NCAA upgrade appeals to ACU, but has its challenges - Mike Roark, Abilene Reporter News
Abilene Christian University's consideration of a move to NCAA Division I isn't new information for most Wildcats fans in the Big Country.
ACU officials have talked openly in the past year about the possibility of leaving their home in the Division II Lone Star Conference for the chance to play in Division I. The football team would play in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), while all the other sports would be Division I.
The topic came up again this week, when ACU President Phil Schubert spoke about his university at a meeting of the Abilene Kiwanis Club.
Schubert told the Reporter-News on Thursday that his school has been looking at the possibly making such a move since last summer and he and his staff have spent quite an amount of time researching the topic with officials from the Division I Southland Conference, the NCAA and other universities that have changed divisions in recent years.
He emphasized, though, that the university is considering all its options — including staying in the LSC.
"No decisions have been ruled out, except to go to Division III," Schubert said. "A lot about Division I is attractive to ACU."

With the 2011 NFL draft beginning Thursday former Javelina Tackle Trent Perkins is wondering what his NFL future will be. Not expected to hear his name called during the draft, he should be a free agent signee Saturday or Sunday night.
The NFL expects to release detailed guidelines for free agency, trades and other roster moves by Friday in the absence of a collective bargaining agreement.
The 45-day lockout meanwhile left Perkins with plenty of questions and no answers admitting that he hadn't heard from a single team until a federal judge finally lifted the lockout. Prior to that he told me nearly a dozen teams had contacted him.
"With the uncertainty of everything it does get frustrating, but you can only take care of what you have control over, so as long as I am ready and in shape and not lazy I just have to wait and see what happens and be ready for that call," said Perkins.
Teammates Ryan Lincoln ( Wide Receiver ) and Tressor Baptiste ( Linebacker ) are also NFL prospects.

To earn a berth in the Lone Star Conference baseball tournament May 7-10, WT pretty much has to pull off a sweep of a three-game LSC series against Tarleton State in its final regular-season games.
Game one is set for 6 tonight at Wilder Park in Canyon, followed by a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

MEN’S TRACK
Desmond Jackson, Abilene Christian University, SR, Midland, Texas, Midland Lee HS
Jackson finished second in the invitational 100 and 200 against fields made up entirely of Division I and professional runners at the Baylor Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic, with PR times of 10.22 in the 100 and 20.79 in the 200. Both times moved the senior up to the #2 position in all of Division II and established him as one of the premier sprint talents in the U.S. regardless of division.
CO-MEN’S FIELD
Jacob McDonald, Angelo State University, SO, San Angelo, Texas, Lake View HS
McDonald topped teammate Andrew Allison on a judge’s decision as the Angelo State duo matched six other pole vaulters with the third-best marks at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at Baylor Saturday. The junior’s vault of 16’-6.75” (5.05m) is the best in the Lone Star Conference (along with Allison) and is tied for third-best in all of NCAA Division II this season. McDonald became the sixth Angelo State student-athlete to provisionally qualify in the pole vault during the 2011 campaign. The mark was also a personal best.
Servell Dandridge, West Texas A&M University, SO, DeSoto, Texas, Duncanville HS
Dandridge had a phenomenal day last weekend at the Texas Tech Open as he set an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark in the men’s discus event. The sophomore thrower finished third overall, but was the highest finisher among DII competitors as he tossed an automatic mark of 179’-08”. Dandridge also finished fifth on the day in the shot put event with a toss of 48’-08.5”.
Bill Squire, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, Hagerman, N.M., Hagerman HS
Squire participated in three events and turned in two NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks with three top-five performances last Friday at the Texas Tech Invitational. He set a personal record in the shot put with a provisional qualifying toss of 54’-10”, which placed him second in the meet, and propelled him to 17th in the nation. Squire also finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 181’-05” for another provisional mark. Rounding out the meet, the junior tossed the discus 159’-11” which was good for 5th place.
WOMEN’S TRACK
Diana Zarate, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, SR, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, San Patricio HS
Prior to the month of April, Zarate had not broken 1:05.00 in the 400-meter hurdles, but has been on fire since the calendar changed. Last week, she finished second at the J. Fred Duckett Invitational hosted by Rice with a career best time of 1:02.08. She provisionally qualified for nationals and has the best time in the LSC this year by over two seconds.
WOMEN’S FIELD
Samantha Alvarez, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, SO, Victoria, Texas, Memorial HS
Alvarez had another strong performance this past week at the J. Fred Duckett Invitational hosted by Rice. She nearly picked up her fifth win of the year in the high jump with a clearance of 5’-7.25”. She tied for first, but lost out on number of misses. She also performed well in the pole vault clearing 11-’2.5”, her third best mark of the season and seventh time she has gone over 11 feet.

White Tops Blue in Annual Spring Game - SOSU Football
DURANT, Okla. – The White team jumped to an early lead and held off a charge from the Blue team to pick up a 36-23 win in Southeastern football’s annual Spring Game on Thursday evening.
The White team, made up of the offensive players, put up 365 yards through the air and another 103 on the ground in 71 offensive plays.
The Blue team, comprised of the SE defense, forced one turnover as well as a sack and held the offense off the scoreboard in eight of the 13 total possessions.
The score came about through a modified system which awarded the offense points as they would normally earn them, via touchdowns and field goals, while the defense was awarded six points for a turnover forced, three points for holding the offense to a three-and-out and one point for keeping them off the scoreboard on a drive.
Logan Turner continued to build on his performance from last season, going 10-of-15 passing for 184 yards and three touchdowns.
Five quarterbacks saw action in the game with all of them completing passes. SE finished the day 25-of-37 as a team passing for 365 yards.
Brandon Bryant had the best day running the ball, rushing for 69 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown.
Josh Johnson made his return to the field this spring after missing the 2010 season due to an injury and turned in a solid performance, picking up 34 yards on six carries with a touchdown.
On the day, 13 different receivers had catches, with Josh Morris and Aaron Stringfellow proving to be the most popular targets, each snagging three catches.
Seven other receivers had two catches each.
Ryan Shelley, Quentin Morris and Hunter Phelan each caught touchdowns from Turner on the evening.
On defense, Eric Walker provided the big scoring play with an interception on the goal line that saved a score.
Terrence Simmons also stepped up with a drive ending sack.
The Storm did welcome some special guests as Great American Conference head of officials Jeff Roberson spent the day on campus with a large group of potential officials for the league heading into the 2011 season. After a day of covering the basics, the crew worked on rotations to handle officiating for the Spring Game.
The Savage Storm will open the 2011 season on Sept. 10 when it hosts Central Oklahoma at Paul Laird Field.

