LSC Volleyball Weekly Release: ASU leads league

The Lone Star Conference regular season is down to two weeks of play, with the top eight teams advancing to the LSC Championship to be hosted by the No. 1 seed.  Angelo State is in the driver’s seat to win the LSC Championship and host the Tournament with a two-game lead.  ASU, Tarleton State, West Texas A&M, Texas Woman’s and Texas A&M-Commerce have secured a berth in the championship field.

  
LSC volleyball teams are 150-128 overall this season.  The squads are currently 10-17 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 11-12 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Rachel Robertson, Texas A&M University - Commerce, SR, Princeton, Texas, Princeton HS
Robertson had one of the best weeks of her career, helping the Lions to three 3-0 sweeps at Abilene Christian, against Cameron and against Midwestern State ... Robertson tallied 53 kills with a .551 hitting percentage, averaging 5.9 per set ... She recorded a career-best 25 kills at Abilene Christian hitting .477 helping the Lions to their first win in Abilene since 1995 ... Robertson had no hitting errors against both Cameron and Midwestern State, recording 15 kills and a .652 average against the Aggies and 13 kills with a .591 average against the Mustangs ... Her .394 hitting percentage on the year sits second in program history and is just 31 kills shy of moving into third-place all-time in career kills.

Maddie Huth, Angelo State University, JR, The Colony, Texas, The Colony HS
Huth showcased herself as one of the most feared offensive threats in the Lone Star Conference in helping lead the Angelo State Belles to three wins last week over Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. Huth had a season-high 21 kills in ASU’s four-set win over WT and finished the week with 42 kills and an astonishing .500 hitting percentage in 10 sets played. Huth has been on a tear in LSC play this season offensively, but also with her blocking on defense. Huth had 11 blocks last week and also added three aces for good measure.

DEFENSIVE
Shelby Wilt, Angelo State University, SO, Dalhart, Texas, Dalhart HS
Wilt was everywhere last week for Angelo State in the team’s wins over Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. Wilt finished the week with 78 digs for a 7.80 digs per set average. Her 41 digs against West Texas A&M in a four-set match established a new career record for the sophomore who went over the 1,000 dig mark in her career in Saturday’s match against ENMU. Wilt also had two aces and six assists last week.

Lauren Beville, West Texas A&M University, SR, Hereford, Texas, Hereford HS
Beville continued to lead the Lady Buffs this past weekend as they went 2-1 with the lone loss coming to #9 Angelo State on Friday night at the Junell Center. Beville tallied a season high 29 digs on Saturday afternoon in Stephenville to improve her career total to 2,187 and move just 61 digs away from Sara Contreras (2,248) for first all-time in Lady Buff history. The Hereford, Texas native passed former Lady Buffs great Brittani Bell (2,150) on Friday night for second place.

SETTER
Alex Woolsey, Angelo State University, SR, Plano, Texas, Plano East HS
Woolsey continues to lead a potent Angelo State offense at the setter position and help the team cross goals off its list. Woolsey was instrumental in three wins over Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico last week with 132 assists (13.20 per set), including 55 in a four-set win over WT. Woolsey now has 4,691 assists in her illustrious career at ASU and is only 95 assists from becoming the all-time leader in Belle history.

Jordan Neal, Texas A&M University - Commerce, JR, Joshua, Texas, Joshua HS
Neal continued to control the Lion offense to three 3-0 sweeps over Abilene Christian, Cameron and Midwestern State ... Neal posted 123 assists, averaging 13.67 per set, with 10 aces ... She recorded 39 assists in the win over the Wildcats with four kills and 11 digs, leading the Lions to their first win in Abilene since 1995 ... Against Cameron, Neal had 48 assists with 12 digs as the Lions hit .364 in the win over the Aggies ... Against Midwestern State, Neal had 36 assists and six service aces in leading the Lions to the 3-0 sweep ... She sits 112 assists shy of becoming the fourth player in program history with back-to-back 1,000 assist seasons.

LSC FOOTBALL
Three Lone Star Conference games and a trio non-conference contests are on tap this week.  The spotlight will be on Canyon, Texas, as West Texas A&M hosts Midwestern State in a top-25 showdown Saturday for the LSC Championship.   The Buffaloes have won eight straight games, while the Mustangs tout a seven-game winning streak.
    

