton Wednesday evening at the First United Bank Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

MSU Men's Basketball: Midwestern opens South Central Region rankings at No. 8 - MSU Sports Information
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State stands eighth in the first South Central Regional rankings of the 2010-11 season as released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Basketball Committee.
The top eight teams from each of the eight regions advance to the postseason which will be played from March 12-15 at campus sites.
Tournament selections will take place via a Web cast selection show on NCAA.com on Sunday, March 6.
The winners of each regional gain a berth into the Elite Eight which is played at the MassMutual Center from March 23-26 in Springfield, Mass.
The South Central Region consists of the Lone Star Conference, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Heartland Conference.
Each of the conference's postseason tournament winners earns an automatic bid into the postseason, while five other gain at-large bids.
Midwestern State advanced to the South Central Regional as LSC champions in 1999, 2000, 2007. 2009 and 2010.
MIAA leading Missouri Southern (13-1) opens at No. 1 followed by Central Oklahoma (15-2), Incarnate Word (13-2), West Texas A&M (13-2), Fort Hays State (14-2) to close out the Nos. 1-5 positions.
Texas A&M-Commerce (10-5) stands in at No. 6 despite losses to Tarleton State and Midwestern State, but the Lions are padded by No. 7 Washburn (Kan.) (9-5) followed by the Mustangs (10-4) and Texans (10-3) at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively.
Cameron (7-6) fills out the ranking at No. 10.

MSU Men's Basketball: Midwestern opens South Central Region rankings at No. 8 - MSU Sports Information
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State stands eighth in the first South Central Regional rankings of the 2010-11 season as released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Basketball Committee.
The top eight teams from each of the eight regions advance to the postseason which will be played from March 12-15 at campus sites.
Tournament selections will take place via a Web cast selection show on NCAA.com on Sunday, March 6.
The winners of each regional gain a berth into the Elite Eight which is played at the MassMutual Center from March 23-26 in Springfield, Mass.
The South Central Region consists of the Lone Star Conference, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Heartland Conference.
Each of the conference's postseason tournament winners earns an automatic bid into the postseason, while five other gain at-large bids.
Midwestern State advanced to the South Central Regional as LSC champions in 1999, 2000, 2007. 2009 and 2010.
MIAA leading Missouri Southern (13-1) opens at No. 1 followed by Central Oklahoma (15-2), Incarnate Word (13-2), West Texas A&M (13-2), Fort Hays State (14-2) to close out the Nos. 1-5 positions.
Texas A&M-Commerce (10-5) stands in at No. 6 despite losses to Tarleton State and Midwestern State, but the Lions are padded by No. 7 Washburn (Kan.) (9-5) followed by the Mustangs (10-4) and Texans (10-3) at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively.
Cameron (7-6) fills out the ranking at No. 10.
Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road Wednesday night at Steinke Center. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

There's little doubt that West Texas A&M's Lone Star Conference South Division women's basketball game with No. 23 Tarleton State is important.
The Lady Buffs and TexAnns are tied in South Division play at 4-0 and will determine who stays atop the standings at 6 p.m. today at the First United Bank Center.
But win or lose, WT coach Krista Gerlich is telling the Lady Buffs (11-6 overall) that the season is long, and this game isn't a must-win.
"The thing that we can't do is place too much emphasis on it: that this is our season," Gerlich said. "Obviously, we want to put ourselves in the best position we can to win the South Division. It is a big game but we have a long way to go. Our season is still very long, so we just need to come out and do what we do, play the best that we can and focus on getting better."

RICHARDSON, Texas – Midwestern State and Angelo State were selected to win the 2011 Lone Star Conference Softball North and South Division titles, respectively, as the preseason polls were announced by league officials on Wednesday. MSU is favored to repeat in the LSC North Division, while ASU is the top choice to claim the LSC South crown.
The LSC has 15 teams including the debut of Incarnate Word, with seven teams in the North and eight in the South Division. The 2011 season starts February 1 with non-conference action. Along with a three-game series against each divisional opponent, the league will hold its annual crossover tournament April 1-3 in San Angelo, Texas. The top four teams in each division will advance to the LSC Championship, May 5-6-7 in Durant, Okla.
North Division
Midwestern State is the top choice to win the Lone Star Conference North Division title. The Mustangs received 14 of the 16 first-place votes cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives. MSU totaled 109 points on the heels of winning a LSC record 54 games including a 20-2 league mark to win the North Division for the fourth time in school history. The Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional after claiming the regional crown.
Central Oklahoma’s Kacie Edwards earned LSC North Division Preseason Player of the Year honors.
Edward’s, a sophomore catcher from Yukon, Okla., made an immediate impact in her first season to earn LSC North Division first-team and Freshman of the Year acclaim. She had a team-high .356 average and also led UCO in hits, doubles and runs batted in, while making just three errors in nearly 300 fielding chances behind the plate.
MSU’s Brittney Tanner was named LSC North Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Tanner, a senior from Burkburnett, Texas, posted a 22-3 mark with a 1.61 ERA and 214 strikeouts, both of which ranked second in the LSC, including six shutouts in 28 appearances last season. She was a second-team All-North Division selection as both a pitcher and designated player.
UCO collected one first-place vote to finish second with 87 points, while East Central was third with 72 points and the remaining first-place nod. Southeastern Oklahoma was fourth with 71 points, followed by Cameron fifth with 46, Southwestern Oklahoma sixth 32 and Northeastern State seventh with 31.

