Dean Brantley, a 6-2, 180-pound quarterback from Missouri City, Texas played for Elkins High School. He went 127-for-184 passing for 2,072 yards and 19 touchdowns. He set a school record for most touchdown passes in a season (19) and in a game (4). He was named District 23-5A First Team quarterback as a senior. He was an honor roll student this past year and is an excellent high hurdle sprinter in track. He is the son of Dennis and Carmen Brantley and plans to study Kinesiology. Erik Nino, a 6-2, 175-pound quarterback from Edcouch, Texas played for Edcouch-Elsa High School. He led E-E HS to four straight playoff appearances and four district championships. He was named the All-Valley Most Valuable Player and First Team All-District 32-4A as a senior. He passed for 1,724 yards and 26 touchdowns and ran for 1,114 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was named the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Player of the Week on October 2, 2008 after rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns and throwing for 193 yards and two touchdowns against Weslaco East HS. He is the son of Saturnino and Elizabeth Nino and is undecided on his academic major.
Derek Tesch, a 6-4, 210-pound quarterback from Blanco, Texas played at Blanco High School. During his senior year, he was the District 27-2A MVP and earned Honorable Mention All-State honors. He threw for over 1,600 yards with 27 touchdowns and no interceptions. As a junior, he was an All-District tight end and defensive back. He made 176 tackles with six interceptions over his final two seasons. In his three seasons at BHS, he led the team to a 35-5 record. He led the team to a Bi-District championship in 2006, an Area championship in 2007 and a state semifinal appearance in 2008. He earned Academic All-State honors and the United States Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete Award. He is the son of Bill and Cheryl Tesch and plans to study Kinesiology.
Connell Davis, a 6-3, 201-pound Running Back transfer from University of Missouri, hails from Portland, Texas where he attended Gregory-Portland High School. He red-shirted his first year at Missouri, played 11 games and carried the ball six times as a red-shirt freshman and moved to linebacker as a sophomore making 13 tackles.In high school, Davis was rated as the No. 38 tailback prospect in the country, and the No. 78 prospect at any position out of the state of Texas by Rivals.com. He ran for over 4,000 yards in his high school career, while playing for G-P HS. He helped lead his team to an undefeated regular season in 2004, and a state quarterfinal showing in Class 4A. He rushed for 2,029 yards and scored 28 TDs, in being named a First Team all-state running back by the Texas Sports Writers Association and also earned team offensive MVP honors. He was a two-year team captain. He was a Second Team all-district running back as a junior, when he rushed for 1,156 yards and scored 17 TDs in helping lead his school to the second of three-straight district titles. He earned All-Metro Newcomer of the Year honors as a sophomore after rushing for 1,246 yards and 16 TDs in helping lead his team to the state semifinals. He is the son of John and Shannon Boesen and is majoring in Psychology.
Michael Gowens, a 5-8, 168-pound running back from Corpus Christi, Texas played for Flour Bluff High School. In two years on the varsity team, he rushed for an average of over 8.0 yards per carry. He was named the District 31-4A Most Valuable Player after rushing for 1,450 yards and 24 touchdowns. He rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns against Miller High School. He was a Caller-Times Super 11 pick this year. He led FBHS to a 17-7 record and a Bi-District championship the last two years. He is the son of Brigitte Guillory and plans to study Kinesiology.
CJ Griggs, a 6-1, 175-pound wide receiver from Cedar Lane, Texas played for Van Vleck High School. He earned First Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-Area honors as a senior. He was the state runner-up in the triple jump as a junior and was a First Team All-District basketball star. He is the cousin of both Quentin Jammer of the San Diego Chargers and Johnnie Lee Higgins of the Oakland Raiders. He is the son of Rodney and Helen Griggs and plans to study Kinesiology.
Donovan Penny, a 5-11, 158-pound wide receiver from Houston, Texas played for George Bush High School. He was named the team’s offensive player of the year in 2008. He is the son of Abe and Floretta Penny and plans to study Mechanical Engineering.
Edward Richardson, a 5-11, 180-pound wide receiver from San Antonio, Texas played for Roosevelt High School. He was a three-year letter winner who earned First Team All-District 26-5A honors as a senior. In 2008, he led RHS to a state playoff appearance. He was coached by former Javelina Neal LaHue. Vernon Rogers, a 6-0, 181-pound wide receiver-defensive back from Houston, Texas played at Klein Forest High School. He earned First Team All-District 13-5A honors as a junior and senior. He led KFHS to back-to-back Bi-District championships. He was a high school teammate of Tronte Robinson and Trey Hall. He is the son of Tangela Williams and plans to study Kinesiology.
