MSU falls in national semifinals - LSC Office
Midwestern State’s run at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship ended with a 2-0 loss to Alabama-Huntsville.
UAH jumped out to an early lead with a home run in the first inning, and added another run in the sixth frame to advance to the championship game Monday against UC-San Diego.
The Mustangs were unable to get the bats going against Chargers starter Whitney Toler, who improved to 21-2 by allowing three hits and notching four strikeouts in five innings. Alex Lewis pitched the final two innings to earn her 15th save of the season.
Kristina Gutierrez limited UAH to just two hits over the first three innings of the game before Brittney Tanner entered for the final three innings.
MSU's one-two punch of Tanner and Gutierrez combined for 27 shutouts including consecutive blankings of Indiana (Pa.) and Minnesota State Saturday to give the Mustangs another shot at UAH, who they dropped a close 3-2 contest in the tournament's opening round.
The Mustangs managed singles by Elena Bennett in the first inning, Amanda Potysman in the second inning and Courtney Bingham in the fourth.
MSU concluded an outstanding season at 54-14, which matches its Lone Star Conference single season wins record. The Mustangs senior quintet of Gutierrez, Tanner, Alyson Reynolds, Potysman and McKenzie Sickler led the team to an NCAA all-division high of 108 victories over the past two seasons.

ACU men win 19th national title - LSC Office
Abilene Christian captured its 19th NCAA Division II outdoor men's track and field championship Saturday night at Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium, taking the title by 13 points over runner-up Adams State (Colo.).
The Wildcats clinched the championship with Desmond Jackson's win in the 200 meters and Amos Sang's fourth-place finish in the 5000 meters, giving them 68 points to 55 for the Grizzlies. The win matches the Wildcats' indoor national championship won in March and marks the 10th time in school history the Wildcats have won both the indoor and outdoor national championships in the same season.

Junior thrower Nick Jones won the discus with a meet-record throw of 199 feet, 3 inches, breaking a 28-year-old meet record. The 4x100 relay team finished second and Jackson was third in the 100 meters as the Wildcats racked up 37 points on the final day of competition.
Angelo State finished tied for 9th, with Texas A&M-Kingsville 21st and West Texas A&M 30th in the men's team race, while ACU and Kingsville tied for 29th place on the women's side.

SWO begins search for new baseball coach

SWOSU BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW BASEBALL COACH
WEATHERFORD - Southwestern Oklahoma State University baseball coach Scott Selby has made tough decisions before, but his most recent one didn't involve pitching rotations or batting orders.
Saying that his budding family needed more of his full-time attention, Selby resigned his post as head baseball coach at SWOSU to accept a similar position near his Yukon home. Selby was approved Thursday night as the new head baseball coach at Mustang High School.
Selby, 46, said the demands of coaching college baseball over the last 14 years had taken a large chunk of time away from his family which now includes a teenage daughter and son at the home. His oldest son, Spencer, is nearing graduation at the University of Oklahoma.
"I need to catch up on being a Dad," Selby said. "This opportunity at Mustang will allow me to continue to do what I love (coaching baseball) and still be near my family and participate more in their daily lives."
Selby leaves SWOSU after four seasons in which he led the Bulldogs to a 97-107 (.475) record, including a pair of 30-win seasons. This season, Selby's last at SWOSU, the Bulldogs had a 33-18 record and earned qualification for the Lone Star Conference tournament.
"I have nothing but respect for SWOSU and the treatment I received from President (Randy) Beutler and (Athletic Director) Todd Thurman," Selby said. "The future and direction for Bulldog baseball is very bright. SWOSU is a Top 25 program and will continue to attract many of the top players around."
Todd Thurman, SWOSU's athletic director, praised Selby whom he has known for a number of years dating back to their days on Southern Nazarene University athletic staff.
"We are greatly appreciative of Scott and his hard work, commitment and service to SWOSU. In four short years, he has elevated the level of our baseball program and brought it to par with the top schools in the region," Thurman said. "We wish him and his family the very best in the future"
Selby arrived at SWOSU in 2008 after spending nine seasons at SNU where he was the school's all-time winningest coach with a 275-224 record. He has a combined record of 372-321 (.536) which spans 14 seasons.
This Bulldog squad accomplished several firsts on the way to their best season since 1996 when veteran coach Larry Geurkink won 34 games in SWOSU's last NAIA year. This year the Bulldogs qualified for the LSC Tournament and won their first-ever LSC tournament game, beating Texas A&M-Kingsville on the second day of play.
The Bulldogs spent two weeks ranked among the nation's top 25 NCAA Division II teams for the first time ever, peaking at No. 24 in the first week of April.
SWOSU also defeated the nation's No. 1 ranked team for the first time, toppling Emporia State on March 22. The Hornets were unbeaten through their first 15 games before SWOSU rolled to an 18-9 victory in Emporia, Kan.
Thurman has appointed current assistant Zack Saunders as the interim coach while the search for Selby's permanent replacement begins.
"We anticipate this job to draw a considerable amount of interest around the SWOSU community and among baseball coaches in the region," Thurman said. "SWOSU has a loyal and solid support system in place. We want to find the right person who will bring in student-athletes who will succeed in the classroom, community and on the diamond."

Time after time, freshman starter Whitney Toler kept the Mustangs from getting the clutch hit and then turned it over to bullpen ace Alex Lewis, who saved a 3-2 win for top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.
The Chargers (46-5) stay in the winner's bracket and will play No. 2 North Georgia (53-10) at 10:30 a.m. (CDT) today. North Georgia advanced Thursday with a 9-4 win over No. 11 Indiana, Pa.
The No. 5 Mustangs (52-13) will play Indiana, Pa. in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m.(CDT) Saturday.
"I thought we were very loose coming in our first time around getting here, but I think we played a little tentative at first. Then we got fired up and played hard," MSU coach Brady Tigert said. "I am very proud of my kids. I know we are behind the eight ball right now, but I still think we can win it."

It was one of those good news-bad news evenings for Brittney Tanner.
The best news was the Midwestern State senior pitcher was named to two All-American teams on Thursday — first team on one and second team on another.
Tanner, at times, looked like a true All-American. Pitching against a team ranked No. 1 in the country, she had 11 strikeouts, including a three-K hat trick for Alabama-Huntsville leadoff hitter Kelli Long. She only gave up three hits, all singles.
The ace from Burkburnett also had an RBI double of her own and scored a run.
Now for the bad news.
Tanner hit two batters and made one fielding error that led to three Huntsville runs.
With no clutch hitting to back up the ace pitcher, the No. 5 Mustangs fell 3-2 to the top-ranked Chargers in this first-round game in the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
"I feel like I shot myself in the foot," Tanner said.

Abilene Christian University picked up 15 points Thursday in its attempt to win another NCAA Division II men's track and field championship, helped by Amos Sang's successful defense of his 10,000 meter title.
Competing in the last event of the day, the Wildcats' senior distance ace won at Warrior Stadium on the campus of California State-Stanislaus with a time of 29:10.
That gave ACU 15 points, one behind first-place Ashland University of Ohio.
ASU TRACK: ASU's Rogers 9th in long jump - San Angelo Standard Times
It wasn't quite the homecoming that Angelo State University's Trevor Rogers had envisioned.
Rogers, a native of nearby El Sobrante, Calif., squeaked into the finals and finished ninth in the long jump competition as the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships opened Thursday night.
Rogers, who entered the competition with the fourth-best long jump in the country, hit his longest mark on his second attempt of the evening — a leap of 23 feet, 9 inches that was just enough to earn three more attempts. Rogers had legal marks on the first two jumps of the final round, neither better than his previous jump, before scratching on his last.
"I can't even explain it," Rogers said after the event. "I didn't feel good on any of my jumps, honestly. I don't know what to say."

MIDLAND Wade Goode has been evolving ever since he first set foot on the Angelo State University campus in San Angelo.
A two-sport athlete who originally was recruited to play football and throw the shot put, the senior from Midland High has mastered the discus.
And it’s the All-American honors earned in the discus last season Goode will be trying to protect when the NCAA Division II Championships begin this weekend at Cal State Stanislaus’ Al Brenda Track in Turlock, Calif.
“After last year, I knew I’d have a good chance to bring back All-American honors again,” Goode said. “I won’t get too excited. It’s just another day of throwing.”

When Wade Goode came to Angelo State University four years ago, it was to compete in the shot put and play football.
But on Saturday, in the final athletic competition of his collegiate career, the applied physics major has the chance to close it out as a national champion, and not in either of the things that brought him to ASU.
Goode heads into the 2011 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships with the seventh-longest throw in the discus, an event in which he earned All-America status last year.
"With all of our kids, we make them do everything," ASU head track and field coach James Reid said. "He had such good levers that I knew he had the opportunity to be a good discus thrower."
Goode did not even pick up the discus until arriving at ASU. In high school, he was a district champion shot putter at Midland High as well as an integral part of the Bulldogs football team.
At the Rams' home meet his freshman season, Goode threw the discus for the first time and began focusing more energy on the event.
"He wasn't too keen on it," Reid said. "But he ended up throwing it pretty decent."

Nick Jones finds himself in an unusual situation this time around at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For once, the Abilene Christian University junior and two-time national champion in the discus goes into the event as the favorite.
It hasn't been that way in his previous two outdoor championships. His freshman year in 2008, the Amarilllo Tascosa graduate went into the meet in Walnut, Calif., with the fourth-best throw. He ended up winning the meet with a throw of 186 feet, 11 feet — a personal best at the time.
Yet the following year in 2009, Jones wasn't the favorite to defend his title. Grand Valley State's Aleksas Abromavicius went into the meet in San Angelo as the overwhelming favorite, while Jones was ranked fourth again.
Jones, though, ripped off a throw of 178-7 for the early lead, before Abromavicius — who had been throwing nearly 200 feet during the season — overtook him with a throw of 178-10 on his final attempt. Jones, however, beat the Lithuanian with a toss of 182-1 on his final throw.
This time around, Jones, who sat out last season with a redshirt, has the nation's best throw in Division II at 198-7, while Fort Hays State's Max Alonso is No. 2 at 190-3, followed by a pair of Nebraska-Kearney athletes — Dane Tobey (187-1) and Drew Onnen (186-5). ACU junior Tyler Fleet is No. 12 (173-10), after finishing fifth last year.
Jones admits it's a little nerve-racking being the No. 1 guy going into the meet.
"I'm kind of looking over my shoulder, looking at that No. 4 seed or that freshman or something," he said. "Or maybe Tyler. Tyler, man, he's got a huge throw in him. I'm waiting for him to blow that up. Yeah, this is the first year I've been the No. 1 seed. It's definitely been fun, but I'm on my toes, too. I'm ready for whatever they got."

