Angelo State names womens soccer coach

McCorkle Named Women's Soccer Coach

Angelo State University Athletic Director Kathleen Brasfield Tuesday named Travis McCorkle as the new head coach of the ASU women’s soccer team, effective immediately.

A former Rambelles assistant, McCorkle returns to ASU after spending the past five seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico University , a fellow member of the Lone Star Conference. He posted a 40-46-4 record with the Zias after starting the program from scratch in 2003.

During his tenure at ENMU, McCorkle coached 13 All-LSC players and 29 Academic All-LSC honorees. Additionally, his teams were honored with National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards each of his five seasons with the program.

“Travis’ LSC and NCAA Division II experience was very attractive to us,” Brasfield said. “He was a good assistant for ASU when he was here before and we feel he can continue the success of our women’s soccer program and its drive for a conference title.”

McCorkle served as an assistant coach for the Rambelles from 2001-02 under former head coach Tom Brown, who left ASU last month to take a similar position at Sam Houston State University .

“I want to thank President Rallo, Athletic Director Kathleen Brasfield and Assistant Athletic Director James Reid for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the ASU family and San Angelo community,” McCorkle said. “I am very excited about the opportunity to coach at Angelo State . ASU is a great university where success is part of the culture in the classroom and on the field. I absolutely can’t wait to get started.”

In his first head coaching job at ENMU, McCorkle had just six months to put together the inaugural Zias squad that posted a 3-12 record in 2003. Since that time, his teams have gone 37-34-4, including four straight winning seasons, a 10-win season in 2005 and a LSC Tournament appearance in 2006. He also started the ENMU men’s program in 2004, then handed it over to his assistant coach after the first season.

“My wife, Luann, and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in San Angelo and are excited to be returning,” McCorkle said. “I know the current players want to have a strong season and I will do my best to help them achieve that goal. My job, as well as the players’, is to challenge ourselves every day to be the best we can be in the classroom, on the field and in life.”
