LSC Basketball Weekly Release: League play in full swing - LSC Office

Lone Star Conference action is in full swing, with the Midwestern State men and Tarleton State women both unbeaten in league play.  The Mustangs have won four straight, while the TexAnns have prevailed in their last seven contests.
  
The LSC men have a 70-51 overall record so far this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 14-14 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 3-1 opposed to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
  
The LSC women are 62-67 overall. The women’s squads are currently 15-11 combined versus Heartland teams, and 5-1 against the RMAC, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
  
The LSC champion will be the regular season winner determined by conference games, while the postseason tournament winner is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament set for March 6-9 in Allen, Texas.



NCAA BASKETBALL STATISTICS (through games 01/03)

Men: West Texas A&M is second in the nation in scoring defense (54.0).
Men: Texas A&M-Kingsville is second in field-goal percentage defense (35.9) and third in three-point field-goal percentage defense (25.1).
Men: WT’s Donald Sims is second in field-goal percentage (71.8).
Women: Tarleton State is fifth in field-goal percentage (47.1).
Women: Tarleton’s Kiara Wright is third in field-goal percentage (62.4) and fifth in rebounds per game (12.5).

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Donald Sims, West Texas A&M University, SR, Forward, Chester, South Carolina, Chester HS

Sims continued to lead a potent WT offensive as he averaged 24.0 points per game and 14.5 rebounds during the Christmas holiday as the Buffs went 2-0 with wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State and Hillsdale Baptist. Sims, a senior from Chester, S.C., recorded a career high 28 points to go along with 13 rebounds against OPSU on Dec. 29 followed by a 20 point and 10 board performance against Hillsdale Baptist to register his 5th double-double of the season.

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Corbin Thomas, Midwestern State University, SR, Forward, Chicago, Ill., Seton Academy HS

Thomas averaged 12.7 points and 10 rebounds a game to help LSC-leading Midwestern State to three league road wins over Eastern New Mexico, Abilene Christian and Angelo State as the Mustangs improve to 6-0 in conference for the second straight season. The senior transfer from Missouri State connected 9-of-11 shots from the field to finish with 20 points and eight rebounds against ENMU before going for eight points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocked shots and a steal in a 72-71 win over Abilene Christian. Thomas closed the holiday break by notching his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds with a blocked shots in MSU’s 65-55 win at Angelo State. Thomas’ presence played a key role in the Mustangs defensive effort that limited the opposition 59.7 points and a 36.8 opponent shooting percentage.

WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Kiara Wright, Tarleton State University, JR, Center, Pittsburg, Texas, Pittsburg HS

Wright was a dominant force for the TexAnns in their return to LSC action in 2013. The junior center averaged a double-double for week against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Incarnate Word with 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. She shot .765 from the floor - missing only four shots in two games at 13-17 - and was an 86 percent free throw shooter. After a 13-point, eight-rebound effort against the Javelinas on Wednesday, she recorded a career-high 25 points at the McDermott Center Saturday against Incarnate Word to go along with her 12 rebounds in the win. She also had six assists, two blocks and a steal for the week.

WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Andrea Carter, Midwestern State University, SO, Forward, Angleton, Texas, Angleton HS

Carter averaged 12.0 points, 7.7 rebounds with 4.0 steals and 1.0 blocks for in helping the No. 25 Mustangs to a 2-1 week on the road in Lone Star Conference play. The 5-10 sophomore from Angleton, Texas, chalked up her sixth double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 rebounds at Abilene Christian, while posting 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds in Midwestern’s first win at Angelo State since 1997. Carter also collected five steals in each contest. For the week she shot 47.8 percent from the floor (11-of-23) and 77.8 from the line (14-of-18), while 17 of her 23 rebounds in the three games were defensive boards.