The Abilene Christian University foursome, their team's only qualifiers in six events at the NCAA Division II indoor championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on March 12, won the men's team title with 49 points — seven more than second-place Ashland (Ohio) and its 22 qualifiers.
Now, the Fab Four are bringing reinforcements for the outdoor championships, which begin today at Cal State-Stanislaus' Warrior Stadium in Turlock, Calif.
The Wildcats will have nine athletes competing in 11 events, plus one relay, as the men seek their first outdoor title since 2008 and 19th overall.
"I know the rest of our guys were eager to join us," Jones said. "Those guys who missed out indoors are ready to come on outdoors and really show what the rest of our team is capable of doing."
ASU TRACK: McDonald, Orlando look to have twice as much fun - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
Angelo State University junior Jacob McDonald and senior Tyler Orlando spend a lot of time together. The two spend hours each week working on their signature field events, the javelin throw and the pole vault, whether in practice or at competitions.
They will spend more time together this weekend at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Turlock, Calif. They hope to be together on the medals stand there.
Both have been to the national meet before, and both have earned All-America status by finishing in the Top 8. Orlando was third in the javelin at nationals last year and seventh in 2009. McDonald was seventh in the javelin last year.
The two are looking to become double All-Americans this weekend and multiple All-Americans in their careers. This will be Orlando's last national meet, while McDonald will have one left next year.

Four West Texas A&M track and field athletes will participate in the three-day NCAA Division II outdoor national championships, scheduled to begin today at Turlock, Calif.
WT will be represented by Gage Mayer (high jump), Servell Dandridge (discus) and Jonathan Lindsey (discus) in the men's division, and Jadiah Riley (shot put) in the women's division.
Cal State-Stanislaus is the meet host.

"I think it's an awesome draw," the Midwestern State softball coach said of the Mustangs' opening-round matchup against top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville today at the NCAA Division II Finals.
"Lets' go ahead. Let's do it. Let's get after it and see what happens," was the way Tigert looks at this 6:30 p.m. matchup at the Moyer Complex. "We've got to beat them sometime. And they lost in the home opener of their super regional, so anybody can be beat."
Alabama-Huntsville (45-5-1) and No. 5 MSU (52-11) are two of only three top 10 teams to make it to D-II softball's version of the elite eight.
Strangely, all three are in the same bracket. In the top half of Bracket 2, second-ranked North Georgia (52-10) opens against No. 11 Indiana, Pa. (38-6) today at 4 p.m.
The two Bracket 2 winners will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The two losers will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
"Obviously, Huntsville is the team to beat, and I think our side of the bracket is the tougher one. But it goes back to how we play, how we relax and not be nervous about being on that big stage," Tigert said.

Elder already had one of these third-place reminders that his team had fallen a bit short of its goal.
Grant McCasland took the MSU basketball team to back-to-back Elite Eights, but he also wasn't satisfied.
McCasland went 0-2 in his two visits to Springfield, Mass. Both times he left town feeling he had a team that could have won a national title.
Brady Tigert now follows in the footsteps of Elder and McCasland. He has brought his MSU softball team to its first NCAA Division II World Series.
But Tigert is taking a different approach.
He wants his team to have fun here — win or lose. He wants the next few days to be a reward for all these girls have achieved.
"This is the icing on the cake," Tigert said. "Obviously, our goal is to win a national championship, but everybody knows that itisthe hardest thing in the world just to get here."

MIDLAND Wade Goode has been evolving ever since he first set foot on the Angelo State University campus in San Angelo.
A two-sport athlete who originally was recruited to play football and throw the shot put, the senior from Midland High has mastered the discus.
And it’s the All-American honors earned in the discus last season Goode will be trying to protect when the NCAA Division II Championships begin this weekend at Cal State Stanislaus’ Al Brenda Track in Turlock, Calif.
“After last year, I knew I’d have a good chance to bring back All-American honors again,” Goode said. “I won’t get too excited. It’s just another day of throwing.”

When Wade Goode came to Angelo State University four years ago, it was to compete in the shot put and play football.
But on Saturday, in the final athletic competition of his collegiate career, the applied physics major has the chance to close it out as a national champion, and not in either of the things that brought him to ASU.
Goode heads into the 2011 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships with the seventh-longest throw in the discus, an event in which he earned All-America status last year.
"With all of our kids, we make them do everything," ASU head track and field coach James Reid said. "He had such good levers that I knew he had the opportunity to be a good discus thrower."
Goode did not even pick up the discus until arriving at ASU. In high school, he was a district champion shot putter at Midland High as well as an integral part of the Bulldogs football team.
At the Rams' home meet his freshman season, Goode threw the discus for the first time and began focusing more energy on the event.
"He wasn't too keen on it," Reid said. "But he ended up throwing it pretty decent."

Nick Jones finds himself in an unusual situation this time around at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For once, the Abilene Christian University junior and two-time national champion in the discus goes into the event as the favorite.
It hasn't been that way in his previous two outdoor championships. His freshman year in 2008, the Amarilllo Tascosa graduate went into the meet in Walnut, Calif., with the fourth-best throw. He ended up winning the meet with a throw of 186 feet, 11 feet — a personal best at the time.
Yet the following year in 2009, Jones wasn't the favorite to defend his title. Grand Valley State's Aleksas Abromavicius went into the meet in San Angelo as the overwhelming favorite, while Jones was ranked fourth again.
Jones, though, ripped off a throw of 178-7 for the early lead, before Abromavicius — who had been throwing nearly 200 feet during the season — overtook him with a throw of 178-10 on his final attempt. Jones, however, beat the Lithuanian with a toss of 182-1 on his final throw.
This time around, Jones, who sat out last season with a redshirt, has the nation's best throw in Division II at 198-7, while Fort Hays State's Max Alonso is No. 2 at 190-3, followed by a pair of Nebraska-Kearney athletes — Dane Tobey (187-1) and Drew Onnen (186-5). ACU junior Tyler Fleet is No. 12 (173-10), after finishing fifth last year.
Jones admits it's a little nerve-racking being the No. 1 guy going into the meet.
"I'm kind of looking over my shoulder, looking at that No. 4 seed or that freshman or something," he said. "Or maybe Tyler. Tyler, man, he's got a huge throw in him. I'm waiting for him to blow that up. Yeah, this is the first year I've been the No. 1 seed. It's definitely been fun, but I'm on my toes, too. I'm ready for whatever they got."

Nick Jones, Desmond Jackson, Ramon Sparks and Amos Sang pulled off an astonishing feat earlier this year. The Abilene Christian University foursome, their team's only qualifiers in six events at the NCAA Division II indoor championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on March 12, won the men's team title with 49 points — seven more than second-place Ashland (Ohio) and its 22 qualifiers.
Now, the Fab Four are bringing reinforcements for the outdoor championships, which begin today at Cal State-Stanislaus' Warrior Stadium in Turlock, Calif.
The Wildcats will have nine athletes competing in 11 events, plus one relay, as the men seek their first outdoor title since 2008 and 19th overall.
"I know the rest of our guys were eager to join us," Jones said. "Those guys who missed out indoors are ready to come on outdoors and really show what the rest of our team is capable of doing."

Angelo State University junior Jacob McDonald and senior Tyler Orlando spend a lot of time together. The two spend hours each week working on their signature field events, the javelin throw and the pole vault, whether in practice or at competitions.
They will spend more time together this weekend at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Turlock, Calif. They hope to be together on the medals stand there.
Both have been to the national meet before, and both have earned All-America status by finishing in the Top 8. Orlando was third in the javelin at nationals last year and seventh in 2009. McDonald was seventh in the javelin last year.
The two are looking to become double All-Americans this weekend and multiple All-Americans in their careers. This will be Orlando's last national meet, while McDonald will have one left next year.

On Tuesday national qualifiers from the Javelinas Track & Field team will head to the NCAA National Championships hosted by Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, CA. The three day meet will begin on the May 26th and run through May 28th.
High Jumper Sam Alvarez serves as the sole female competitor from the Javelinas, while Tim Price, Sergio Rios (400-meter hurdles), Tommy Singletary (4x100-meter relay), Anthony Washington (4x100-meter relay), and Jonathan Woodson (200 and 4x100-meter relay) will represent the men. This is the second trip to the national meet for Rios, Singletary and Woodson.
Alvarez, who will be making her first trip, is looking forward to getting the opportunity to compete against the best the nation has to offer.
"Thoughts of being an All-American do linger every once in a while, and the dream is there it is just my job to go and catch it," she said.

Twelve months later, she will find herself competing in nationals for the second time during her freshman year at Angelo State University.
The high jumper already qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Albuquerque earlier this year, and now has qualified for this week's Outdoor Championships as well.
Despite competing in her first season as a collegian, Holly's early success doesn't surprise ASU head coach James Reid.
"The reason we recruited her because she was a winner," Reid said. "With the marks she was hitting in high school, it was a very safe assumption that she would be at the national championship, based on what it typically takes to get into the meet."

Smith qualified as an individual last year as well, but a hip flexor injury forced him to concentrate solely on the sprint relay, which he helped take sixth place to earn All-American honors.
This year, Smith has no such injuries heading into the national meet May 26 to 28 on the campus of California State University-Stanislaus.
"I'm real excited," said Smith, who attended high school in Rowlett, a suburb of Dallas. "I'm blessed also. I mean, it's been a long journey. I'm just happy to be here again and have the opportunity to run fast."

Midwestern State's Sam Smith qualified for this weekend's HP Byron Nelson Championship by firing a 68 (-4) in open qualifying Monday afternoon at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
"This is such a great feat for Sam," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "He played exceptional golf for us this spring. He is working hard and really dedicating himself to the game. He has a great swing."
Smith birdied five out of seven holes during a stretch on the Front Nine and closed the round with eight birdies then outlasted two others in four playoff holes to secure a spot in the 72-hole at TPC Four Seasons Golf Course in Las Colinas.
The Archer City native closed strong with birdies on 13, 15 and 18 to force the playoff. He took advantage of his strong swing to score at a 3-under rate on the course's four Par-5 holes.
Smith joins pros Martin Flores, Robert Gamez and Todd Fischer among those qualifying for the prestigious PGA event as the top four players qualified out of the field of 80.
Follow Smith at the HP Byron Nelson Championship as it airs on The Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday before moving to CBS on Saturday and Sunday. The competition broadcasts from 2-5 p.m. each day.

