Bronchos Third After First Round - UCO Golf
FLORENCE, Ala. (May 16) – Andrew Green fired a one-under-par 71 to lead top-ranked Central Oklahoma to a third-place standing after the first day of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships here Monday.

The Bronchos shot a seven-over-par 295 and trail opening-day leader Lynn by just four shots. Cal State-Monterey Bay is second at 294, with Central Missouri and Fort Lewis tied for fourth behind UCO at 296.

Second-round play begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the rugged par-72 the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course, with the Bronchos set to go off the No. 10 tee starting at 12:50 p.m. Click here to follow the live scoring.

The top-eight teams in the 20-team field after 54 holes advance to the match play portion of the tournament that will determine the national champion.

Green's 71 has him tied for ninth in the individual standings, just two shots behind leaders Ricardo Gouveia of Lynn and Oskar Nystrom of CSU-Monterey Bay.

The Bronchos also got a one-over 73 from Chris Muriana, while Baer Aneshansley shot 74, Dillon Rust 77 and Josh Creel 82.

The future is starting to come into focus for Cyril Bouniol, and the Abilene Christian University golfer has been able to concentrate more on his game as of late.

It shows, too.

Bouniol won the medalist title at the NCAA Division II South Central/Midwest Super Region tournament in Georgetown, Ky., on May 4, and now he's eager to defend his title at the national tournament, which began Monday at the Robert Trent Jones Trail at the Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

"This year has been a little different for me," he said, a week after his super regional victory. "It's my senior year, so I have a lot of things I'm trying to figure out for my future and my desire to stay in the States. So I've been spending a lot of energy on that. I'm getting closer to graduation, and things are starting to get figured out on their own. My mind is fully devoted to golf, and it's starting to pay off."

Abilene Christian University's Trey Sullivan, the Lone Star Conference freshman of the year, shot a 1-under par 70 to tie four others for fourth place — a shot off the lead — after the first round of the NCAA Men's Division II Golf Championships on Monday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals.

"I was real proud of Trey," ACU coach Mike Campbell said. "He stepped up and played really well. He's been playing well. He played well at the super regionals, so I knew he was hitting the ball well. He really stepped up today. I was proud of the way he played."

Thanks to Sullivan's opening round on the Fighting Joe Course, the Wildcats are sixth overall in the team standings with a 298 — seven shots behind front-running Lynn.

"We got ourselves in position," Campbell said. "We're going to have to play well the last two days. The saying is you can't win the tournament on the first round but you can lose it, and we definitely didn't lose it."


Hargis Tied for 15th after First Round of NCAA Men’s Championships - WTAM Golf
FLORENCE, Ala. – West Texas A&M’s Ben Hargis shot a one-over 73 during first-round play at the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships, held at the par 72, 7,150 yard Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals: Fighting Joe Course in Florence, Ala. First-round action was played in cool, windy conditions.

Competing as an individual, the Amarillo, Texas, native, birdied his first hole of the day, a 611-yard par five, while also registering birdies on holes 12 and 15. He also shot an eagle-three on the par 5, 524-yard seventh hole. He finished the day four shots off the lead.

"It felt good to start with a birdie to ease the nerves, but there are so many tough holes that I had to stay focused,” Hargis said. “I stayed patient through the tough stretch early and started hitting it closer towards the end of the day. I was able to take advantage on a few holes and ended up shooting a decent round."

Oskar Nystrom of CSU-Monterey Bay, Ricardo Gouveia of Lynn and Gavin Lyons of Fort Lewis College are tied for the individual lead with three-under-par 69 totals. Five other players are tied for fourth, just one stroke back at 70.

In the team scoring, Lynn University, making their fifth appearance in the Division II Men’s Golf Championship, turned in a three-over-par 291 total after 18 holes to lead the tournament. CSU-Monterey Bay shot 294 to stand at six-over, followed by Central Oklahoma (295), Central Missouri (296), Fort Lewis College ((296), Abilene Christian (298), Barton College (299), Hawaii-Hilo (301), Sonoma State (303) and Columbus State (306) in the top 10.

The tournament continues with stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday and will then move into Match Play on Thursday and Friday to determine the 2011 Division II National Champion. Hargis will begin his second round of play Tuesday morning at 7:40 a.m. CDT.


CU Men In 19th Place After Round 1 Of The NCAA DII National Championship - CU Golf
Muscle Shoals, Ala. - Cameron’s men’s golf team is in 19th place after their first round of the 2011 NCAA DII Championships, being played at the 8,092-yard, par-72 Robert Trent Jones – The Shoals Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

"I didn’t see this one coming," said Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar. "We had such a great week of practice. Today was like they flipped a switch -- dead opposite."

While Hrnciar said the Aggies, who shot a 317 (+29), could have played better, the day was not without uncontrollable factors for the golfers. Slow play by other competitors, Hrnciar said, created a time crunch on the Aggies final holes

"Every group we were with ran the last three holes," he said. "They (the golfers) had to run not be penalized, actually sprinting down the fairways. I’ve not seen that before. That definitely affected us."

Jason Timmis lead the way for Aggies on day one, shooting a three-over 75, tying him for 32nd overall at the time the Black and Gold left the course.


Other Aggies scores include: Trey Lawson (T-75/80), Austin Weaver (T-96/83) and Brady Porter (T100/84).

"The key to us doing well was to play without double bogeys on the par-3’s, and we needed to play without a bogey on par 5’s.," Hrnciar said. "We didn’t do that."

No. 1 ranked Lynn University is currently in first place, led by the no. 2 ranked golfer in DII, Ricardo Gouveia. Gouveia’s three-under 65 helped the Fighting Knights shoot a combined 295 (+3).

Cameron will return to the course Tuesday morning for round two, as Wood prepares to tee-off at 12:50 p.m.

"We can make a comeback," Hrnciar said. "It will be difficult, but we are capable of doing it if play like we should. We’ll just have to see. We’ve done it before, this year. We’ll see what we can do now. If we don’t come back, I know it won’t be because we weren’t putting the effort into it."

Timmis is followed by Kregg Wood, who shot a seven-over 79 on the day, placing him in a tie for 69th.

Sharon Lau named national Freshman of Year by NGCA, others honored - TSU Golf
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Tarleton’s Sharon Lau has been named the Division II Freshman of the Year by the National Golf Coaches Association while four TexAnns were named All-Americans.

Lau, who is Tarleton’s first ever national Freshman of the Year by the NGCA, helped the TexAnns to the 2011 Lone Star Conference and West Region championships this spring. The TexAnns finished fourth at the national tournament.

Carla Cooper was named to the NGCA Division II All-America First Team while Lau was joined by Jacqueline Lau on the NGCA Second Team. Katy Ward was selected as a NGCA Honorable Mention All-American.

Cooper was also placed on the NGCA All-West Region team for her success this season.