Leo Gonzalez, a 6-3, 220-pound receiver from Harlingen, Texas played for Harlingen High School. He had 31 catches for 394 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior. He twice had two touchdown catches in a game and had over 100 yards receiving against Austin Westlake in the third round of the playoffs. He is the son of Sergio and Eneida Gonzalez and plans to study Kinesiology.
Larod Roberson, a 6-3, 292-pound Tight End transfer from Blinn College, hails from Houston, Texas where he played football at Elsik High School. He was part of a Blinn team that went 12-0 and earned honorable mention all-league honors. He is the son of Mary Roberson and plans to study Health and Kinesiology.
Brady Brown, a 6-3, 292-pound offensive lineman from San Antonio, Texas played his high school ball at O’Connor High School. He was a four-year letter winner and three-time All-District honoree. He was named First Team All-San Antonio as a senior. He helped lead OCHS to the Area finals in his final two seasons and an undefeated district record as a junior. He served as the President for Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years. He is among the Top 75 Scout.com South Texas Football prospects for 2009. His grandfather, Bobby Maples, played 14 seasons in the NFL earning all-pro honors in 1967 and 1974, played in Super Bowl XII and played in the 1968 Pro Bowl. He is the son of Andy and Shannon Brown and plans to study History/Education.
Lee Mattingly, a 6-5, 275-pound Offensive Tackle transfer from Northern Michigan University, hails from New Lenox, Illinois where he played football at Lincoln-Way Central High School. He red-shirted his one season at NMU. He was a two-time all-league selection in high school. He helped lead the team to a conference championship and two playoff appearances. He is the son of Kristin Mattingly and plans to study Education.
Kip Maxwell, a 6-3, 295-pound offensive lineman from Brenham, Texas played for Brenham High School. He was part of a 2007 District championship squad and played a key role in the team’s 2008 4A Division II Regional Finalist appearance. He earned First Team All-District honors as a senior and is a two-time Academic All-District honoree. He is the son of Dr. Gerri and Art Maxwell and plans to study Engineering.
Ray Quintanilla, a 6-4, 300-pound Offensive Lineman transfer from Army, is a 2006 graduate of San Benito High School in San Benito, Texas. He helped lead SBHS to the state playoffs in 2004 and 2005. He earned All-District 32-5A, All-Valley, All-Bay Area, All-South Texas and All-State honors. He was named the United States Military Academy Prep School Lineman of the Year in 2006-07. As a freshman at Army, he made the travel team. He is the son of Refugio and Eduwiges Quintanilla and plans to study Kinesiology.
Devin Shaw, a 6-5, 321-pound offensive tackle from Katy, Texas played for Seven Lakes High School. He is listed among the Greater Houston Top 250 prospects list at #98, the Texas 5A Players to Watch and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football as a top prospect. He is also a second degree black belt in Taekwondo. He is the son of Elvis and Maria Shaw and is undecided on his academic major.
Marcus Stager, a 6-5, 315-pound offensive lineman from New Braunfels, Texas played at New Braunfels High School. As a senior he earned Second Team All-District 26-5A and All-CEN-TEX Team honors. He is the son of Randall and Paula Stager and plans to study Civil Engineering.
Victor Castro, a 6-2, 255-pound defensive lineman from San Antonio, Texas played for Earl Warren High School. As a senior, he earned First Team All-District and Second Team All-Greater San Antonio honors. He led Warren HS to a Bi-District championship in 2007 and a District championship in 2008. Clint Nix, a 6-2, 250-pound Defensive End transfer from Santa Barbara City College, hails from Oakley, California where he played football and rugby at De La Salle High School. He recorded 62 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks for SBCC in 2008. He earned Second Team All-American Pacific Conference honors as a sophomore and honorable mention honors as a freshman. Aaron Buckley, a 6-1, 225-poundLinebacker transfer from Texas A&M, red-shirted this past fall in College Station. He was a hig hly touted four year starter at Palacios High School in Palacios, Texas. As a senior, he was named First Team on Dave Campbell’s Preseason Super Team, AP All State 3A, Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) All State 3A, District 29AAA and All Victoria Advocate. He earned AP Defensive AAA Player of the Year, THSCA Defensive AAA Player of the Year, District 29AAA Most Valuable Defensive Player and Victoria Advocate Area Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the Texas Football Second Team All Texas Team. As a junior, Buckley was one of Dave Campbell’s Preseason top 100 Junior’s in the state. He earned Honorable Mention All-State AAA, First Team All-District 29AAA and All-Victoria Area honors. He was also an undefeated state champion in power lifting and holds three regional records. He is the son of Darrell and Deanna Buckley and is undecided on his major.