MSU tops WT twice to earn first NCAA Championship berth - LSC Office
Midwestern State picked up two wins over West Texas A&M to clinch the program's first NCAA Championship berth Saturday at the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals at Mustangs Park.
After dropping the opening game of the best-of-three series Friday, the Mustangs prevailed in game two 8-2 to force the decisive game. MSU led the final game 3-2 before the offense erupted for eight runs in the seventh frame en route to an 11-2 victory.
In the seventh inning, nine consecutive Mustang hitters reached including solo homers from Courtney Bingham and Kim Jerrick and a grand slam by Mallory Mooney.
MSU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, using three walks along with a RBI single by Amanda Potysman and a two-run Bingham double down the right-field line.
But WT answered in the fifth frame after a Mustangs' miscue to plate two runs on a Meghan Brown run-scoring single to right field and a wild pitch.
MSU (52-12) opens the 2011 NCAA Division II Championship against top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Thursday night at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m (Central Time).

Gutierriez paved the way for Saturday sweep - Nick Gholson, Times Record News
Kristina Gutierrez came out and pitched like it could be her last game.
That's because it could have been.
Yes, the Midwestern State softball team put on an offensive show in a doubleheader sweep of West Texas A&M on Saturday.
You sure can't overlook 19 runs, 26 hits and five home runs.
But MSU wouldn't be headed to Virginia this week without the silent pitching heroics of a girl they simply call "G."
Gutierrez isn't MSU's ace. But with the season on the line, this 22-year-old senior certainly was an ace in the hole for the Mustangs.
In Game 1 of the NCAA South Central Super Region on Friday, the WT sluggers banged three out of the park against ace Brittney Tanner in a 4-1 win that put Midwestern in a do-or-die hole.
Lose Game 2 on Saturday and it's bye, bye season.
It was the biggest game of Gutierrez's life. The big yellow softball and MSU's softball season were in the palm of her right hand.....

ERRORS DOOM CARDINALS - UIW Baseball
In all sports, mistakes can be costly – but in baseball, errors can lead to more mistakes as teams press to be perfect.
For the Cardinals on Sunday, the 2011 South Central Regional Championship was a classic case of a team putting themselves in an uphill battle that they couldn’t come back from as early mistakes put UIW in a hole that they couldn’t come back from against University of Central Missouri.
The Mules, the No. 2 seed in the regional tournament held at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium at St. Mary’s University, won the game, 7-0, and ended the Cardinals’ season.
After Ethan Lutz started the game by striking out the side for Incarnate Word (37-18), Central Missouri scored a run in the top of the second inning after the leadoff batter got on base thanks to a dropped fly ball in the outfield. The runner would later score by stealing home and making it 1-0 in favor of the Mules.
Later errors only piled on the runs for UCM (49-8) and of the seven runs to come home for Central Missouri, not a single one was earned. The Mules’ starting pitcher, Matt Curtis, pitched all nine innings and earned a four-hit shutout victory.
“This was the worst game we played all year,” head coach Danny Heep said, flatly, after everything was said and done. “We couldn’t catch the ball, field the ball, run bunt plays, hit the ball… and we made mental mistakes. We just couldn’t pull it together.”
Storm Postseason Run Comes to an End - SOSU Baseball
Stranded base runners and missed opportunities brought No. 26 Southeastern’s magical postseason run to a premature end, falling to No. 30 Incarnate Word, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at VJ Keefe Memorial Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
The Savage Storm finish the year at 35-19 with a Lone Star Conference Championship and the school’s fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Texans dropped by Cardinals 8-4 in South Central region elimination game - TSU Baseball
The Tarleton baseball team battled Incarnate Word in the second round of the NCAA Division II South Central region tournament Friday afternoon and were eliminated by the Cardinals by a score of 8-4.
The Cardinals were the first team to threaten with runners on first and second in the bottom of the first with just one out, but a nice 4-6-3 double play got the Texans out of the inning unscathed.
UIW broke open the game in the second with a pair of RBI singles that gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Tarleton managed a couple of base runners in the third with singles by Tim Rainey and Andrew Kapple, but were left stranded.
Head coach Bryan Conger talked about the game at the press conference.
"We knew we had to go out and compete and if you do that, you can accomplish everything," said Conger. "We came up just short of our goals, but it was still a great season. This was a special group of guys and they bought into what we were trying to do. We were fortunate to have these guys."
Senior Tim Rainey also discussed the team's peformance.
"We came here ready to go and ready to compete," said Rainey. "We put our best team on the field. Just didn't reach our goal. It was a great experience though and it has been great playing with these guys."
Senior Junnior Dishmey was complementary of his teammates as well.
"Having the week off threw us off, but that's no excuse," said Dishmey. "They just controlled the game better. But coming to Tarleton from the Dominican Republic, I really was confident in my teammates and the coaches and the plans they had. They are like my family. We all had a common goal and fell short, but that's baseball."
Tarleton ends the season with a 35-15 record, which still makes the best winning percentage in program history.

ACU's Newby hopes to defend title at national track meet - Joey Richards, Abilene Reporter News
Paige Newby has mixed feelings about her final collegiate track and field meet. The Abilene Christian University senior is excited about returning to the national meet, but at the same time, well, it's the last time she'll throw the discus.
"It's bittersweet," she said. "I'm excited, because I have one more meet to go. It's nationals, and I made it to nationals. But it's sad, because it is my last collegiate meet. I'm going to miss my entire team — women and men."
ACU coach Roosevelt Lofton said Newby — one of three seniors on the women's team — will be missed, too.
"She's a strong leader, and she'll be missed next year," he said.

Championship meets are nothing new for Angelo State University pole vaulter Kelsey Wilson.
The junior from Rocksprings won the Class 1A title as a senior before moving on to college. She won the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association indoor and outdoor championships while at South Plains Junior College.
She competed in her first Division II indoor national meet in March, but failed to clear the opening height. Later this week, she will compete for the first time at the Division II outdoor meet in Turlok, Calif. She will be looking to make up for her disappointing showing at the indoor championships.
That trip to Turlok began, however, in a tiny Central Texas town 120 miles south of San Angelo where Wilson began gymnastics, which would eventually lead to pole vaulting.
"Before I was a pole vaulter, I was a gymnast," Wilson said. "That is kind of what started it. I had a guy come up to me and tell me that I had nice shoulders and strength and that he wanted me to pole vault for him. That kind of sparked it for me."
Brian Holik has big hurdle to clear - Quinton Martinez, San Angelo Standard Times
Brian Holik has been at the pinnacle of his sport for quite some time now.
The Angelo State hurdler — and Wall High School product — has been to nationals every year he has been in college.
As a member of both 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, he has earned All-American status every year.
Before that, he had been to the UIL State Track meet in the 300 hurdles all four years in high school, was a medalist three times and won the event as a junior.
"I've been really blessed to say the least," Holik said. "To make it to nationals as a freshman — not many people get the opportunity to go get that experience. Somehow things have always worked out for me to make it. I haven't always had the best times, but things always seem to work out."
ASU junior heads home for competition - Paul Harris, San Angelo Standard Times
Trevor Rogers is going home.
The Angelo State University junior, who transferred last year from City College of San Francisco, earned a ticket back to his home state by qualifying for the Division II national track and field meet in the long jump and triple jump.
This year's meet will be held Thursday through Saturday on the campus of California State University-Stanislaus, not far from where Rogers grew up.
"I'm loving it," Rogers said. "I've jumped at Cal State-Stanislaus before, and I like it. Home crowd, my mom's going to be there, I'll get a little home cooking, so I plan to perform out there."

Texans sign Division I guard Shedrick Haynes - TSU Basketball
The Tarleton Texan men’s basketball program has announced its first signing of the offseason with the addition of NCAA Division I recruit Shedrick Haynes.
Haynes, a 6-0, 180-pound guard from Brandenton, Fla., will transfer from Big East Conference school South Florida to play his final season with the Texans in 2011-12.
“Shedrick brings an immediate impact guard to our program,” said Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman. “He is a multi-threat player. He is a great shooter, but he also has athletic ability to beat a defender and create his own shot or set up others. The thing that stood out most during the recruiting process was how great a young man Shedrick is and how he will become an excellent ambassador for our Tarleton basketball program. It was important to our staff to not only find a player with Shedrick’s ability, but also a guy that will lead vocally and by example. Shedrick has a desire to succeed, and during our meetings it was evident that he will bring a unique energy with him, and he can handle the lofty expectations we have here at Tarleton.”
Midwestern State picked up two wins over West Texas A&M to clinch the program's first NCAA Championship berth Saturday at the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals at Mustangs Park.
After dropping the opening game of the best-of-three series Friday, the Mustangs prevailed in game two 8-2 to force the decisive game. MSU led the final game 3-2 before the offense erupted for eight runs in the seventh frame en route to an 11-2 victory.
In the seventh inning, nine consecutive Mustang hitters reached including solo homers from Courtney Bingham and Kim Jerrick and a grand slam by Mallory Mooney.
MSU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, using three walks along with a RBI single by Amanda Potysman and a two-run Bingham double down the right-field line.
But WT answered in the fifth frame after a Mustangs' miscue to plate two runs on a Meghan Brown run-scoring single to right field and a wild pitch.
MSU (52-12) opens the 2011 NCAA Division II Championship against top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Thursday night at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m (Central Time).

Gutierriez paved the way for Saturday sweep - Nick Gholson, Times Record News
Kristina Gutierrez came out and pitched like it could be her last game.
That's because it could have been.
Yes, the Midwestern State softball team put on an offensive show in a doubleheader sweep of West Texas A&M on Saturday.
You sure can't overlook 19 runs, 26 hits and five home runs.
But MSU wouldn't be headed to Virginia this week without the silent pitching heroics of a girl they simply call "G."
Gutierrez isn't MSU's ace. But with the season on the line, this 22-year-old senior certainly was an ace in the hole for the Mustangs.
In Game 1 of the NCAA South Central Super Region on Friday, the WT sluggers banged three out of the park against ace Brittney Tanner in a 4-1 win that put Midwestern in a do-or-die hole.
Lose Game 2 on Saturday and it's bye, bye season.
It was the biggest game of Gutierrez's life. The big yellow softball and MSU's softball season were in the palm of her right hand.....

