When University of Central Oklahoma president Roger Webb started his search for an athletic director five weeks ago, he sifted through 18 formal applications and took phone calls from 20 to 30 more interested parties.
Webb soon pared his list to three candidates, and on Wednesday he introduced his choice as the seventh athletic director in UCO's 119-year history: Joe Muller, a Stillwater native with bachelor's and master's degrees from Oklahoma State.
"Three people quickly rose to the top, and though it was a difficult decision, I'm totally satisfied with my decision,” Webb said.
Muller, too. He often used words such as "thrilled” and "grateful” and "extraordinary” and "great” and "thrilled” while talking to the media Wednesday.
"I'm thankful and I'm honored to have this opportunity at the University of Central Oklahoma,” Muller said. "It's very exciting for me. I am convinced this is a very special place with special people... I am committed to growing this athletic department into a model program for college athletics.”
