Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter and Tarleton State's Carla Cooper were named Lone Star Conference Golfers of the Week for their performances this season, the league office announced today.

Alex Carpenter, Abilene Christian, Fr., Little Rock, Ark./Arkansas Baptist HS
Carpenter won his second tournament of the spring season Monday when he captured the individual title at the UST Texas Intercollegiate in Fort Worth. ... Carpenter, who last week won the Red River Collegiate individual title, fired a two-round total of 136, including an opening-round 66 at the par-72 Hawks Creek Golf Course layout in Fort Worth. ... Carpenter’s individual championship helped his team to a second-place finish behind Oklahoma City University, the nation’s top-ranked NAIA team.
WOMEN’S
Carla Cooper, Tarleton State, Jr., Arlington, Texas/Bowie
Cooper won the Ashland Desert Invitational which had six Top 20 teams in the nation competing in the seven-team event. Cooper shot a 77 on day one and then a two-under par 70 on day two to win the event. The TexAnn is No. 6 in the nation in par four scoring with a 4.26 average and No. 14 in sub-par strokes per round. In Tarleton’s events so far this spring, Cooper has led the team as the TexAnns have won two events along with a third-place team finish. The junior from Arlington has finished second once and also tied for fourth. Cooper is averaging 75.4 strokes for the first round and 75.8 strokes for the second round to average a total of 151.2 strokes per tournament, the best on the squad.

Golf Other Top Performers
Travis Keeley, East Central, shot a 5-over par for two rounds and captured medalist honors at the Texas A&M-Commerce Crawford-Wade Lion Invitational on March 2 at the par-72 Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Texas. Keeley fired a 2-over 74 in the opening round on Monday and finished with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday. He showed consistency throughout the two rounds as he registered par on 29 holes. He edged out teammate Zac Pool and four others by two strokes. Keeley’s effort helped fuel ECU to the team championship. Keeley tied for 13th place at the season-opening Henderson State Tournament on Feb. 23rd, but did carve out an even-par 72 in the opening round of the two-round event.
Raelyn Smith, Angelo State, picked up where she left off last season with six top five finishes so far this season including taking medalist honors at the Cheddar’s UCO Classic Oct. 5-6, 2009 and the ASU Make-Up Oct. 19-20, 2009. She helped lead the Rambelles to team titles in the ASU Make-UP and the Pepsi Lion Invitational last week in Pottsboro, finishing in third in the medalist standings. In the UCO Classic, Smith shot a career-low 65 and a career two-day total of 136.
Kylee Johnson, Cameron, had a fantastic week for the Cameron Aggies as she led the squad to a 4th place finish out of 16 schools. She led the field at the Texas A&M-Commerce Invitational after day one, and finished the event in 2nd place. Her two-round score was 152 (76-76). Johnson finished with the event’s best par three scoring average (3.00, E), the fourth-best par four scoring average (4.30, +6), the second most birdies (4), the second most pars (21), and the second best par five scoring average (5.25, +2). She would have finished in a tie for first if it weren’t for an unfortunate two-stroke penalty. During the final round Johnson mistakenly hit a St. Mary’s ball, because both competitors’ balls were the same brand and number with similar markings, and were hit in the same area. The penalty forced Johnson to add two strokes to her round score.
