Signing Day Press Conference

Full Release with Student-Athlete Bios

CANYON, Texas – Fresh off one its highest finish in school history, at No.4 in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Poll, West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel announced the 2013 high school recruiting class, which includes the signing of 37 student-athletes to play for the Buffaloes this fall.  Overall, the Buffs added 27 players on offense and 10 defensive players.

“The 2012 deep playoff run gave us lots of momentum going into 2013 and the recruiting efforts by our coaching staff,” Carthel said.

The Buffaloes are coming off of a 12-3 season and their first berth in the NCAA Semifinals along with a share of their fifth Lone Star Conference championship.  WT finished fourth in the final American Football Coaches' Association poll.

“We were able to put together another quality group of student-athletes in this signing class,” Carthel added.  “Most of these athletes will redshirt next fall and be ready to get on the field in 2014.  The Buffs will be losing over 30 seniors next season and there will be multiple spots open on the roster for this group of talented athletes.”

WT won road games in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history at then-No. 20 Chadron State, at then No. 4 Ashland University and at then-No. 1 Colorado State-Pueblo, before falling at No. 2 Winston-Salem State in the National Semifinal.  WT improved to 6-6 all-time in school history in the NCAA Tournament all under Carthel.

The Buffaloes open the 2013 schedule Saturday, Sept. 7 at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. The rest of the schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
