Game Recaps

WT 48-21 over Western State
West Texas A&M senior quarterback Dustin Vaughan likes playing Western State Colorado University.  Saturday, he went 37 of 57 for a career-high 470 yards and a career-high six touchdowns as the No. 3-ranked Buffaloes won 48-21 in Gunnison, Colo.

TAMK 21-14 over Central Washington
Texas A&M-Kingsville head coach David Calloway called for a trick play late in the fourth quarter and senior kicker Matt Stoll made his coach look like a genius in his head coaching debut running 17 yards on a fake field goal attempt for the game-winning touchdown with 6:48 remaining in a 21-14 victory over Central Washington on Saturday.

TAMC 51-6 over Sul Ross State
The Colby Carthel era got off to an emphatic start as A&M-Commerce dominated Sul Ross State from the opening whistle, rolling the Lobos in a 51-6 season-opening victory at Memorial Stadium.

ASU 38-26 over Black Hills State
Jermie Calhoun ran for a career high 140 yards and scored two touchdowns to help lead Angelo State to a 38-26 season-opening win over Black Hills State on Thursday at San Angelo Stadium.

ENMU falls to New Mexico Highlands 31-28
New Mexico Highlands (1-0) edged the Eastern New Mexico University football team (0-1) in a thrilling season opener for both teams, by a score of 31-28, Saturday night at Greyhound Stadium. Darrelyn McCloud's 33-yard interception in the third quarter marked the first time an ENMU player scored defensively, since Jayson Serda, against Incarnate Word, last season.

LSC Scoop Players of the Week
Offense - Dustin Vaughan, West Texas A&M - With his 470 yard, 6 TD, 0 Int. season-opener, Vaughan gets a good start on topping the LSC career passing charts.

Defense - Lamont Hills, Texas A&M-Kingsville - Hills was enjoying a good game in his first start for the Javelinas, but made the defensive play of the game as he recovered a Central Washington fumble on the Javelina 2 yard line with under 10 seconds to play, preserving a 21-14 win on the road.

Special Teams - Matt Stoll, Texas A&M-Kingsville - Stoll was 3-3 on PATs, but made his biggest contribution without kicking the ball.  With the score tied at 14 midway through the fourth quarter, the Javelinas called for a fake field goal.  Stoll was unable to find an open receiver, and took off with the ball, outrunning the CWU defenders and scoring the eventual winning touchdown.

  4. Texas A&M-Kingsville - Not pretty, but a long distance road win is a good sign.
  5. Angelo State - Strong,strong effort by the running game.
  6. Texas A&M-Commerce - Not a stern test, but this score would have been much closer last year.
  7. Eastern New Mexico - Never gave up and almost pulled off the comeback upset.