Signing Day Recap - Tarleton State
To say that the 2010 was a disappointment for the Texans is a huge understatement. A year removed from advancing into the second round of the NCAA playoffs, Tarleton State finished 2010 with a 3-8 record, capped off with a 35-10 home loss to Eastern New Mexico. Offensive production fell by 10 points and 52 yards per game, while the defense allowed 12 points and 61 more yards per contest. Injuries and inexperience were a big part of the falloff, but that should not be the case going forward.
Offense -
The biggest losses are up front, as Bubba Wagner, Mike Hernandez (both HM LSC South) and Josh Martin were seniors last year.
Expected back are RB Evan Robertson (1st LSC South, 771 yds 6 TDs rushing), QB Nick Stephens (HM LSC South, 1,774 yds, 9 TDs, 12 Ints), WRs Jeken Frye, Devon Gray, Jamal Mays, Saalim Hakim, and Clarke Renfro (combined 119 receptions, 1,720 yds and 13 TDs). Jonathan Arnold, Adrian Campbell, Shawn Wyatt, Solomon Orr and Zac Munro all started 2-7 games on the line. TEs Will McLane and Bradley Peschke are also back.
Defense -
The Texan defense does lose some talented players - DEs Jamaal Steamer (received LSC honors all four years he played) and Jacob Rowe (HM LSC South) combined for 86 tackles, 21 for loss, and 9.5 sacks. In the secondary, Brandon Johnson and Lonnie Buchanan both received HM LSC South honors. Backups, LB Corey White and DB Sam Cole will also be missed.
Returning for Tarleton are six linemen with at least two starts (Michael Washington, Logan Johnson, Jason Billings, Danile Mena, Brian Ford, and Cole Vitolo) as well as Anthony Gonzales. Damian Perkins, Matt Knicky (both HM LSC South), Julius Hurndon, and Levi Kirkland are expected back at LB. The secondary should have Terrence Henry, Cassius Bradley, Blair Johnson and Dashaun Phillips back as the most experienced players.
Special Teams -
The special teams skill players shoule return intact. Blake Wiest was good on 12-17 FGs, and 24-25 PATs, while Jerry Owens averaged 36.9 on punts and 57.7 yards on kickoffs. Dashaun Phillips was the leading punt returner (8.2 yd avg) and Brandon Lowery averaged 31.4 yds on kickoff returns.

Edmond Gates walked away from football after his freshman year at Vernon High School, because he thought he was too small to play the game.
Now, after walking onto the Abilene Christian University football team four years ago, the 6-foot-1 receiver will likely hear his name called during the NFL draft, which begins today and concludes Saturday.
Even Gates marvels at the turn of events that led him back to football — and the chance to play at the game's highest level — four years ago. Gates thought he was done with the sport when he quit the game after his freshman year, because he figured he was too small. Gates was a scrawny, 5-7 teenager at the time. He chose to focus on basketball instead.
"I thought I would never play football again," he said. "I love watching it. But as far as playing, I told myself I'd never play football. I don't see how people do it."

Four women’s teams – Abilene Christian, Cameron, Midwestern State and Tarleton - and two men’s squads – ACU and CU will compete for a trip to the championships May 11-14 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
On the men's side, the Aggies will take on the Wildcats at 10:30 a.m. Monday for the right to advance to the national tournament. The other two South Central Region teams will play Monday in Austin as St. Edward's hosts Northwest Missouri State.
The ACU women will host Southwest Baptist and Tarleton State in a three-team regional. Tarleton will take on SBU at 2 p.m. Sunday for the right to play ACU in Monday's 11:30 a.m. championship match.

Midwestern State announces 2011 football slate - MSU Football
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The changing landscape of football in the Lone Star Conference contributed to a very different schedule for Midwestern State in 2011.
The slate features four home games and much heralded appearance in the LSC Football Festival on Sep. 17 at Cowboys Stadium.
The schedule was necessitated by the departure of the majority of the former LSC North Division as East Central (Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma State and Southwestern Oklahoma State head to the newly founded Great American Conference in 2011 while Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State will serve a season an independent before entering the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
"Scheduling has been very difficult in this transition year with the loss of the five Oklahoma schools," MSU Athletics Director Charlie Carr said. "We would prefer another game if possible and continue to explore an possibilities for Sep. 3."
The Mustangs open the season against Missouri S&T on Sep. 10 in Rolla. It marks MSU's first meeting on the gridiron against the defending Great Lakes Valley Conference co-champion Miners.
Midwestern State kicks off LSC play the following week when it takes on Texas A&M-Commerce as part of the LSC Football Festival and Fourth Annual Harvey Martin Classic at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Kickoff is set for noon as the Mustangs and Lions meet for the first time since 2005.
Tickets for the festival are available in the MSU Athletics offices for $25 for adults and $10 for students with proper identification. Each admission is for each of the three games of the tripleheader which also features Abilene Christian against North Alabama at 4 p.m. and West Texas A&M versus Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m.
MSU makes its home debut the next week for Family Day against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Mustangs alternate home and away games the rest of the season with home dates against Tarleton State on Oct. 8, Abilene Christian for Homecoming on Oct. 22 and West Texas A&M for Military Appreciation Day on Nov. 5.
MSU hits the road for contests against Incarnate Word on Oct. 1, Angelo State on Oct. 15 and Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 29 before closing the regular season against Northeastern State (Okla.) in Tahlequah on Nov. 12.

The Mustangs open the season against Missouri S&T on Sep. 10 in Rolla. It marks MSU's first meeting on the gridiron against the defending Great Lakes Valley Conference co-champion Miners.
Midwestern State kicks off LSC play the following week when it takes on Texas A&M-Commerce as part of the LSC Football Festival and Fourth Annual Harvey Martin Classic at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Kickoff is set for noon as the Mustangs and Lions meet for the first time since 2005.
Tickets for the festival are available in the MSU Athletics offices for $25 for adults and $10 for students with proper identification. Each admission is for each of the three games of the tripleheader which also features Abilene Christian against North Alabama at 4 p.m. and West Texas A&M versus Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m.
MSU makes its home debut the next week for Family Day against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Mustangs alternate home and away games the rest of the season with home dates against Tarleton State on Oct. 8, Abilene Christian for Homecoming on Oct. 22 and West Texas A&M for Military Appreciation Day on Nov. 5.
MSU hits the road for contests against Incarnate Word on Oct. 1, Angelo State on Oct. 15 and Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 29 before closing the regular season against Northeastern State (Okla.) in Tahlequah on Nov. 12.
Season tickets can be purchased through the Midwestern State Athletic Offices at 397-4779.
Midwestern State tops the Lone Star Conference with 11 consecutive winning seasons dating back to the 2000 season and is coming off consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in program history.

Signing Day Recap - Midwestern State
Midwestern State took a bit of a step back last year. LSC tri-champions and a playoff qualifier in 2009, the Mustangs went 8-4 in 2010, finishing the season with a 45-14 loss to Washburn in the Kanza Bowl, and struggling to regular season wins against Central Oklahoma, Incarnate Word and Tarleton State. The offense scored 31.8 pts per game (down 3.1 pts) and gained 398 yards (down 29 yds). The defense allowed 23.9 points and 373 yards, which was 10.3 points and 60 yards worse than 2009.
Offense -
Seven starters from last year are gone. QB Zack Eskridge is the biggest loss - he leaves as MSU's all-time leading passer, throwing for 6,953 yards, with 64 TDs and 20 Ints in three seasons. He was a 1st team LSC South selection in 2009, and a 2nd teamer last fall. Marcus Mathis is third on MSU's career rushing charts with 2,433 yards and 17 TDs, and was a two time HM LSC South honoree. WR Justin Rideau was solid, with 34 catches for 366 yards and 2 TDs. Up front, MSU will need to replace Hank Gilley (1st LSC South), Bobby Parsons (HM LSC South), Jordan Kulwitzky and TE Sasan Faradineh.
Returning for the Mustangs are OL starters Amini Silatolu (1st LSC South) and Rickie Gomez (HM LSC South), and part-time starters Bradley Dittmar and Brandon Washington. RBs Lester Bush (2nd LSC South, 589 yards rushing with 9 TDs), Keidrick Jackson (429 yds, 7 TDs), and Chauncey Harris (239 yds, 2 TDs) form a solid running back corps. At WR, David Little (1st LSC South, 63-689 7 TDs), Desmond Ratliff (29-294), Jared Freeman (18-176) and Edgard Theliar (11-246) are the top returning targets. Sheldon Galloway missed 2010, but had 5 catches for 41 yds and a TD in this year's spring game. Brandon Kelsey took over at QB late in the season for an injured Eskridge, and threw for 252 yds, with 3 Ints and 0 TDs and a QB rating of 77.9.