ERRORS DOOM CARDINALS - UIW Baseball
In all sports, mistakes can be costly – but in baseball, errors can lead to more mistakes as teams press to be perfect.
For the Cardinals on Sunday, the 2011 South Central Regional Championship was a classic case of a team putting themselves in an uphill battle that they couldn’t come back from as early mistakes put UIW in a hole that they couldn’t come back from against University of Central Missouri.
The Mules, the No. 2 seed in the regional tournament held at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium at St. Mary’s University, won the game, 7-0, and ended the Cardinals’ season.
After Ethan Lutz started the game by striking out the side for Incarnate Word (37-18), Central Missouri scored a run in the top of the second inning after the leadoff batter got on base thanks to a dropped fly ball in the outfield. The runner would later score by stealing home and making it 1-0 in favor of the Mules.
Later errors only piled on the runs for UCM (49-8) and of the seven runs to come home for Central Missouri, not a single one was earned. The Mules’ starting pitcher, Matt Curtis, pitched all nine innings and earned a four-hit shutout victory.
“This was the worst game we played all year,” head coach Danny Heep said, flatly, after everything was said and done. “We couldn’t catch the ball, field the ball, run bunt plays, hit the ball… and we made mental mistakes. We just couldn’t pull it together.”
Storm Postseason Run Comes to an End - SOSU Baseball

The Tarleton baseball team battled Incarnate Word in the second round of the NCAA Division II South Central region tournament Friday afternoon and were eliminated by the Cardinals by a score of 8-4.
The Cardinals were the first team to threaten with runners on first and second in the bottom of the first with just one out, but a nice 4-6-3 double play got the Texans out of the inning unscathed.

Thursday night was the place to be if you’re a fan of collegiate baseball as the University of the Incarnate Word faced off against St. Mary’s University at V.J. Keefe Stadium in the final game of the first day of the 2011 South Central Regional Championships for NCAA Division II.
The Rattlers were the No. 1 seed in the regional tournament and the Cardinals were the No. 6 seed and after shaky starts from both pitchers… nine inning just wasn’t enough as STMU came back to win, 6-5, in a contest that went 12 innings.
“Should we have lost this game? Absolutely not,” Cardinals coach Danny Heep said. “We got guys into scoring positions or on the corners, but then we’d hit a line into a double play and then, in the end, it’s a dribbler that beats us. But that’s just the way this game is.”
Tarleton narrowly defeated by No. 4 Central Missouri on walk-off hit - TSU Baseball
The Tarleton baseball team took on fourth-ranked Central Missouri Thursday down in San Antonio in V.J. Keefe Stadium and rallied to tie the game in the ninth, but the Mules took the victory with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
“It was a great college baseball game,” said Conger. “Hats off to Central Missouri. I’m really proud of our guys, the way they battled and competed. We had some opportunities, but were unable to take advantage. We just have to show up and be ready to play tomorrow though and do what we do.”
Storm Drop Regional Opener to ESU - SOSU Baseball
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 26 Southeastern knotted its South Central Regional contest against No. 8 Emporia State at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning, but allowed the hornets to score runs in their final four innings to suffer a 10-2 loss in its tournament opener in San Antonio, Texas.
The Savage Storm slip to 34-18 and will be back on the field on May 20 to face the winner of the St. Mary’s/Incarnate Word contest.
Chase Larsson Makes The Cut, Named To Tino Martinez Finalist List - CU Baseball
The Finalists for the 2011 The Tino Martinez Award have been named by College Baseball Lineup and Cameron slugger Chase Larsson is among the 8 names included on the list.
The award is presented to the most outstanding player in DII college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.
The final list was originally meant to include only five names, but with voting at the top to close to call, the final list was extended to eight names, with finalist representing a different school
Larsson, the newly crowned Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, NCBWA Player of the Year, ABCA Player of the year and Daktronics Player of the Year, is the only Lone Star Conference player on the list.
He had one of the most dominant seasons in the history of college baseball, leading the nation in home runs (29), RBI (84), slugging percentage (1.000), total bases (190), and runs scored (74) in his first season in Division II. He also set a new NCAA DII record for the most consecutive games with a homer (9), tops among all NCAA divisions.

For ACU it was the best team finish under Mike Campbell's tenure and the highest finish since 1997 as they knocked off Ft. MSU, West Texas head to rematch - Times Record News
The Midwestern State Mustangs were pushed to the limit last weekend in their half of the South Central Regional Tournament, while the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs had to take the long way to claim theirs.
As a result they'll meet this weekend in the NCAA Division II Super Regional at Mustangs Park.
Game 1 of the best-of-three series is set for 5 p.m. today, with Game 2 beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. A third game, if necessary, would follow at 4:30 p.m.
The winner will represent the region in the 2011 College World Series set for next week at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
The No. 5 Mustangs (50-11) rolled through South Central Regional I last weekend in Wichita Falls by claiming wins over Texas A&M International and Emporia State before defeating Angelo State to win the regional for the second straight season.
No. 12 West Texas A&M (49-16) dropped its opening game of the tournament to St. Mary's (Texas) before rattling off four straight homes wins over Missouri Western, St. Mary's and two times over Nebraska-Omaha.
Midwestern State and West Texas A&M have split two meetings this season with the Mustangs claiming a 2-0 win on Brittney Tanner's two-hit shutout at the LSC Crossover in San Angelo. The Lady Buffs took a 6-3 decision with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth at the LSC Championship in Durant, Okla., on the way to the title.

Track Announces Recruiting Class (Men) (Women) - TAMK Track
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville head track & field coach Ryan Dall announced his 2011 recruiting class on Thursday. He has added 13 women and six men to the roster.
Aricela Alvarez is a jumper from Bishop, TX where she went to Bishop High School. She was the 2011 District 31-2A triple jump champion with a leap of 35-0. She won the 2010 Regional Qualifiers meet at Javelina Stadium with a long jump of 17-8 and a triple jump of 35-8.
Brianna Bartosch is a sprinter-hurdler from Goliad, TX where she went to Goliad High School. She was the 2011 District 30-3A champion in the 100-meter hurdles and took fourth place at the Region IV Championships. She owns a top time of 14.37 in the hurdles while also earning district runner-up honors in the 200-meter dash (26.15) and in the triple jump (35-3).
Bethani Eberhart is a middle distance runner from Lindsay, TX and went to Lindsay High School. She has been a member of four state meet qualifying 4x400-meter relay teams and one 4x100-meter relay team. She was a part of the 1A State Championship Cross Country team in 2007 and third place teams in 2008 and 2010. She has a top time of 59 seconds in the 400 meters.
Logan Nelson is a sprinter from Orange Grove, TX where she went to Orange Grove High School. She was a three-time District 31-3A champion in the 100-meter dash and has a top time of 12.06. She also won the district championship in the 400-meter dash this year in a time of 60.73.
Chelsea Ikeda is a thrower from Keller, TX where she attended Keller Central High School. She won the District 7-5A championship in both the shot put and discus in 2011. Her personal best in the shot put is 38-2 and her best in the discus is 128-2.
Ashley Hesseltine is a high jumper from Corpus Christi, TX where she went to King High School. She finished second second in District 28-5A in 2011 and has a personal best of 5-2. She is the cousin of current Javelina men’s high jumper Trent Hesseltine.
Rebekah Jimenez is a distance runner from McAllen, TX where she went to McAllen Memorial High School. She was the 2010 District 31-3A Cross Country champion and posted a personal best time of 11:46 in the 2010 Region IV Championships. Her best times on the track are 2:24.7 in the 800 meters, 5:25 in the 1600 meters and 12:07 in the 3200 meters.
Taylor McCumber is a pole vaulter from George West, TX where she attended George West High School. She was a 2011 State Qualifier and Regional Runner-Up. She has a top clearance of 11-6 and was a teammate of current Javelina Amy Rabalais.
Meagan Lindsay is a distance runner from La Porte, TX where she went to La Porte High School. She was the District 21-5A champion in the 3200 meters and runner-up in the 1600 meters. She was a part of four district champion track teams and one champion cross country team. She has personal best times of 5:27 in the 1600 meters and 12:08 in the 3200 meters.
Amber Perry is a sprinter from Goliad, TX where she went to Goliad High School. She won the 400-meter dash State 3A titles in 2010 and 2011 with a top time of 55.65. She has a personal best of 25.22 in the 200 meters and 17-11.25 in the long jump. She turned down an offer from University of Nebraska.
Anna Richburg is a distance runner from La Porte, TX and attended La Porte High School. She was a member of four district championship track teams and made two regional appearances in cross country. She has a personal best time of 2:25.7 in the 800 meters.
Marisa Reyes is a distance runner from West Oso, TX and she attended West Oso High School. She was a two-time District 31-3A champion in the 1600 meters and won the district title in the 3200 meters this year. She was the district runner-up in cross country as a senior. She has a personal best time of 5:13 in the 1600 meters and 11:59 in the 3200 meters.
Porschea Wilson is a sprinter-jumper from Round Rock, TX where she went to Round Rock High School. She finished sixth in the Region II-5A 100-meter hurdles in 2011 with a time of 14.93 and has a top time of 14.77. She has posted a top time of 12.44 in the 100 meters and over 17 feet in the long jump.
Jarvous Bryant is a sprinter from Dallas, TX where he attended Carter High School and is a transfer from University of Mary. In high school he had personal bests of 10.50 in the 100 meters and 21.80 in the 200 meters. He then attended Neosho County Community College where he posted times of 6.86 in the 60 meters, 10.65 in the 100 meters and 21.73 in the 200 meters.
Catrell Butler is a hurdler from Pembroke Pines, FL where he attended Flanagan High School. He had scholastic personal bests of 14.61 in the 110-meter hurdles and 41.61 in the 300-meter hurdles. He recently attended Iowa Western Community College and qualified for the 2011 indoor and outdoor NJCAA National Championships in the 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles, respectively. He ran a personal best 8.27 in the 60-meter hurdles and 14.54 in the 110-meter hurdles.
Jaleal Butler is a hurdler from Pembroke Pines, FL where he attended Flanagan High School and is the brother of Catrell. He was a middle distance runner in high school, but will run the 400-meter hurdles. He had a top time of 56.87 in the hurdles at Iowa Western Community College.
Nicholas O’Brien is a decathlete that specializes in the pole vault. He is from Pine Bush, NY where he attended Pine Bush High School. He was the New York State Indoor Pole Vault Runner-Up and was 12th at the New Balance High School Indoor Nationals. He has a top clearance of 15-3 indoors and 14-6 outdoors. He has a top time of 15.59 in the 110-meter hurdles. He won the 2010 Empire State Games Decathlon with 5,223 points.
Andrew Wells is a thrower from Ontario, Canada where he went to Unionville High School. He was the 2010 Canadian Junior National Champion in the discus with a toss of 177-11, which was the seventh best throw in Canada. He finished 12th in his qualifying round at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships. He had a top shot put of 53-11.
Jordan Yamoah is a pole vaulter from Arlington, NY where he attended Arlington High School. He owns both the New York State indoor and outdoor pole vault records at 17-1 and 16-6.5, respectively. He finished third at the New Balance High School Indoor Nationals with a vault of 16-8. He is a two-time Penn Relays High School pole vault champion. He is ranked fifth in the nation in outdoors and was ranked second during the indoor season.

