Hounds seek improvement
PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds are no longer a former option offense switching to the spread. As coach Mark Ribaudo says, they’re a spread offense trying to compete in the Lone Star Conference.
“It’s not a transition any more,” said Ribaudo, set to enter his fifth year at the helm. “The offense is in, we’re just trying to get better at it. We’re in step two. We’ve run it for a year, we’ve done film study.”
Step two starts Monday with spring football practice. Weather permitting, the Hounds will have 3 p.m. practices four days a week (taking Wednesdays off) and scrimmage at 9 a.m. on both April 11 and 18 at Greyhound Stadium.
The three-week season concludes with the team’s 3 p.m. Green/Silver scrimmage April 25.
Thomsen pleased with spring
ABILENE -- For the first time since 2004, the ACU Wildcats lined up at Shotwell Stadium without either Billy Malone, Bernard Scott or Johnny Knox wearing the Purple and White when they wrapped up spring drills Saturday morning.
And while the 2009 Wildcats will undoubtedly look much different than the version that took the field for the controlled scrimmage, ACU head coach Chris Thomsen was able to get a look at two of the players vying to replace Malone as the Wildcats' signal-caller.
Harrell, who will be a junior in the fall, completed 7 of 15 passes for 76 yards and one interception. Gale, a redshirt freshman in the fall, completed 10 of 22 passes for 124 yards and the only two touchdown passes in the scrimmage.
Gale had touchdown passes of 56 yards to Colby Freytag and 23 yards to J.T; Aspra for the only two scores of the day.
Both Harrell and Gale are chasing returning backup Zach Stewart, who did not participate in spring drills after undergoing post-season shoulder surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder. He is expected to be ready to start throwing in a few weeks and he should enter two-a-days in August as the starter.
Stewart has something on his side that neither Harrell nor Gale have on their side and that's history. Last fall, Stewart kept ACU's perfect season alive as he started and won games against Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville after Malone was sidelined with a broken thumb on his throwing hand. In the win over Kingsville, Stewart threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns to lead ACU to a 42-17 victory.
Spring Game: Eskridge strikes for four touchdowns to lead Gold to 33-21 win
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Zack Eskridge passed for 269 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Gold to a 33-21 win over Maroon in Midwestern State's Annual Maroon/Gold Spring Game Saturday afternoon at the MSU Practice Fields.
Eskridge, who connected on his first 11 passes and ended the game 16-of-20, hit for four touchdowns including a 21-yard strike to Sasan Faradineh, a 58-yard screen to Ethan Rosales, a 33-yard hookup with Sheldon Galloway and a 28-yard toss to Andy Tanner.
Maroon Defeats White, 14-7, in Spring Game
CANYON, Texas - Playing in conditions not normally associated with football, the West Texas A&M Maroon squad earned a 14-7 victory over the White team Saturday afternoon in the annual Maroon-White game at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
Despite a Dust Storm Warning being issued by the National Weather Service, with gusts upward of 55 mph and visibility extremely limited, an estimated crowd of 500 was on hand to see the Buffaloes close out their spring drills.
A pair of third-quarter interception returns for touchdown, one a 23-yarder by Mark Ford, the second, a 32-yard TD return by Anthony Scott, coming minutes later, proved to be enough points to secure a Maroon squad victory.
“Days like this are when the defense need to step up and make some plays,” said WT defensive coordinator Colby Carthel. “The Maroon team’s defense did just that.”
ECU opens spring football drills
ADA – East Central University launched spring football drills on Monday and will conduct 14 workouts, leading up to the spring game on April 25 at 2 p.m. at Norris Field.
The Tigers will practice from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the first three weeks, before working out on Monday, April 20th, and Wednesday, April 22nd, prior to the spring game.
Head coach Tim McCarty also announced the signings of 10 more players, including six junior college players from the state of California, in addition to the 22 freshmen inked on national signing day on Feb. 4.
“I felt like we addressed some more needs of the team with these signings,” said McCarty, who is preparing to begin his second stint as head coach of the Tigers this fall.
Schmitt's HR in 10th lifts 'Cats by Rams
Jordan Schmitt hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning to lift the Abilene Christian University Wildcats to an 8-6 win over Angelo State.
Rams drop series finale to Wildcats
The No. 17 Angelo State University baseball team let another victory slip away Sunday. The Rams took a 6-2 lead into the eighth inning against No. 10 Abilene Christian but allowed the Wildcats to score two runs each in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings to win the finale of their four-game Lone Star Conference series 8-6 Sunday at Foster Field.
ACU ended up taking three of four from the Rams in the set. The Wildcats' three wins were all decided by two runs. ASU won the other game 23-6.