West Texas A&M Kimberly LeComte was tabbed LSC South Division Preseason Player of the Year.
LeComte, a junior outfielder from Boerne, Texas, paced the Lady Buffs to their best season in program history including their first LSC South title and regional appearance last season. She was named the school’s first NFCA All-American after leading the team in most offensive categories including a league-best .790 slugging percentage, 64 runs scored, 21 home runs and 166 total bases. LeComte also earned LSC South Division Player of the Year and NFCA South Central Region first team acclaim.
WTAMU’s Shelbey Cockrell claimed LSC South Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors.
Cockrell, a junior from Pearland, Texas, led the nation in saves with eight and boasted a 1.85 ERA and perfect 10-0 record. She was tough on opposing batters with a .200 average, allowing a conference-best 66 hits, 28 runs and 24 earned runs along with no triples. Cockrell threw the second no-hitter is WTAMU history last season and was named so the All-LSC South second team.
WTAMU, the defending South Division champions, was right behind ASU in the poll with 159 points and nine first-place votes, while Texas Woman’s was third with 128 points and the remaining first-place nod.

West Texas A&M will open it 2011 football season by hosting Colorado State-Pueblo at 6 p.m. Sept. 1 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
The Buffs' schedule, released Monday, features six home games plus the Lone Star Conference Football Festival on Sept. 17 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, where WT will meet Texas A&M-Kingsville. That game will be among eight against conference members.
WT's other nonconference game will be Oct. 29 when the Buffs host Super Region Four member Central Washington. The schedule:

Hagan's status is day-to-day - Times Record News
Chris Hagan's status is day-to-day after dislocating a toe on his right foot in Saturday's basketball game against Incarnate Word.
The good news for the Mustangs is that all of Hagan's X-rays came back negative.
Hagan leads MSU in scoring at 22.6 points per game. The senior guard also is averaging 4.7 assists and 1.94 steals a game for the 14-4 Mustangs. Hagan left Saturday's double-overtime loss six minutes into the second half. MSU travels to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday.

Tidwell Named Don Hansen National Special Teams POY - ASU Sports Information

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State return specialist Garrett Tidwell, who returned three kicks for scores and ranked in the top-10 nationally in both punt retuns and kickoff returns, was selected as the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year and punter George Shamblen was tabbed as a Hansen All-American as announced by the Don Hansen Football Committee Monday.
Tidwell, a senior from Boyd, Texas, was named to the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America First Team as a return specialist and was selected as the top special teamer after averaging 17.5 yards per punt return and 28.08 yard per kick return – both among the top 10 marks in the country. Tidwell returned two punts for scores and a kickoff for a touchdown during the 2010 season. He was previously selected as a first teamer and the top return specialist according to Daktronics. Tidwell closed his ASU career as the leader in single-game (182), single-season (740) and career (2,049) kick return yardage.
Shamblen, a junior from Miles, recorded the fifth-best punting average in the nation at 43.39 yards per kick during the 2010 season and helped Angelo State lead the nation in net punting with 39.66 yards per punt. The fourth ASU punter to be named an All-American with his Daktronics selection in December, Shamblen placed 18 punts inside the 20 and logged 10 kicks of 50 yards or more in his first season back to football after a three-year absence. Shamblen was also named an All-Lone Star Conference South Division First Team player and was named the top punter on the Daktronics All-Super Region Four First Team.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
The Don Hansen Football Committee selected All-Super Region teams in December and early January, with the first-team and second-team All-Super Region players advancing to the national ballot. A total of 167 players earned some form of Don Hansen All-America honors.