The Tarleton baseball team took on fourth-ranked Central Missouri Thursday down in San Antonio in V.J. Keefe Stadium and rallied to tie the game in the ninth, but the Mules took the victory with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
“It was a great college baseball game,” said Conger. “Hats off to Central Missouri. I’m really proud of our guys, the way they battled and competed. We had some opportunities, but were unable to take advantage. We just have to show up and be ready to play tomorrow though and do what we do.”

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 26 Southeastern knotted its South Central Regional contest against No. 8 Emporia State at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning, but allowed the hornets to score runs in their final four innings to suffer a 10-2 loss in its tournament opener in San Antonio, Texas.
The Savage Storm slip to 34-18 and will be back on the field on May 20 to face the winner of the St. Mary’s/Incarnate Word contest.
Chase Larsson Makes The Cut, Named To Tino Martinez Finalist List - CU Baseball
The Finalists for the 2011 The Tino Martinez Award have been named by College Baseball Lineup and Cameron slugger Chase Larsson is among the 8 names included on the list.
The award is presented to the most outstanding player in DII college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.
The final list was originally meant to include only five names, but with voting at the top to close to call, the final list was extended to eight names, with finalist representing a different school
Larsson, the newly crowned Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, NCBWA Player of the Year, ABCA Player of the year and Daktronics Player of the Year, is the only Lone Star Conference player on the list.
He had one of the most dominant seasons in the history of college baseball, leading the nation in home runs (29), RBI (84), slugging percentage (1.000), total bases (190), and runs scored (74) in his first season in Division II. He also set a new NCAA DII record for the most consecutive games with a homer (9), tops among all NCAA divisions.

Wildcats Fall In Semifinals - ACU Golf
For ACU it was the best team finish under Mike Campbell's tenure and the highest finish since 1997 as they knocked off Ft. Lewis, 4-1 before falling in the National Semifinal match with Cal State-Monterey Bay, 2-2-1 due to a tiebreaker of team score losing by six strokes on Thursday at the NCAA National Championships on the Fighting Joe Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

MSU, West Texas head to rematch - Times Record News
The Midwestern State Mustangs were pushed to the limit last weekend in their half of the South Central Regional Tournament, while the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs had to take the long way to claim theirs.
As a result they'll meet this weekend in the NCAA Division II Super Regional at Mustangs Park.
Game 1 of the best-of-three series is set for 5 p.m. today, with Game 2 beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. A third game, if necessary, would follow at 4:30 p.m.
The winner will represent the region in the 2011 College World Series set for next week at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
The No. 5 Mustangs (50-11) rolled through South Central Regional I last weekend in Wichita Falls by claiming wins over Texas A&M International and Emporia State before defeating Angelo State to win the regional for the second straight season.
No. 12 West Texas A&M (49-16) dropped its opening game of the tournament to St. Mary's (Texas) before rattling off four straight homes wins over Missouri Western, St. Mary's and two times over Nebraska-Omaha.
Midwestern State and West Texas A&M have split two meetings this season with the Mustangs claiming a 2-0 win on Brittney Tanner's two-hit shutout at the LSC Crossover in San Angelo. The Lady Buffs took a 6-3 decision with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth at the LSC Championship in Durant, Okla., on the way to the title.

Track Announces Recruiting Class (Men) (Women) - TAMK Track
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville head track & field coach Ryan Dall announced his 2011 recruiting class on Thursday. He has added 13 women and six men to the roster.
Aricela Alvarez is a jumper from Bishop, TX where she went to Bishop High School. She was the 2011 District 31-2A triple jump champion with a leap of 35-0. She won the 2010 Regional Qualifiers meet at Javelina Stadium with a long jump of 17-8 and a triple jump of 35-8.
Brianna Bartosch is a sprinter-hurdler from Goliad, TX where she went to Goliad High School. She was the 2011 District 30-3A champion in the 100-meter hurdles and took fourth place at the Region IV Championships. She owns a top time of 14.37 in the hurdles while also earning district runner-up honors in the 200-meter dash (26.15) and in the triple jump (35-3).
Bethani Eberhart is a middle distance runner from Lindsay, TX and went to Lindsay High School. She has been a member of four state meet qualifying 4x400-meter relay teams and one 4x100-meter relay team. She was a part of the 1A State Championship Cross Country team in 2007 and third place teams in 2008 and 2010. She has a top time of 59 seconds in the 400 meters.
Logan Nelson is a sprinter from Orange Grove, TX where she went to Orange Grove High School. She was a three-time District 31-3A champion in the 100-meter dash and has a top time of 12.06. She also won the district championship in the 400-meter dash this year in a time of 60.73.
Chelsea Ikeda is a thrower from Keller, TX where she attended Keller Central High School. She won the District 7-5A championship in both the shot put and discus in 2011. Her personal best in the shot put is 38-2 and her best in the discus is 128-2.
Ashley Hesseltine is a high jumper from Corpus Christi, TX where she went to King High School. She finished second second in District 28-5A in 2011 and has a personal best of 5-2. She is the cousin of current Javelina men’s high jumper Trent Hesseltine.
Rebekah Jimenez is a distance runner from McAllen, TX where she went to McAllen Memorial High School. She was the 2010 District 31-3A Cross Country champion and posted a personal best time of 11:46 in the 2010 Region IV Championships. Her best times on the track are 2:24.7 in the 800 meters, 5:25 in the 1600 meters and 12:07 in the 3200 meters.
Taylor McCumber is a pole vaulter from George West, TX where she attended George West High School. She was a 2011 State Qualifier and Regional Runner-Up. She has a top clearance of 11-6 and was a teammate of current Javelina Amy Rabalais.
Meagan Lindsay is a distance runner from La Porte, TX where she went to La Porte High School. She was the District 21-5A champion in the 3200 meters and runner-up in the 1600 meters. She was a part of four district champion track teams and one champion cross country team. She has personal best times of 5:27 in the 1600 meters and 12:08 in the 3200 meters.
Amber Perry is a sprinter from Goliad, TX where she went to Goliad High School. She won the 400-meter dash State 3A titles in 2010 and 2011 with a top time of 55.65. She has a personal best of 25.22 in the 200 meters and 17-11.25 in the long jump. She turned down an offer from University of Nebraska.
Anna Richburg is a distance runner from La Porte, TX and attended La Porte High School. She was a member of four district championship track teams and made two regional appearances in cross country. She has a personal best time of 2:25.7 in the 800 meters.
Marisa Reyes is a distance runner from West Oso, TX and she attended West Oso High School. She was a two-time District 31-3A champion in the 1600 meters and won the district title in the 3200 meters this year. She was the district runner-up in cross country as a senior. She has a personal best time of 5:13 in the 1600 meters and 11:59 in the 3200 meters.
Porschea Wilson is a sprinter-jumper from Round Rock, TX where she went to Round Rock High School. She finished sixth in the Region II-5A 100-meter hurdles in 2011 with a time of 14.93 and has a top time of 14.77. She has posted a top time of 12.44 in the 100 meters and over 17 feet in the long jump.
Jarvous Bryant is a sprinter from Dallas, TX where he attended Carter High School and is a transfer from University of Mary. In high school he had personal bests of 10.50 in the 100 meters and 21.80 in the 200 meters. He then attended Neosho County Community College where he posted times of 6.86 in the 60 meters, 10.65 in the 100 meters and 21.73 in the 200 meters.
Catrell Butler is a hurdler from Pembroke Pines, FL where he attended Flanagan High School. He had scholastic personal bests of 14.61 in the 110-meter hurdles and 41.61 in the 300-meter hurdles. He recently attended Iowa Western Community College and qualified for the 2011 indoor and outdoor NJCAA National Championships in the 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles, respectively. He ran a personal best 8.27 in the 60-meter hurdles and 14.54 in the 110-meter hurdles.
Jaleal Butler is a hurdler from Pembroke Pines, FL where he attended Flanagan High School and is the brother of Catrell. He was a middle distance runner in high school, but will run the 400-meter hurdles. He had a top time of 56.87 in the hurdles at Iowa Western Community College.
Nicholas O’Brien is a decathlete that specializes in the pole vault. He is from Pine Bush, NY where he attended Pine Bush High School. He was the New York State Indoor Pole Vault Runner-Up and was 12th at the New Balance High School Indoor Nationals. He has a top clearance of 15-3 indoors and 14-6 outdoors. He has a top time of 15.59 in the 110-meter hurdles. He won the 2010 Empire State Games Decathlon with 5,223 points.
Andrew Wells is a thrower from Ontario, Canada where he went to Unionville High School. He was the 2010 Canadian Junior National Champion in the discus with a toss of 177-11, which was the seventh best throw in Canada. He finished 12th in his qualifying round at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships. He had a top shot put of 53-11.
Jordan Yamoah is a pole vaulter from Arlington, NY where he attended Arlington High School. He owns both the New York State indoor and outdoor pole vault records at 17-1 and 16-6.5, respectively. He finished third at the New Balance High School Indoor Nationals with a vault of 16-8. He is a two-time Penn Relays High School pole vault champion. He is ranked fifth in the nation in outdoors and was ranked second during the indoor season.