The secondary was hard hit, losing starters Austin McDaniel (2nd LSC South), Ryan Craven, P.J. Grundy and Wesley Nakwaasah, and reserves Patrick Roberts and Lance Moss. That is a combined 228 tackles, 16 for loss, 6 interceptions and 14 passes broken up.
The most experienced area on defense returing is the line. Kevin Birdow, J.D. Corcoran (both HM LSC South), K.K. Francis, and Tyler Tackett combined to start 41 games, while Tim McGill, Brett Olednkamp and Mason Taugavau had the other 7 combined starts. Those seven had a combined 190 tackles, 26 for loss, and 13 sacks. At linebacker, Matt Ellerbrock and Ty Duncan started each game and had 141 tackles between them. Coryan Briggs is the lone starter returning in the secondary, but 8 others had double digit tackles last year, so they do have playing experience.
Special Teams -

NCAA re-draws regional maps - ACU Sports
New Regional Maps
Regional maps for Division II have been redrawn for 2011-12 and again for 2012-13 to accommodate the new Great American Conference.
The Division II Management Council approved the changes at its April 18-19 meeting in Indianapolis. The Division II Championships Committee had recommended the modifications.
Effective in 2011-12, the Great American Conference (composed of institutions in Arkansas and Oklahoma) will be placed in the South Central Region, along with the Lone Star and Heartland Conferences and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. As a new conference, the Great American Conference will be eligible only for at-large selections in 2011-12.
Effective in 2012-13, the Great American and the MIAA will join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the Central Region, and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference will move to the South Central Region with the Heartland and Lone Star Conferences. By 2013-14, the Great American Conference will be eligible for automatic qualification.
“During our deliberations, we considered three models,” said Bill Fusco, chair of the Championships Committee and athletics director at Sonoma State. “We considered a number of factors in totality rather than as stand-alone items. However, at no time did we consider competitive factors, such as the historical or perceived strength of conferences.”
Those factors included:
• Conference membership and location of institutions.
• Number of institutions in each region (to ensure fair access ratios to championships).
• Geographic size of each region.
• Possible future growth of new conferences.
• Maintaining no more than three automatic-qualification conferences per region.
• Transition time for institutions to adjust or begin scheduling institutions in their new regions.
Fusco noted that the realignment will be especially helpful in shortening travel distances in the affected regions.
“In these difficult economic times, we're pleased that these new alignments will actually reduce travel in our two regions in the Midwest,” Fusco said. “We did consider an approach that would have reduced travel even more in those areas, but the model that was accepted did the best job of balancing the number of teams, protecting championship-access ratios and tightening the distance between schools within the regions.”
Division II Management Council chair Rick Cole, athletics director at Dowling, said the process of accommodating the new conference was consistent with previous practice.
“There was ample time for the membership to comment and to offer suggestions and feedback,” Cole said. “Regionalization was discussed at a Convention education session. In short, the approach was similar to the one we have used for the last 5, 10 or 20 years.”
The Championships Committee also added a regionalization principle to clarify that teams in the Atlantic and East Regions will be able to consider games against the University of District of Columbia as in-region contests. District of Columbia will join the East Coast Conference this fall after having been an independent.

Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball coach Tanya Allen announced Lakeshia Craft has signed to become the fourth member of the 2011 recruiting class.
Craft, a 6-1 middle blocker from Pflugerville, TX, is a transfer from Blinn College. She was a two-time first team all-conference and all-Region XIV performer. She was named to the COBRA Magazine All-National Second Team in 2009 after finishing 19th in the nation in attack percentage (.410). She led the Lady Buccaneers to a 2008 NJCAA National Championship and was honored with the Miller Orthopedics “Stop the Damage” Award and named to the all-tournament team. She earned second team all-district honors as a senior at Connally High School.
“Lakeshia (Craft) is an extremely athletic and a skilled volleyball player, but more importantly, she has been involved in great volleyball,” said Allen. “With a national championship at Blinn College under her belt, I know she won't shy away from the tough competition in the Lone Star Conference.”
Craft joins Kalinda Graves, Sarah Fountain and Kelsey Washington in the Javelina recruiting class.
“I have been able to work with Kalinda (Graves) for the last two years, and she has improved tremendously,” said the coach. “She is extremely athletic and will give us some defensive options in the back row.”
“Sarah (Fountain) has an incredible amount of potential,” added Allen. “She is a versatile athlete and is capable of being not only a great setter, but a "go-to" attacker on the right side.”
“Kelsey (Washington) has a great vertical and a very fast arm,” said Allen. “I am excited about the offense that she brings to the table. Her natural athleticism and positive attitude will be extremely beneficial to the program.”
Allen believes that all four players can make an immediate impact upon the Javelina program.

Abilene High's Aguirre signs with ACU baseball - Sam Waller, Abilene Reporter News
Abilene High School senior Gibson Aguirre will continue his baseball career in his hometown after signing a letter of intent Tuesday with Abilene Christian University.
Aguirre, a two-year starter at catcher and three-year letterman, said the Wildcats were a good fit on several levels.
"It's an awesome baseball program and being able to stay home and play in front of my family for four more years is a great privilege," said Aguirre, who also considered Hardin-Simmons, McMurry and Lubbock Christian. "Just being able to have the opportunity to go there and play at home, it was easy there."
The possibility of ACU making a move to NCAA Division I in the future also was an attraction, Aguirre said.
"That's definitely a big plus, that I could be a D-I baseball player by possibly my junior or senior year there," he said.

