LSC BASEBALL
The top six Lone Star Conference baseball teams will meet in Abilene, Texas, this weekend for the annual LSC Baseball Championship.
The tournament features six teams for the sixth straight year. The double-elimination event begins on Saturday and concludes on Tuesday. All games will take place at Crutcher Scott Field on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
LSC champion Incarnate Word is the top seed and also claimed its first-ever league title in their initial season. Southeastern Oklahoma is the No. 2 seed, while Tarleton State is third, followed by Cameron at No. 4, Southwestern Oklahoma at No. 5 and Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 6.
LSC baseball teams are 317-279 overall this season. Combined the squads are currently 37-19 versus Heartland Conference teams and 5-3 against the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

DIAMOND PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTERS
Travis Hayes, Tarleton State University, JR, INF, Arvada, Colo., Ralston Valley HS
Hayes helped the Texans finish off the regular season with a series victory over West Texas A&M this past weekend. The junior shortstop went 9-for-12 from the plate, good enough for a .750 average, a .750 on-base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage. With three doubles, five runs scored and two RBI’s, Hayes helped Tarleton to achieve the highest winning percentage in school history (.761) with his performance last week.
Ryan Cook, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, JR, CF, Houston, Texas, Mayde Creek HS
Needing to sweep East Central to have a chance to get into the LSC Tournament, Cook sparked the Javelinas to three straight wins. In the first game, he went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in a 6-5 win. On Saturday, he played a huge role in a 12-5, 15-5 doubleheader sweep. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s, two walks, a triple and a run scored in the opener. He came back with a triple, two walks, three runs and two RBI’s in the final game. Overall, he went 6-for-11 with four walks and a hit by pitch.
Chase Larsson, Cameron University, JR, CF, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Larsson broke the single-season LSC home run record with a three home run performance on Friday against Angelo State. In the series opener, Larsson belted a three-run shot in the third inning to tie Keith Towne’s 2009 record with 26 roundtrippers. On his next plate appearance, Larsson blasted another two-run homer over the right center fence to secure his place in the record books. The Vancouver native added another homer in the day’s second game to put his national-best mark at 28. This all while added 10 RBI on 6-of-13 at the plate (.462) with one double. Larsson also continues to lead the nation in RBI per game.
PITCHERS
Jorge Guarneros, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, P, Laredo, Texas, Laredo United HS
Guarneros capped Friday’s doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma with a seven-strikeout, two-hit complete game shutout of the No. 4-ranked Savage Storm as part of an 18-0 Cardinal victory. Guarneros hasn’t allowed a run in two games and has struck out seven or more opponents in his last five starts.
Ricky Cramer, Cameron University, SR, P, Stillwater, Okla., Redlands CC
Cramer tossed his team-leading fourth shutout of this season on Friday as the Aggies topped Angelo State 18-0 in seven innings. Cramer improved on his conference best 2.30 ERA with a complete game shutout performance while allowing just three hits from the bump. The senior from Stillwater also posted his second-highest strikeout total of the season, fanning 10, and batters his just .136 off him.

LSC SOFTBALL
The eight-team field has been determined for this week’s Lone Star Conference Softball Championship, which will be played over three days at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex in Durant, Okla., starting on Thursday, May 5.
The top four teams from both the North and South Divisions advanced to the NCAA Regional format double-elimination event. The field includes: Midwestern State, Southeastern Oklahoma, East Central and Cameron from the North and Angelo State, Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M and Texas Woman’s from the South.
MSU is the top seed in the North Division, while SE is No. 2, ECU is No. 3 and CU No. 4. The Mustangs claimed the North crown for the fifth time in eight seasons with a 13-4 record in league play.
ASU and UIW shared the South Division title with identical 15-6 marks, but the Rambelles are the No. 1 seed by virtue of winning two of three games against the Cardinals, who are in their first year of LSC play. UIW is the No. 2 seed, WTAMU is No. 3 and TWU is No. 4.
