LSC Roundup 4-4

UCO focusing on defense in spring football practice - Scott Munn, NewsOK
Central Oklahoma averaged 32 points a game last football season. That should be more than enough to win a lot of games.

Instead, the Bronchos finished with a 2-9 record.

Wanna guess the focus of spring practice? Gold star if you said defense. That’s been a priority through a week’s worth of workouts at Wantland Stadium in Edmond.

Inexperience contributed to a defense surrendering 37 points and 428 yards per game. Central Oklahoma started three redshirt freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors and one senior on defense last fall.

“We knew it was going to be a struggle last season. We were so young on defense,” UCO coach Tracy Holland said. “They battled hard, and we lost some really close games.”

The Bronchos lost five games by seven or less points. Two games were lost in overtime.

“We’re changing some things up on defense,” Holland said. “We’ve gone back to teaching some of the fundamentals. Everyone has been enthusiastic and anxious to learn.”
