LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Nine of 16 teams set for Allen
The Lone Star Conference basketball season is down to the final two weeks of play. At this point, five men’s - Tarleton State, Midwestern State, Cameron, Incarnate Word and West Texas A&M - and four women’s teams - Tarleton, MSU, WT and CU - have clinched a berth in the championship to be played Feb. 29 - March 4 in Allen, Texas.
On the men’s side, MSU topped Tarleton in three overtimes to give the Texans two conference losses and move into a tie atop the standings.
Tarleton dropped its first league game to Texas Woman’s and then defeated MSU to move to 15-1 in LSC play on the women’s side.
The conference’s agreement with Fox Sports Southwest includes Saturday’s doubleheader between Incarnate Word and Angelo State starting at 5:30 p.m. The games will be streamed live on FoxSportsSouthwest.com and are available to fans free of charge. The Cardinals and Rams/Rambelles, played Jan. 7 in San Antonio, Texas, with the UIW men and ASU women prevailing.
The LSC men have a 137-95 overall record so far this season, with Tarleton having only two losses. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 29-14 overall including 17-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 8-1 opposed to the Great American Conference and 4-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 124-123 overall, with MSU at 14-4 with the overall best record. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 27-19 overall including 17-11 combined versus Heartland teams, 9-5 opposed to the Great American and 1-3 against the MIAA.
NCAA BASKETBALL STATISTICS (through games 02/12)

- Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Ashton Brown is shooting 96.8 percent from the free throw line (120-124), which leads the nation.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Reggie Nelson, Eastern New Mexico University, SR, Guard, Tyler, Texas, John Tyler HS/Tyler Junior College
Nelson turned in a stellar week for the Greyhounds and paced the team with 26.5 points per game and a .500 shooting percentage from the floor. At Abilene Christian, his 35 points tied the Lone Star Conference season-high and represented the most points in a game for a Greyhound in over a decade. Nelson also grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists, shot 70 percent from three-point range and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. At Angelo State, he scored 18 points and connected on 80 percent from the charity stripe.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Keonte’ Logan, Midwestern State University, SR, Guard, Wichita Falls, Texas, Wichita Falls HS
Logan keyed a special defensive week for the Mustangs in wins over Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 5 Tarleton State. The tough-minded senior from Wichita Falls led a defense which limited opponents to a 34.1 field goal percentage including a dismal 7-for-47 showing from the arc as MSU held teams to a 59.3 scoring average even with Monday’s triple OT win over the Texans. Logan, who had three steals and a block, also shot lights out on the offensive end of the floor where he was 7-of-9 from the field including a 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range to average 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds over the three-game stretch hitting a pair of crucial 3-pointers late in regulation and in the first overtime against Tarleton. Logan finished with three-game averages of 8.0 points, 5.7 assists and 5.0 rebounds a game for the week. The Mustangs have ridden their latest five-game winning streak to a school best 21-2 record through 23 games.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Ashley Leven, West Texas A&M University, SR, Forward, Amarillo, Texas, Amarillo HS
Leven had the best two-game span of her career this last week, averaging 15.5 points a game while posting a career-tying 16 points in WT’s win over ACU on Wednesday and then pouring in another 15 points at ASU on Saturday. With the Lady Buffs down 51-50, the senior knocked down a go-ahead turn-around jumper with just two seconds left on the shot clock and 18.1 seconds remaining in regulation on Saturday, and the Lady Buffs would then go on to win the game, defeating the Rambelles 54-53 - on the road at Stephens Arena. The Amarillo native shot better than 58 percent from the field and went 3-of-5 from the charity stripe this week. She also managed to pull down a team-high 8.5 rebounds in the last two games, with eight of her boards coming on the offensive side of the court.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jessica Hanna, Texas Woman’s University, SR, Guard, China Spring, Texas, China Spring HS
Hanna helped the Pioneers hold the two opponents to 34.2 percent shooting and 48.5 points per game. She averaged 11.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals. Hanna led the game with nine rebounds in a win against Tarleton State. She also went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line against the TexAnns and played all 40 minutes.