Non-conference action includes three GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge contests with Texas A&M-Kingsville at Valdosta State Thursday, plus Abilene Christian hosting West Alabama and Tarleton State at North Alabama on Saturday.  The TAMUK-VSU game will be available on ESPN3, and Tarleton-UNA on ESPN3 and ESPN GamePlan.
    

After six contests of the 10-game GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge, the series is even at 3-3, with WT winning at West Georgia last week to continue the trend of the visiting teams prevailing.
    

LSC football teams are 38-39 overall this season.  The squads are 2-3 combined versus the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Dustin Vaughan, West Texas A&M University, JR, QB, Corpus Christi, Texas, Calallen HS
Vaughan tied his season and career-high with five touchdown passes as he helped bring the Buffaloes back from a 14-7 first quarter deficit for a 52-28 win at West Georgia extending the Buffs’ tie for seventh-longest current winning streak to eight games. Vaughan had five touchdown passes versus Western State in the second game of the season. WT tied the series at 3-3 in the GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge. Vaughan’s 331 yards gives him 6,536 for his career as he is 888 yards away from fifth all-time in school history for career passing yards. He has 30 touchdowns on the year and just five interceptions with a league-high 2883 yards. He is ninth nationally in passing efficiency for the year (165.90) and 12th in total offense (324.11).

DEFENSIVE
Taylor McCuller, West Texas A&M University, JR, LB, Red Oak, Texas, Red Oak HS
McCuller had a career-high and West Texas A&M season-best 20 total tackles, which is also tops in the LSC this year, with eight solo stops at WT won 52-28 at West Georgia Saturday. He helped lead the team to 96 total tackles and 38 solo tying WT’s season-high and helped lead the defense to five sacks for 34 yards and nine tackles for loss for 49 yards. The Buff defense recovered a fumble and had two quarterback hurries. In addition, McCuller and the Buffalo defense held UWG, the 23rd-best rushing team in the country coming in, to 151 yards rushing over 80 yards below its per game average at 223.14. The Buff rush defense is 28th nationally, while total defense is 19th in the country and leads the nation in sacks and is third in tackles for loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Matt Stoll, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, JR, K, College Station, Texas, A&M Consolidated HS
Stoll had two first quarter field goals against Angelo State of 45 and 44 yards. The 45-yard field was the longest of the season and first over 40-yards this season.  He added four extra points in the Javelinas victory.  Stoll kicked his career-long field goal of 49 yards against ASU a year ago. He is closing in on the single-season record for field goals. With at least two games remaining, Stoll has 15 field goals, the single-season mark is 16 set by Walter Rule in 1985.

All other teams have at least three losses and no realistic chance at playoffs.  CSU-Pueblo and Ashland look to be locks, even with a loss in the final two weeks.  No one else has that kind of cushion, but a combination of losses from teams around them doesn't automatically eliminate any of the top 6 teams.

Could the RMAC get three teams in?  It's possible if New Mexico Highlands upsets CSU-Pueblo and those two and Chadron don't stub their toes in the final week.

Could the LSC get two teams in?  Also possible, if NMHU loses this weekend, and SVSU and Grand Valley drop on of their remaining games.  Not sure if Missouri S&T would jump over the WTAM-MSU loser.

Seven Top 25 Upsets Cause Reshuffling in Division II Poll

For the second time in three weeks, seven Top 25 teams lost causing a reshuffling of the rankings in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The top three spots remained the same, with Colorado State-Pueblo staying No. 1 with 24 first-place votes. Winston-Salem State (N.C.) still sits No. 2, with six first-place votes, followed by No. 3 New Haven (Conn.). Then-No. 4 Bloomsburg (Pa.) was upset by new No. 7 Shippensburg (Pa.), 49-42, causing both Northwest Missouri State and Ashland (Ohio) to move up one spot apiece, to No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
This week, there are five Top 25 matchups that will have a say in who wins conference titles. The first game is No. 4 Northwest Missouri State hosting No. 20 Emporia State (Kan.), with the winner having a leg up in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) title chase. The second matchup has No. 6 Minnesota State-Mankato hosting No. 17 Sioux Falls (S.D.) with first place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division on the line. First place in the Lone Star Conference is at stake when No. 12 West Texas A&M plays host to No. 10 Midwestern State (Texas), while No. 11 Missouri Western State and No. 25 Washburn (Kan.) play in another key MIAA matchup. The final Top 25 matchup has No. 15 Miles (Ala.) facing No. 23 Tuskegee (Ala.), with first place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division at stake.