Buffs Picked Eighth in LSC Preseason Baseball Poll - WT Sports Information
The West Texas A&M Baseball team has been picked eighth in the 2011 Lone Star Conference Preseason poll announced Tuesday morning from the conference’s office in Richardson, Texas.
The Buffs finished the 2010 season with a 23-20 overall record with a 17-18 mark in the LSC, finishing just one spot out of the LSC Tournament. WT lost 22 games due to cancellations from the effects of weather including nine conference games.
Head coach Matt Vanderburg enters his third season at the helm of the Buffs, 2010 saw WT hit .353 as a team with 85 doubles, 22 triples, 39 homers and 327 RBI for a slugging percentage of .522 with 56 stolen bases on 66 attempts.
Abilene Christian tops the poll for the 13th consecutive season after winning their second straight LSC Championship in 2010. ACU was a near unanimous selection, receiving 29 of the 32 first-place votes on the ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives for 401 total points. The Wildcats, who finished 50-15 last season to record the first 50-win season in program history, fell to Central Missouri in the NCAA Division II South Central Region championship game.
The Wildcats Aaron Oliver was named the LSC Preseason Player of the Year.
Oliver, a senior outfielder from Los Angeles, Calif., recorded one of the most prolific seasons in ACU history earning South Central Region Player of the Year and first team all-America honors in 2010. LSC teams will play an 11-week, single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against every other team. Each series shall consist of a 9-inning game and a 7- and 9-inning doubleheader.
The Buffs open the 2011 season on the road on February 1 at University of the Southwest for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. The LSC schedule starts on February 4-5 as the Buffs travel to Northeastern State for a three game series.

West Texas A&M will open it 2011 football season by hosting Colorado State-Pueblo at 6 p.m. Sept. 1 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
The Buffs' schedule, released Monday, features six home games plus the Lone Star Conference Football Festival on Sept. 17 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, where WT will meet Texas A&M-Kingsville. That game will be among eight against conference members.
WT's other nonconference game will be Oct. 29 when the Buffs host Super Region Four member Central Washington. The schedule:

Hagan's status is day-to-day - Times Record News
Chris Hagan's status is day-to-day after dislocating a toe on his right foot in Saturday's basketball game against Incarnate Word.
The good news for the Mustangs is that all of Hagan's X-rays came back negative.
Hagan leads MSU in scoring at 22.6 points per game. The senior guard also is averaging 4.7 assists and 1.94 steals a game for the 14-4 Mustangs. Hagan left Saturday's double-overtime loss six minutes into the second half. MSU travels to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday.

Tidwell Named Don Hansen National Special Teams POY - ASU Sports Information

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State return specialist Garrett Tidwell, who returned three kicks for scores and ranked in the top-10 nationally in both punt retuns and kickoff returns, was selected as the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year and punter George Shamblen was tabbed as a Hansen All-American as announced by the Don Hansen Football Committee Monday.
Tidwell, a senior from Boyd, Texas, was named to the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America First Team as a return specialist and was selected as the top special teamer after averaging 17.5 yards per punt return and 28.08 yard per kick return – both among the top 10 marks in the country. Tidwell returned two punts for scores and a kickoff for a touchdown during the 2010 season. He was previously selected as a first teamer and the top return specialist according to Daktronics. Tidwell closed his ASU career as the leader in single-game (182), single-season (740) and career (2,049) kick return yardage.
Shamblen, a junior from Miles, recorded the fifth-best punting average in the nation at 43.39 yards per kick during the 2010 season and helped Angelo State lead the nation in net punting with 39.66 yards per punt. The fourth ASU punter to be named an All-American with his Daktronics selection in December, Shamblen placed 18 punts inside the 20 and logged 10 kicks of 50 yards or more in his first season back to football after a three-year absence. Shamblen was also named an All-Lone Star Conference South Division First Team player and was named the top punter on the Daktronics All-Super Region Four First Team.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
The Don Hansen Football Committee selected All-Super Region teams in December and early January, with the first-team and second-team All-Super Region players advancing to the national ballot. A total of 167 players earned some form of Don Hansen All-America honors.

Buffs Picked Eighth in LSC Preseason Baseball Poll - WT Sports Information
The West Texas A&M Baseball team has been picked eighth in the 2011 Lone Star Conference Preseason poll announced Tuesday morning from the conference’s office in Richardson, Texas.
The Buffs finished the 2010 season with a 23-20 overall record with a 17-18 mark in the LSC, finishing just one spot out of the LSC Tournament. WT lost 22 games due to cancellations from the effects of weather including nine conference games.
Head coach Matt Vanderburg enters his third season at the helm of the Buffs, 2010 saw WT hit .353 as a team with 85 doubles, 22 triples, 39 homers and 327 RBI for a slugging percentage of .522 with 56 stolen bases on 66 attempts.
Abilene Christian tops the poll for the 13th consecutive season after winning their second straight LSC Championship in 2010. ACU was a near unanimous selection, receiving 29 of the 32 first-place votes on the ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives for 401 total points. The Wildcats, who finished 50-15 last season to record the first 50-win season in program history, fell to Central Missouri in the NCAA Division II South Central Region championship game.
The Wildcats Aaron Oliver was named the LSC Preseason Player of the Year.
