Mustangs make more history, move to No. 3 final regular season NABC poll
Midwestern State made more history Tuesday as the Mustangs surged ahead to No. 3 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Division II poll. The national ranking is the highest in school history improving on the No. 5 ranking that the 1998-99 squad carried on the week of Dec. 21, 1998. MSU has been ranked in each of the last 14 reporting periods which also is the longest any team in program history has toted a national ranking. The Mustangs have been ranked amongst the top 10 for each of the last six weeks.
At 28-2, Midwestern is guaranteed of finishing with the best winning percentage during a single season in school history and is three games shy of matching the 1974-75 club for most victories in a season. That year the then-Indians were 31-6 and advanced to the NAIA national championship game.
Midwestern hosts the NCAA Division II South Central Regional beginning Saturday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs drew Incarnate Word, winners of its last 10 games, in the opening round. The game tips off at 6 p.m.
