No. 13 Mustangs ground Falcons 76-21 on Homecoming

No. 13 Midwestern State didn't leave any suspense in another Homecoming blowout rolling UT Permian Basin 76-21 in front of 8,772 fans Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs' scoring output was the second most in school history falling just shy of the record mark of 82 set at Western New Mexico during the 2001 season.

It was also the second biggest Homecoming stuffing paling only to a 73-6 rout of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 20, 2007. It's also MSU's eighth consecutive victory on Homecoming as the Mustangs improved to 7-1 on the season and 6-1 in league play.

MSU can clinch a share of its fourth Lone Star Conference championship with wins in the final two weeks beginning Saturday at Tarleton State and the following week in its regular season finale against Eastern New Mexico at Memorial Stadium...Complete Release

No. 8 Lions roll to 36-0 shutout of WT on Homecoming

In front of a Memorial Stadium-record crowd of 9,629 fans for Homecoming, the No. 8 Texas A&M-Commerce football team shut out conference foe West Texas A&M 36-0 on Saturday. The Lions forced six turnovers, returning two interceptions for touchdowns.

The Lions shutout the Buffs for the first time since 1996 to run their record to 7-1 on the season and 6-1 in the Lone Star Conference. WT drops to 5-4 on the season and 4-3 in the LSC.

The Lions next head to Odessa to take on UT Permian Basin on Saturday. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Ratliff Stadium...Complete Release

Big fourth quarter leads to win, keeps title hopes alive for Tarleton

The Texans remain in control of their own destiny for a share of the Lone Star Conference championship after stifling Oklahoma Panhandle State in a 45-26 win Saturday afternoon.

Tarleton snapped a streak of 11 consecutive quarters without a rushing touchdown by getting one apiece from Joseph Sadler and Jabari Anderson in the fourth quarter before Basil Jackson's second pick six of the season capped off a 21-point fourth quarter and a 45-26 victory for the Texans.

With the win, Tarleton moves to 5-2 in league play with games against Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce left on the schedule. MSU and A&M-C sit atop the league standings with identical 5-1 records in Lone Star Conference play and 6-1 records overall...Complete Release

Lopez Carries Hogs Past ENMU for Fourth Straight Win

Quickly becoming a fan favorite, running back Luis Lopez continued to plow through opponents and finished with 92 rushing yards and two touchdowns as Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-3, 4-3 LSC) earned its fourth consecutive Lone Star Conference victory with a 41-28 win over Eastern New Mexico (5-4, 4-3 LSC) Saturday evening at Javelina Stadium.

Mustangs Ride Dominant Defense to Win Over Angelo State

The Western New Mexico football team benefited from a stingy defense all day long as they limited Angelo State to just 276 yards and forced four turnovers on their way to claiming a 20-14 Lone Star Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

The win for WNMU (3-6, 3-4 LSC) snaps a four-game slide and moves them within a game of being .500 in the conference standings.

The defense made big plays early top help give the Mustangs momentum and a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Following a three-and-out to start the contest, the WNMU offense went right to work. After a big offside penalty kept the drive alive, senior Javia Hal  found sophomore Henry Norman twice on the drive, with the last being a 19-yard strike for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead nearly five minutes into the game...Complete Release

Angelo State at Western New Mexico
Let's just forget last week.  The Rams trailed at the half 20-14, but then gave up 28 second half points when their defense wasn't even on the field, on the way to a 62-14 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce.  The Mustangs trailed Fort Lewis 17-14 at the break, but three turnovers led to three TDs over a nine minute stretch, and WNMU was outscored 35-0 in the second half, losing 52-14 to their former RMAC rivals.  Okay, now forget it.

