UIW Spring Football

END IN SIGHT FOR SPRING FOOTBALL

The final days are at hand for Incarnate Word’s spring football schedule and the annual Red and Black Game is upcoming.

Coach Mike Santiago said his Cardinals will have a 3:15 p.m. session on Monday, April 11, followed by another at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12. Then comes the traditional mid-week off-day on Wednesday, April 13.

The spring game will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. No admission will be charged and all Cardinals and football fans alike are welcome.

As for the game’s format, that will be determined in the closing days of regular drills at Benson Stadium. Santiago has said that depending on how the practices go, particularly in the healthy bodies department, the game could be two complete teams going at each other or the session might be offense against defense, or even some other combination.

No matter how the sides line up on that Thursday, the UIW coaching staff has had a good look at the Cardinals over the past three-plus weeks.

Heading into their third season of action the Cardinals are growing up.

Having been at a continual disadvantage the last two years by playing almost all freshmen, then almost all sophomores, Incarnate Word looks ahead to 2011 when the bulk of the squad will be upperclassmen—primarily juniors. This means the experience quotient is at another level plus there is more muscle after another off-season in the weight room.

Looking at the fall of 2011 when UIW will play its second season in the ever-tough Lone Star Conference, the Cardinals open on September 3 by hosting East Central Oklahoma at Benson Stadium. The 10-game slate includes eight conference games and Incarnate Word’s first-ever foray into Division I play. On September 17 the Cardinals travel to Beaumont to play at Lamar University, a member of the D-I Southland Conference.