LSC Scoop Afternoon Update 4-26
Final week of play to determine championship field - LSC Office
The Lone Star Conference softball season is down to one week of play. Four teams - Midwestern State, Southeastern Oklahoma, Angelo State and Incarnate Word - have clinched a spot in the championship set for May 5-6-7 in Durant, Okla. The remaining four berths and seeding are up for grabs with three league games left for all teams except for Central Oklahoma, who has completed their schedule.
LSC softball teams are 407-306-2 overall, with a 214-180-1 record in the South and 193-126-1 in the North this season. The squads are currently 92-42 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 41-40 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
NORTH HITTER
Lisa Ripperger, Northeastern State University, SO, 2B, Jenks, Okla., Jenks HS
Ripperger helped lead Northeastern State to two wins in three outings on the road at Cameron last weekend. The sophomore was 8-for-10 at the plate, and belted two doubles and two home runs with six RBI. She had a 1.600 slugging percentage and on on-base percentage of .818. Ripperger was 3-for-3 with two doubles in a 2-1 loss in the opener, then came back to go 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 in back-to-back games with a homer in each outing, as NSU won, 7-6 and 4-1.
NORTH PITCHER
Rachael Steverson, University of Central Oklahoma, JR, Pitcher, Yukon, Okla., Yukon
Steverson was a dominating force in the circle in pitching UCO to a pair of wins last week as the Bronchos wrapped up the regular season. She allowed just 11 hits and two runs (one earned) in 18 innings, striking out 11 while opponents hit just .180 against her. The junior right-hander pitched a complete-game five-hitter in a 2-1 upset of No. 16-ranked Emporia State and came within a weak infield hit of a perfect game in a 6-0 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma. Steverson needed just 67 pitches in that contest, striking out five, and didn’t allow a base runner until SWOSU’s second batter in the seventh inning reached on an infield single. Steverson then struck out the next two batters to finish off the one-hit shutout.
SOUTH HITTER
Bailey Vrazel, Texas Woman’s University, FR, SS, Danbury, Texas, Danbury
Vrazel helped the Pioneers to 2-1 record in a key three-game series at Texas A&M-Kingsville. TWU is now in a three-way tie for the final conference tournament spot. Vrazel led the team with .563 batting average and .588 on base percentage for the week. She stole eight bases to push her season total to 69. Vrazel is now two from tying and three away from breaking the school and LSC record for stolen bases in a season (71).
SOUTH PITCHER
Briana Sanchez, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, RHP, San Antonio, Texas, Marshall
Sanchez started two games and won both with complete-game performances. In game one at Eastern New Mexico she fanned 10-plus batters (11) for the 12th time this year and is now 10-2 with double-digit strikeouts. In game three against the Zias, she worked five innings allowing only a single hit in the last inning as UIW run-ruled ENMU to improve to 19-9 on the year.

Ripperger helped lead Northeastern State to two wins in three outings on the road at Cameron last weekend. The sophomore was 8-for-10 at the plate, and belted two doubles and two home runs with six RBI. She had a 1.600 slugging percentage and on on-base percentage of .818. Ripperger was 3-for-3 with two doubles in a 2-1 loss in the opener, then came back to go 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 in back-to-back games with a homer in each outing, as NSU won, 7-6 and 4-1.
NORTH PITCHER
Rachael Steverson, University of Central Oklahoma, JR, Pitcher, Yukon, Okla., Yukon
Steverson was a dominating force in the circle in pitching UCO to a pair of wins last week as the Bronchos wrapped up the regular season. She allowed just 11 hits and two runs (one earned) in 18 innings, striking out 11 while opponents hit just .180 against her. The junior right-hander pitched a complete-game five-hitter in a 2-1 upset of No. 16-ranked Emporia State and came within a weak infield hit of a perfect game in a 6-0 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma. Steverson needed just 67 pitches in that contest, striking out five, and didn’t allow a base runner until SWOSU’s second batter in the seventh inning reached on an infield single. Steverson then struck out the next two batters to finish off the one-hit shutout.
SOUTH HITTER
Bailey Vrazel, Texas Woman’s University, FR, SS, Danbury, Texas, Danbury
Vrazel helped the Pioneers to 2-1 record in a key three-game series at Texas A&M-Kingsville. TWU is now in a three-way tie for the final conference tournament spot. Vrazel led the team with .563 batting average and .588 on base percentage for the week. She stole eight bases to push her season total to 69. Vrazel is now two from tying and three away from breaking the school and LSC record for stolen bases in a season (71).
SOUTH PITCHER
Briana Sanchez, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, RHP, San Antonio, Texas, Marshall
Sanchez started two games and won both with complete-game performances. In game one at Eastern New Mexico she fanned 10-plus batters (11) for the 12th time this year and is now 10-2 with double-digit strikeouts. In game three against the Zias, she worked five innings allowing only a single hit in the last inning as UIW run-ruled ENMU to improve to 19-9 on the year.
Signing Day Recap - West Texas A&M
The 2010 season was a good one for West Texas A&M. Ranked nationally all season, and 8-3 regular season record, and a return to the NCAA playoffs. The offense led the LSC in yardage (529 per game, second nationally) and was second in scoring (42 points, third nationally). The defense was 4th in yards allowed (360) and 4th in points allowed (26.2). The biggest negative to the season was the ending - a 55-35 loss in the first round of the playoffs, a game that was more lopsided than the score would indicate.
Offense -
Six starters from last year's offense have moved on. QB Taylor Harris (HM LSC South, 4,806 yds, 38 TDs passing), RB Kelvin Thompson (1st LSC South, 729 yds rushing, 327 yds receiving), WRs Stephen Burton (1st LSC South, 70-1,021 11 TDs), Tyson Williams (1st LSC South, 96-1,321 8 TDs) and OLs Isaiah Lewis and Dan Sherwood (both HM LSC South) were all key components to last year's offense. Returning starters include WRs Brittan Golden (2nd LSC South, 53-893 11 TDs) and Nathan Slaughter (33-341) and OLs Hector Rodriguez (2nd LSC South) and Aaron Mullane. Tanner Marsh and Dustin Vaughn are the frontrunners for the QB spot, and Tommy Hampton is the top returning running back.

Anthony Scott missed virtually all of last year with an injury and his return would be a blessing. The secondary should be really good with Caleb Randolph, Curtis Jefferson (both 1st LSC South), Jordan Smith (2nd LSC South), Maurice Caldwell and Kendrick Geyen all expected back. That quintet had a combined 207 tackles, 8 interceptions and 27 passes broken up.

Dan Sherwood, who was also the team's deep snapper (1st LSC South), punter Tim Cowdrey (33.7 avg on punts), and punt returner Stephen Burton (9.8 punt return avg) will have to be replaced. Signing Day Recap - Texas A&M-Commerce
Last year was disappointing for the Lions. The pre-season pick to win the LSC North stumbled to a 3-8 record. The offense was 13th in the LSC in scoring (19.2 pts) and yardage (293 per game). The defense was much more respectable, finishing 5th in points allowed (27.2) and 8th in yardage (398). On the bright side, three of their losses were by a total of 7 points. On the flip side, two of their wins were by just 6 total points.
Offense -
The good news is that the offense did not lose many players. John Marshall and Brad Autry on the line, WR Julian Hayes (29-493 TD) and QB Adam Farkes (1,960 yards, 5 TDs, 16 Ints) were last year's seniors. Returning are RB's Marcus Graham (2nd LSC North, 815 yards rushing) and London Hamilton (378 yards rushing), WR's Kenzee Jackson (1st LSC North), Taylor Fore, Aaron Wingfield, Tevin Godfrey, and Adam Jones (combined 98 receptions for 1,182 yds). David Sudderth and Ray Argueta are the leading returnees up front.

The defense loses just a few - DL Derrick Hubert, LB Stephen DeGrate, DB's A.J Billings and Leonard Jackson. Most of the line is back, led by Tevin Moore (HM LSC North), Jake Williams, Tramaine Williams and Tristian Davis. Linebacker is in a similar situation, with Danny Mason (1st LSC North), Matt Abram, J.T. Bates and Matt Claggett all expected back. Seven different returning players in the secondary had double digits in tackles last fall - Marlin Terrell, Chez Thomas, Cortney Craig, Michael Cleveland, Joel Wren, Alan Beatty, and Marcus Fore.

