Wagner 'excited' to be at Angelo State - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
“It is a great day to be a Ram.”
Those were the first words spoken by new Angelo State University head football coach Will Wagner Monday at a news conference to introduce him at the Junell Center.
The former Northeast Missouri State associate head coach was officially named the school’s new head coach, replacing Dale Carr, on Dec. 23 from a group of four finalists.
“I am excited to be here,” Wagner said before thanking numerous people including his former college coach — and former Central High School head coach — Jimmie Keeling and former NMSU head coach Mel Tjeerdsma. "I am excited about the opportunity to be at Angelo State. It is a great university. It has a great history and tradition in its football program. They know how to win. We have seen it before. I just hope I get the opportunity to get it headed back in the right direction.”

For the first time in 10 games, somebody not named Chris Hagan was the leading scorer for Midwestern State.
Michael Loyd led the Mustangs with 18 points on Monday night, one more than Hagan.
But that was the only MSU streak that came to an end.
With Thomas Colbert and Darrick Thomas adding some power inside, the Mustangs buried Newman University, 89-69 — the 11th straight win for MSU, the 36th straight win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum and the 500th victory inside the 42-year-old Dome.
Texans pull out win over Lions, 70-66 - TSU Sports Information
The lead changed hands 13 times in the second half between the Tarleton Texans and the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on Monday, and fortunately for the purple and white, Tarleton grabbed the final lead and held on for a 70-66 Lone Star Conference crossover victory.
The Texans trailed by two (60-58) with 5:56 on the clock before Wes Dipprey tied the game at 5:26 and Donta Smith had a putback at 4:09 to give Tarleton the final advantage.
“We are a work in progress, and we haven’t played enough games yet to learn everything about ourselves, but I was pleased with tonight’s effort,” said Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman. “This was a quality win against a quality basketball team. A&M-Commerce is a team that will contend for the Lone Star Conference championship. I like the way our kids played tonight, we shared the ball really well, and we played good defense at times.”

The Midwestern State women did a better job shooting free throws than the Newman Jets on Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, making more than the visitors even shot.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs went cold from the line when the game really mattered.
They missed two free throws in the final five seconds that could have tied the game or given them the lead, and a three-quarter-court shot at the buzzer was just short as they dropped a 73-71 decision to Newman in front of 1,483 fans.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Despite having only seven available players, the Angelo State University women’s basketball team put up a fight Monday, but fell 60-52 to St. Mary’s at the Junell Center.
Lindsey Mahone is the latest Rambelle to join the injured list, which already included Lauren Holt, Leah LeMaire, Laci Marsden Effenberger and Krysta Martinez. However, unlike the others, Mahone could make a return this season.
With a depleted lineup, the Rambelles battled and didn’t allow the Rattlers to pull away until the end of the game when ASU was forced to foul and SMU made its free throws.
TexAnns get fifth straight win, down Lions 77-64 - TSU Sports Information
Junior Jenna Harris had a career-high 16 points Monday as she helped the Tarleton TexAnns to a 77-64 Lone Star Conference crossover win at home against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Harris was six-of-seven from the floor in the victory as she helped the TexAnns to their fifth straight win to improve to 10-1 on the season.
“Jenna had a great night, and it is good to see a great kid like Jenna have a great game like that,” said Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne. “The thing about Jenna is she always works hard in practice and is dedicated to working on her game.”
CARDINALS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT - UIW Sports Information
For the third consecutive game, the University of the Incarnate Word women’s basketball team scored 71 points of more… and for the three times in as many games, the UIW women won.
Back at the McDermott Center on Monday night, Incarnate Word defeated visiting Texas A&M International University, 71-58, with four Cardinals scoring double figures and improving the squad’s overall record to 3-7.
