NWOSU, SNU accept invites to GAC - Enid News and Eagle
Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Southern Nazarene University have accepted provisional membership invitations into the NCAA Division II Great American Conference.

Both institutions currently are members of the NAIA’s Sooner Athletic Conference and the Central States Football League.

Each school will gain full GAC status upon completing the three-year NCAA Division II membership process.

SNU and NWOSU will not compete in the GAC in the 2011-12 academic year, but it is anticipated that the pair will be added to conference schedules for the 2012-13 season.

Tennis: ACU men and women advance to national quarterfinals - LSC Office
Abilene Christian’s men’s and women’s teams both advanced to the quarterfinals after posting wins in the Round of 16 Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., while Cameron’s women fell to Barry.

The No. 6 ACU men proceed to the quarterfinals after sweeping No. 48 Shaw, 5-0. Following three wins in doubles, the Wildcats only gave up four points in singles play to eliminate Shaw from the tournament. ACU improved to 20-9 this season and faces Barry at 8 a.m. Thursday.

On the women’s side, No. 6 ACU took two doubles and three singles matches to defeat No. 45 Mesa State, 5-0. The Wildcats, who now boast a 23-7 record, play No. 3 Lynn in the quarterfinals Thursday at 12 p.m.

No.15 Cameron ended their season with a 5-0 loss to No. 5 Barry. The Aggies went down after losing all three doubles and two singles matches. CU’s finishes at 18-8 overall.

ACU tennis teams sweep into second round at nationals - Abilene Reporter News
The Abilene Christian men's and women's tennis teams opened the NCAA Division II national tournament with a pair of 5-0 victories Wednesday at Sanlando Park.

The ACU men beat Shaw to reach the national quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, while the women beat Mesa State (Colo.), to advance to the second round for the 19th time in 24 trips to the national tournament.

It's the first time both teams have won their openers at the national tournament since 1998, when they posted identical 5-2 victories over teams from California-Davis.

"It's really fun, when you do it Florida," ACU coach Hutton Jones said about the two victories. "We have a lot of parents out here, and a good fan base out here, and it's a lot of fun having that going on. It's real special."

Aggie Women Fall in National Tournament, Close Out Season - CU Tennis
The No. 15 Cameron women’s tennis team was knocked out by No. 2 Barry in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Division II National Championships on Wednesday.

The Aggie squad started out with a deficit after dropping all three doubles matches.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Barbi Pocza and Angie Werschel was too much for the No. 15 duo of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber. CU’s top tandem was defeated 8-2.

Sara Londono and Elvira Sholles were taken out 8-4 by the No. 22 twosome of Alex Gwizdowski and Laura Boguet at the No. 2 position.

Antonia Moberg and Florencia Tornero also lost at the No. 3 slot.

Unfortunately, the Aggie women were unable to change the momentum in singles play.

No. 23 Amanda Moberg was double bagelled by No. 3 Pocza at the top position, while Antonia Moberg fell 6-1, 6-0 to Boguet at the No. 5 spot. Those two singles losses sealed the 5-0 victory for Barry, allowing them to advance to the Quarterfinals of the championships.

The tough match-up against the Buccaneers marked the CU women’s last contest of an outstanding season. The team will finish the year with an 18-8 record.

Cameron women’s tennis coach James Helvey said he is more than pleased with the results the women have produced this season.

“I’m proud of our team. We worked very hard to get here,” he said. “We have one of the best teams in the country, and I am excited that they are all coming back.”

College Notes: Hamlin's Diggs 3-for-3 in LSC track titles at ASU- Marc David, Abilene Reporter News
Shelly Diggs expected to be in the trailing pack in the 800 at the Lone Star Conference Championships. But nobody seemed to want to take the lead, so the Hamlin product figured why not.

She didn't win the event, finishing third in a season-best 2:21.50, but the Angelo State junior was one key individual as the Rambelles won their third straight LSC title.

"I was really excited because it was a (personal record) for me," said Diggs, a nursing major. "After running the 800 in the heptathlon and preliminaries the day before, it was quite a feat to run a PR in the finals."

That means Diggs is 3 for 3 for LSC titles at ASU. It was expected in the last two years. This season was different, a far cry from last year's national championship team. With a new cast, the upperclassmen were expected to step up front and center.

"This was definitely the sweetest," said Diggs, who was also on the second-place 4 x 400 relay team and competed in the heptathlon at the conference meet. "It really is exciting to be three-time conference champions. We lost a lot of seniors who contributed a lot of points. We had to step up."

Women's Basketball Adds Two More - TAMK Basketball
Texas A&M-Kingsville interim head women’s basketball coach Crystal Oates announced that two more transfers had signed to play for the Javelinas next year, Ashley Jordan and Kaitlyn Lowen.

Jordan, a 5-10 forward from San Antonio, played two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where she recently graduated with her associates degree. She shot 43 percent from the field for the Lady Norse and averaged four rebounds per game. She played at James Madison High School in San Antonio where she averaged nine points, eight rebounds and three steals as a senior. “She is an aggressive and energetic player with a strong body to dominate the inside and help us control the boards,” said Oates. “She also possesses the skills to step out and play the face up game.”

Lowen, a 5-9 combo guard from Colorado Springs, CO, played two years at Otero Junior College. This past year she helped the team to a 25-6 record and closed out her career as part of the most successful class in school history tallying 49 wins. She averaged 5.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game last year. The strength of her game lies on defense where she matches up with the opponent’s best guard.

“I am very glad to add these two additions to the roster,” said Oates. “All of our signees are anxious to receive our summer workout program and get started with their preparations for the upcoming season.”

USF Bulls guard Shedrick Haynes transferring to D-II Tarleton State - Greg Auman, Times Staff Writer
USF point guard Shedrick Haynes, who played sparingly in his only season with the Bulls, said Monday he is transferring to Division II Tarleton State in Texas for his final year of college basketball.

Haynes, a Bradenton native who averaged 1.1 points per game for the Bulls as a junior, will be at his fourth school in as many years, having played at Manatee Community College and Lackawanna (Pa.) Junior College before signing with USF. Bulls coach Stan Heath never came to trust Haynes enough to see significant playing time, relying heavily on starting point guard Anthony Crater.

Sophomore Struggles - NSU Golf
Northeastern State's Whitney McAteer struggled to shoot an 8-over-par 80 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship at The Meadows Golf Club here Wednesday.

The sophomore from Jenks began the day with a triple bogey on the first hole, then had bogeys on Nos. 3 & 6. However, she regrouped to record six consecutive pars before a bogey at No. 12 to go six-over. McAteer got a shot back with a nice birdie on No. 14, but ended her round with a double at 15 and bogey at 18.

Playing as an individual in the event, McAteer sits in a tie for 45th overall after the first round. Play continues through Saturday with 18 holes daily.

Nova Southeastern (Fla.), behind Taylor Collins' 4-under-68, leads the team standings with a spectacular five-under-par 283 and is 10 strokes ahead of Rollins (Fla.) heading into Thursday's second round. Florida Southern (299) is third, followed by St. Edward's (305) and Tarleton State (306).
