A year ago, Mitchell Gale was fighting for the starting quarterback job.
Now, after throwing for 3,595 yards and a school-record 38 touchdowns, Gale has few worries about his role on the Abilene Christian University football team. He just wants to get better.
"It's kind of neat," he said. "My role has changed. Last spring, who the (starting) quarterback was still up in the air. I was trying to prove myself. I think I've done that, but I can't get complacent. I'm going to keep pushing, keep trying to be the best quarterback I can be."

Chauncey Harris rushed for 103 yards and quarterback Brandon Kelsey passed for 90 more as the Maroon team coasted to a 24-7 win over the Gold in Midwestern State's annual Maroon & Gold Spring Game Saturday at the MSU practice field.
The Maroon team put together two 13-play scoring drives, turned a fumble recovery into a field goal and also got a defensive touchdown to pick up the win in the intrasquad game that finishes off spring football practice for the Mustangs.
"Overall, I'd have to say I was pleased with the way we played today," MSU head coach Bill Maskill said. "Obviously there is room for improvement. But I thought the competition was good, they were enthusiastic and I thought we got a lot out of it.
"Chauncey Harris ran well and the defense ran to the ball well. Once I watch the tape I'll have a better idea of what we need to improve. But I thought we got better today."

Maroon beats Gold 24-7 in annual Spring Game - MSU Football
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Maroon squad scored on its opening possession and never looked back in winning the annual Maroon and Gold Spring Game 24-7 on Saturday at the MSU Practice Field.
The Maroon dominated offensively and took advantage of turnovers to add to the scoreboard.
Brandon Kelsey, the number one quarterback for the Maroon, completed 10-of -13 passes for 90 yards, but did not have a touchdown passing. But he did rush for 10 yards and a touchdown.
Chauncey Harris rushed 16 times for 103 yards, including a 30-yard romp. Keidrick Jackson rushed for 46 yards on 14 carries with the game’s first touchdown.
Kelsey led the Mustangs on two touchdown drives. The first was the game-opening 75-yard, 13-play drive that ended on Jackson’s one-yard plunge.
The second came on the second possession of the third quarter after the Maroon defense stopped the Gold after crossing midfield. That possession was also a 13-play drive for 87-yards that ended on Kelsey’s four-yard run.
The Gold made it a game near the end of the first half, when starting quarterback Jake Glover directed Gold on a nine-play, 93-yard drive. Glover connected on four-of-five passes in the drive to move from the Gold 9 to move inside the red zone. Then following a sack, found Sheldon Galloway wide open in the end zone for a 23-yard scoring strike.
But the Gold was also doomed by turnovers, accounting for 10 of the 24 Maroon points.
A fumble by Gold number two signal caller Boy Humphrey allowed Maroon a short field that came up with a Brendan Grimley 26-yard field goal.
The Maroon iced the game, leading 17-7 in the fourth quarter when Humphrey’s pass from the spread formation was batted then intercepted in the end zone by Corey Wright for the game’s final score.
Gold had one last opportunity, Aldo Quiroga marched the Gold from his own 20 to the Maroon 1. But Lester Bush was dropped for a yard loss and Quiroga’s pass on third down was intercepted by Ty Duncan to effectively end the game.
The Gold’s Glover led the quarterbacks with 142 yards passing on 13-of-17 with the 23-yard TD. Quiroga was 8-of-12 for 88 yards before the interception.
Gold’s Thomas Carper led all receivers with five catches for 68 yards, while Maroon’s Jared Freeman grabbed eight balls for 42 yards.

Green Trumps White 14-7 - NSU Football
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State closed out its 2011 spring football campaign with its annual Green & White Game Saturday at Doc Wadley Stadium.
Ryan Nolan's five-yard run late in the third quarter provided the difference as the Green squad logged a 14-7 win over the White in the 2-hour intrasquad scrimmage.
Head coach Kenny Evans said he saw several positive things from his group on the warm and windy afternoon.
"We were able to accomplish everything we set out to do with the 15 days of spring ball," said Evan. "The one thing that really stood out today was the running of Joel Rockmore, but there were others who stepped up and played well.
"We started preseason with 120 and finished with 90. There are battles at every position and I expect that will be the case when we pick back up in August. No position has been solidified and that makes for some terrific competition; something we haven't had in my four years here."
Sean Donohue scampered 73 yards on the first play from scrimmage for the Green to put his team in front 7-0 early in the first quarter. Donohue, a returning wide receiver, also caught five passes during the game.
Rockmore scored the White's lone TD later in the first period on a play that appeared headed for a loss of yardage. However, the speedy redshirt freshman made three defenders miss, then broke into the open and ran 57 yards to paydirt for a 7-7 score.
Nolan capped a 50-yard scoring drive in the third on a bootleg around the right end. The winning drive was set up when Terrance Leach picked off a pass and was tackled at midfield.
"When we return in the fall we'll have an offensive line that's been playing together for three years and we've bolstered that position with four transfers," said Evans. "Trey (McVay) and Nate (Robinson) were two we held out today because of injury, but they'll be ready to go.
"One thing we are going to have to do is get better game management out of our quarterbacks. Kenny Davis is the returning starter and the behind him, it's wide open. However, we are still turning over the ball way too much. That is going to have to change."
The RiverHawks are scheduled to open the 2011 season at home on Aug. 27 when it hosts Bacone College. A week later, NSU will travel to face the University of Texas-San Antonio in the Alamo Dome where Northeastern State alumnus Larry Coker will launch that school's first-ever football program.
