LSC Baseball Championship: SE wins title in 14-inning thriller - LSC Office
The most exciting game of the season was saved for the end of the 2011 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship as Southeastern Oklahoma rode the arm of Heath Wyatt to an exciting 7-6 win over Cameron in a 14-inning thriller.
Wyatt finished the tournament off with 13 innings of relief to pick up his sixth win of the season in his longest outing. He scattered five hits and only allowed one run while striking out eight to earn championship Most Valuable Player honors.
SE’s Justin Miller had an outstanding tournament going 5-for-7 in the second game, while scoring the game-winning run. Miller led off with a single and moved over to second on a wild pitch before Blake Gentry grounded out advancing him to third.
With two outs, Eric Walker recorded the biggest hit of the championship, a single up the middle that scored Miller and gave the Savage Storm their first NCAA regional berth since 2003.
SE forced the “if-necessary game” by coming through the loser's bracket and handing Cameron their first loss of the tournament, 10-4.
CU got an outstanding outing from Ricky Cramer, who pitched eight innings, in a no-decision with seven strikeouts and four walks. Cramer was coming off a complete game in the tournament opener for the Aggies as he scattered 11 hits.
SE improved to 34-17 on the season and earned the LSC’s automatic bid to the NCAA South Central Regional. CU fell to 33-16 on the year and will wait to see if they earn an at-large bid.

ABILENE, Texas – Southeastern’s Eric Walker connected on a 2-2 pitch, sending it up the middle and driving in Justin Miller to bring a marathon 14-inning contest to a close and earn the Savage Storm its third Lone Star Conference Championship with a 7-6 win over Cameron on Tuesday evening in Abilene, Texas.
The Savage Storm placed four players on the All-Tournament team as well as having the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament in Heath Wyatt.
Justin Miller, Kevin Phillips, Jimmy Johnson and Riley Keith each earned all-tourney recognition.

ACU's Walker keeps family tennis tradition going - Joey Richards, Abilene Reporter News
It's only natural some youngsters want to get away from their parents and their hometown, when it comes to choosing a college. After graduating from high school, they're ready go out in the world and begin a new chapter in their life — often far from the watchful eyes of their parents.
But not Jaclyn Walker. In fact, the 2007 Abilene High graduate not only chose to stay close to home, but she chose to play four years of tennis with an Abilene Christian University tennis program where her dad, John, serves as an assistant coach.
Jaclyn, who will end her ACU playing career at the NCAA Division II national tennis tournament this week in Altamonte Springs, Fla., said she doesn't regret her decision to stay home and play for her dad.
"It's been good," she said. "We've grown so much closer because of it. He's always been my coach, but he couldn't ever come out on the court or have that bond out on the court like he can at ACU. Getting to go on trips with him (in college), it's really cool. Most kids go off to college, and they're never around their parents."

Washington Signs With West Texas A&M Basketball - WTAM Basketball
West Texas A&M head basketball coach Rick Cooper has announced that Kennon Washington, a 6-4, 195 lb. guard from Faulkner State (Alabama) Community College will attend WTAMU and play for the Buffs during the upcoming 2011-12 season.
“Kennon is going to be very exciting to watch over the next two years,” coach Cooper said. “He is a big, physical guard that can score in a variety of ways. We believe that he will be an integral part of our team’s leadership with his maturity.”
During the recently completed 2010-11 season, Washington was the Sun Chief’s leading scorer, averaging 18.0 points per outing. He shot 44.0 percent from the field, while also averaging 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
A prolific scorer, Washington registered 12 games of 20 or more points, including a 30-point, 15-rebound performance against Gadsden State.
Following the 2010-11 campaign, he earned first-team all-State as well as first-team all-Region honors and was a first team all-State Southern Division honoree.
“We feel very fortunate to get a player like Kennon,” Cooper continued. “He had several Division I offers and after his visit to Canyon, he felt that WT would be his best fit. As a staff, we are extremely thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him over the next two years.”
Washington is the fourth player signed by Cooper’s staff this year, joining transfer Kerry Jones, a 6-6 forward from Tyler, Texas (Hill College), and incoming freshmen Kevin Waller, a 6-9, post from Groesbeck (Texas) High School and Jamarlas ‘Tez’ Dumars, a 6-2 guard from Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial High School.

Bronchos Add Seven - UCO Basketball
EDMOND (May 10) – Central Oklahoma men's basketball coach Terry Evans has announced the addition of seven players to the roster for 2011-12, with the Bronchos signing four talented transfers and three highly-touted state high school recruits.
Marcus Nelson and Ronald Norfleet from Western Oklahoma State College, Spencer Smith from Northern Oklahoma College-Enid and Josh Davis from Cameron are the transfers, while Woodward's Seth Heckart and Midwest City twins Cortrez and Cortrael Colbert are the prep standouts.
“We expect all seven guys to contribute next year,” said Evans, who led UCO to a 30-4 record and an NCAA Division II Sweet 16 appearance this past season. “It's a really good group that will help us in a lot of ways, especially defensively, and we're excited to have them join our program.”

SWOSU Begins Search for New Golf Coach - SWO Golf
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University has begun its search for a new golf coach after Mark Lumpkin informed officials his acceptance of full-time instructor position in the University’s Department of Finance, Management and Marketing.
Lumpkin, a SWOSU alum, returned to his alma matter in 2008 and served as both the women’s and men’s golf coach. During that time, he coached several all-conference and all-academic student-athletes and kept the Bulldogs competitive in one of the top conferences in NCAA Division II golf.
“This was not an easy decision, and I was honored to be given a chance to serve SWOSU and play a role in advancing the golf program,” Lumpkin said. “I will miss working with the players and watching them mature and grow as people. We have a very talented, young team, and I am confident that they will continue to improve and develop into something special over the coming years. I am looking forward to returning to my teaching career which will allow me the flexibility to spend more time with my family.”
SWOSU Athletic Director Todd Thurman, who will head the search for Lumpkin’s replacement, praised the outgoing coach for his service and contributions and being a valuable member of the school’s athletic department.
“I want to thank Mark for his efforts over the last three years,” Thurman said. “We respect his decision to return to the classroom and his desire to spend more time with his family. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors, one that we know will be filled with many more successes."