Week Nine Superlatives

Offense - Dustin Vaughn, West Texas A&M - Vaughn once again put up big numbers, completing 28-37 passes for 331 yards and 5 TDs (to 5 different receivers), in WT's 52-28 road win at West Georgia.  Heading into this week's game with Midwestern State, Vaughn has completed 65% of his passes for 2,883 yards and 30 TDs.

Defense - Justin Stewart, Abilene Christian - Stewart was having a pretty quiet game, registering three tackles, before making the game saving play.  With ACU holding a slim 24-17 lead and Texas A&M-Commerce driving, Stewart picked off a Kevin Vye pass at the ACU 2 yard line and returned it to the 22, sealing the win for the Wildcats.

Special Teams - Matt Stoll, Texas A&M-Kingsville - Stoll rebounded from a 3 missed PAT game at Tarleton with a perfect night against Angelo State.  He connected on field goals from 45 and 44 yards in the first quarter, giving the team points early when the offensive drives bogged down, and then was good on all four PAT's when the Javelinas were able to finish out their drives.

LSC Football Recap - Week 9

West Texas A&M 52, West Georgia 28
No. 14 West Texas A&M scored 24 points in the second quarter and never looked back as it won 52-28 at West Georgia Saturday night.  With the win, the Buffs improved to 8-1 on the year, while UWG fell to 3-5. 
 
The Buffs were paced offensively by junior quarterback Dustin Vaughan who went 28 of 37 for 335 yards and tied his season and career-high with five touchdown passes.  Senior running back Khiry Robinson led the way with 89 yards on the ground and had four receptions for 12 yards and a score.  True freshman Word Hudson led the team receiving with five catches for a career-high 90 yards and a score, while redshirt freshman Jarrian Rhone had a career-high 10 catches for 77 yards and a score.  For the game, WT amassed 463 yards of offense with 344 through the air and 119 on the ground.   
 
UWG was led by running back David Bailey who had 70 yards and a score on the ground.  Freshman quarterback Dallas Dickey had 56 yards rushing and a score, as well as going 7 for 10 for 112 yards and two touchdowns through the air.  (Click here for complete release)

 
Midwestern State 51, Eastern New Mexico 28
Midwestern State's Chauncey Harris and Keidrick Jackson combined for 280 rushing yards to lead the 11th-ranked Mustangs to a 51-28 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

MSU has won seven consecutive games since suffering a season opening setback at Tarleton State. The win sets up a showdown with West Texas A&M, which won its eighth straight game by a score of 52-28 Friday night at West Georgia.

Harris rushed for a career-high 155 yards on 15 carries including a pair of touchdown runs (21, 20) while Jackson delivered his fifth 100-yard performance of the season running for 125 yards on 16 carries with a pair of touchdowns.  (Click here for complete release)

Tarleton’s Jake Fenske completed his first 13 passes on the evening, tossed five touchdowns, ran for one score and passed for 280 yards while leading the Texans to a 45-20 Lone Star Conference win over Incarnate Word at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium in San Antonio on Saturday night.
 
The Texans (4-4, 4-3 LSC) reached the 40-point mark for a second time this season and posted its largest score in a game since putting up 48 points against UIW in Stephenville last season.
 
Making his first-ever start for the Texans,Fenske found Clifton Rhodes III for a five-yard touchdown on Tarleton’s first play from scrimmage. The play came immediately following a punt block from Julius Hurndon which gave Tarleton the ball on Incarnate Word’s five-yard line. Blake Barnes  was successful on the point-after-attempt and the Texans led 7-0 very early, with 13:01 left to play in the first quarter still.  (Click here for complete release)

 
 
Abilene Christian 24, Texas A&M-Commerce 17
Mitchell Gale threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Darian Hogg with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter Saturday as Abilene Christian escaped Memorial Stadium with a 24-17 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in Lone Star Conference football action.

The Wildcats trailed 14-3 at halftime and 17-3 in the third quarter before ACU scored two third-quarter touchdowns to knot the game at 17-17 going to the fourth quarter.  Commerce missed a 21-yard field goal with 8:29 left in the game that would have given the Lions a 20-17 lead, and then the teams traded turnovers and then punts, giving the Wildcats the ball at their own 15-yard line with 1:31 to play in the game.