The tournament begins on Thursday at 12 p.m. with first round games. Action continues on Thursday with winner’s and loser’s bracket games at 2:30 p.m.
All games will be played at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex, located across from the Durant Country Club on Highway 78. Adult tickets are $8 for a one-day pass or a tournament pass is available for $20. Student tickets (with valid college I.D. or 18 years of age and younger) are $5 for one-day or $10 for the tournament.
LSC softball teams are 428-329-2 overall, with a 227-193-1 record in the South and 201-136-1 in the North this season. The squads are currently 92-42 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 41-40 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
FIRST PITCH
Midwestern State claimed the North crown for the fifth time in eight seasons.
Angelo State and Incarnate Word shared the South Division title. For the Rambelles it’s their third regular season crown since 2007, while the Cardinals earned its first division title in their first year of LSC play.
Texas Woman’s Bailey Vrazel set a new LSC and school record for stolen bases with 74, to break the previous record of 71 set in 1999 by Pioneers Cathy Jacobson.
The Mustangs pitching staff notched its 23rd shutout of the season. The total sets a new LSC mark and overtook Southeastern Oklahoma which posted 22 blankings in 2000.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
NORTH HITTER
Jeana Keyes, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, SR, OF, Corinth, Texas, Denton Ryan HS
Keyes helped power Southeastern to a weekend sweep of Northeastern State. Keyes turned in five hits in 11 at-bats, hitting .455 on the weekend. She posted a double and a home run to help account for her .818 slugging percentage and her .500 on-base percentage. She drove in four RBI on the weekend out of the lead-off spot in the lineup and still managed to score four times on her own.
NORTH PITCHER
Wanda Malone, East Central University, SR, Pitcher, Ponder, Texas, Ponder HS (Louisiana Tech)
Malone posted a 0.00 earned run average with two victories and a save as ECU swept a three-game series from Southwestern Oklahoma over the weekend. She fired a three-hit shutout with no walks and eight strikeouts as the Tigers edged the Bulldogs 1-0 in the series opener on Saturday. She then tossed the first three innings and picked up the win during a 9-1 five-inning, run-rule decision of SWOSU later Saturday as she allowed four hits and no walks while striking out one. In the series finale, she entered and retired the only two batters she faced on fly balls to nab her first save of the year. Malone pitched 10.2 innings combined in the three games, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out nine.
SOUTH HITTER
Bailey Vrazel, Texas Woman’s University, FR, SS, Danbury, Texas, Danbury HS
Vrazel single-handedly helped the Pioneers earn a postseason berth while setting a new Lone Star Conference record for stolen bases. Needing a win in the final game of the regular season she drove in all three runs in a 3-2 win over #13 Angelo State for the final spot in the LSC Tournament. She also stole three bases against the Rambelles in game one on Saturday to set a new TWU and LSC single-season record with 74 stolen bases. Vrazel broke the previous record of 71 set in 1999 by Pioneers Cathy Jacobson. She drove in the first run on Friday to ignite the Pioneers’ offense for a come from behind, 5-4, win. She leads the league in batting average (.522), on base percentage (.598), runs (20), triples (3) and stolen bases (40-for-41) in South Division games. Vrazel also leads the country (DI, II, III and NAIA) in steals.
SOUTH PITCHER
Kaylee Davis, Texas Woman’s University, FR, P, Carthage, Texas, Carthage HS
With the Pioneers needing at least two wins for the final spot in the LSC Tournament, Davis delivered with two wins against #13 Angelo State. She pitched a complete game and struck out six batters in the first game of the series on Friday to set the tone. Needing a win in the final game on Saturday, Davis started in the circle and pitched 4.2 innings for the win. She allowed just two runs while striking out three. In the last two weeks with the playoffs on the line she posted a 4-1 record with 2.56 ERA and 22 strikeouts.
