Top assistant ready to compete against McCasland
For the past two basketball seasons, Nelson Haggerty has done everything possible to help Grant McCasland win.
Now he will do everything in his power to beat him.
Just one week after McCasland announced he was leaving Midwestern State to become the head coach at Abilene Christian, his top assistant announced he was staying at MSU.
On Tuesday, Haggerty was promoted to head coach of the Mustangs.
He is 16th head basketball coach in Midwestern history and the first African-American male to be a head coach in any sport at the school.
"I am ready to get this thing rolling and making a national championship run next season," the 37-year-old Baylor graduate said to an enthusiastic gathering of MSU boosters.
Athletic Director Charlie Carr said just about everybody he talked to thought Haggerty was the right man for the job.
"I started with each one of the players and went throughout a group of people who mean so much to our university. All felt like Nelson was a great choice," Carr said.

McCarty please with first series of spring workouts
Ada — Five practices into the third spring camp of his second tour as East Central’s head football coach, Tim McCarty hasn’t really been surprised by anything he has seen from his suddenly veteran squad. And, he said, that’s a good thing.
McCarty and his staff spent the offseason identifying what the Tigers did well and not so well during their 5-6 campaign last fall. At the top of their to-do list heading into the spring were upgrading all phases of the offense and tweaking a defense that was the most successful in the Lone Star Conference and one of the most proficient in the nation at forcing turnovers into 2010.
“I would say we’re right on schedule,” McCarty said after Monday’s spirited two-hour practice, which put the Tigers one-fourth of the way through their 20 allotted spring workouts. “We needed to work on having some confidence to make throws, and I’ve seen that. I’ve also seen some improvement in the running game.
“I’m pleased with our coverage in the secondary and with our ability to make plays,” he added. “I’ve seen a lot of contested catches, which tells me our quarterbacks (Tyler Vanderzee and Robert Thomas) believe they can stick the ball in there and our receivers and defensive backs are both in position to make plays. We’re seeing ability versus ability there, and I like that, because I want our receivers to be more aggressive.”

Softball Weekly Release: MSU wins crossover title - LSC Office
Midwestern State took home the Lone Star Conference Softball Crossover Tournament title with a 5-1 run during the three-day, 40-game event in San Angelo, Texas. The Mustangs were one of three North Division teams to go 5-1 as the North prevailed in 29 of the games. East Central and Central Oklahoma went 5-1 in the tournament as well. MSU earned its second consecutive tournament trophy by virtue of allowing the least runs, with five compared to ECU’s nine and UCO’s 10, in the tournament. After the 2011 tournament, the South Division is now 120-105 all-time against the North.

MSU continues to hold the top spot in the North Division standings at 5-1, with Southeastern Oklahoma and Cameron sharing second place (5-4). ASU has taken the lead in the South at 7-2, with Abilene Christian behind them at 6-3.
LSC softball teams are 323-226-2 overall, with a 168-134-1 record in the South and 155-92-1 in the North this season. The squads are currently 82-35 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 38-35 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
FIRST PITCH
Cameron set a new single season school record for strikeouts with 259, to top the previous record of 236 from 2009.
West Texas A&M’s Kasey Henderson broke the school mark for stolen bases in a season with 35 this year.
Angelo State was No. 2, Midwestern State No. 3 and West Texas A&M No. 15 in last week’s NFCA Division II Top 25 (March 30).

NORTH HITTER
Mallory Mooney, Midwestern State University, JR, 3B, Mesquite, Texas, Horn HS
Mooney hit .438 with five doubles and drove in five runs while helping No. 3 Midwestern State to its second straight Lone Star Conference Crossover title last weekend in San Angelo. The junior third baseman connected on a two-run double in MSU’s 2-0 win over No. 2 Angelo State Friday before driving in her 100th career run later in the afternoon with a sacrifice fly during a 9-2 victory over Abilene Christian. Mooney delivered a pair of run scoring doubles against Texas Woman’s on Sunday before closing the weekend with two more doubles against Tarleton State. She handled each of her 15 chances at the third base flawlessly and hasn’t committed a miscue in her last 11 games at the hot corner.
NORTH PITCHER

Tanner delivered a pair of two-hit shutouts of No. 2 Angelo State and No. 15 West Texas A&M while leading No. 3 Midwestern State to a Lone Star Conference Crossover title last weekend in San Angelo. The senior from Burkburnett has allowed just two runs in her last eight starts for a 0.28 ERA over 50 innings with 67 strikeouts and 12 walks. Tanner posted a 3-1 mark allowing one earned run on six hits in 18 innings with 27 strikeouts and four walks for a 0.39 ERA. She bettered her league leading ERA to 0.93 while improving 21-3 on the season.
SOUTH HITTER
Paige Colburn , Eastern New Mexico University, JR, SS/3B, Prairie Village, Kan., Shawnee Mission East HS
Colburn hit .385 at the LSC Crossover and registered multiple-hit games against Southwestern Oklahoma and Northeastern State. Against NSU, she was 2-for-3 with a double. Colburn singled against Cameron, scored a run and stole two bases.
SOUTH PITCHER
Cassandra Hernandez, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, SR, P, Harlingen, Texas, Harlingen South HS
Hernandez was in the circle for the Javelinas 4-2 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma. She allowed just one earned run in a complete-game effort against the Bulldogs to remain unbeaten this season at 3-0.

Belles Basketball Wins Division II WBCA Pink Zone Contest - ASU Basketball
CARY, N.C. – The Angelo State women's basketball team closed the book on another winning season, but it wasn't quite finished striving to be the best. Perhaps more important than their on-court success, the Belles were honored Monday night by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for contributing the most funds in Division II for the Pink Zone event.
The Belles proudly raised nearly $4,500 in their annual Pink Zone game and first-ever treadmill walk. The contest is an effort to reward participating teams in the WBCA Pink Zone who are also raising money for the Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation and the WBCA. Texas A&M won the contest at the Division I level, while Moravian College (Division III) and Viterbo University (NAIA) earned recognition for the second consecutive year. Schoolcraft College (JC/CC) and Hays High School (High School/AAU) were the winners in their respective divisions.
“We're thrilled to do anything we can to contribute to such an important cause,” Head coach Sally Walling Brooks said. “We've done [the Pink Zone game] every year, and this year we did a little better. We're competitive in everything we do and we want to win in everything. We're happy to contribute, but it is a nice award for our staff and our team to be number one in Division II.”
“We did do something a little different this year,” Brooks added. “We got walkers and they were sponsored to walk on the treadmill for four minute segments. We had the treadmills up in the Junell Center so they were able to see the game and people got to see them walking. The success was based on the walkers and how much they raised. We asked each walker to raise $250, but every one of them raised much more than that and that's where the money came from. Unfortunately, breast cancer is something that everyone will have to deal with, whether it's personal or someone we know. So it's important to be involved.”
Jostens, a long-time WBCA sponsor, will be giving a complimentary piece of jewelry from the Jostens Kay Yow Cancer Fund Jewelry Collection to the head coach of the team at each division (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, JC/CC and High School/AAU) that raised the most funding during its WBCA Pink Zone game for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. They also presented a plaque to the winning team at each division at the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Appreciation Reception in conjunction with the 2011 WBCA National Convention and NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind., Monday night.