On first down, Hogg shook his defender at the line of scrimmage and got free and caught a perfectly thrown ball from Gale.  Hogg would not be caught from behind as he sprinted into the end zone with the sixth-longest touchdown catch in ACU history.  (Click here for complete release)

 
Texas A&M-Kingsville 34, Angelo State 21
Nate Poppell threw for three touchdown passes and rushed for another, while Matt Stoll connected on field goals of 44 and 45 yards as Texas A&M-Kingsville claimed a 34-21 Saturday night at Javelina Stadium.

With their fourth consecutive win of the season, the Javelinas move to 5-4 on the season and 4-3 in the Lone Star Conference. By downing the Rams (4-5, 3-3), Kingsville moves into a third-place tie with Tarleton in the standings but hold the tiebreaker on the strength of last week’s win in Stephenville.

Kingsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead by Stoll who converted a season-high 45-yard field goal at the 8:32 mark.  After ASU’s Blake Smith completed an 8-play, 78-yard drive with an 8-yard run, Stoll kicked a 44-yard field goal to make it a 7-6 contest with 1:15 lead.  (Click here for complete release)

Week 9 Game Day Previews and Predictions

Last week we only picked 3 of the 5 games correctly, missing out by picking Incarnate Word and Tarleton State.

Milestones
Mitchell Gale is tied with Keith Null for second in LSC history with 92 career TDs (Billy Malone had 114)
Wes Wood needs 73 passing yards to reach 7,500 for his career
Nate Poppell surpassed the 5,000 yard mark last week at Tarleton State
Dustin Vaughn is 45 yards shy of 5,000 passing yards for his career
Dakarai Pecikonis surpassed 2,000 receiving yards
CJ Akins needs 69 receiving yards to join him
Jonathan Woodson needs 68 rushing yards to hit the 2,000 mark.  Last week he surpassed 2,000 kickoff receiving yards and 5,000 all purpose yards.


Abilene Christian at Texas A&M-Commerce
Both teams are coming off of close losses where they held slim fourth quarter leads, and both are in the midst of disappointing seasons.  That is about where the team similarities end.  ACU is having an off-year on both sides of the ball yardage-wise, but is among the LSC leaders for offensive efficiency and red-zone optimization - in other words, they are capitalizing on their opportunities better than most.  The Lions, on the other hand, are near the bottom in yardage, scoring and efficiency.  ACU wins 35-17.


Eastern New Mexico at Midwestern State
The leagues top two rushing teams and bottom two passing teams should mean a quick game.  ENMU has a good running game, averaging 202 yards per game and 4.1 per carry.  MSU has a very good running game, picking up 317 yards per game and 7.1 per carry, with 4 fewer attempts per game than ENMU.  Also favoring MSU is the ENMU run defense, 8th in the LSC, giving up 192 yards per game (and last in points allowed, 41.1).  That's enough to pick MSU 42-14.


Tarleton State at Incarnate Word
At the end of this season, the Texans are going to look back and wonder why they didn't win more games.  They were in a position to win three of the games they have lost to date, but turnovers and special teams cost them.  They are right up there with WTAM and MSU in yards gained, but well behind them in scoring.  The defense is not giving up yards, but is 7th in points allowed.  They are the polar opposites of ACU in efficiency.  As for the Cardinals, they are plodding through another season of playing well in some games, but not winning many of them.  The defense is playing well, but they don't score enough to win.  That should be the case this week - Tarleton 28-21.


West Texas A&M at West Georgia
The Wolves ended a four game losing streak knocking off North Alabama last week.  They are a run-first team, averaging 221 yards per game on the ground and just 146 through the air.  They have had 2-100 yard rushers the last two games.  They don't pass much, but when they do, you better be covering Bobby Burum, easily their leading receiver with 23 catches for 348 yards and 2 TDs.  Their defense has not been anything to write home about, giving up 179 yards rushing and 236 passing.  WT on the other hand has a shot to taking over the top LSC spots in total offense and defense and scoring offense and defense.  Dustin Vaughn continues to have a typical WTAM passing year, but Khiry Robinson could be the key to the offense.  The run-first Wolves should be a good prep game for WT's matchup against MSU.  If WT's focused on this week's game, they should win 38-14.