Javia Hall has played much better against LSC teams, compiling an 18-7 TD-Int ratio, while just 2-4 outside of the conference.  The key to the game will be how well the Rams run the ball.  WNMU is allowing 243 rushing yards in LSC games.  Rams control the clock and keep WNMU offense off the field, ASU 28-24


Tarleton State at Oklahoma Panhandle State
After 30 minutes you could not have asked for more if you were a Texan fan, up 17-0 and shutting down an explosive Texas A&M-Kingsville offense, with Zed Woerner having a great game.  The next 30 minutes were a nightmare, with the Javelinas totally shutting down TSU's offense (48 yards, 0 in the fourth quarter), and Woerner was running for his life, getting sacked at will.  The Aggies, on the other hand enjoyed their trip to Midland, getting their first LSC win, and Shane Truelove completing 40-49 passes for 610 yards.

While the offenses will get most of the attention, look for Tarleton's pass rush to get to Truelove enough to disrupt the Aggies.  TSU 45-35


West Texas A&M at Texas A&M-Commerce
The Buffaloes have certainly been fun to follow this year.  They have been really good at times, giving MSU their only loss this year, but also inconsistent, losing to ENMU and TAMK when they basically disappeared for large chunks of those games.  Ben Arbuckle has been lights out since stepping in for the injured Ethan Brinkley, completing 67% of his passes for more than 800 yards and 13 TDs (just 2 Ints) in about 2.5 games.  That's helped open things up for the ground game and Devon Paye.  Meanwhile for the Lions, the loss to MSU three weeks ago may have just been the wake up call they needed.  They totally dismantled Angelo State last week, with the all facets of the game contributing.  Richard Cooper and Luis Perez top the LSC statistical charts and the team is plus 12 in turnover margin.

If having a talent edge isn't enough, there are probably still some hard feelings toward WT from certain TAMC personnel (and probably always will be).  TAMC 42-24


Eastern New Mexico at Texas A&M-Kingsville
The Greyhounds have running the ball as expected, averaging 335 yards per game, despite Kamal Cass being limited by injury the last few weeks.  Across the line, the Javelinas lead the LSC in rushing defense, giving up just 83 yards per game and just 2.5 per carry.  Even adding in the negative yards for sacks, and they are allowing just 110.  Wyatt Strand can hurt you passing the ball if the opportunity, in fact he had back to back games of 260 yards against UTPB and TSU.  The Javelinas are more balanced on offense, running for 118 and throwing for 237.  Myles Carr has a 20-5 TD-Int ratio, and has thrown TD passes to 8 different receivers.  Watch for TE Stehley Reden who has 7 receptions for 160 yards and 3 TDs over the last three weeks.

The Greyhounds have won once in Javelina Stadium (2014), but this isn't the same caliber Javelina team.  Hogs give yards, but get enough stops to eke out a 38-35 win.


UT-Permian Basin at Midwestern State
The Falcons had their best shot at their first LSC win, pulling to within 4 points on three different occasions in the second half, but could not get a stop for 5 consecutive OPSU possessions.  The offense had fun (503 yards, 44 points), but the defense was overmatched, giving up 750 yards.  The Mustangs played with fire one too many times, and were unable to pull out another last minute win in Canyon.  The Mustangs fell behind 21-0 in the first half, but scored the next 24 points, to take the lead with under a minute to play in the third quarter.  But a quick 74 yard TD run and a game clinching 11 play 78 yard game clinching drive by WT handed MSU their first loss of the season.  Quade Coward completed just 3 of his last 12 passes on MSU's final two possessions.

The Mustangs can forget last week, and just enjoy a comfortable win over the Falcons. MSU 45-10

Defense and special teams rule the night in No. 9 Lions' 62-14 rout of Angelo State

The No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions scored the game's final 55 points on the way to a 62-14 rout of Angelo State at LeGrand Stadium on Saturday night.

With the runaway victory, the Lions are now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Lone Star Conference, while ASU falls to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the league.

The Lions return to Commerce next week for the annual Homecoming contest, hosting West Texas A&M for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, October 29...Complete Release

Buffs Upset Fourth Ranked Midwestern State 35-27 in Highway 287 Challenge Thriller

A career-high 177 yards rushing and three total touchdowns from West Texas A&M senior running back Devon Paye helped the Buffs to a thrilling 35-27 victory over fourth-ranked Midwestern State Saturday evening at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.  With the win, the Buffs improved to 5-3 on the year and 4-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while MSU suffered its first defeat of the season falling to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

Paye had 30 carries for 177 yards and two scores on the ground, while he had a team-high six catches for 19 yards and a score.  Sophomore quarterback Ben Arbuckle made his second career start and improved to 2-0 as he went 22 of 29 for 178 yards and two scores.  

