A full slate of Lone Star Conference action continues on the women’s side, while the men have non-conference play on tap. West Texas A&M leads the women’s race with 15 points, with Texas Woman’s and Angelo State behind them. On the men’s side, Incarnate Word and WTAMU are the only teams with league victories.
LSC men’s soccer teams are 27-8-3 overall this season. The squads are currently 5-3-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 8-2-1 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
The women’s teams are 31-42-4 overall this season. The squads are currently 2-9-1 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 2-4 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CO-MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Wayne Bruton, West Texas A&M University, SO, F, Carrigaline, Ireland, Carrigaline Community School
Bruton led the team with three goals scored in two matches last week with a 3-0 shutout at Eastern New Mexico and a 4-1 win over Wayland Baptist. Had a at least one goal in both matches. Tallied four shots (.750) with three shots on goal (.750) which were all scores. Had a goal at ENMU as WT snapped a two-match skid in Portales, N.M., for its first win there since 2009 and first shutout there since 2005. Scored the first goal and added the game winner against Wayland Baptist for his first two goal match in his career. As a freshman last season, he had one goal on 12 shots, this season he has three goals on eight shots (.375).
Vincent Bailey, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Mid, Southport, Eng., Savio
Bailey netted his second hat-trick of the season in a 5-0 win against Ouachita Baptist. He tallied all three of his goals in the second half within 22:29 of each other. He fired a total of seven shots in the game, but all three of his shots on goal found the back of the net. He also assisted on another goal in the second half. He is now second in the nation in goals per game (1.33) and third in the nation in points per game (3.00).
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
William Garrett Cooper, West Texas A&M University, R-FR, Bedford, Texas, L.D. Bell HS
Cooper continued his impressive redshirt freshman campaign as he went 2-0 with a shutout and 11 saves (.917) in two matches last week. Logged all 180 minutes for a 0.50 goals against average. Stopped five shots in a 3-0 win at Eastern New Mexico for the first win there since 2009 and first shutout win since 2005. Had six saves in a 4-1 win over Wayland Baptist on Sunday. Cooper improved to 8-1-1 on the year as the Buffs are ranked 11th nationally and second in the region in the NSCAA poll. He has logged 893:34 minute with just 11 goals against and a league-leading 31 saves (.738). With his performance last week, he dropped his GAA to 1.11 for the year with 3.1 shutouts.
CO-WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Amber Guenther, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Mid, San Antonio, Texas, Johnson HS
Guenther started a pair of games for the Cardinals last week on the road. She was held scoreless in a loss at Eastern New Mexico despite firing three shots. On Sunday, she came back with her first career hat-trick in a 4-1 win at West Texas A&M. She attempted six shots in the game. She leads the team with five goals and 11 points on the season.
Victoria Perez, Eastern New Mexico University, SO, M, Rio Rancho, NM, Rio Rancho HS
Perez led the Zias this week with an offensive explosion against Incarnate Word. Perez collected goals in the 31st and 40th minute to provide the first two scores of the game and the eventual game winning goal. In addition, Perez collected the assist in the Zias third goal of the game. Perez’s five points against UIW is good for her career-high and ties her for ninth all-time for individual game records.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Mallory Whitworth, Midwestern State University, SR, McKinney, Texas, McKinney HS
Whitworth posted a pair of shutouts to lead Midwestern State to its first unbeaten week of the season earning a win against Texas A&M-Commerce and draws against Abilene Christian and Texas Woman’s University as all three games extended into double overtime. The senior from McKinney was credited with 15 saves with six coming against Texas A&M-Commerce and eight against then-LSC leading TWU. The clean sheets were her 18th and 19th of her career and just one behind MSU all-time shutout leader Elli O’Dwyer, who notched 20 blankings from 2002-05.