Nathan Goldie, a 6-0, 210-pound Linebacker transfer from Santa Barbara City College, hails from Morgan Hills, California where he played football and lacrosse at Live Oak High School. He led the Vacqueros of SBCC to the American Pacific Conference championship in 2008 earning First Team all-California and First Team All-APC honors after recording 88 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. As a freshman, he earned Second Team All-APC honors. At Live Oak HS, he was a two-time First Team all-league performer and played in the 32nd annual Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Game. He is the son of Beau and Susan Goldie and plans to study Business Administration.
Ricky Marshall, a 6-1, 200-pound linebacker from Tyler, Texas played his high school ball at John Tyler High School. He earned Second Team All-District 11-5A honors and helped lead his team to a Bi-District championship. He was named the JTHS Student of the Month for January 2009 and is on the A+ honor roll. He is the son of Rick and Gail Marshall and plans to study Electrical Engineering.
Tronte Robinson, a 6-0, 187-pound linebacker from Houston, Texas played for Klein Forest High School. He earned All-District 13-5A honors and was the team’s most valuable linebacker. He is a high school teammate of Vernon Rogers and Trey Hall. He is the son of Timothy and Cheryl Robinson and plans to study Kinesiology.
Marc Kinney, a 6-2, 200-pound Safety transfer from Cisco Junior College, hails from Lavernia, Texas where he played football, basketball and ran track for MacArthur High School. At MacArthur, he earned First Team All-District, First Team All-City and Second Team All-State honors while leading his team to the state semifinals. He is the son of Laetitia Kinney and plans to study Psychology.
Miyoko Turner, a 5-9, 158-pound corner back from Garland, Texas played for Garland High School. He earned Honorable Mention All-District honors as a junior and moved up to Second Team All-District honors as a senior. He was part of two state playoff teams and was on the A-B honor roll as a senior. He is the son of Miyoko and Andrea Turner and is undecided on his academic major.
Tyler McAfee, a 6-2, 205-pound transfer from Nicholls State University, hails from Port Lavaca, Texas where he played football, basketball and golf at Calhoun High School. At CHS, he was named the Bay Area Offensive Player of the Year, District 30-4A MVP and team MVP. He rushed for 2,334 yards and 42 touchdowns during his senior year in 2006. He scored eight touchdowns and rushed for 324 yards in a bi-district contest in 2006. As a true freshman at NSU, he played in three games carrying the ball eight times for 21 yards. He is the son of Donald and Joan McAfee and plans to study Wildlife and Range Management.
Joseph Vela, a 5-11, 170-pound athlete from Harlingen, Texas played for Rio Hondo High School. He is the brother of former Javelina quarterback Joey Vela. As a sophomore he was named the District 32-3A Newcomer of the Year and Second Team all-Valley. He ranked among the state leaders with 11 interceptions and while making 32 receptions for 550 yards. As a junior, he was a Second Team All-District quarterback. He rushed for 766 yards, completed 71 percent of his passes for 911 yards and accumulated 24 total touchdowns in leading the Bobcats to first undefeated regular season since 1973. As a senior Vela was the unanimous District 32-3A Most Valuable Player. He was named the Valley Offensive Player of the Year and took home Honorable Mention All-State honors. He rushed for 2,017 yards on 202 carries with a long run of 83 yards and 20 touchdowns. He completed 70-of-157 passes for 914 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He led the Bobcats to the Area round of the playoffs as a sophomore and junior and to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history as a senior. He is the son Walter and Sheila Vela and plans to study Civil Engineering.
Jake Willingham, a 6-2, 220-pound athlete from Van Alstyne, Texas, is a three-sport athlete at Van Alstyne High School. He passed for 2,400 yards and 29 touchdowns en route to earning Second Team All-State, First Team All-Texomaland and District Most Valuable Player honors. He is the son of Cindy Willingham and is undecided on his academic major.
Matt Stoll, a 6-0, 160-pound placekicker and punter from College Station, Texas, played his scholastic ball at A&M Consolidated High School. He earned Second Team All-District 12-AAAAA as both a kicker and punter this past fall. He is the son of Mike and Debi Stoll and plans to major in Game Ranch Management.