UCO falls in men's golf national tournament
FLORENCE, Ala. (May 19) – Top-ranked Central Oklahoma dropped a trio of close matches and fell to Central Missouri in quarterfinal action at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships here Thursday.
The Bronchos, seeded fourth in the eight-team match play portion of the tournament that will determine the national champion, lost a 3-2 decision to the fifth-seeded Mules. UCM moved on face No. 2 Lynn in an afternoon semifinal, with Abilene Christian and Cal State-Monterey Bay to play in the other semi.
The two semifinal winners meet Friday morning for the national championship.
Baer Aneshansley romped to an eight-stroke victory and Josh Creel cruised to a four-shot win, but Andrew Green, Dillon Rust and Chris Muriana all lost their stroke-play matches. Rust fell just a shot short, while Green lost by two and Muriana by three.
The loss ended a brilliant season by the Bronchos, one that saw the team capture eight tournament titles, including the Lone Star Conference and South Central Regional crowns.
Aneshansley dominated the par-72 Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course for the second straight day, making eight birdies in shooting a career-best 66 to rout UCM’s Matt Miller by eight strokes. Aneshansley, who had a 67 Wednesday in the final round of stroke play, birdied 14 of 36 holes the last two days.
Creel had a 74 in downing Laurence Noott by four shots, going out in even-par 36 to take a two-stroke lead. Both golfers double bogeyed the par 5 10th hole and then Creel reeled off eight straight pars to pull away.
Rush birdied his ninth hole for an opening one-under 35 in taking a three-shot lead over Ryne Kloeppel, but a three-shot swing on No. 11 tied the match and Kloppel went ahead on No. 15. Both golfers birdied two of the last three holes to leave Kloeppel with a 71-72 victory.
Muriana trailed Jared King by three shots after the front nine before coming back to cut that deficit to one entering the final hole, but King sewed up the win on the 190-yard par-3 with a birdie while Muriana made double bogey.
Green was UCO’s last golfer on the course in the deciding match and he trailed Zack Van Dolah by three shots early before coming back to tie it on No. 11. Van Dolah took a two-stroke lead on the 13th hole and maintained that advantage for the 70-72 decision that broke the team tie.

With the NCAA Division II South Central Regional baseball tournament opening Thursday at V.J. Keefe Stadium, the spotlight will shine on the city’s talent pool. Both top-seeded St. Mary’s and No. 6 Incarnate Word have always recruited heavily in the local area. This year’s teams are no different.
Most of the players scheduled to compete in the UIW-St. Mary’s game Thursday night hail from San Antonio area high schools. St. Mary’s coach Charlie Migl likely will write down the names of eight starters from area schools on his lineup card. In contrast, Incarnate Word coach Danny Heep probably will send out seven starters from the area.
UIW’s star is left-handed starting pitcher Kirk Jewasko, a junior from East Central. Jewasko went 12-1 with a 3.31 earned run average for the Lone Star Conference champions. He was named LSC and regional Pitcher of the Year.

West Texas A&M's No. 9 hitter defies conventional softball wisdom.
Sophomore left fielder Meghan Slattery bats ninth for the No. 12 Lady Buffs, but she is no slouch at the plate. The right-handed hitter is fifth on the team in batting average (.316), third in RBIs (48), second in slugging percentage (.599) and second in home runs (12).
"Meghan brings a lot of different things to our offensive lineup out of the nine spot," WT coach Kevin Blaskowski said. "She brings the ability to bunt and get on base, but on top of that she is a contact hitter that can hit for power. She's really kind of another run-producer in the bottom of our lineup. Besides her speed and her ability to use the short game, her power is probably her greatest asset."
Slattery understands her role.
"The coaches always talked to me about being a nine-hole hitter," Slattery said. "The role of being a nine-hole hitter is always to make something happen. Nine-hole is like a double leadoff. I understand that with runners on base I need to be that person that brings them in, but if no one is on base I need to be able to make something happen because the top of the order is right behind me."
ASU softball hopes 2011 season just a bump in the road

For the first time since 2008, the Angelo State University softball team will not be playing in the Division II College World Series.
The Rambelles' season ended Sunday when they fell to Midwestern State in the if-necessary game of South Central Regional 1 in Wichita Falls.
The Mustangs advanced to this weekend's South Central Super Regional, where they will face West Texas A&M in a best-of-3 series for the regional title and World Series berth.
The Rambelles won that Super Regional each of the past two years, outlasting Midwestern State last season and Nebraska-Omaha in 2009.
ASU is expected to be playing deep into May. The Rambelles have now five conference championships, four regional championships and one national title since 2003.
They were the Lone Star Conference South Division regular-season champions this season. They went 2-2 at the conference tournament before pushing MSU to the if-necessary game of South Central Regional 1.
But when the season began back in February, there weren't many signs that the Rambelles could be as good as they were in 2009 and 2010, when they advanced to the College World Series.

Texans sign Division I guard Shedrick Haynes - TSU Basketball
STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texan men’s basketball program has announced its first signing of the offseason with the addition of NCAA Division I recruit Shedrick Haynes.
Haynes, a 6-0, 180-pound guard from Brandenton, Fla., will transfer from Big East Conference school South Florida to play his final season with the Texans in 2011-12.
“Shedrick brings an immediate impact guard to our program,” said Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman. “He is a multi-threat player. He is a great shooter, but he also has athletic ability to beat a defender and create his own shot or set up others. The thing that stood out most during the recruiting process was how great a young man Shedrick is and how he will become an excellent ambassador for our Tarleton basketball program. It was important to our staff to not only find a player with Shedrick’s ability, but also a guy that will lead vocally and by example. Shedrick has a desire to succeed, and during our meetings it was evident that he will bring a unique energy with him, and he can handle the lofty expectations we have here at Tarleton.”
Layssard signs with Texas A&M Kingsville - TAMK Basketball
When Ryan Layssard finished his high school basketball career at Opelousas High two years ago and set his sights on Baton Rouge Community College, he knew he was only halfway toward finishing his goal.
Wednesday, inside the OHS library with his parents and former coaches on hand, the 5-foot-9 point guard took yet another step toward earning a bachelor's degree, signing a letter of intent to play basketball at Texas A&M Kingsville, a Division II school that competes in the Lone Star Conference.
"This is a blessing from God," Layssard said. "It shows that hard work pays off."
"Ryan has been more than just a basketball player for us for the last two years. He's been our leader," BRCC coach James Rix said.
As a freshman Layssard led the Bears to 17 wins. This past season, he led the team to 18 on his way to becoming the first scholarship basketball player from BRCC, which instituted the program in '09, to sign with a four year institution.
"This year he was elected as our captain by his teammates and at the end of the season he was voted our most valuable player," Rix said. "We're very proud of Ryan and the effort he has given us and we wish him well."
SIGNING: ASU track team lands Sonora star Guerrero - Quinton Martinez, San Angelo Standard Times
Last Saturday, he was on the medal stand at the UIL state track meet in Austin collecting the bronze medal for third place in the 2A boys 400-meter dash.
In a little more than a week, he will receive his diploma from Sonora High School.
On Wednesday, Jesus Guerrero was busy tidying up the next four years of his life as he signed to run track at Angelo State.
Needless to say, it has been an exciting time in Guerrero's life.

TexAnns' Cooper leaves behind lengthy list of golf achievements - Marc David, Abilene Reporter News
Carla Cooper was an outstanding high school tennis player with three state doubles titles to her credit.
But tennis wasn't her racket when she came to Tarleton State. Instead, she became arguably the best golfer the school has had.
"She was my best golfer," said TexAnns 12th-year coach Jerry Doyle. "I am very upset at losing her and need a great player to replace her."
Cooper, 22, wasn't thrilled with how her career ended — she was 19th at the NCAA Division II Tournament as the TexAnns repeated their fourth-place team finish. However, it didn't deter from a noteworthy career that reached its apex in her senior season when she won the region and Lone Star Conference titles, was ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation and was averaging 72.96 strokes heading into the national tournament. Additionally, she was a two-time All-American and two-time Academic Player of the Year in the LSC.
"I wish I would have played better," Cooper said of the national tournament. "You have those tournaments when you don't do as well as you would like. I was pleased with the rest of my season and for the team."

ROD WEST JOINS A&M-COMMERCE COACHING STAFF - TAMC Football
COMMERCE, Texas -- Texas A&M University-Commerce head football coach Guy Morriss has announced the addition of Rod West to the Lions' coaching staff. West will handle responsibility for the A&M-Commerce defensive backs.
West comes to Commerce after a stint at Morehouse College where he served as the defensive backs coach. Prior to that, West was a graduate assistant coach at Delta State, serving on the staff that advanced to the Division II national championship game. West began his coaching career at Kentucky Christian in 2009, serving on the defensive staff that finished second in the nation in fewest passing yards per game.
The Selma, Alabama native played his college ball at Alabama State University, serving as a two-year starter at free safety and rover. West amassed 89 tackles and three interceptions as ASU ranked among the top-20 in scoring defense both his junior and senior seasons. He graduated cum laude in May 2009 with degree in English and a minor in Political Science

"The coaches always talked to me about being a nine-hole hitter," Slattery said. "The role of being a nine-hole hitter is always to make something happen. Nine-hole is like a double leadoff. I understand that with runners on base I need to be that person that brings them in, but if no one is on base I need to be able to make something happen because the top of the order is right behind me."
ASU softball hopes 2011 season just a bump in the road

For the first time since 2008, the Angelo State University softball team will not be playing in the Division II College World Series.
The Rambelles' season ended Sunday when they fell to Midwestern State in the if-necessary game of South Central Regional 1 in Wichita Falls.
The Mustangs advanced to this weekend's South Central Super Regional, where they will face West Texas A&M in a best-of-3 series for the regional title and World Series berth.
The Rambelles won that Super Regional each of the past two years, outlasting Midwestern State last season and Nebraska-Omaha in 2009.
ASU is expected to be playing deep into May. The Rambelles have now five conference championships, four regional championships and one national title since 2003.
They were the Lone Star Conference South Division regular-season champions this season. They went 2-2 at the conference tournament before pushing MSU to the if-necessary game of South Central Regional 1.
But when the season began back in February, there weren't many signs that the Rambelles could be as good as they were in 2009 and 2010, when they advanced to the College World Series.

