JoAnne Jones reached a scoring milestone and Tarleton State (15-2, 2-0) survived a scare in its first time to take the court as a nationally-ranked team in NCAA Division II.

Jones was scoreless thanks to foul trouble and the TexAnns looked listless at halftime when they trailed Eastern New Mexico (5-13, 0-3) 21-16.

But Tarleton, ranked No. 24 by the USA Today/ESPN Division II coaches poll, scored the first 10 points of the second half and never trailed again in a 55-43 win in a Lone Star Conference South Division contest at Wisdom Gym.

As for Jones, she scored nine points in the first eight minutes of the second, then hit a basket with 4:41 remaining to give her the 11 points she needed to reach 1,000 for her career. She is the 19th TexAnn to reach that mark in school history, earning a standing ovation.

Jones also grabbed four rebounds, moving into 10th all time at Tarleton with 568.
The milestone basket by Jones made it 48-35, giving Tarleton its largest lead of the night to that point.

Tarleton went cold after that and didn’t score again until Morgan Stehling knocked down a pair of free throws at the 2:43 mark. The charity shots made it 50-41 after the Zias had used a 6-0 push to get back in the game.

Tarleton stretched the lead back out to 54-41 and finally earned its biggest lead of the contest when Shelby Adamson hit a pair from the stripe to make it 56-41 with 40 seconds left.

Stehling led the TexAnns with 15 points and also had five rebounds. Jones finished with the 11 she needed and Adamson had 10 to go with seven boards. Brittnie Haley had eight points and nine rebounds while Sundberg tallied six points and three assists.

Tarleton shot 37 percent from the floor while holding ENMU to just 29.5 percent. The TexAnns converted 24 ENMU giveaways into 17 points.

The TexAnns struggled early on, leading for only a brief spell in the first half when an 8-0 run made it 10-6.

ENMU jumped right back on top, however, using a 13-3 surge to lead 19-13.

Defense paves the way for Texans

Tarleton State (14-3, 2-0) held a Lone Star Conference opponent to under 40 points in a game for the first time in almost 13 years Wednesday night, blowing away Eastern New Mexico (7-10, 2-1) 76-36 in an LSC South battle at Wisdom Gym.

Tarleton defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 60-39 on Feb. 22, 1997 and had surrendered 40 or more points to every LSC team it faced since that time.

But the Texans, who entered the contest second in the nation in field goal percentage defense, were on point defensively Wednesday night, holding the Greyhounds to just 32.6 percent from the floor including only 16.7 percent from the arc.

"We work extremely hard defensively," Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman said. "We were first in the nation in field goal percentage defense (in 2002-03). This is as close as we've come since then to having a defense like we had with that team."

Tarleton out-rebounded ENMU 40-22 and had seven fewer turnovers than the Hounds, resulting in 15 more shot attempts. That, teamed with the Texans' 44.8 percent shooting performance that included 11 three-point bombs led to their second 40-point home win over the Greyhounds in three years. Tarleton defeated Eastern 84-44 in 2008.

Effran Bryant knocked down three shots from outside the arc and led all scorers with 13 points. Darrion Washington, who also hit three treys, tallied 11.

"Darrion is one of the most improved players in our program and we expect that with him having gone from a freshman to a sophomore," Reisman said. "He's a warrior. He dives on the floor, takes charges and gets through screens. He loves the physicality of the game."

Three other Texans also reached double figures as Devon Hills, Corin Henry and Jeremiah Wilson added 10 each. Wilson collected 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double.

"Jeremiah is playing hard and he's playing smart. He's playing good team basketball," Reisman said. "Him and Wale (Ogunoye) and Dante (Smith) have to keep banging the boards like they did tonight for us to be successful."

Henry collected six assists and Bryant had four. Dante Smith had seven points and nine boards, while Wale Ogunoye also scored seven and Chris Harrell had six - giving the Texans eight players with at least six points.

The Texans, who have won nine of their last 10, outscored ENMU 24-6 off turnovers, 18-7 in second-chance points and 26-13 off the bench.

The game was close for the first 13 minutes before Tarleton exploded, going on an extended 31-3 run that made it 52-20 with 15:24 remaining.

The run began with the Texans scoring 17 of the final 19 first half points. They opened the second half by scoring the first nine points and 14 of the first 16.

The lead finally grew to more than 40 when Wilson capped his double-double with a pair of free throws that made it 74-33 with three minutes left.

Tarleton, which won its fifth straight against Eastern New Mexico, is alone in first place in the LSC South. The Texans are half a game ahead of West Texas A&M (2-1) and Eastern and one game clear of Midwestern State (1-1). Tarleton visits WTAMU at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Along with first place being on the line at WT, there is also a milestone within reach for Reisman, who is in his 22nd year at Tarleton. Already the winningest coach in school history, his next victory will No. 450 with the Texans.

------------------------------------------
True to the concept of signing day in college football, player commitments to Incarnate Word’s program began rolling in shortly after the opening bell on Wednesday (February 4).

Cardinals Coach Mike Santiago and his staff were waiting by the fax machine to receive the national letters of intent and within minutes some of their anxiety began to abate when the machine delivered Rashaad Patterson’s paperwork. He is a linebacker out of Katy Morton Ranch in the Greater Houston area.

Patterson and 26 others make up UIW’s Signing Class of 2009.

According to NCAA rules, football recruits can verbally commit to a school earlier than the first Wednesday of February, in this case the 4th, but 7 a.m. on this day is the first time they can sign and deliver the official documents.

