The Lone Star Conference begins divisional play this week as teams compete for a spot in the LSC Basketball Championship to be held March 2-6 in Bartlesville, Okla. On the men’s side, West Texas A&M remains undefeated at 13-0, and plays at Incarnate Word on Wednesday in a match-up of two of the top South teams.
The LSC men have a 123-80 overall record so far this season, including a 67-32 mark in the South Division and 56-48 in the North. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 36-20 record over its North opponents including a flawless 7-0 record by West Texas A&M. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 25-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 100-99 overall, with a 39-58 mark in the South and 61-41 in the North this season. In league crossover play the North has the advantage, 38-26, including a perfect 8-0 mark by Northeastern State over the South teams. The women’s teams are currently 18-22 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 4-2 against the MIAA in the NCAA South Central Region.

NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE

Williams led UCO to a 3-0 record in its return to action after a 10-day holiday break, averaging 23.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals a game while shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from 3-point range. The senior guard had 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a 93-72 rout of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Dec. 30 before also sparking UCO to back-to-back league crossover wins. Williams had 23 points while hitting 6-of-8 3-point tries in a 60-57 victory over Tarleton State and then had a game-high 24 points and a career-best 15 rebounds in a 68-61 win over No. 21-ranked Midwestern State.
NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jarrod McDaniel, University of Central Oklahoma, JR, Guard, Midwest City, Okla., Midwest City HS
McDaniel played a key defensive role as UCO resumed the 2010-11 season with three straight wins. The junior guard averaged just 3.3 points a game, but handed out 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals a contest as the Bronchos beat Arkansas-Fort Smith, Tarleton State and Midwestern State. McDaniel had five assists and three steals in a 93-72 rout of UA-FS, five assists and three steals in a 60-57 win over Tarleton and seven points, one assist and one steal in a 68-61 victory over No. 21 MSU. McDaniel led the defensive effort that held MSU star and league scoring leader Chris Hagan to 4-of-11 shooting from the field in an 18-point outing and he also made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:36 to help UCO hold on.
SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Ridge McKeither, Angelo State University, SR, Forward, Danville, Va., George Washington HS
McKeither has been among the best in the Lone Star Conference in scoring and rebounding and continued that trend last week. The senior from Danville, Va., posted three 20-point efforts in the last four contests and has nine games with 20 or more points this season. McKeither poured in 27 points in ASU’s road loss to Texas-Permian Basin to tie his season and ASU career-high. He has eight double-doubles this season, including two in the last four games. McKeither scored 14 of ASU’s first 16 points against Southwestern Oklahoma before sitting the rest of the first half with foul trouble. He still finished that contest with 23 points while leading ASU to a 62-38 road win.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Wes Dipprey, Tarleton State University, JR, Center, Shallowater, Texas, Shallowater HS
Dipprey led the Texans in rebounding with 6.0 rebounds per game during the 3-1 stretch for Tarleton. He led the team with eight rebounds against Texas A&M-Commerce and nine at Central Oklahoma. He also averaged 8.3 points per game for the Texans. Out of his 24 rebounds, Dipprey had 16 defensive boards for the Texans, including eight at Central Oklahoma and was a big part of the Texan comeback that fell just short. Tarleton is the No. 1 ranked defense in the country, and Dipprey helped the Texans hold the opponents to a .380 shooting percentage and a 56.5 points per game average.
NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Jasmine Webb, Northeastern State University, SR, Center, Owasso, Okla., Owasso HS
Webb averaged another double-double this week to propel Northeastern State to a 2-1 week. The Owasso senior also became only the fourth player in NSU women’s basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau, a feat achieved with her 19-point performance at Oral Roberts on Jan. 3. She now has 1,033 points for her career. For the week, Webb averaged 16.3 points and 10.7 rebounds, connecting on .677 from the field (21-of-31). She had two double-doubles, 19 points & 15 rebounds versus ORU and 12 points & 12 rebounds in NSU’s win over Tarleton State. The 7th-ranked RiverHawks lost at NCAA Division I ORU (83-57) before winning two LSC crossover games at home against Midwestern State (82-77 in 2OT) and Tarleton (68-54). NSU is 11-1 on the year.
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jourdan Clark, East Central University, SO, Guard, Midwest City, Okla., Carl Albert HS
Clark averaged 5.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 2.3 assists as ECU went 3-0 in games last week. She hustled for a total of 17 rebounds in the three games, including 15 on the defensive end. She recorded three of her five steals in the Lady Tigers’ 76-64 home victory over West Texas A&M. She scored in double figures in all three games, including 15 against WT. Her best rebounding effort was seven, all off the defensive glass, against ENMU.

Camille Perkins, Angelo State University, SR, Guard, Groesbeck, Texas, Groesbeck HS
Perkins seems to have found her offensive groove as the senior guard tallied a season-best 29 points in the Rambelles’ 60-59 victory at Southwestern Oklahoma. Her 29-point performance came on the heels of a 25-point effort in a 66-34 win over Cameron in Lawton, Okla., two days prior. The Groesbeck, Texas, native averaged 22.0 points per game in the last three games for the Belles helping them to a 2-1 mark. Perkins continues to pace the Belles despite their many injuries. As the only senior on the squad, Perkins has done an outstanding job in her leading role while maintaining impressive numbers and leading the team in points (181), points per game (15.1), steals (16) and is tied for the lead in assists (30).
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Ifunayna Mora, University of the Incarnate Word, FR, Forward, Grande Prairie, Texas, Arlington Bowie HS
Mora battled her way to nine rebounds and 12 points per game in four contests for Incarnate Word. Her efforts - including eight steals, two blocks and five assists from her spot in the paint for the Cardinals - were key in UIW taking 3-of-4 contests against regional opponents.

RICHARDSON, Texas (Jan. 10) – Central Oklahoma swept Lone Star Conference North Division Player of the Week accolades Monday, with Dauntae Williams taking the offensive award for the fourth consecutive time and Jarrod McDaniel claiming the defensive honor.
Williams led the No. 18-ranked Bronchos to a 3-0 record in their return to action after a 10-day break, averaging 23.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals a game while shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from 3-point range.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard from Missouri City, Texas had 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a 93-72 romp over Arkansas-Fort Smith, 23 points with six 3-pointers in a 60-57 win over Tarleton State and 24 points along with a career-high 15 rebounds in a 68-61 victory over No. 21 Midwestern State.
UCO players have taken the North Division offensive award all seven times this season, with Williams winning in five times.
McDaniel keyed the Bronchos' defensive efforts in their three wins while averaging 3.8 assists, 3.3 points and 2.3 steals a game.
The 5-10 junior guard had five assists and three steals in the UA-Fort Smith rout, five assists and three steals against Tarleton and seven points, one assist and one steal against the Mustangs. McDaniel helped hold MSU star and league scoring leader Chris Hagan to 4-of-11 shooting from the field in an 18-point outing – six points below his average – and he also made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:36 to help seal the win.
UCO, 14-2 on the year, begins its quest for a fourth straight LSC North Division title Wednesday at Southwestern Oklahoma. The Bronchos return home Saturday to host Cameron at 7 p.m.