Men's Golf: Five teams picked for regional
Five Lone Star Conference men's golf teams were selected for the South Central Regional to be played May 2-4 at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown, Ky., hosted by Northern Kentucky University.
Central Oklahoma, the LSC champions, are the No. 1 seed, while Abilene Christian is seeded second, Cameron fourth, Midwestern State sixth, and Northeastern State 10th.
Also representing the league as an individual is West Texas A&M’s Ben Hargis.
The South Central region is paired with the Midwest Region to form a super regional.
The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Florence, Ala. The finals will be hosted by the University of North Alabama.

Baseball Weekly Release: Five teams clinch spot in the LSC Championship
With the final week of regular season play set for this week, five Lone Star Conference baseball teams - Incarnate Word, Southeastern Oklahoma, Tarleton State, Cameron and Southwestern Oklahoma - have clinched a spot in the LSC Championship set for May 7-10 in Abilene, Texas. Angelo State, West Texas A&M, Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville each have a chance at the sixth and final spot in the postseason tournament.
LSC baseball teams are 293-258 overall this season. Combined the squads are currently 37-17 versus Heartland Conference teams and 5-3 against the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

Arrow Cunningham, University of Central Oklahoma, SR, Catcher, Harrah, Okla., Harrah HS Cunningham sparked UCO to a perfect 3-0 week as the surging Bronchos stretched their winning streak to six in a row. The senior catcher batted .692, going 9-for-13 with one double, one home run and seven RBI. Cunningham started the week with a 2-for-4 night in a 7-3 win over Oklahoma Christian and then went 2-for-4 with four RBI - including a three-run homer - in a 9-3 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle. He finished the week with a perfect 5-for-5, three-RBI outing in a 15-9 LSC win over Northeastern State.
Zane Hensley, Tarleton State University, SR, 1B, Florence, Texas, Florence HS
Hensley led the Texans this past week to four victories with his team-high six hits and six RBI’s to go with a .429 average. The senior first baseman started off the week with a 2-for-3 outing, an RBI and two runs scored against St. Edward’s. In the weekend series with Eastern New Mexico, the Florence native had at least one hit and one RBI in each game. Hensley highlighted the week with a three-run home run in Tarleton’s 7-4 win over the Greyhounds Friday night.
PITCHERS
Heath Wyatt, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, SR, P, Searcy, Ark., Searcy HS
Wyatt continued to dominate in the closer role, finishing off all three of Southeastern’s wins in a sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State. Wyatt tossed a total of 7.0 innings in his three appearances and ran his league-leading saves total to 12 on the year. He allowed just three hits and SWOSU batted just .130 off him. He struck out eight of the 14 batters he faced. His longest outing was 3.2 innings and on the weekend, he allowed just two of the six runners he inherited to score.
Payden Bravenec, Angelo State University, SR, P, Carrollton, Texas, Hebron HS
Bravenec turned in a pair of terrific performances on the mound Saturday. He came out of the bullpen and collected two wins in one day. The senior right-handed pitcher notched a 2.25 ERA after pitching a total of 4.0 innings of relief and allowing just one earned run while scattering four hits and fanning one. In game one of a doubleheader, Bravenec came on in the eighth inning of a tied ball game and retired West Texas A&M in order, allowing the Rams to win the game in the bottom of the frame (9-8). He was called upon again in the nightcap in the fifth inning and limited the Buffs to just one run allowing the Rams to rally and earn their 11th come-from-behind win of the season. On the year, Bravenec is 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA in 19 appearances. He has collected one save and struck out 13.

Baseball Weekly Release: Five teams clinch spot in the LSC Championship
With the final week of regular season play set for this week, five Lone Star Conference baseball teams - Incarnate Word, Southeastern Oklahoma, Tarleton State, Cameron and Southwestern Oklahoma - have clinched a spot in the LSC Championship set for May 7-10 in Abilene, Texas. Angelo State, West Texas A&M, Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville each have a chance at the sixth and final spot in the postseason tournament.
LSC baseball teams are 293-258 overall this season. Combined the squads are currently 37-17 versus Heartland Conference teams and 5-3 against the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

Arrow Cunningham, University of Central Oklahoma, SR, Catcher, Harrah, Okla., Harrah HS Cunningham sparked UCO to a perfect 3-0 week as the surging Bronchos stretched their winning streak to six in a row. The senior catcher batted .692, going 9-for-13 with one double, one home run and seven RBI. Cunningham started the week with a 2-for-4 night in a 7-3 win over Oklahoma Christian and then went 2-for-4 with four RBI - including a three-run homer - in a 9-3 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle. He finished the week with a perfect 5-for-5, three-RBI outing in a 15-9 LSC win over Northeastern State.
Zane Hensley, Tarleton State University, SR, 1B, Florence, Texas, Florence HS
Hensley led the Texans this past week to four victories with his team-high six hits and six RBI’s to go with a .429 average. The senior first baseman started off the week with a 2-for-3 outing, an RBI and two runs scored against St. Edward’s. In the weekend series with Eastern New Mexico, the Florence native had at least one hit and one RBI in each game. Hensley highlighted the week with a three-run home run in Tarleton’s 7-4 win over the Greyhounds Friday night.
PITCHERS
Heath Wyatt, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, SR, P, Searcy, Ark., Searcy HS
Wyatt continued to dominate in the closer role, finishing off all three of Southeastern’s wins in a sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State. Wyatt tossed a total of 7.0 innings in his three appearances and ran his league-leading saves total to 12 on the year. He allowed just three hits and SWOSU batted just .130 off him. He struck out eight of the 14 batters he faced. His longest outing was 3.2 innings and on the weekend, he allowed just two of the six runners he inherited to score.
Payden Bravenec, Angelo State University, SR, P, Carrollton, Texas, Hebron HS
Bravenec turned in a pair of terrific performances on the mound Saturday. He came out of the bullpen and collected two wins in one day. The senior right-handed pitcher notched a 2.25 ERA after pitching a total of 4.0 innings of relief and allowing just one earned run while scattering four hits and fanning one. In game one of a doubleheader, Bravenec came on in the eighth inning of a tied ball game and retired West Texas A&M in order, allowing the Rams to win the game in the bottom of the frame (9-8). He was called upon again in the nightcap in the fifth inning and limited the Buffs to just one run allowing the Rams to rally and earn their 11th come-from-behind win of the season. On the year, Bravenec is 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA in 19 appearances. He has collected one save and struck out 13.

To keep it that way, he decided to cut Saturday’s Green & Silver game at Greyhound Stadium a little short.
The first quarter went 12 minutes as scheduled, but the last three were cut to eight minutes each and the fourth quarter ended when the Silver squad scored with 2:09 left in a 35-26 loss to the Green.
Ribaudo said he simply didn’t want to push it anymore, especially with only about a half-dozen offensive linemen healthy enough to play. And the Hounds lost starting free safety Curtis Jackson to a broken ankle during Friday night’s practice at the stadium.
“We saw a lot of good things, starting off with the kicking game,” Ribaudo said. “I think Taylor (Cannon) averaged around 40 yards on punts, and Michael (Cottingham) busted a (52-yard) field goal and had some great kickoffs.”

