Women's Golf: Tarleton finishes fourth at nationals - TSU Golf
The No. 2 Tarleton TexAnns finished in fourth place at the 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships Saturday in Allendale, Mich. to replicate the program’s best finish ever.
Tarleton shot a 305 on Saturday to pull within 10 strokes of third place Florida Southern (1,196) as the TexAnns completed the four-round championship with a 1,206 (306-306-289-305). Tarleton also finished fourth in 2010.
The TexAnns had the second lowest round of the tournament on Friday when shooting a 289, just six strokes off the lowest round of the event which was posted by national champion Nova Southeastern on the first day (283). NSU won its third straight national title on Saturday with a 1,157. Rollins finished second with a 1,185.
The Sharks Taylor Collins won the individual championship with a 10-under-par performance. She had rounds of 68, 69, 66 and 75.
The TexAnns finished 8 strokes ahead of St. Edward’s (1,234) while defeating host Grand Valley State (1,237) by 31 strokes. California, Pa. (1,248), Western New Mexico (1,249), Ashland (1,262), Augustana (1,262), Western Washington (1,263) and Concordia-St. Paul (1286) completed the field of competition.
Sharon Lau led the TexAnns with a 297 (79-76-72-70) as she finished ninth among individuals. Jacqueline Lau tied at No. 15 with a 301 (71-76-72-82) while Carla Cooper was No. 19 with a 302 (77-77-71-77). Katy Ward tied at No. 31 with a 311 (79-80-76-76) and Melanie Tham tied at No. 49 with a 320 (81-77-74-88).
The TexAnns won eight tournaments this season while finishing second, third, fourth and fifth once each. Tarleton has won 34 of 52 tournaments since the 2006-07 season, and the TexAnns have finished in the top five in all but two of those events.
Competing as an individual, Northeastern State’s Whitney McAteer's ended the 72-hole event with a total of 316 (80-76-77-83), which placed her in a tie for 38th overall.

LIONS ANNOUNCE CHANGE TO 2011 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE - TAMC Football
COMMERCE, Texas -- Texas A&M University-Commerce Athletic Director Carlton Cooper has announced a change to the Lions' 2011 football schedule. A&M-Commerce's previously scheduled game against Central Washington on Saturday, Sept. 24 has been cancelled. Instead, the Lions will battle Ouachita Baptist University at Memorial Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 22, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
"It is unfortunate that our game against Central Washington wasn't able to come to fruition, but we're excited about the addition of Ouachita Baptist," said Cooper. "The most exciting aspect is the chance to be able to play a home game on that Thursday to open up our home schedule. We've explored the options of playing a game on a Thursday, as opposed to a Saturday, and feel this will be a great opportunity to draw students, faculty, staff and the Commerce community out to our home opener."
The game between A&M-Commerce and Ouachita Baptist will be the fifth meeting between the schools, with the Tigers holding a 3-1 edge in the all-time series. The home opener will come off the heels of the Lions' Harvey Martin Classic game against Midwestern State at Cowboys Stadium the Saturday prior.
The game against Midwestern State is part of the Lone Star Conference's Football Festival on Sept. 17, which will feature three games in one day at the world's premiere football facility. Tickets for the Festival go on sale this Friday, with a full-day pass costing just $25. Season ticket information for A&M-Commerce's 2011 home schedule will be released shortly.

Four Finalists for Women's Basketball Job - TAMK Basketball
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The search for the next head coach of the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball program has been narrowed down to four finalists who will be on campus May 25 or 26 for an interview. The four finalists are Taqueta Braxton, Darin Spence, Michael Trujillo and Dean Walsh.
“I am excited about the pool of final candidates and hope to name a new coach by the first part of June,” said A&M-Kingsville athletic director Kenneth Oliver.
Braxton has been an NCAA Division I assistant coach for eight years and is a former University of Arkansas team captain. She worked for Lamar University for two years and spent six years at Stephen F. Austin. She has been heavily involved in all aspects of the recruiting process and was the recruiting coordinator for SFA where the team had a pair of 20-win seasons, won two regular season Southland Conference titles and one tournament title leading to one NCAA Division I Tournament appearance and two appearances in the WNIT. At Arkansas, she played four seasons under current Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair.
Spence has been involved in collegiate athletics for the past 26 years at the NAIA, NJCAA and NCAA Division I levels. He owns a career record of 426-215 as a head women’s basketball coach at Marymount College (Kan.), Butler County Community College (Kan.), Cowley County Community College (Kan.) and New Mexico State University. He spent the past eight years at New Mexico State where he made three WAC post-season tournament championship games and one WNIT appearance, the fourth post-season appearance in school history. He is second on the all-time wins list at NMSU. He was named the Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year five times and was the NAIA District 10 Coach of the Year once. He has served as an assistant athletic director and athletic director at the community college level. He spent three years on the NJCAA Region VI Ethics Committee and has been the President of the Jayhawk Conference Basketball Coaches Association. He has coached 10 All-Americans and 26 Academic All-Americans. As a player, he was the NAIA District 10 Defensive Player of the Year in 1984 at Marymount College.
Trujillo has been an NCAA Division I assistant coach for the past eight years and began his career as a student assistant for the women’s basketball program at Northern Arizona. He spent the last four years at Texas State where he was a part of one Southland Conference regular season championship team that made an appearance in the WNIT. He spent one season as an assistant coach at his alma mater Northern Arizona and three seasons at Sam Houston State. At all three schools, he was directly involved in recruiting and on-court coaching.
Walsh has been a highly successful head women’s basketball coach at the NJCAA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III levels. He began his career at Hiwassee College and made two NJCAA Sweet 16 appearances in three years. He went 27-6 and 30-4 over his final two years at HC earning Region VII Coach of the Year honors in both years and was the Tennessee Junior College Co-Coach of the Year in 1996. He moved on to his alma mater, Maryville College (Tenn.), for three seasons going 19-6, 20-6 and 22-5. He made one NCAA Division III tournament appearance and was the Great South Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2001. He coached 10 years at Carson-Newman compiling a 173-123 record that included a trio of 20-win seasons. He made four NCAA Division II tournament appearances and one Sweet 16 appearance in 2005. He has led Carson-Newman to the South Atlantic Conference semifinals or finals in each of the past four seasons. He was the SAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and NCAA Division II Region 3 Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007. He has served on numerous NCAA Committees and owns a career record of 300-163.
