LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Six teams have clinched championship berth - LSC Office
The Lone Star Conference basketball season has hit the home stretch, with only 23 days until the LSC Championship tips off.  At this point, four men’s - Tarleton State, Midwestern State, Cameron and Incarnate Word - and two women’s teams - Tarleton and MSU - have clinched a berth in the tournament to be played Feb. 29 - March 4 in Allen, Texas.
Incarnate Word handed Tarleton its first conference setback on the men’s side, to end the Texans 17-game winning streak.  Tarleton has just a half-game advantage over MSU for the men’s title, with the two teams playing for the second time Feb. 13 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
On the women’s side, Tarleton posted two more wins last week to remain unbeaten at 14-0 in LSC games and extend its win streak to 15 games.

The conference’s agreement with Fox Sports Southwest includes Monday’s doubleheader between Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M-Commerce starting at 6 p.m.  The games will be streamed live on FoxSportsSouthwest.com and are available to fans free of charge.  The Javelinas and Lions played their first round of games in Kingsville, Texas, last Saturday (Feb. 4), with the home team winning both including a three-overtime men’s affair.
The LSC men have a 125-85 overall record so far this season, with Tarleton having just one loss.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 29-14 overall including 17-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 8-1 opposed to the Great American Conference and 4-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

The LSC women are 112-111 overall, with MSU at 14-4 with the overall best record. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 27-19 overall including 17-11 combined versus Heartland teams, 9-5 opposed to the Great American and 1-3 against the MIAA.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Chris Johnson, University of the Incarnate Word, SR, Forward, San Antonio, Brackenridge
In a week when UIW went 2-0 including a win over previously undefeated Tarleton State and clinched a berth in the LSC Championship, Johnson was the leader on the offensive end. He posted double figure points in both games and was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points on 9-12 shooting against Tarleton. He averaged 6.0 rebounds for the week and also had four steals.

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Marshall Bonds III, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, JR, Forward, Little Rock, AR, Mills
Bonds had an unbelievable defensive game in the team’s 104-94 triple overtime victory over A&M-Commerce on Saturday. He tied a school record with six blocks while adding three steals, 10 points and seven rebounds in the must-win game. He added another block in the team’s 63-52 loss at #3 Tarleton State on Wednesday.

WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Savannah Carver, Midwestern State University, SR, Guard, Amarillo, Texas, Canyon Randall
Carver led the Mustangs in two league victories to qualify MSU for the LSC Championship for the first time in nine years. She scored 24 points in the Mustangs 90-82 win at Abilene Christian and followed it with 20 points in MSU’s 83-70 triumph over Angelo State. For the week Carver shot 50.0 from the floor (14-28), 41.7 percent from the 3-point arc (5-12) and 91.7 percent from the foul line (11-12). She added four rebounds (2.0 per game), four steals (2.0 per game) and one assist. Carver has four 20-plus scoring efforts in the last five games and has moved onto MSU’s top 20 all-time scoring list with 891 career points. She’s also moved into the top 10 at MSU all-time with her 90 3-point field goals.

WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Sabelle Diata, Cameron University, SR, Forward, Dakar, Senegal
Diata has been invaluable for Cameron throughout the season, but the effort she displayed in the week’s contests against conference rivals Angelo State and Abilene Christian was unmatched. The CU senior pulled down an impressive 26 rebounds in the two match-ups and added an assist, steal and four blocks. Her offensive prowess was just as outstanding as she came away with a total of 32 points for the week.
