Buffs battle Kingsville in key LSC road series - Lance Lahnert, Amarillo Globe News
With six Lone Star Conference three-game series remaining on the West Texas A&M baseball menu, it’s far too early for the Buffs to gaze hungrily at the dessert tray. But it’s not too early for WT to begin ordering appetizers in preparation for the main course: earning an LSC tournament berth in May. The Buffs can take their first bites in a three-game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville today and Saturday in Kingsville.
Game 1 is set for 6 tonight, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. WT (18-8 overall) is seventh in the 13-team LSC race at 9-6. Kingsville (13-11) is eighth at 10-8. The top six teams qualify for the LSC tourney May 7-10 in Abilene.
“Kingsville is obviously another tough team,” said WT coach Matt Vanderburg, whose team lost to nonconference foe Wayland Baptist, 6-2, on Tuesday. “This is the toughest road trip we have all year. We have to be mentally prepared just for that road trip.”

West Texas A&M's LeComte could be known as 'The Boerne Basher' - Terrence Hunley, Amarillo Globe News
The junior center fielder for West Texas A&M softball has left her mark on the Lone Star Conference as well as Lady Buff Yard.
Kim LeComte, who was an all-state high school player at Boerne, has made a habit of smacking softballs over the fence - and into scoreboards - and has done so at such a rate to break the LSC record for career home runs when she hit her 40th against Abilene Christian last week. She is up to 41, including 10 this season.
"It's really one of my biggest accomplishments, honestly," said LeComte, who swings a 33-inch, 25-ounce bat. "I had no idea I was getting so close. I wasn't even thinking about it. When (WT coach Kevin Blaskowski) told me, I was really excited."

ASU TRACK: Older, wiser - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State University sophomores Junior Carrasco and Shane Holmes competed in the decathlon for the first time at last year's ASU spring break Multi-Events meet.
Neither would say it was much of a memorable experience. However, both are back this year with a season's worth of experience under their belt, and it showed Thursday during the first day of this year's spring break Multi-Events meet at the LeGrand Sports Complex.
One was mostly pleased with his performance in the first decathlon of the season, while the other thought he could have done better.
Holmes is in sixth place in the Blue Division of the decathlon, while Carrasco is 10th. A third ASU entry, freshman Donald McCarthy, is eighth.

2011 UIW FOOTBALL SCHEDULE SET

A pair of home games is at the top of the 2011 Incarnate Word football schedule before the Cardinals step up to Division I in the third week according to the lineup announced by the University.
“It is tough,” Coach Mike Santiago simply said about the 10-game schedule. “This is going to be really challenging,” he continued, “but as we said before we won’t shy away from a challenge.”
The Cardinals open their third year of football with a non-conference game against East Central Oklahoma, the team which finished second last fall in the old Lone Star Conference North Division. That opener is set for September 3 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
Week two will give UIW its first taste of a consolidated, and perhaps tougher, Lone Star Conference. Eastern New Mexico comes to San Antonio for a September 9 date with Incarnate Word.
Next up for the Cardinals is the trip on September 17 to engage its first-ever Division I opponent. UIW will be at Lamar University which plays in the Southland Conference. “We hope Lamar and East Central will prepare us for the tough Lone Star schedule,” Santiago said.
If that challenge weren’t enough by itself then the next week, September 24, the Cardinals continue their second year of Lone Star league play with a trip to West Texas A&M.
With the departure of five Oklahoma schools the 2011 version of the league will be one overall division. That means the seven members of last year’s South Division return intact to be joined by the remaining two from the north, Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M-Commerce.
In 2010 those eight upcoming UIW opponents had a cumulative mark of 50-32 including an astounding 42-18 by the returning South teams. Three of the South teams—Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, West Texas A&M--a year ago went to the Division II national playoffs while a fourth—Midwestern State—played in the Kanza Bowl.
In addition to the two opening games at home the Cardinals at Benson Stadium will entertain Midwestern State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State.

ACU golfer Carpenter enjoys first round at PGA event despite tough day on Bay Hill course - Joey Richards, Abilene Reporter News
ORLANDO, Fla. — Forget that Alex Carpenter shot a 12-over-par 82 during the first round of his first PGA Tour event Thursday — good for next to last at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Abilene Christian University sophomore still had the experience of a lifetime at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.
After playing practice rounds with Bubba Watson, Stephen Ames and Rickie Fowler, last year's PGA Tour rookie of the year, earlier in the week, Carpenter found himself practicing on the putting green Thursday morning talking to Phil Mickelson, who congratulated him for winning the Phil Mickelson Award — given to the best freshman golfer in NCAA Division II — last year.
"It's just kind of surreal," Carpenter said. "You're hitting on the putting green and Tiger Woods rolls up right behind you and takes over your hole. You're like, 'Wow.' It's a surreal experience to see guys you've been watching on TV for the last 10 years right up there next to you, putting on the same hole. It's an experience I'll never forget."