The Class of 2009 joins Incarnate Word’s inaugural Class of 2008 which produced more than 30 athletes who were on campus going through fall drills as redshirts. The Cardinals will take the field for the first time ever on August 29 to begin an independent schedule as part of the NCAA ‘s Division II. In the fall of 2010 UIW will join the Lone Star Conference.

“A year ago,” Santiago said, “we had to sign players at all positions. We had to do some of the same this year but we also were able to concentrate somewhat on specifics, like the offensive line and wide receiver.

“This year’s goal was to sign players who are better than those on campus already. Our measuring stick was for these guys to be as good or better than the current players. And I tell our current players that is the goal. That gives them the challenge to stay ahead of our recruits. Of course we won’t know until we take the field in the fall. A big factor in our recruiting this time was this group will not have the luxury of redshirting. They are going to have to come in and play immediately.”

The coaching staff has put together a group of players who will draw fan interest in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Ten of the 28 are from San Antonio schools. Another seven are from schools nearby the city or in South Texas.

“We have a smart group,” Santiago said. “The cumulative grade point average of these guys is 3.54 while their cumulative SAT scores are 1,060. Because of the types of players we were searching for we found ourselves in recruiting battles that we didn’t have a year ago.

“I just hope these guy’s times in the 40 are as good as their GPAs.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coming on the heels of another 11-win, record-breaking season, West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel and his staff today announced its 2009 high school recruiting class. The 2009 recruiting class consists of 78 student-athletes who will join the program in the fall and help to make the Buffs a force on the Division II football scene for years to come.
“There was a tremendous amount of talent in Texas this year,” said Coach Carthel. “We feel very fortunate to have landed the amount of strong talent that we have. We will probably redshirt a large number of these young men, but the future is bright.
“With the style offense we employ, we are an attractive program to skill players,” Carthel added. “We signed several tall, fast receivers. Our quarterbacks are all athletic and can run. And, our incoming running backs may be the best we’ve seen. The running back position may just be the strongest position in this class. “Defensively, we had some holes to fill in our secondary from a year ago, and we feel like we’ve rung the bell with this class. We also signed some outstanding individual talent at both the defensive line and linebacker positions; guys who can run to the football and play with a lot of passion."
Broken down by position, the Buffaloes signed nine offensive linemen, seven quarterbacks, five running backs and 20 receivers. Defensively, they signed seven defensive linemen, 13 linebackers and 16 defensive backs, plus one kicker.

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton head football coach Sam McElroy has announced the 2009 recruiting class that consists of 26 future student-athletes who signed national letters-of-intent on Wednesday – the NCAA’s national signing day.

“This is a really talented group of athletes,” said the Texan head football coach. “This is probably the most athletic group we have signed since I have been here. We have a lot of speed and a lot of talented skill players.”

The list of all-district players is long, and the Texans have signed seven all-state players, four district most valuable players and the UIL 2A Defensive Player of the Year.

“We have four players who played on state championship teams this year and several who have received all-district and all-state honors,” McElroy said. “The list includes good size on the offensive line and more defensive guys than offensive guys, but that is what we recruited more this year. These guys can really run and we believe we filled the holes we felt we needed to address.”

McElroy believes this class will contribute to the program for years to come.

“I am not going to say that none of these kids will end up helping us in the fall because there are usually a handful that will,” McElroy said. “But we want the majority of this class to come in and have a year to get ready to contribute to the program in major ways in the future. We want them to come in here and grow without pressing them into a major role as a true freshman. We feel this class will help us continue the winning tradition to which this program has grown accustomed.”

The Texans, who finished the 2008 season 8-3 overall and just missing the NCAA playoffs, will open the spring football schedule on Monday, Feb. 23. The team will host the annual Purple/White Spring Scrimmage on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. before hosting the Bobby Fox Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 28.

------------------------------------------------------------
ADA – Considering limited recruiting time, East Central University head football coach Tim McCarty is certainly excited about his 2009 recruiting class.
“We addressed some issues on our roster with the emphasis being on speed, particularly at the skilled positions,” said McCarty, who is entering his second stint as the Tiger head coach this fall.
Among the 22-man, all-freshmen list are seven players out of Muskogee High School. In fact, McCarty and his staff signed 15 players out of the state of Oklahoma and seven more from Texas.
“We wanted to emphasize high school players. We want to build a championship football team and we want to build that foundation with freshmen,” McCarty said.
Speed will be the primary weapon to add to that building process, according to McCarty.
“From a defensive standpoint, we need to be able to run to the ball and make tackles for minimum or no gain, lock up a receiver and run downfield,” said McCarty. “From an offensive standpoint, we need to hit a crease in the line, burst through the line of scrimmage and be able to score in the open field. On special teams, we need to cover down field and be in position to make the tackle while the ball is in the air. I think we will be able to accomplish these things with this recruiting class.”
Among the signees were three players who earned their district’s top awards, including linebackers Erik Howell, of Muskogee, and Amos Cherry, of Coweta, along with the athletic Phillip Pawelek, out of Pleasanton High School (Texas). Also, Tyler McGrew, out of Bixby High School, was the district’s top receiver.
“We’re in this for the long haul and need a great foundation. The players that we recruited will buy into this,” McCarty said. “I’m very pleased with the high quality of athletes we got. They bring toughness and athletic ability which will make our roster better.”
Here are brief sketches of each ECU signee:
