Tarleton claims fifth-straight regional title- LSC Office
The No. 3 Tarleton TexAnn golf team claimed its fifth-straight West Region title on Tuesday at Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo with senior Carla Cooper winning the individual title.
The TexAnns and Northeastern State’s Whitney McAteer will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships on May 11-14 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
Tarleton shot a 313 on the third day of competition to finish the three-round championship event with a 923 – 16 strokes ahead of St. Edward’s (939). Tarleton shot a 307 on Sunday and a 303 on Monday.
Cooper won the individual title by five strokes with a 222 (73-73-76). Jacqueline Lau and Melanie Tham tied for ninth with a 236 each. Lau shot an 80-81-75 while Tham shot 76-79-81. Katy Ward finished at No. 16 with a 237 (78-76-83) and Sharon Lau tied at No. 21 with a 240 (84-75-81).
NSU’s McAteer earned a spot at the national tournament as an individual. The sophomore won a playoff to move on after finishing tied for seventh with a 235 (76-77-82).
Western Washington finished third with a 943 while Central Oklahoma (951), Grand Canyon (954), Cal State-Monterey Bay (956), Northeastern State (970), Nebraska-Omaha (972) and Sonoma State (984) rounded out the field of competition.
Tarleton has now won eight of its 11 events this season, including the first four tournaments of the year and the last three as well. Cooper, the No. 1-ranked player in Division II, was the top-ranked golfer in Division II heading into the final round Tuesday. She has now won six individual titles this season.

Three LSC teams advance to national championships - LSC Office
The Abilene Christian men’s and women’s teams along with Cameron’s women’s squad have advanced to the 2011 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 11-14.
Men’s Tennis: #7 Abilene Christian 5, #19 Cameron 2
For the fifth consecutive year the ACU men will appear in the NCAA Division II national championship tennis tournament after knocking off Cameron for the third time this season, 5-2 in Monday's NCAA Division II South Central Region Championship in the Teague Special Events Center.
It was not an easy win, but the Wildcats were able to knock off Cameron for the third time in as many tries on Monday. Rain and cold weather that moved into the area on Sunday and lingered through Monday morning forced play inside.
ACU was pushed in nearly every match as it took a 2-1 lead into singles play picking up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. The Wildcats took No. 1 singles with freshman Hans Hach winning, 6-4, 6-4, but at No. 2 singles the Aggies would pull back within one point.
The best match of the day, however, was at No. 3 singles, which drew a crowd on the near court. The fans saw ACU's Alfredo Desiati knock off Manuel Barroetavena, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Desiati excited the crowd with a between-the-legs shot right before winning the final point to put the Wildcats within one point of taking the championship.
ACU was able to close out the match and advance thanks to a win at No. 4 singles from Jake Hendrie over Nicolas Clerc, 6-3, 6-4.
The Wildcats will advance to the national tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla., for the fifth consecutive year. ACU still awaits its first-round opponent, which will be the No. 1 seed from the Atlantic Region, either Bluefield State College or Shaw University. Play begins May 11 with the championship match set for May 14.
Aggie Women Win Regionals, Advance to National Tournament - CU Tennis
The nationally ranked No. 18 Cameron women’s tennis team earned their place in the NCAA Division II National Tournament after taking out No. 30 Midwestern State 5-3 in the NCAA Regional Tournament on Tuesday.
Things started out slow for the Aggies, as Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber were the only pair able to secure a doubles victory. The talented tandem overcame the No. 11 duo of Rozike van Rensburg and Alex Odell-Michels in a close 9-7 decision at the top position.
The CU teams at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots fell to the Mustangs 8-2 and 8-3 respectively.
Fortunately, the women were able to make a comeback in singles play.
Women’s tennis coach James Helvey said even after starting off in a hole after doubles, he was confident his team could pull out the win.
“Many times I thought we could win, even after doubles I still thought so. We were constantly fighting—it was just a matter of who was going to clench it,” he said.

Longtime Greyhound Skipper to Step Down After 20 Years - ENMU Baseball
PORTALES, N.M.— For the last 20 years and 456 wins, Phil Clabaugh has been the only man to step on the field as the head coach of the Eastern New Mexico University baseball program. Two seasons ago, he guided the squad to its first appearance in the Lone Star Conference championship. With 552 overall wins as a head coach, Clabaugh has retired as Eastern’s baseball coach.
Clabaugh arrived at ENMU in 1992 and revived the dormant baseball program from scratch, building Greyhound field and a team to play on it. The Hounds won 20 games that year and posted a higher winning total in each of his first five years. Four of his players are in the ENMU Athletic Hall of Honors, with standout Dallas McMann set for induction this fall.
When he came to ENMU, he joined the original quartet of Lone Star Conference coaches. The legendary group included Clabaugh, Bill Gillbreath (Abilene Christian), Ron Ihler (Cameron) and Wendell Simmons (Central Oklahoma).
The team was a reflection of its coach’s attitude and was known for closing strong, with 21 wins in its final at bat over the last three seasons, with many of those wins coming against some of the powerhouse squads in the Lone Star Conference. Last season, Clabaugh’s charges scored eight runs in their final regulation at bat against Angelo State, to win in extra innings. Clabaugh also left his mark on Greyhound Field by winning the last five home finales.
Greyhound Field is another prize Clabaugh will leave to Eastern, a facility that has seen numerous improvements during his time as coach. Two years ago, a new fence, giving the facility deeper dimensions, along with better bullpens was set up over the summer. Several years ago, the Greyhounds received their indoor practice facility next to the game field, which enabled the team to work on hitting and fielding during the cold early months of the season.
