Lone Star Conference action continued last week with Cameron and Tarleton State sweeping their four-game series, while Southeastern Oklahoma and Northeastern State each won three of four games.
LSC Baseball teams are 147-134 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 7-3 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 5-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Teams are competing for one of six spots in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 1-2-3-4.
Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
Ethan Wagner, Eastern New Mexico, Sr., RF/DH, San Antonio, Texas/Cisco JC/Churchull HS
Wagner batted .619 for the week with a home run, three doubles and six runs batted in as the Hounds defeated University of the Southwest and split a four-game series against Angelo State. Against the Rams, he hit .706, striking out just twice in 17 at bats and hit a perfect five-for-five with runners in scoring position. In the third game of the series, he batted three-for-three with a home run, a double and three runs batted in over the final three innings as ENMU rallied from an eight-run deficit for a 14-10 win.
Casey Gibson, Southeastern Oklahoma, Sr., OF, McAlester, Okla./McAlester HS
Gibson was an integral part of Southeastern’s series victory over the-No. 7 Abilene Christian, helping the Storm to a 3-2 record overall on the week. He posted a .471 average for the week, while also turning in a .550 on-base percentage and slugging .882. He drove in seven runs and had a double and a pair of home runs. One of his homers was a game-tying shot in the ninth inning that allowed SE to earn the come-from-behind win in the series finale against ACU. His first homer of the weekend was a go-ahead, two-run shot that put SE up 11-10 in the series’ second game. He also scored five runs while on defense he threw out one runner at home plate and played an error-free right field.
PITCHER
Phillip Clinard, Angelo State, Jr., Pitcher, Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall
Clinard had his strongest outing of the season in the nightcap Friday against Eastern New Mexico. The 6-3 righthander earned his second-straight victory going five innings and surrendering one unearned run while scattering five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Of the five hits he allowed, only one was for extra bases as he held the Greyhounds to a .250 batting average.
Heath Wyatt, Southeastern Oklahoma, Jr., P, Searcy, Ark./Searcy HS
Wyatt turned in another three-appearance weekend, earning part of the decision in all three Southeastern victories over Abilene Christian. He pitched a pair of multi-inning outing on day one, tossing 5.1 innings combined en route to a pair of saves. Wyatt came back on the next day and turned in his longest outing of the year, tossing 6.2 innings and picking up his fifth win of the season. On the weekend he finished with 12.0 innings pitched and allowed five runs on 14 hits, but did strike out seven hitters and did not surrender a walk. He also combined with Jimmy Johnson on his second shutout victory of the season in the series opener against the Wildcats.
