Lone Star Conference action continues this week, with league leader Texas Woman’s playing at Angelo State and Tarleton State, who are both just a game back.
LSC volleyball teams are 94-75 overall this season. The squads are
currently 10-17 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and
8-8 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the
NCAA South Central Region.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Shelbi Goode, Angelo State University, JR, Georgetown, Texas, Georgetown HS
Goode slammed down 4.73 kills per set to help lead the Belles to a 2-1 record last week. Goode finished the week with 29 kills in a five-set loss to West Texas A&M and had 52 kills for the week. Goode hit for a .336 percentage and led the team with 10 kills in a win over Eastern New Mexico and added 13 more in a home win over TAMU-Kingsville. Goode now has 218 kills this season through her first 52 sets played.
Josie Santos, Texas Woman’s University, JR, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Godofredo Furtado
Santos helped the Pioneers to three sweeps on the road last week and move into first place in LSC standings. She led the team with 37 kills and 44.5 points while posting a .337 hitting percentage. Santos also added 26 digs and seven total blocks including four solo blocks. She recorded two double-doubles with 11 kills and 11 digs at Cameron and 12 kills and 11 digs at Midwestern State. Santos led all three games in kills and has posted a team-best 86 kills against the conference foes this season.
Kathryn Evans, Cameron University, FR, Pearland, Texas, Pearland HS
Evans broke her career high in kills twice in the last week. She had a then career high 22 kills against Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 25 and then would break that record on Sept. 29 against St. Mary’s (TX) with 24 kills. Over the last week she had 68 kills averaging 4.00 kills per set with a .198 hitting percentage over four matches for the Aggies.
DEFENSIVE
Erin Dougherty, West Texas A&M University, SR, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS
Dougherty continued to impress in the front row for the #5 Lady Buffs as she tallied 27 kills for an average of 2.70 per set to go along with two solo and eight blocks assists on the weekend. The Omaha, Nebraska native tied her season high of 16 kills on Saturday afternoon against #11 Angelo State as WT outlasted ASU in five sets.
Nikki McNorton, Tarleton State University, SR, Houston, Texas, Channelview HS
Despite missing Tuesday’s game against Incarnate Word due to injury, McNorton bounced back with a strong weekend to help lift the TexAnns to two wins - including their first-ever win at the Box with a five-set victory over No. 5 West Texas A&M. McNorton had 17 total blocks on the weekend, including having a hand in nine total blocks against the Lady Buffs (one solo, eight assists). She also had 19 kills, a .255 hitting percentage and 30.0 total points.
SETTER
Lacy Hayes, West Texas A&M University, SR, Cypress, Texas, Cy-Fair HS
Hayes continued to grow into a leader for the #5 Lady Buffs this past weekend as she dished out an incredible 118 assists in two matches for an average of 11.8 per set to go along with seven block assists and two service aces on the weekend. The Cypress, Texas native dished out a season high 61 assists on Saturday afternoon as the #5 Lady Buffs outlasted the #11 Rambelles of Angelo State in a five set thriller in Canyon.
Kayla Rivero, Texas Woman’s University, SO, McKinney, Texas, McKinney HS
Rivero helped the Pioneers to three sweeps on the road last week and move into first place in LSC standings. She led the team with 60 assists in a 6-2 offense and guided the Pioneers to a .255 hitting percentage or better in all three games including over .300 in two games. Rivero also had 28 digs on defense and recorded a double-double with 23 assists and 15 digs at Midwestern State.
