LSC mulls future as ACU, UIW seek move to DI, Southland
After five Oklahoma schools departed the Lone Star Conference following the 2010-11 season, LSC officials thought they had a core group of 11 schools dedicated to the NCAA Division II conference. That didn't turn out to be true.
Two schools — Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word — are seeking admission into the Southland Conference, a Division I conference that plays football in the Football Championship Subdivision. One or both schools could be invited to join the conference following visits by the SLC presidents to each campus later this summer. The University of New Orleans, currently a Division I independent, also is in the mix to join the SLC.
LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon said league officials were surprised when both ACU and UIW announced interest in making the jump to Division I and the SLC. Wagnon thought both schools were committed to the league, after five Oklahoma schools announced they were leaving after the 2010-11 season.
He said the conference had no idea ACU was seeking DI membership until rumors started circulating about such a move when the school hired Grant McCasland as its men's basketball coach in late March of 2011.
"Yeah, initially it surprised us," Wagnon said, "because of what we had gone through with our membership change. We really felt like we emerged from there with 11 schools that all were buying into the same philosophy and wanting to march down the same path as a conference. To have one of those 11 schools to be looking at other options so quickly after that group decision — yeah, that was a little shocking."

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville national search for a new
Director of Athletics has been whittled down to five candidates who will each be
brought on campus in the next two weeks.
Brian DeAngelis is the current Director of Athletics at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, an NCAA Division II program with 13 sports. In his five year tenure, DeAngelis has overseen the addition of two female sports – volleyball and golf – and has completely overhauled the internal and external operations of the department in order for it to run more effectively and efficiently. He authored the department’s first student-athlete handbook, established a fifth-year scholarship program, instituted an academic success plan, improved communication between coaches and faculty, and helped establish university policies regarding student-athletes and procedures for formally evaluating coaches. In 2007, he initiated the Tiger Club that has become a major fund-raising mechanism for the athletic department. Prior to East Central, DeAngelis worked for four years at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a variety of roles including Associate Athletic Director, Senior Associate Athletic Director and Interim Athletic Director. He was the Assistant Athletic Director and Head Cross Country Coach at Delta State University for four years. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Florida Southern College and his M.B.A. with a concentration in Management from Delta State.
Derrick Magee is the current Senior Associate Athletic Director of Business Affairs at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. He is responsible for the overall management of the daily business operations of the athletic department and the direct supervision of marketing, ticket operations, sports information, business/finance, equipment room, human resources and sport oversight. ASU has 18 varsity sports and competes in NCAA Division I. He assisted with the development and construction of the $65 million football stadium project and is the athletic department’s direct contact with the department marketing group used to analyze sponsorship and corporate opportunities. Prior to joining ASU, he was the Associate Athletic Director and Chief Business Officer at the University of Cincinnati from 2008-10. He was the Assistant Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs at University of the Pacific for 2006-08. His other collegiate experience includes assistant men’s basketball coach and Athletic Business Manager at Florida A&M. He earned his Bachelor Science degree in Physical Education and Health from Florida A&M University. He has a Master of Business Administration degree from California State University, Stanislaus and is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education degree from University of the Pacific.
C. Joseph “Chip” Smith most recently served as the Athletic Director at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina from 2004-11. Smith oversaw a number of outstanding accomplishments both on and off the field for the Catamounts, an NCAA Division I program with 16 sports, during his tenure. Under his direction, Western Carolina student-athletes earned a Southern Conference best 118 all-conference honors on the field and accumulated over 1,500 community service hours off the field with an average G.P.A. of 3.01. He began his collegiate athletic administration career at UNC Charlotte in 1984 as a business and ticket manager and worked his way up to assistant athletic director. He joined VMI in 1991 as an assistant athletic director and was later promoted to associate athletic director. He moved to Eastern Kentucky in 1999 and became the athletic director in 2001. In 2002, he took over the athletic director position at Morehead State where he served until 2004. He earned his undergraduate degree in Education and Master’s degree in Athletic Administration from University of North Carolina.
Tom Seitz most recently served as the Athletic Director at California State University San Marcos, an NAIA program with 13 sports, for three years. During his tenure he was able to pass an Athletic Fee Referendum that allowed CSUSM to add men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and cheer and dance teams, as well as provide more scholarships to student-athletes in all sports. He took the athletic department through the application steps to apply for membership in NCAA Division II that will take place within the next year. Previously, Seitz served as the director of athletics for Jacksonville State University in Alabama and Jacksonville University in Florida. At Jacksonville State, he provided the steady leadership that moved their NCAA Division II program to a successful Division I program. At Jacksonville University he grew the athletic program from 14 sports and 200 student-athletes to 20 sports and over 400 student-athletes. He has over 25 years experience as a student-athlete, coach and administrator. Seitz holds a Bachelor's degree from Oglethorpe University and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the Citadel.
Dennis Toney is currently the Director of Athletic Development at University of Alabama in Huntsville. He assumed the responsibility for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individuals and corporations that provide private support for intercollegiate athletics. He collaborated with the University Advancement office, director of athletics and UAH sports programs to ensure maximum efficiency in fundraising efforts. He has worked over 20 years in collegiate athletic departments in a variety of roles. He began his career at University of South Carolina in 1983 as an administrative intern and worked his way up to Director of Ticket Operations by 1988 where he remained until 1992. After working at Wachovia Bank as a financial consultant for four years he took a job as an Assistant Athletic Director at University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 1996-99. He followed that with a stint as an Associate Director of Athletics for Administration at VMI from 1999-2005. He was the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama, an NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference program with 10 sports. He served in that role from 2005-07. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bridgewater College, a Master’s in Education from University of Virginia and a Master’s in Science in Sports Administration and Facility Management from Ohio University.