Abilene Christian's claimed the men’s and women’s titles as the 2011 Lone Star Conference Tennis Championships concluded Saturday in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The Wildcats won their third straight league crown and 12th overall on the men’s side, while the ACU women picked up their fourth consecutive, ninth since 2000 and 21st overall title.
ACU’s men defeated Cameron, 5-1, while the Wildcat women topped Midwestern State 5-1.

Signing Day Recap - Texas A&M-Kingsville
The Javelinas took another step forward last year, finishing the regular season with a 10-1 record, and losing a heartbreaker to the defending national champions 35-31 in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. The defense led the way, allowing just 16 points and 252 yards per game (compared to 27.6 points and 359 yards in 2009). The offense, though not spectacular, was efficient, averaging 28.2 points and 395 yards weekly, and controlled the clock with an LSC best 34:25 time of possession.
Offense -
The Javelinas will have to replace three starters on the line, Trent Perkins, Colby Lowrie (both 2nd team LSC South) and Tim Byerly (HM LSC South). A fourth starter gone is the schools all-time receptions leader, Ryan Lincoln (3-time 2nd LSC South). Two other seniors from last year were lost during the season - WR Delashaun Dean and RB Fred Winborn - and reserve RB Connell Davis will be missed as well.
Returning in 2010 are QB Nate Poppell (2,671 yards and 16 TDs), RB Jonathan Woodson (2nd LSC South, expected to move back to WR), WRs Robert Armstrong, Sherman Batiste (both HM LSC South) and Christian Taylor. Up frount, starters Cory Baumann and Keenan Woods are back, as well as reserves Daniel Sharpe and Chris Hudgins.

DT Dondi Cooks (HM LSC South), DE Michael Talamantez, LB Tressor Baptiste (1st LSC South), safeties DeIra Glover and Corey Robertson (both 1st LSC South), CB Kendrick Matthews (2nd LSC South), rover Mardrick Johnson, and CB Josh Luck. That is 370 tackles, 31 TFL, 6 Ints and 29 passes broken up. Matt Romig, who started the season on fire at DE, was sidelined midseason and his football future is unclear.
Returning are starter NT Johnny Tivao (1st LSC South), DE Roderick Benman, LB Marcus Sanders (2nd LSC South), and CB Derrick Thomas (2nd LSC South). Key returning reserves are DL Darnell Hicks, DBs Dustin Appling, Robert McCormick and Marc Kinney, who was injured in the second week of the season and missed the remaining ten games.

Signing Day Recap - Abilene Christian
Abilene Christian has their work cut out for them if they are to top their 2010 season. The Wildcats led the LSC in scoring (43.3 pts per game) and were second in scoring defense (21.5 pts). They tore through the regular season undefeated winning tight ball games over Texas A&M-Kingsville, Midwestern State and West Texas A&M - a testament to a veteran, senior-laden squad.
Offense -
Let's start with who's coming back. Harlon Hill finalist Mitchell Gale returns for his junior season. Last year, he threw for 3,595 yards and 38 TDs with just 3 Ints. The running back position should be deep, led by Daryl Richardson (HM LSC South), Josh Morgan, and Reggie Brown (returning from injury). Taylor Gabriel is the leading returner at WR, but Darrell Cantu-Harkless (HM LSC South) is expected to shift over from running back as well. FB Justin Andrews (1st LSC South in 2009) and TE Ben Gibbs (1st LSC South)are back as blockers/receivers. Up front, Matt Webber (1st LSC South), Neal Tivis (2nd LSC South)and Josh Perez (HM LSC South)form a solid nucleus.
Gone are OL Trevis Turner, OL Royland Tubbs, FB Emery Dudensing, WR Edmund Gates (all 1st LSC South) and WR Kendrick Johnson (2nd LSC South). Others that have moved on are Clark Harrell at QB, and WRs Raymond Radway, Chris Fowler and Harold Jackson. That group combined for ten 1st team, three 2nd team, and three HM LSC South selections through their careers. The WRs and Dudensing had 176 receptions for 2,486 yards and 28 TDs.
Defense -
With the defense, we'll start with last year's seniors. Up front, Fred Thompson, Marvin Jones (both 1st LSC South), Bryson Lewis (HM LSC South), Austin January and Mike Jones will be missed. Linebackers Kevin Washington, Courtney Lane (both 1st LSC South), Eric Edwards (HM LSC South) and reserve Case Carr won't be back. The secondary loses one starter, James Williams (2nd LSC South). All together, they will be missing 5 of the top 7 on the team in tackles, a combined 361 tackles, 54 TFLs, 15 sacks, 3 interceptions and 16 passes broken up.
Leading the returnees is three time 1st LSC South selection Aston Whiteside at defensive end. Donald Moore and Ryan Smith got a lot of playing time on the line as well. In the secondary, Darrien Williams (2nd LSC South), L.B. Suggs, Richard Havins (both HM LSC South) and Drew Cuffee are returning starters. Other players with significant experience are Nate Bailey, Nathan Baggs and David LaMour.
Special Teams -
Mark Sprage (two time 2nd LSC South) was a senior last year. He averaged 40.4 yds per punt. Also gone is Kendrick Johnson (2nd LSC South), who was second in punt returns, averaging 14 yards. Taylor Gabriel is the leading returner at WR, but Darrell Cantu-Harkless (HM LSC South) is expected to shift over from running back as well. FB Justin Andrews (1st LSC South in 2009) and TE Ben Gibbs (1st LSC South)are back as blockers/receivers. Up front, Matt Webber (1st LSC South), Neal Tivis (2nd LSC South)and Josh Perez (HM LSC South)form a solid nucleus.
Gone are OL Trevis Turner, OL Royland Tubbs, FB Emery Dudensing, WR Edmund Gates (all 1st LSC South) and WR Kendrick Johnson (2nd LSC South). Others that have moved on are Clark Harrell at QB, and WRs Raymond Radway, Chris Fowler and Harold Jackson. That group combined for ten 1st team, three 2nd team, and three HM LSC South selections through their careers. The WRs and Dudensing had 176 receptions for 2,486 yards and 28 TDs.
Defense -
With the defense, we'll start with last year's seniors. Up front, Fred Thompson, Marvin Jones (both 1st LSC South), Bryson Lewis (HM LSC South), Austin January and Mike Jones will be missed. Linebackers Kevin Washington, Courtney Lane (both 1st LSC South), Eric Edwards (HM LSC South) and reserve Case Carr won't be back. The secondary loses one starter, James Williams (2nd LSC South). All together, they will be missing 5 of the top 7 on the team in tackles, a combined 361 tackles, 54 TFLs, 15 sacks, 3 interceptions and 16 passes broken up.
Leading the returnees is three time 1st LSC South selection Aston Whiteside at defensive end. Donald Moore and Ryan Smith got a lot of playing time on the line as well. In the secondary, Darrien Williams (2nd LSC South), L.B. Suggs, Richard Havins (both HM LSC South) and Drew Cuffee are returning starters. Other players with significant experience are Nate Bailey, Nathan Baggs and David LaMour.

