Greyhounds’ Kevin Thompson Drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers
With the 1,454th overall pick in the Major League Baseball entry draft, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected Kevin Thompson (Sr., IF/OF, La Cañada, Calif./La Cañada HS) from the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team. The choice was made in the 48th round and the versatile former Greyhound is listed as a shortstop.
Thompson started 125 games over four seasons for the Hounds and posted a .302 batting average. On March 29, 2011, he hit for the cycle in a win at University of the Southwest with a pair of runs batted in. In the opening game of Thompson’s final doubleheader as a Greyhound, he drove a walk-off single to centerfield, to lift ENMU to a 9-8 win over Northeastern State. Over his career, Thompson played shortstop, third base, left field and designated hitter for the Greyhounds and registered 35 multiple-hit games.
Tampa Bay Rays select Tarleton's Ryan Turner in MLB Draft
New York, N.Y. - The 2011 Major League Baseball draft was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Tarleton junior pitcher Ryan Turner was selected in the 32nd round by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 990th overall pick.
Turner set a Tarleton record with 12 saves this season to go along with a 2.68 ERA and a 5-3 record. The North Richland Hills native also led the Texans with 64 strikeouts and 27 appearances.
At 6'5", the McClennan Community College transfer dominated Lone Star Conference hitting all year, earning first team all-conference honors.
This isn't the first time Turner has had his named called by a major league team however, getting drafted three times before. He was selected in the 22nd round out of high school, the 30th round the following year, the 49th round last season and now in the 30th round.
The last Tarleton baseball player to be selected in the draft was Jay Burcie in 2004 by the Texas Rangers. There have been seven Texans taken in the major league first year player draft in the prorgram's history.
Head coach Bryan Conger would like to have Turner another year, but he is thrilled for the closer.
"We are excited for Ryan and the opportunity he has in front of him," said Conger. "We wish him the best of luck. We are also excited for what this means for the program and its just another positive step forward as we continue to strive to get better."
Wyatt Selected by Cardinals in MLB Draft
Southeastern pitcher Heath Wyatt finally heard his named called when the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 33rd round of the Major League baseball First Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon.
Wyatt joins teammate Justin Miller in getting the call, with Miller being selected in the 30th round by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.
Wyatt, a senior from Searcy, Ark., was a two-time first team All-American for the Savage Storm.