Texans sign Division I guard Shedrick Haynes - TSU Basketball
STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texan men’s basketball program has announced its first signing of the offseason with the addition of NCAA Division I recruit Shedrick Haynes.
Haynes, a 6-0, 180-pound guard from Brandenton, Fla., will transfer from Big East Conference school South Florida to play his final season with the Texans in 2011-12.
“Shedrick brings an immediate impact guard to our program,” said Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman. “He is a multi-threat player. He is a great shooter, but he also has athletic ability to beat a defender and create his own shot or set up others. The thing that stood out most during the recruiting process was how great a young man Shedrick is and how he will become an excellent ambassador for our Tarleton basketball program. It was important to our staff to not only find a player with Shedrick’s ability, but also a guy that will lead vocally and by example. Shedrick has a desire to succeed, and during our meetings it was evident that he will bring a unique energy with him, and he can handle the lofty expectations we have here at Tarleton.”
Layssard signs with Texas A&M Kingsville - TAMK Basketball
When Ryan Layssard finished his high school basketball career at Opelousas High two years ago and set his sights on Baton Rouge Community College, he knew he was only halfway toward finishing his goal.
Wednesday, inside the OHS library with his parents and former coaches on hand, the 5-foot-9 point guard took yet another step toward earning a bachelor's degree, signing a letter of intent to play basketball at Texas A&M Kingsville, a Division II school that competes in the Lone Star Conference.
"This is a blessing from God," Layssard said. "It shows that hard work pays off."
"Ryan has been more than just a basketball player for us for the last two years. He's been our leader," BRCC coach James Rix said.
As a freshman Layssard led the Bears to 17 wins. This past season, he led the team to 18 on his way to becoming the first scholarship basketball player from BRCC, which instituted the program in '09, to sign with a four year institution.
"This year he was elected as our captain by his teammates and at the end of the season he was voted our most valuable player," Rix said. "We're very proud of Ryan and the effort he has given us and we wish him well."
SIGNING: ASU track team lands Sonora star Guerrero - Quinton Martinez, San Angelo Standard Times
Last Saturday, he was on the medal stand at the UIL state track meet in Austin collecting the bronze medal for third place in the 2A boys 400-meter dash.
In a little more than a week, he will receive his diploma from Sonora High School.
On Wednesday, Jesus Guerrero was busy tidying up the next four years of his life as he signed to run track at Angelo State.
Needless to say, it has been an exciting time in Guerrero's life.

TexAnns' Cooper leaves behind lengthy list of golf achievements - Marc David, Abilene Reporter News
Carla Cooper was an outstanding high school tennis player with three state doubles titles to her credit.
But tennis wasn't her racket when she came to Tarleton State. Instead, she became arguably the best golfer the school has had.
"She was my best golfer," said TexAnns 12th-year coach Jerry Doyle. "I am very upset at losing her and need a great player to replace her."
Cooper, 22, wasn't thrilled with how her career ended — she was 19th at the NCAA Division II Tournament as the TexAnns repeated their fourth-place team finish. However, it didn't deter from a noteworthy career that reached its apex in her senior season when she won the region and Lone Star Conference titles, was ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation and was averaging 72.96 strokes heading into the national tournament. Additionally, she was a two-time All-American and two-time Academic Player of the Year in the LSC.
"I wish I would have played better," Cooper said of the national tournament. "You have those tournaments when you don't do as well as you would like. I was pleased with the rest of my season and for the team."

ROD WEST JOINS A&M-COMMERCE COACHING STAFF - TAMC Football
COMMERCE, Texas -- Texas A&M University-Commerce head football coach Guy Morriss has announced the addition of Rod West to the Lions' coaching staff. West will handle responsibility for the A&M-Commerce defensive backs.
West comes to Commerce after a stint at Morehouse College where he served as the defensive backs coach. Prior to that, West was a graduate assistant coach at Delta State, serving on the staff that advanced to the Division II national championship game. West began his coaching career at Kentucky Christian in 2009, serving on the defensive staff that finished second in the nation in fewest passing yards per game.
The Selma, Alabama native played his college ball at Alabama State University, serving as a two-year starter at free safety and rover. West amassed 89 tackles and three interceptions as ASU ranked among the top-20 in scoring defense both his junior and senior seasons. He graduated cum laude in May 2009 with degree in English and a minor in Political Science

LSC announces Track & Field awards
Abilene Christian topped the All-Lone Star Conference awards with 16 of the 53 athletes on the list for their performances at the 2011 LSC Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships. The awards were announced Wednesday by league officials.
Abilene Christian won the men’s championship for the 18th consecutive year at the 2011 LSC meet with 10 all-conference athletes. Angelo State won the women’s crown for their third straight and fifth conference title behind the efforts of seven all-conference performers.
The list of all-conference performers includes the winner of each event at the conference meet, including all members of the winning relay teams, plus any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the meet. In all, 28 men and 25 women were recognized by the all-conference program
In addition to the announcement of All-LSC performers, the league recognized four student-athletes and two coaches with individual awards.
On the men’s side, ACU’s Desmond Jackson earned the Cap Shelton Award as Outstanding Male Track Athlete, while the Wildcats Ramon Sparks picked up the Oscar Strahan Award as Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Ryan Dall was named Men’s Track Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
For the women, Incarnate Word’s Elodie Barre’ claimed both the Wes Kittley Award as Outstanding Female Track Athlete and the David Noble Award as Outstanding Female Field Athlete. ASU’s James Reid earned Women’s Track Coach of the Year honors for the fifth straight year.

Tarleton players return to campus to prep for regional

Nathan Lewis thought his collegiate baseball career was over.
Tarleton State's senior right-handed pitcher who sports an 8-2 record this season departed for Florida immediately following the conclusion of the spring semester last week.
Shortstop Travis Hayes knew he still had a year remaining in his Texan career, but thought his impressive junior season - in which he sports a team-leading .403 batting average - was done. Hayes left Stephenville to camp in the mountains of Colorado as soon as his class work was complete.
By Tuesday, however, both had completed a rushed return trip to the Tarleton campus.
As soon as Tarleton head coach Bryan Conger learned his team had been invited to compete in the South Central Region phase of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, he knew he had a large obstacle ahead of him - finding his baseball team.
"We had fallen out of the (top six) in the regional poll, finals were done and the kids had gone home. We thought the season was over," said Conger. "Then Sunday night, we started making phone calls and rounding everyone up."
The Texans were a healthy No. 4 in the regional rankings entering the Lone Star Conference Championship, but consecutive losses in the opening two rounds of the tournament dropped them to No. 7 in last week's poll. The top six advance to the playoffs.
With no games remaining, it looked as if the season was indeed over.
But when the NCAA Championship selections were announced Sunday night, there was Tarleton, not only in the bracket, but as the No. 5 seed, one spot ahead of LSC regular-season champ Incarnate Word.
"I'm glad to see we're being rewarded for three months of excellent baseball instead of being punished for one bad weekend," said Conger.
Several players were still in Stephenville, including standout third-baseman Junnior Dishmey, who would have been the hardest to get back in time if he had departed for home in the Dominican Republic.
"A lot of the guys were still around, and by Monday we had 20 of our 24 roster players back here. The rest of them are on their way back today," Conger said Tuesday.
Some, however, were long gone.
"(Hayes') dad had to basically send a search party out (in the mountains) after him," Conger said. "Nathan's flying back in from Florida. It's been crazy."
Tarleton enters the regional with an overall record of 35-13. Before dropping games to Cameron - who just missed the regional by finishing seventh in the final poll - and Incarnate Word in the LSC Championship, the Texans posted the best regular-season win percentage (35-11 record for a .761 percentage) in school history.
Conger says it's critical that his team from the regular season, not the one from the LSC Championship, show up in San Antonio, where the regional tournament is being hosted by top-seeded St. Mary's.
"All year we were this relaxed, confident team that focused on winning games one pitch at a time," said the third-year head coach. "Then we got to the LSC tournament, one of our big goals was right there in front of us and we tightened up. That's not us," he continued. "We have to get back to being that relaxed team that played a great three months of baseball in the regular season."
Conger said part of that is a learning process.
"Winning, and then winning in the postseason, is a process you learn," Conger said. "I think we learned some things at the LSC Tournament, and I hope we benefit from that this week."
The Texans are preparing to open the double-elimination event against second-seeded Central Missouri at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, and Conger is hoping the team's first practice of the week was an indication of good things to come.
"We're a team with a second chance," he said. "We thought our season was over, and then when we found out we made it, it's like we came back relaxed and refocused. Monday was our best practice of the year."
Even without four players including their No. 1 pitcher and starting shortstop.
They're all back now, preparing for the school's first playoff trip in 13 years.
"We had all said our goodbyes to the seniors already," Conger said. "There was a lot of emotion, a lot of shock and disbelief when we called the guys and told them the news. There were some tears. Some of these seniors who thought their careers were over are looking at this as their second chance. It's going to be fun to see those guys compete this week."

Sheppard, Bouniol help ACU move up three spots to third at national golf tourney - Abilene Reporter News
Seniors Tyler Sheppard and Cyril Bouniol both had solid rounds Tuesday to help the Abilene Christian University Wildcats move up three spots to third after two rounds at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.
"The two seniors stepped up and played well when we needed it," ACU coach Mike Campbell said.
Sheppard, who shot a 74 on Tuesday, fired a 1-under-par 71 on the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals' Fighting Joe Course to move up eight spots and into a tie with three others for eighth — just four strokes off the lead. Bouniol, the defending national champion, is just a shot back of Sheppard after shooting a 72. He shares 12th with three other players, including teammate Trey Sullivan. A day after shooting the second-best score of the day at 70, Sullivan, the Lone Star Conference freshman of the year, shot a 76 on Tuesday.
Alex Carpenter, the LSC player of the year, shot a 75 to move into a tie with three others for 54th with a 155, while Kyle Dickerson rounds out the ACU team at 103rd out of 108 golfers (84-83—167).
UCO Sixth In National Meet - UCO Golf
FLORENCE, Ala. (May 17) – No. 1-ranked Central Oklahoma used a back-nine rally to overcome a rough start and stay in the mix of things on the second day of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships here Tuesday.
The Bronchos started on No. 10 and were 13-over-par after their first nine holes while making three triple bogeys and three double bogeys before going just two-over on the final nine in finishing with a 304. That has UCO sixth in the 20-team field with a 599 total after two trips around the tough par-72 Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.
The top-eight teams after Wednesday's final round advance to the match play portion of the tournament that will determine the national champion, with four first-round matches and two semifinal matches set for Thursday before the championship finals on Friday.

