Hills leads Tarleton to rout of ACU

Devon Hills poured in 23 points and 11 different Tarleton State (16-3, 4-0) players scored as the Texans made quick work of Abilene Christian (7-12, 0-4) in an 83-63 rout at Wisdom Gym Wednesday night.
Tarleton stayed unbeaten in the South and won for the 11th time in 12 games, thanks largely to a 28-10 surge over the final 10 minutes of the first half and a 10-1 push to begin the second.
The Texans led by as many as 32 points with just under seven minutes remaining. By that time, Hills was already relaxing on the bench and starting point guard Corin Henry was trying to rest after leaving with an injury to his left knee, which he originally hyperextended in practice almost three weeks ago.
"Corin just aggravated it. That's going to happen from time to time until we can get through the season and he has some time to let it heal," Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman said. "He's going to be okay."
Hills buried his first three attempts from outside the arc and had 15 points at halftime. He scored nine during Tarleton's prolonged run to end the first half, including three on a bomb with five seconds left that seemed to put the nails in ACU's coffin.
"Once I hit my first shot I felt like it was going to be a good shooting night for me," Hills said. "I was able to get it going early and that gave me a lot of confidence."
Joining Hills in double figures was Effran Bryant with 14. Jeremiah Wilson netted nine points and grabbed six rebounds while Donta Smith led everyone in boards with 15 while scoring eight points.
Eddie Thompson led ACU with 24 points, 17 of them coming in the final seven minutes when Tarleton was already on cruise control.
The win leaves the Texans one game ahead of second-place Midwestern State entering the most brutal three-game stretch remaining on their schedule. They travel 300 miles south to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday before back-to-back games against Midwestern next week as part of the LSC's "Rivalry Week."
"It's huge to get to 4-0 because the next three games are all going to be big," Hills said. "Texas A&M-Kingsville is going to be tough (on the road) and Midwestern is playing really well."
Reisman, whose club is outscoring South Division opponents by an average of 22.3 points, couldn't agree more.
"It's extemely important," he said of starting South play with four straight wins. "We have a very challenging next week-and-a-half ahead of us. We're going to have to get well, first of all, and just take it one game at a time through this stretch."

There’s no better way to bounce back from a loss than by knocking off your biggest rival the next time you step on the court.
No. 25 Tarleton State (16-3, 3-1) did just that Wednesday night, leaving behind last Saturday’s disappointing road loss to No. 9 West Texas A&M by knocking off Abilene Christian (12-7, 2-2) 70-64 at Wisdom Gym.
The victory is key not only in the Lone Star Conference South Division race, but in the South Central regional rankings as well. The first poll was released Tuesday with Tarleton ranked No. 6 and ACU No. 9.
Shelby Adamson paved the way, cutting the Wildcat defense apart with aggressive drives to the basket She led all scorers with 20 points, including a driving layup to make it 65-57 just before the one minute mark.
ACU scored five of the next six to pullwithin four at 66-62 with 11.61 seconds on the clock, but Sonya Sundberg was fouled immediately after the ensuing inbound pass and drilled both charity shots to make it 68-62. It was 68-64 before Adamson capped her big night with two from the line with less than a second on the clock.
It was nip and tuck the whole way until the TexAnns scored five straight to turn a two-point edge into a 49-42 lead after a Morgan Stehling trey with 12:30 remaining.
The lead eventually grew to 61-50 before Abilene Christian scored a quick five straight to pull within six.
Adamson was joined in double figures by JoAnne Jones (14), Morgan Stehling (13) and Sonya Sundberg (11) for Tarleton. Sundberg also added five assists and Jones led the team with nine rebounds.
The Wildcats were led by Kelsey Darby-Holson with 17 points and Jamie Meyer with 16 and nine boards. Courtney Laing scored 10 and Jody Meyer had eight points and 10 rebounds.
ACU never led after falling behind 24-21 on a Sundberg three-ball at the 7:10 mark of the first. The Wildcats did battle back to tie the game twice early in the second half. There were seven ties in all.

Southwestern Oklahoma received a verbal commitment from Paul Lopez, a quarterback from St Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, California. Lopez chose the Bulldogs over Eastern Washington, Southern Oregon and Humboldt State.
Mishak Rivas (Weslaco HS) is no longer at Texas State and is looking to transfer to Texas A&M-Kingsville in the fall.

