Field set for LSC Baseball Championship
The top six Lone Star Conference baseball teams will meet in Abilene, Texas, next weekend for the annual LSC Baseball Championship.
The tournament features six teams for the sixth straight year. The double-elimination event begins on Saturday and concludes on Tuesday. All games will take place at Crutcher Scott Field on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
LSC champion Incarnate Word is the top seed and also claimed its first-ever league title in their initial season. Southeastern Oklahoma is the No. 2 seed, while Tarleton State is third, followed by Cameron at No. 4, Southwestern Oklahoma at No. 5 and Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 6.

LSC Softball Championship field set
The eight-team field has been determined for this week's Lone Star Conference Softball Championship, which will be played over three days at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex in Durant, Okla., starting on Thursday, May 5.
The top four teams from both the North and South Divisions advanced to the NCAA Regional format double-elimination event. The field includes: Midwestern State, Southeastern Oklahoma, East Central and Cameron from the North and Angelo State, Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M and Texas Woman’s from the South.

MSU is the top seed in the North Division, while SE is No. 2, ECU is No. 3 and CU No. 4. The Mustangs claimed the North crown with a 13-4 record in league play.
ASU and UIW shared the South Division title with identical 15-6 marks, but the Rambelles are the No. 1 seed by virtue of winning two of three games against the Cardinals, who are in their first year of LSC play. UIW is the No. 2 seed, WTAMU is No. 3 and TWU is No. 4.
The tournament begins on Thursday at 12 p.m. with first round games. Action continues on Thursday with winner’s and loser’s bracket games at 2:30 p.m.

Dolphins grab Gates in fourth - ACU Football
NEW YORK – ACU's Edmond Gates is taking his talents to South Beach.
The Miami Dolphins made the former Wildcat all-America wide receiver the fourth current ex-ACU player in the NFL on Saturday when they selected him with the 14th pick of the fourth round (111th pick overall) of the NFL Draft. Gates joins former Wildcats Danieal Manning (Bears), Johnny Knox (Bears) and Bernard Scott (Bengals) as active NFL players.
Gates will be back in his home state on Nov. 24 as the Dolphins take on the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day at Cowboys Stadium.
Gates was an all-Lone Star Conference South Division Wide Receiver and South Division Wide Receiver of the Year in 2010. The honor is the second all-America award Gates has received this year after being named second team all-America by Daktronics earlier this month.
He became just the seventh player in ACU history to have a 1,000-yard receiving season totaling 1,065 yards. Gates is also just the fifth player in ACU history to have a 60-catch season as he now ranks in the top in all-time in ACU history in catches, yards, and TDs. He ranked second in the LSC and 25th in all of NCAA DII in receiving yards per game (98.5) and his 13 TDs were second for ACU behind only Harlon Hill candidate, Mitchell Gale.
ACU head coach Chris Thomsen said that the Dolphins were one of the teams seriously interested in Gates during the pre-draft evaluation process.
"We're obviously very happy for Edmond," Thomsen said. "He's worked really, really hard to put himself in that position. I'm glad he'll have a chance to play for a great organization (led by general manager and Abilene native, Jeff Ireland).
"Edmond gives them the vertical threat they need," he continued. "They've got some good players offensively, but they needed somebody to stretch the field and do some things in the return game. Hopefully he'll give them what they need."
WTAMU’s Burton Selected by Minnesota in 7th Round of NFL Draft - WTAM Football
CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M wide receiver Stephen Burton was chosen as the 33rd selection in the seventh round of the NFL draft, as announced today in New York N.Y.
A native of Lakewood, Calif., Burton (6-4, 210) was a first-team all Lone Star Conference South and a Don Hansen’s Football Gazette all-Super Region 4 selection after making 70 catches for 1,021 yards and 11 TDs in 2010. He ranked among National leaders in receiving yards per game, receptions per game and all-purpose yards, displayed his multi-talented abilities as both a receiver and a return specialist.
“It was very exciting to get the call,” Burton said. “I’ll be honest, I was so excited I don’t really know exactly who called me from the Vikings! I know there were a couple of people that were on the call with me, but it was a very exciting moment. I’m just thankful for the opportunity to get to continue playing football and to have the opportunity to play at the professional level. I’m ready to get to camp and start working.”
Burton gained LSC South Offensive Player of the Week honors after making five catches for 144 yards and two TDs against Tarleton State, including taking part in the longest pass play in WT history, a 99-yard catch and run.
Burton becomes the third Buffalo over the past three seasons to have been selected in the NFL draft, joining Keith Null (2009, 6th round-St. Louis), Eugene Sims (2010, 6th round-St. Louis) and J’Marcus Webb (2010, 7th round-Chicago).