Game of the Week
Angelo State at Texas A&M-Kingsville
This year's matchup doesn't have the same cache of the 90's end of the season battles, it is still important.  The winner will have a leg up for third place in the LSC and a shot at the Kanza Bowl.  While the game itself is relatively unimportant, it does allow for the team to practice a few weeks longer, and both WT and MSU have had strong seasons following their Kanza Bowl appearances.  The Rams season has been a series of hits and misses (and a near miss last week).  The defense has really only had one game (Valdosta) that they didn't perform well, but the offense has been a bit inconsistent, and is only averaging 18 points and 325 yards over the past three games.  To make things more interesting, they will be without starting quarterback Blake Hamblin, who is out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Speaking of inconsistency, here are the Javelinas.  They have been good (CWU and Tarleton), okay (ACU and UIW), and bad (WTAM, MSU, TAMC and North Alabama).  Turnovers have played a huge part of those results -  +8 vs CWU and TSU, even vs ACU and UIW, -7 vs WTAM, MSU, TAMC and North Alabama.  Statistically, they are close to Angeo in almost every category, with the biggest difference in pass defense (Rams almost 50 yards fewer per game).  The Javelinas might also be without their starting quarterback, as Nate Poppell was injured again at Tarleton after two straight late hits by TSU.

This game is really a toss-up, so home-field advantage helps TAMK to a 27-24 win.

Men’s Basketball preseason poll and awards revealed

Tarleton State is favored by a slim margin in the 2012-13 Lone Star Conference men’s basketball preseason poll announced Thursday.

      The league's preseason polls reflect the opinions of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region.

      Tarleton edged Midwestern State for the No. 1 spot by seven points, as both teams earned 12 first-place votes each, for totals of 269 and 262, respectively.  The Texans and Mustangs shared last year’s championship with identical 15-3 league records.

      West Texas A&M was third with 246 points and four top votes, Incarnate Word fourth (166), and Cameron fifth (139).

      Texas A&M-Kingsville was sixth (130), Abilene Christian seventh (112), Angelo State eighth (95 and one first-place vote), Texas A&M-Commerce ninth (91) and Eastern New Mexico tenth (85).

      Furthermore,  WTAMU’s Donald Sims was tabbed as Preseason Player of the Year.  Sims was the popular choice with votes on 25 of the 29 ballots.  The remaining four votes were split amongst four other players.

      Sims, a senior from Chester, S.C., led the Buffs in scoring (14.1) and rebounding (9.3) last season.  He also led the league in rebounds en route to LSC Newcomer of the Year and all-LSC second team acclaim.

      The LSC has 10 teams set for this season and if the preseason poll is any indication the league race should be as tight as ever.  The season begins November 9 with LSC teams playing a double round robin league schedule, in which each team plays a home and away contest against each of the other teams to determine the LSC champion.

      The LSC champion will be the regular season winner determined by league games, while the postseason tournament winner is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the conference’s automatic qualification.  The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament set for March 6-9 in Allen, Texas.

Women’s Basketball: Preseason poll and awards announced

Tarleton State is the top choice to defend its Lone Star Conference title, according to the 2012-13 LSC preseason women’s basketball poll announced Thursday.

      The league's preseason polls reflect the opinions of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region.

      Tarleton (23-9 overall, 17-3 LSC) claimed its first-ever LSC Championship and Tournament crown last season.  The TexAnns earned first-place votes on 20 of the 31 ballots for a total of 323 points.  West Texas A&M finished second in the poll with seven first-place nods and 303 points.

      Midwestern State was third with 262 points and one top vote, Angelo State fourth (212 and two first-place nods) and Incarnate Word fifth (211).

      Texas Woman’s was tabbed sixth (176), Abilene Christian seventh (170 and one top vote), and Cameron eighth (157).  Texas A&M-Kingsville (98), Eastern New Mexico (93) and Texas A&M-Commerce (41) rounded out the poll.

      Additionally, ACU’s Mackenzie Lankford was honored as Preseason Player of the Year.  Lankford was the top choice on 14 of the 31 ballots cast.  Tarleton’s Kiara Wright and Peyton Adamson received four nods each, while four others collected the remaining votes.

      Lankford, a junior from Weatherford, Texas, was a Daktronics third team NCAA Division II all-America in 2011-12.  She led the league and finished fifth in NCAA Division II in scoring, with 21.5 points per game en route to All-Lone Star Conference first team acclaim.  Lankford was also named to the all-academic team.

      The LSC has 11 teams set for this season and the competition should be as close as ever.  The season begins November 9 with LSC teams playing a double round robin, in which each team plays a home and away contest against each of the other teams to determine the LSC champion.