Mark Sprage (two time 2nd LSC South) was a senior last year. He averaged 40.4 yds per punt. Also gone is Kendrick Johnson (2nd LSC South), who was second in punt returns, averaging 14 yards. Last Sunday, the Angelo State University football team and first-year head coach Will Wagner concluded a month's worth of spring practices with their annual spring game at San Angelo Stadium.
It was the culmination of 15 practices for Wagner and his new team that began with some simple goals that the new coach wanted to achieve.
"We really wanted to get a good idea of what our kids could do once they put the pads on and see some guys compete, not knowing a lot about them," Wagner said. "From the get-go, we had to form our own opinions of the kids. We wanted to see what they could do and where they would fit in our scheme."
One of the biggest things Wagner noticed as the practices went on was the tempo from the offense.
"The one thing that I noticed was the tempo on the offensive side picked up as they started learning the offense, and on the defensive side we started pursuing a lot better and having all 11 guys running after the ball," Wagner said.

Men’s Golf Championships: UCO wins title - LSC Office
Central Oklahoma shot nine-under-par 279 in Wednesday’s final round to claim the 2011 Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championship. The annual league event, which features 11 men's teams, is being held at Randolph Oaks Golf Course in San Antonio.
UCO, who led all 54 holes, won its fourth LSC crown and first since 2003 with a five-under-par 859 (284-296-279). Colby Shrum led the Broncho effort at four-under 68 to claim individual medalist honors at nine-under-par 207 (67-72-68). The senior also won the LSC title in 2009.
It was three-person race for individual medalist honors between Shrum, West Texas A&M’s Ben Hargis and Northeastern State’s Casey Nelson. Shrum finished with a par on No. 18 avoiding a play-off with Hargis and Nelson who each finished a stroke back at 208 (-8).
The men’s all-tournament team included Shrum, Hargis, Nelson, Abilene Christian’s Alex Carpenter, UCO’s Andrew Green and Cameron’s Brady Porter.
Cameron finished second with a four-over 868, while ACU was third at six-over 870.

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University athletic director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced the addition of Lindsey Wilson to the athletic staff as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program. Wilson brings impressive credentials to the position, having served as the assistant coach at NCAA Division I University of Texas-Arlington since the summer of 2006. Her father is the legendary Rick Wilson, winner of six state championships, at Weatherford High School, in Oklahoma.
Wilson will be introduced in a press conference at Greyhound Arena, next Wednesday. The conference is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. MST.
“I am so excited about the opportunity to coach at Eastern New Mexico University,” said Wilson. “I want to thank (ENMU President) Dr. Gamble and Dr. Geiser for giving me this chance. I am looking to start winning in the Lone Star Conference and moving the program in a positive direction.”
Wilson succeeds Linden Weese, the coach of the Zia program since the 2006-07 season and becomes the seventh head coach in the program debuted for the 1974 season.
“Coach Wilson is a perfect fit for Eastern,” said Geiser. She played collegiately in the Lone Star, has coached and recruited in our geographic footprint at UTA. She is bright, articulate, extremely organized and brings with her a contagious enthusiasm for women’s basketball.”
In her five seasons at UTA, she helped guide the Mavericks to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, after posting a perfect 17-0 record in the Southland Conference and winning the SLC Tournament title. In 2008, Texas-Arlington qualified for the Women’s National Invitational Tournament. During her stint, she assisted with in-game decisions, scouting and overall administration of the program.
No stranger the Lone Star Conference, Wilson played collegiately at two LSC schools. After spending her freshman season at Southeastern Oklahoma State, she played for three seasons at Central Oklahoma. A true leader, Wilson was chosen as team captain as a senior and charged with organizing team functions and volunteer activities.

LSC Women's Golf Championship
Tarleton State led from start to finish to claim its fourth straight and fifth overall Lone Star Conference Women’s Golf Championships title. The annual league event, which features 12 women's teams, is being held at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio.
The TexAnns (287-287-292=866) posted an eight-over par 292 during the final round led by senior Carla Cooper (68-72-70=210), who was the individual medalist for the first time in her memorable career.
Cooper and teammates Jacqueline Lau and Sharon Lau, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Chantry McMahan, Northeastern State’s Whitney McAteer and Incarnate Word’s Joanna De Sa Peirera earned all-tournament honors by virtue of placing in the top five.
Midwestern State finished second with the low round of 289 on Wednesday for a team total of 895. UIW was third (897) followed by NSU (905) and Central Oklahoma (916).
Signing Day Recap - Angelo State
The Rams finished the 2010 season with a 5-5 record, but were just 3-5 against the teams that will comprise the LSC going forward. The offense scored 34.5 points per game (an improvement of almost 6 points) and gained 421 yards weekly (22 yards better than 2009). The defense gave most of that improvement back however, allowing 30.3 points per game (4.7 more than 2009) and 388 yards (25 more per game than 2009).
Offense -
The losses on the offense aren't numerous, but they will not be easy to replace. QB Josh Neiswander leaves ASU as the school's all-time leading passer (8,212 yards, 61 TDs). His favorite target the past two seasons, V'Keon Lacey (127 receptions, 1,447 yds, and 15 TDs) is also gone. Not to be overlooked, FB John Norcott (2nd LSC South) has also moved on.
The cupboard is not bare, however. Leading rusher Tristan Carter (603 yds, 5 TDs rushing, 193 yds, 6 TDs receiving) and backup Nevin Gardiner are both back. Dekarai Pecikonis (2nd LSC South) is on pace to own just about every career receiving record on the ASU books. CJ Akins, Zach McCormick and Excelle Osborne will need to step up their games to keep teams from concentration on him, though. Up front, TEs Nate Bayless (2nd LSC South) and Bradan Ritchey, and OL Austin Sumrall (2nd LSC South), Andrew Krutsinger, Ryan Merriman, and Keefer Preece all return. We have not heard anything on Conner Cook, who is not on the spring roster.

Q&A - Dominick Maddox
Q. Why are you interested in playing in the LSC?
Dominick Maddox - It’s always been big for me to stay close to home while I was playing in college. It’s just the simple fact of playing in front of family and friends. Also it's the conference I know the most about.
Q. What do you bring to the table?
DM - I'm one of the players who loves the game in and out. So I play with a lot of emotion and energy, basically I play loud. Majority of the time on all the teams I have been a part of, feed off that energy. I've been told that I talk too much but I use my talking as a technique. I want to beat you up mentally while I'm beating you up physically, it’s how I have always played and I doubt it will ever stop, it’s natural for me.
Q. Where do you envision your best spot on the field?
DM - Anywhere in the secondary, but preferably safety, ideally it’s the one thats making the adjustments. I love special teams so everything besides field goal. I really would want someone to give me a opportunity to return also.
Q. Have you spoken with any schools yet? Do you have a favorite?
DM - None. My favorites are ACU, West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville because of the recent players they have put out in the league.
Q. Was it difficult not suiting up on Saturdays last year?
DM - It was killing me watching everybody else play especially my close high school teammates.
Q. How about after college? What plans to do have?
DM - Of course I want to go to the NFL but if that doesn’t work, start my on Chicken Spot on the Northeast Side of San Antonio. It's hard to be successful in America without a degree. Your body will give out before your mind will.
Closing thougths - I am 5”10, run a 4.41, and have 3 years in experience in College Football. I’m hungry - whoever is gives me a chance will get a player that is ready to go and contribute from day one.