Cameron Climbs Two Spots Into A Tie For 17th After The Second Round Of The NCAA Championships - CU Golf
No. 21 Cameron is sitting in a tie for 17th place after round two of the NCAA DII Men's Golf Championships, jumping up two spots and improving on their day one score by eight strokes.
The Aggies shot a combined score of 309 (+21) and were again led by senior Jason Timmis, who finished with a two-over 74.
Cameron sought redemption on the par 5 No. 17, after yesterday's play saw scores of 5, 5, 6, 7 and 10 on the hole, and found it. As a team, the Aggies shot one-under on the hole and posted scores of 5, 6, 4, 4, 5.
Timmis' combined score of five-over (149) has him currently tied for 25th place, only eight strokes off the lead.
Kregg Wood continued his strong play, shoting a 76 (+4) and moving him into a tie for 54th place with an 11-over (155)
Other Aggies scores include: Trey Lawson (T-85/159), Brady Porter (T94/164) and Austin Weaver (T-100/166).
No. 1 ranked Lynn University remains in first place after shooting an identical three-over. No. 2 Ricardo Gouveia fell off his early pace, shooting a one-over 73 and dropping into a tie for second place at two-under (142). Three players are currently tied for the lead at three-under (141).
Cameron will return to the course Wednesday morning for round three. The Aggies are scheduled to tee off at 8:20 a.m. It will be their last chance to climb into the top eight.

Larsson voted NCBWA South Central Player of the Year, joined on All-Region teams by three fellow Aggies - CU Baseball
Lawton, Okla – Cameron Aggies junior outfielder Chase Larsson was named the NCBWA South Central Region’s Player of the Year, while also picking up first team honors on the South Central All-Region Team, in a news release from the National collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Larsson is joined on the first team by fellow outfielder, senior Kenny Held, and junior second baseman Josh Dawson. Senior pitcher Ricky Cramer was named to the second team.
Larsson had one of the most dominant seasons in the history of college baseball, leading the nation in home runs (29), RBI (84), slugging percentage (1.000), total bases (190), and runs scored (74) in his first season in Division II. He also set a new NCAA D2 record for the most consecutive games with a homer (9), tops among all NCAA divisions.
Kenny Held combined with Larsson for one of the most potent offensive duos in D2 this season. Held is among the top five hitters nationally in home runs (20), RBI (75), runs per game , triples (9), slugging percentage (.941), total bases (176), and on base percentage (.535). Held’s nine triples are a school record for the most in a season.
An All-LSC 1st Team selection for his performance at second base this season, Josh Dawson continued that play into the LSC Tournament, helping to lead the Aggies to the championship game, and earning All-Tournament team honors.
As a leadoff man, Dawson started all 49 games this season at second base and was third on the team in batting average(.393), on base percentage (.485) and runs scored (60) behind Larsson and Held.
Senior RHP Ricky Cramer was an All-LSC First Team performer after he led the conference in ERA with a sparkling 2.30 mark heading into the 2011 LSC Tournament.
He opened up the tournament with a complete game performance to stifle No. 21 Tarleton State, 4-1, and returned two days later to pitch a 6-4 gem into the ninth against SE Oklahoma in the championship game.
Kirk Jewasko of Incarnate Word nabbed Pitcher of the Year, while St. Mary’s head coach was awarded Coach of the Year.

Tough Schedule Awaits UCO In 2011
EDMOND (May 17) – A daunting schedule that includes four consecutive road games to start the season will confront Central Oklahoma in 2011, with the Bronchos set to play a full 11-game slate this fall.
UCO, which will compete as an NCAA Division II independent this year before moving into the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012, will play six of its first seven games on the road before finishing with four straight home contests.
The Bronchos will face one Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) team, eight Division II squads and two Division II provisional teams. The 11 opponents had a combined 64-58 record last year, with seven of the teams finishing .500 or better.
“It's definitely a difficult schedule and every team will face is a quality opponent,” UCO coach Tracy Holland said. “We're going to work hard to get ourselves prepared to play our best every week and we're looking forward to challenge.”
The Bronchos will open the 2011 campaign on Thursday, Sept 1 at three-time Division II national champion North Alabama, which went 9-4 last season in advancing to the second round of the playoffs.
UCO goes against a trio of former Lone Star Conference rivals the next three weeks, traveling to Southeastern Oklahoma on Sept. 10, Angelo State on Sept. 17 and Southwestern Oklahoma on Sept. 24.
The Bronchos make their Wantland Stadium debut on Oct. 1 against East Central with a 2 p.m. Homecoming contest before going on the road the next two weeks to play FCS member Cal Poly and future MIAA rival Washburn.
It will be UCO's first game against an FCS team since 2000, when the Bronchos lost a 38-31 overtime contest at Stephen F. Austin. Cal Poly finished 7-4 last year, while Washburn went 8-4 and won the Kanza Bowl.
UCO then finishes the season with four consecutive home games, starting with an Oct. 22 date against future MIAA foe Fort Hays State. The Bronchos will meet Black Hills State on Thursday, Oct. 27 before hosting Northeastern State (Nov. 5) and Lindenwood (Nov. 12) in the final two games.
UCO is coming off a 2-9 season.

Duckworth To Lead RiverHawks
Northeastern State University has named Tony Duckworth as its Director of Athletics. Duckworth, who will begin his duties on June 13, will be formally introduced at a press conference May 31, 2011, in the Webb Center Tower at 1 p.m.
"I am delighted that Tony Duckworth will be joining the NSU family as our leader of intercollegiate athletics," said Dr. Don Betz, NSU President. "Tony's experience, attitude, energy and passion for encouraging student athletic and academic success are a solid fit with Northeastern's vision and values. Tony will be a valued addition to the NSU leadership team."
Since 2007, Duckworth has served as the Director of Athletics at Maryville (Mo.) University in St. Louis and was a valuable resource in helping the institution transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II, while gaining membership in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Also a former associate athletic director and head basketball coach at Huntingdon (Ala.) College, Duckworth says he is prepared to lead RiverHawks Athletics as the sixth AD in school history.
"I am humbled and honored to have been selected as the Director of Athletics at NSU," said Duckworth. "My family and I are excited about becoming a part of the RiverHawks family.
"I certainly want to thank Dr. Betz, Tim Foutch and the search committee for the level of professionalism shown during the entire process. I am looking forward to working with the university and the athletic staff during the upcoming academic year, especially as we prepare and implement strategies for membership in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) in 2012."
Duckworth brings a wealth of experience on NCAA committees and has been involved in intercollegiate athletics for more than 18 years.

ANDERSON ANNOUNCES FIVE ADDITIONS TO 2011-12 A&M-COMMERCE ROSTER - TAMC Women's Basketball
COMMERCE, Texas – Texas A&M University-Commerce head women's basketball coach Nicole Anderson today announced the signing of five players to the Lions' 2011-12 roster. Breanna Harris, La'Tisha Hearn and Devin Oliver are local standouts that have committed to the Lions while Ashlee Johnson and Michelle Sutton will make the trip east after outstanding prep careers in California.
"This recruiting class brings depth, athleticism, quickness, rebounding and toughness to the post position and improves our ability to score from the guard position," said Anderson. "These young ladies having come from winning programs who have been successful locally and nationally. I am excited to see them compete in our conference and challenge our opponents."
Anderson addressed some specific needs in the offseason, bringing in three guards and two forwards as the Lions will have to replace All-Lone Star Conference honoree Mattilyn McIntyre as well as senior guard Anisha Ingram. To do so, she brought in some heavy hitters, including the leading scorer in Texas 5A girls basketball in 2010-11, the starting point guard on the seventh-ranked team in the nation, two state champions and five players with impressive high school credentials.
The newcomers should provide instant depth to a young Lion team that returns five of its six leading scorers and rebounders from 2010-11, including sophomore Danielle Dixon, who averaged 11.7 points and 3.5 rebounds last year and fellow sophomore Bianca Stevenson, who posted 9.5 points and 6.0 boards per game for A&M-Commerce.
Seniors Tyler Sheppard and Cyril Bouniol both had solid rounds Tuesday to help the Abilene Christian University Wildcats move up three spots to third after two rounds at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.
"The two seniors stepped up and played well when we needed it," ACU coach Mike Campbell said.
Sheppard, who shot a 74 on Tuesday, fired a 1-under-par 71 on the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals' Fighting Joe Course to move up eight spots and into a tie with three others for eighth — just four strokes off the lead. Bouniol, the defending national champion, is just a shot back of Sheppard after shooting a 72. He shares 12th with three other players, including teammate Trey Sullivan. A day after shooting the second-best score of the day at 70, Sullivan, the Lone Star Conference freshman of the year, shot a 76 on Tuesday.
Alex Carpenter, the LSC player of the year, shot a 75 to move into a tie with three others for 54th with a 155, while Kyle Dickerson rounds out the ACU team at 103rd out of 108 golfers (84-83—167).
UCO Sixth In National Meet - UCO Golf
FLORENCE, Ala. (May 17) – No. 1-ranked Central Oklahoma used a back-nine rally to overcome a rough start and stay in the mix of things on the second day of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships here Tuesday.
The Bronchos started on No. 10 and were 13-over-par after their first nine holes while making three triple bogeys and three double bogeys before going just two-over on the final nine in finishing with a 304. That has UCO sixth in the 20-team field with a 599 total after two trips around the tough par-72 Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.
The top-eight teams after Wednesday's final round advance to the match play portion of the tournament that will determine the national champion, with four first-round matches and two semifinal matches set for Thursday before the championship finals on Friday.

West Texas A&M junior Ben Hargis shot a 77 Tuesday and is tied for 30th after two days of the Division II men's national golf tournament on the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course in Florence, Ala.
Cameron Climbs Two Spots Into A Tie For 17th After The Second Round Of The NCAA Championships - CU Golf
No. 21 Cameron is sitting in a tie for 17th place after round two of the NCAA DII Men's Golf Championships, jumping up two spots and improving on their day one score by eight strokes.
The Aggies shot a combined score of 309 (+21) and were again led by senior Jason Timmis, who finished with a two-over 74.
Cameron sought redemption on the par 5 No. 17, after yesterday's play saw scores of 5, 5, 6, 7 and 10 on the hole, and found it. As a team, the Aggies shot one-under on the hole and posted scores of 5, 6, 4, 4, 5.
Timmis' combined score of five-over (149) has him currently tied for 25th place, only eight strokes off the lead.
Kregg Wood continued his strong play, shoting a 76 (+4) and moving him into a tie for 54th place with an 11-over (155)
Other Aggies scores include: Trey Lawson (T-85/159), Brady Porter (T94/164) and Austin Weaver (T-100/166).
No. 1 ranked Lynn University remains in first place after shooting an identical three-over. No. 2 Ricardo Gouveia fell off his early pace, shooting a one-over 73 and dropping into a tie for second place at two-under (142). Three players are currently tied for the lead at three-under (141).
Cameron will return to the course Wednesday morning for round three. The Aggies are scheduled to tee off at 8:20 a.m. It will be their last chance to climb into the top eight.
Only the top eight will advance into match play, which will decide the national champion for the first time in tournament history
