Sooners still looking for a coach - John Shinn, Norman Transcript
NORMAN — Another day came and went without Oklahoma hiring a new basketball coach. But there were several developments Thursday.

First, as the Transcript reported Wednesday, Illinois coach Bruce Weber confirmed he did have discussions with OU about the job, but would not go into detail about how serious the talks have been.

“I received a few interest calls regarding other positions, but nothing beyond that. I remain committed to the University of Illinois,” Weber said in the statement released by the school.

If Weber is desperate to get the job, he isn’t saying anything that would indicate that publicly.

“I am fortunate to have one of the elite jobs in all of college basketball and am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our program,” he said. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that Illinois is competing at a championship level both in the Big Ten and nationally.”

Another candidate who has emerged is Central Oklahoma coach and former Sooner player Terry Evans. Sources close to the search confirmed Evans did interview with OU athletic director Joe Castiglione Tuesday.

Evans, who played at OU from 1989-93 and remains among the program’s all-time leaders in 3-pointers and assists, is considered a long shot. All of his head coaching experience is at the NCAA Division II or high-school level. The only time he spent coaching in Division I was as OU’s director of basketball operations on former Sooner coach Kelvin Sampson’s staff in 2000-01. That team did reach the Final Four.

Evans left to become head coach at Midwest City High School the following season. He just finished his 10th year at UCO.

Terry Evans wants the Oklahoma basketball job. And he makes an interesting defense for detractors who say the Sooners shouldn’t hire a coach from the University of Central Oklahoma.

“Some people see me as a Division II coach,” Evans said. Others “see me as we’ve got one of the top 100, top 120 programs in college basketball. It depends on how you see my situation.”

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione interviewed Evans earlier this week. Evans declined to comment on the interview, but though the ninth-year UCO coach remains a long shot for the job, he’s rising up the list as other coaches fall off the OU radar.

My first question at Midwestern State's news conference this week drew a few chuckles.

Athletic Director Charlie Carr was discussing how he was going to go about hiring a replacement for Grant McCasland when I butted in and asked:

"You have two guys right here. Can't you just announce them right now and get all this out of the way?"

I wasn't looking for laughs.

I think the best thing MSU can do right now is promote Nelson Haggerty to head basketball coach and make Tres Segler his top assistant.

Of course that's coming from a guy who doesn't know a pick-and-roll from a cinnamon roll.

So I will let a real basketball guy give you his opinion.

"On behalf of the players, we want nothing more than to have Coach Hag and Coach Segler stay here. They mean a lot to us," said guard Chris Hagan, who helped lead MSU to back-to-back Elite Eights in his two years at the school.

"They had as big a part in our successes as Coach Mac did. It is hard to see it from the outside looking in, but being with them every day, you see the amount of work they put in. We know nobody else in the world is more deserving of this job than them. We hope that's what happens, but I trust Mr. Carr to make the right decision."