ACU sports briefs: Former pitcher Vancil signs with Mariners
Former Abilene Christian pitcher Preston Vancil has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners and has been invited to their minor league spring training camp.
Vancil, 23, was 6-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 66 1/3 innings of work last summer for the Florence (Ky.) Freedom of the independent Frontier League. He joined the team July 17, two months after his ACU career ended when the Wildcats lost in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament.
In 11 starts with the Freedom, Vancil allowed 42 hits, struck out 61 batters and gave up 44 walks, holding opposing batters to a .182 average. Vancil also threw the first no-hitter in franchise history July 26, when he blanked Traverse City, 5-0.
Last season, Vancil was voted a first team American Baseball Coaches’ Association/Rawlings all-region selection. Vancil was only 5-6 but he posted an ERA of 3.54 while giving up just 49 runs (40 earned) in 101 2/3 innings of work. He ranked in the nation’s top 10 in strikeouts with 108.

ASU, MSU top softball preseason polls
Angelo State and Midwestern State were the top choices for the Lone Star Conference softball divisional titles in 2010 as the preseason polls were announced by league officials on Wednesday.
ASU is the favorite in the LSC South Division, while MSU is the frontrunner to win the LSC North Division.
The 2010 season begins February 1st with non-conference action and the LSC has 14 teams competing with seven in each division. In addition to divisional play, the league will hold its annual crossover tournament March 26-27-28 in Durant, Okla. The top four teams in each division will advance to the LSC Championship, May 6-7-8, in Seguin, Texas.
North Division
Midwestern State is the favorite to claim the Lone Star Conference North Division title. The Mustangs received eight first-place votes on the 17 ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives.
MSU, who posted a 31-17 overall and 13-9 league record last season, totaled 99 points in the poll. The Mustangs have won three North Division titles and two conference championships in the program's six-year history.
Southeastern Oklahoma's Erika Bernal earned LSC North Division Preseason Player of the Year acclaim.
Bernal, a senior outfielder from Arlington, Texas, was a South Central Regional and LSC North first-teamer and claimed North Newcomer of the Year honors in 2009. She hit .330 with 68 hits including 14 homers and nine doubles, while starting all 66 games for the Savage Storm. Bernal had 47 RBI and scored a team-high 49 runs as SE tied the school and conference records with 53 wins.
Cameron's Carrie Harvey was named LSC North Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Harvey, the reigning LSC North Freshman of the Year, led the Aggies with a 19-8 record in the circle. The sophomore from Burkburnett, Texas, had a 2.14 earned run average in 196.2 innings with 174 strikeouts, which ranked amongst the top five in the league.
The top three spots were close as SE, the defending North Division champions, collected six first-place votes to finish second with 95 points, while UCO was third with 92 points and the three remaining first-place nods.
CU was fourth with 77 points, followed by Northeastern State and Southwestern Oklahoma tied in fifth with 38 and East Central seventh with 37.

South Division
Angelo State is the top choice to win the Lone Star Conference South Division title. The Rambelles collected 14 of the 20 first-place votes cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives.
ASU, who won the LSC Championship for the third straight time in 2009, went 50-10 and advanced to the national semifinals last season. The Rambelles made their second NCAA Division II National Championship appearance in three seasons after hosting the South Central Regional for the third straight season. ASU has won five South Division titles and four conference crowns.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's Cassie Anderson was tabbed LSC South Division Preseason Player of the Year.
Anderson, a senior outfielder from Splendora, Texas, led the league with an impressive .437 batting average, including a TAMUK and LSC record 26-game hitting streak, to earn LSC South and Daktronics All-American first team honors. She led the Javelina offense in nearly every category en route to setting school records for batting average and on-base percentage (.485). She was also a NFCA South Central Region first-team and NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-American second-team selection in 2009.
ASU's Chelsea Nelson claimed LSC South Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors.
Nelson, a senior from Highland Village, Texas, posted a 31-6 record with a 2.47 ERA, 176 strikeouts, three shutouts and three saves in 238 innings last season. She made 44 appearances with 34 stars and 24 complete games to earn Daktronics first team plus NFCA all-region and LSC South second-team acclaim. She was named 2009 LSC South Newcomer of the Year.
Abilene Christian, the defending South Division champions, finished right behind ASU in the poll with 122 points and five first-place votes, while West Texas A&M was third with 88 points and the remaining first-place nod.
Tarleton State was fourth with 69 points, followed by TAMUK in fifth with 66, Texas Woman's sixth with 54 and Eastern New Mexico seventh with 29.