Gerlich interviews with UNM - Ricky Treon, Amarillo Globe News
West Texas A&M head women's basketball coach Krista Gerlich has interviewed for the same position at the University of New Mexico, WT athletic director Michael McBroom said Tuesday.
McBroom said officials from New Mexico contacted him late last week for permission to speak with Gerlich. He granted the request, and Gerlich interviewed in Albuquerque over the weekend.
"She is a finalist for the job - as she should be," McBroom said. "She is, in my mind, one of the best basketball coaches in the country.
"The opportunity to interview is well deserved."
Gerlich didn't return several messages left on her mobile phone Tuesday.

LSC Men’s Golf Championships: UCO holds off ACU, CU charge - LSC Office
Central Oklahoma saw its 12-stroke lead trimmed to two as Abilene Christian and Cameron put together the low rounds of the day during Monday’s second round at the Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The annual league event, which features 11 men's teams, is being held at Randolph Oaks Golf Course in San Antonio.
The Bronchos stayed in first place at four-over-par (284-296=580) but the Wildcats and Aggies were both under-par to close the distance with 18 holes of play remaining on Wednesday.
ACU was two-under-par (296-286=582) with three Wildcats finishing at even par or better, led by Cyril Bouniol with a three-under 18 holes and Alex Carpenter and Tyler Sheppard at even-par.
CU posted a four-under effort (303-284=587) with a trio turning in under-par efforts: Brady Porter (-3), Jason Timmis (-2) and Trey Lawson (-2).
Northeastern State’s Casey Nelson holds a one-shot advantage over West Texas A&M’s Ben Hargis and UCO’s Colby Shrum in the individual race. Nelson is at six-under-par (68-70=138) with Hargis and Shrum at 139.
Texas A&M-Commerce (597) is in fourth place followed by Southwestern Oklahoma (601).

Sharon Lau paced the TexAnn performance with a three-under-par effort to finish at 68 today and move up from 10th to tied for 2nd place overall at 142. Carla Cooper stayed in the lead at 140 with a one-over round today. The rounds of 68 by Cooper on Monday and Sharon Lau matched the lowest round score in LSC Championship play.
UIW’s Jessica Cornish is stayed in second (142) following a two-over 18 holes.

Cami Correa, East Central University, JR, Catcher/Designated Player, Brawley, California, Brawley Union HS
Correa batted .667 (4-for-6) with two homers and six runs batted in as ECU won two of three games at Northeastern State. Correa finished with an .818 on-base percentage after drawing five walks in the series. She also had a 1.667 slugging percentage thanks to her two home runs. She was 2-for-3 with a game-winning three-run blast in the top of the seventh of a 6-3 Lady Tiger victory over the RiverHawks. Correa ended up with four RBIs in that contest. In a 5-1 victory, she was 1-for-1 with a two-run shot in the seventh for ECU’s fourth and fifth runs. For the season, Correa has a .349 batting average with six homers and 25 RBIs (second on the squad).
NORTH PITCHER

Henderson led the #23 Lady Buffs to a huge weekend series win over the #7 Rambelles at Lady Buff Yard in Canyon. She hit .600 with three RBI and three runs scored for a on-base percentage of .636. Henderson continued to be a threat on the basepaths, stealing one base on the weekend to remain perfect on the year, 40-for-40.
Arianna Rodriguez, Tarleton State University, SO, SS, Bruceville Eddy, Bruceville Eddy HS
Rodriguez was one of two TexAnns to score in every game last week as the TexAnns swept Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference South Division series after dropping a doubleheader against St. Mary’s. Rodriguez batted .526 on the week, going 10-of-19 with nine runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and five runs batted in. She had a total of 18 bases with a .947 slugging percentage. She had a two-run home run in the top of the third in the second game on Friday against the Zias before tagging a ball over the right center fence in Saturday’s game to score two more runs. She scored three times in the third game of the series to help the TexAnns.

West Texas A&M head women's basketball coach Krista Gerlich has interviewed for the same position at the University of New Mexico, WT athletic director Michael McBroom said Tuesday.
McBroom said officials from New Mexico contacted him late last week for permission to speak with Gerlich. He granted the request, and Gerlich interviewed in Albuquerque over the weekend.
"She is a finalist for the job - as she should be," McBroom said. "She is, in my mind, one of the best basketball coaches in the country.
"The opportunity to interview is well deserved."
Gerlich didn't return several messages left on her mobile phone Tuesday.

LSC Men’s Golf Championships: UCO holds off ACU, CU charge - LSC Office
Central Oklahoma saw its 12-stroke lead trimmed to two as Abilene Christian and Cameron put together the low rounds of the day during Monday’s second round at the Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The annual league event, which features 11 men's teams, is being held at Randolph Oaks Golf Course in San Antonio.
The Bronchos stayed in first place at four-over-par (284-296=580) but the Wildcats and Aggies were both under-par to close the distance with 18 holes of play remaining on Wednesday.
ACU was two-under-par (296-286=582) with three Wildcats finishing at even par or better, led by Cyril Bouniol with a three-under 18 holes and Alex Carpenter and Tyler Sheppard at even-par.
CU posted a four-under effort (303-284=587) with a trio turning in under-par efforts: Brady Porter (-3), Jason Timmis (-2) and Trey Lawson (-2).
Northeastern State’s Casey Nelson holds a one-shot advantage over West Texas A&M’s Ben Hargis and UCO’s Colby Shrum in the individual race. Nelson is at six-under-par (68-70=138) with Hargis and Shrum at 139.
Texas A&M-Commerce (597) is in fourth place followed by Southwestern Oklahoma (601).

LSC Women's Golf Championship: Tarleton maintains lead heading into final round - LSC Office
Tarleton State improved their lead with a six-over par 287 tally for the second straight day. The TexAnns hold a 20-shot lead after two rounds at the Lone Star Conference Women’s Golf Championships.
The annual league event, which features 12 women's teams, is being held at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio.
Tarleton (287-287=574) is followed by Incarnate Word (594), Northeastern State (605), Midwestern State (606) and Central Oklahoma (613).
Sharon Lau paced the TexAnn performance with a three-under-par effort to finish at 68 today and move up from 10th to tied for 2nd place overall at 142. Carla Cooper stayed in the lead at 140 with a one-over round today. The rounds of 68 by Cooper on Monday and Sharon Lau matched the lowest round score in LSC Championship play.
UIW’s Jessica Cornish is stayed in second (142) following a two-over 18 holes.

NORTH HITTER
Cami Correa, East Central University, JR, Catcher/Designated Player, Brawley, California, Brawley Union HS
Correa batted .667 (4-for-6) with two homers and six runs batted in as ECU won two of three games at Northeastern State. Correa finished with an .818 on-base percentage after drawing five walks in the series. She also had a 1.667 slugging percentage thanks to her two home runs. She was 2-for-3 with a game-winning three-run blast in the top of the seventh of a 6-3 Lady Tiger victory over the RiverHawks. Correa ended up with four RBIs in that contest. In a 5-1 victory, she was 1-for-1 with a two-run shot in the seventh for ECU’s fourth and fifth runs. For the season, Correa has a .349 batting average with six homers and 25 RBIs (second on the squad).
NORTH PITCHER

Rhudy turned in the most dominant weekend of her career in a series sweep of Cameron. She picked up all three wins after tossing 14.0 innings and posting a 0.50 ERA.
