Need Help:
Defensive Line - Todd Zoglmann (1st LSC South), Kellen Belcher (HM LSC South) and Jarrell Warren (HM LSC South) were all seniors last year. There is experience returning including Stephen Turner who had 5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. Five of the top 8 returnees will be seniors this fall, so the Mustangs might want to add some bodies for the future.
Linebackers - Another spot where MSU lost some talented players. Jacob Martin and Darius Borrters were both honorable mention LSC South honorees last fall. Emmanuel Bagley and Brandon Onu return, but both will be seniors.
Need Depth:
Defensive Secondary - Herman Walker (HM LSC South) has exhausted his eligibility, but three starters return - Ryan Craven, Antoine Cumby (HM LSC South) and Michah Hill (HM LSC South), plus two reserves who tallied over 20 tackles. Four of the top six are seniors.
Offensive Line - Eldridge Sims (2nd LSC South) was a senior last year, but three full-time and two part-time starters return, including HM LSC South picks Dillion Sullivan and Lance Calloway. Five of the top six returnees (in starts and games played) are seniors.
Wide Receivers - HM LSC South selection Mookie Davis has moved on. Andy Tanner (HM LSC South) leads a group that returns six players that combined for 92 receptions for 1,021 yds and 14 TDs.
Good Quality/Depth:
Running Back - Leading rusher Marcus Mathis (HM LSC South) returns, as does B J Mathis (no relation, 1st LSC South return specialist). Lester Bush also got some carries as a true freshman last fall.
Quaterback - Zack Eskridge came on strong last year, throwing 14 of his 18 TDs over the last four games (in which the offense averaged 37 points per game). He finished the season ranked fourth in the LSC in passing efficiency, and ranked first in returning QBs. Brad Green backs up Eskridge, and got some game experience last year.
The Mustangs lost some good players last fall and have a lot of quality seniors on this year's roster. They addressed some immediate needs with juco transfers - WR Sheldon Galloway had over 1,000 yds receiving last year, OL Jordan Kulwitzky, DL Chris Shaw, and DB Kirk Risby. From the high school ranks, watch for QB Quinn Rollerson, RB Chauncey Harris, WRs Chad Harrison and Antwone Moore, DLs Tim Kemp and Josh Neal, LB Zach Bracken, and DBs Kerry Nation and Justin Henderson. Overall, they signed 1 QB, 4 RBs, 5 WRs, 6 OLs, 7 DLs, 3 LBs, and 5 DBs.
LSC Ranking - 8
Overall Grade: B
The Mustangs did a nice job with their high school class - some talented players spread across the field. Only four transfers so far - which may mean that some younger players find themselves in the rotation this fall.