As a team, the Buffs tallied 396 yards of offense on a season-high 218 yards on the ground on 45 carries and 178 yards passing.  The Buffs were 8 of 15 on third down and 1 of 1 on fourth down.  MSU had 192 yards on the ground with 146 through the air as the Mustangs were 7 of 18 on third down and 2 of 4 on fourth down.  Both teams had one turnover in the game...Complete Release

Hogs Complete Comeback, Win 21-17 at Tarleton State

It didn't come easy as they were on the wrong end of a 17-0 ballgame but the Texas A&M-Kingsville football (5-3, 3-3 LSC) won its third consecutive Lone Star Conference contest, blanking Tarleton State (4-4, 4-2 LSC) in the second half en route to a 21-17 come from behind victory Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Javelinas improve to 3-3 in conference play.

The game-winning drive was the longest of the game as Tarleton pinned the ball inside the one. The Hogs drove the length of the field on eight plays.

Alex Kuyinu finished with a game-high 4.0 sacks for 16 yards and Caleb Valentine added 2.0 sacks for nine yards and 2.5 tackles for loss for 10 yards, as did ZeMarcus Green. All in all, the Hogs tallied 8.0 total sacks and 13.0 tackles for loss. Greg Pitre rushed for 95 yards on 19 carries and the play of the game late in the fourth quarter had to be a 42 yard rush by Luis Lopez after what looked to originally be a one yard gain. Lopez picked up 61 yards on the ground. Myles Carr tossed two touchdowns and finished 22-of-35. He connected with tight end Stehly Reden twice as Reden finished with three receptions for 56 yards and two scores. Kyle Plum added six catches for 59 yards...Complete Release

Falcons Unable to Rebound from Early Deficit in 54-44 Loss to OPSU

UT Permian Basin football found the end zone six different times Saturday night but were unable to hold off Oklahoma Panhandle State after the Aggies scores the first two TDs of the night in a 54-44 loss at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.

Kameron Mathis ended the night throwing for 322 yards on 27-49 passing with four touchdowns, the first coming on 4th-and-8 from the OPSU 42-yard line as Jake Anglin made it to the end zone to cut a 14-0 deficit in half.

The Falcons got rushing touchdowns from Jason McAfee (nine yards) and Marquise Simmons (five yards), and held the Aggies scoreless in the second quarter to trail by a point at 21-20 heading into halftime...Complete Release

Gridiron Greyhounds Overpower Bacone in First Shutout at Home Since 2004

Eastern New Mexico quarterback Wyatt Strand registered 178 yards of total offense with two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns, to lead the Greyhounds (5-4) to a 62-0 victory over visiting Bacone (2-6). Eastern allowed just three first downs in a first half which saw the Hounds race to a 49-0 lead, Saturday at Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium.

In its first home shutout win since the 2004 season, ENMU allowed just 129 yards of total offense. The Greyhound defense registered five quarterback sacks, with Tuisamo Magalei and Dakota Montoya contributing one each. Skyhawks Fly Past Mustangs

Despite scoring first and being down just three at halftime, the second half was all Fort Lewis as they outscored the Western New Mexico football team 35-0 over the final 30 minutes of the game to take the 52-14 non-conference victory Saturday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

The former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents met as non-conference foes and the Skyhawks made it three straight wins at home over the Mustangs.  

WNMU (2-6) started the game out strong after forcing an early punt by FLC (2-6), WNMU had the ball at their 26. Redshirt junior Tracy McNair  got loose on the first play from scrimmage for the Mustang offense and went 66 yards down to the FLC 8. The next snap, senior Javia Hall found fellow senior Xavier Ayers for the eight-yard TD to take the early 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game...Complete Release
