University of the Incarnate Word football coach Mike Santiago recounted an amusing anecdote Tuesday to illustrate how spring training has become sort of old hat for the Cardinals after only two seasons.
The Cardinals are bigger, stronger, faster and generally more talented than they were when they kicked off their first season in 2009, but Santiago has seen another indication that his players are growing up in a hurry.
“We had a couple of days when I really knew we were a veteran ballclub because the guys kind of took the day off,” Santiago said, chuckling. “The weather was nice, the girls were out sunbathing and our players were kind of cruising. I said, ‘There’s a veteran football team.’ I had to jump their butts.”

A new word has entered Mike Santiago's vocabulary, one that the Incarnate Word coach previously had no business using: veterans.
Santiago uses the word to describe the Cardinals, who wrap up the spring practice sessions with the Red and Black Spring Game at 7 tonight at Benson Stadium.
"Guys are growing up," Santiago said. "We're running so much new stuff (at practice), I even have to ask sometimes, 'What are we doing with this?' But the guys are such veterans right now, they're just rolling with it. It's been fun."
The bulk of UIW's first recruiting class will be entering its junior season, meaning that spring drills are no longer used to teach the basics of Santiago's offense. Now, the third-year Cardinals have focused on adding new wrinkles and fine-tuning their roles.
"The experience shows," running back Trent Rios said. "We're still learning, but we're taking the basic stuff and stretching it out."

Tarleton State football has started its spring football practices. However, 2011 brings quite a few changes to not only the coaching staff, but to the players themselves. Overweight players now have to lose weight to play for the Texans. "We're a very thin football team," said head football coach Cary Fowler. "If they haven't lost the weight, they're still on second team."
Practice starts at 6 a.m. on week days and 5 a.m. on Sundays. "Energy is good," Fowler said. "It's been a brutal off season. There's not many men that can go though what we're doing right now."
In 2010, the Texans were plagued with countless injuries. Only three are back in full force for the 2011 season; Arthur Buckingham, Aaron Doyle, and Matt Knicky. Quarterback Nick Stephens does partial practices but is still recovering from last season's injury.
With the 2010 seniors gone, sports opened up for some up and coming players. There are three players that Coach Fowler is especially excited about; Dre Jones, Truxton Fox, and Brian Ngwa. Ngwa is a defensive end. "He's probably, pound for pound, the strongest kid on the football team and probably the best student on the football team," Fowler said. "He's a great kid but he has turned into being a wonderful football player."
Changes have been made to the coaching staff as well. The Texans hired on offensive coordinator, Lee Hayes. Hayes has coached at A&M Kingsville, Baylor, and Houston and is also a 12-year marine. "You couldn't have hired a better guy," said Fowler. "He was the guy that I wanted from the very start."

Football: Football Spring Game Set for Saturday - SWO Football
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Fans wanting to get a sneak peek at the 2011 Southwestern Oklahoma State University football team can take a first-hand look Saturday, April 16 at the Annual Blue-White Spring Game. Starting time is set for 6 p.m. at Fast Lane Field on the west end of the SWOSU campus.
The event is open to the public and admission is free.
Third-year coach Dan Cocannouer will look to showcase a revamped offense that promises to be wide open and exciting in its structure. The SWOSU defense, which returns many of its top players from a year ago, also will have a new look with a greater emphasis on an aggressive and physical-style of play.
The simulated scrimmage will feature many of the characteristics of an actual game with officials, scoreboard, down-and-distance markers. Both the Blue and the White teams will be divided following a mock draft planned by the coaching staff.
Cocannouer said he is expecting a total of 80 players to be in uniform, giving his staff a number of options and the luxury to use different packages throughout.
“I know this game is something that our players are really excited about,” Cocannouer said. “We’ve made a lot of progress in a number of areas. We’re practicing the right way and maximizing the short amount of time that we do have.”
While Cocannouer concedes he is expecting a few of bobbles and bloopers that typically accompany a spring game, he believes the product on the field will be his best since his arrival in 2009.
“We are starting to get players who are familiar with our system, understand what we’re asking of them and committed to being a team first,” he said. “I think people will see that not only Saturday but hopefully as we continue to build this program in 2011 and beyond."
Spring Scrimmage Set For Saturday - UCO Football
Central Oklahoma will hold its annual spring football scrimmage Saturday evening at Wantland Stadium as the Bronchos look to wrap up the off-season practice schedule.:
UCO will have a short practice session starting at 5:35 p.m. Saturday before kicking off the hour-long scrimmage at 6:40. The Bronchos will return next week for their 15th and final spring practice.
"It's been a productive spring for us and we've made a lot of progress," UCO coach Tracy Holland said. "I've been really pleased with the attitude of our players and their willingness to work."

LSC Championships up next - LSC Office
The Lone Star Conference Golf Championships are up next for LSC teams. The league title will be determined by a 54-hole tournament for both men and women April 18-19-20 in San Antonio, Texas. The men will play at Randolph Oaks Golf Course, while the women tee off at The Republic Golf Course with 18-hole competitive rounds each day.
Tarleton State is looking to defend its three-year hold on the women’s trophy, while Abilene Christian reigns on the men’s side.

Cooper won the Doc Housewright Tarleton Invitational with a two-under par 142. She shot a 74 on Monday to take the lead after the first day of competition before shooting a four-under 68 on Tuesday to claim the victory by five strokes. She helped the TexAnns win by 19 strokes as Tarleton claimed its sixth victory of the season. Cooper is averaging 73.3 strokes per round.
