LSC Track and Field Outlook – 2010: Angelo State
When looking at the track and field outlook for Angelo State, you have to look long and hard at the incredibly dominant performance of their women’s team in winning the Lone Star Conference. In 2009, the Angelo State women won the LSC by 156 points. In fact, if you added up the other 5 schools in the LSC, Angelo still beat them all added together 331-314! That is the kind of domination that used to be associated with ACU. It looks to me like the Angelo teams will still be contenders on both the men’s and women’s side.
WOMEN – they lost some great kids from 2009, including 2 throwers to together scored 66 points at the conference meet, those kind of points are hard to make up! However, the Angelo women do return the most talented athlete in the LSC – Aisha Adams – who scored personally scored 42 points at the LSC meet!
LOSSES: Culley Jo Dawson (1st in the Hammer and discus, 2nd in SP, 3rd in the javelin – 34 points lost); Adree Lakey (1st shot put, 2nd in the javelin and hammer; 3rd in the discus – 32 points); Kyndel Howell (4th HJ, 5th LJ and 100H, 5th javelin for 9 points – an excellent heptathlete); Danielle Dorsey (2nd for PV – 8 pts); Whitney Law (4th in the PV – 4 pts), and Danielle Dorsey (6th 10K and 7th 5K – 1 point).
RETURNING: The amazing Aisha Adams (1st 400H, HJ, TJ, LJ and 5th in the SP – she also scored a boatload of points at the national meet, including the heptathlon and was 3rd in the Texas Relays heptathlon); Celethia Byrd (1st 200, 2nd 100 – 18 points); Kris Crockett (2nd 400H, 3rd LJ, 5thTJ for 16 points); Jennifer Flanery (5th Steeplechase for 2 points); Brittney Heath (1st 1500, 2nd 800, 4th 5K for 22 points); Carmen Herrera (4th TJ, 5th 400H for 6 points); Sara Hooker (finalist in the 400, but did not finish); Paige Massengill (2nd 1500, 5K, 10K for 24 points); April Phillips (5th in the 1500 for 2 points); Alyssa Priest (6th 1500 for 1 point); Cathryn Rittenberry (3rd TJ and 6th 100H for 7 points); Chrystal Ruiz (2nd 100H, 3rd 400H, 5th PV, 6th LJ, 7th HJ for 17 points); Jayda Spencer (5th Discus, 7th javelin, 9th hammer – big shoes to fill of Dawson and Lakey)
KEY ADDITIONS: Kim Williams, from Roby (A state SP champ – another good small-town thrower); Rebekah Caffey, from Mason (3rd 100, 5th 200 at A state); Emeline Crutcher, from Wellman-Union (6th A 1600 and ran well in XC last fall); Jordan Moses, from Corpus Christi Flour Bluff (3rd Region IV-4A Discus) and Summer Sutherland (finished 3rd in the PV and the 100H at the 2A state meet for Crane.)

OUTLOOK: Probably not quite as dominant as 2009, but that team was a good a team as any in LSC history. Still a very seasoned team with good senior leadership. Some of their new kids could be very good, in another year or two. I think they will win the conference crown rather handily, but not by 156 points. Maybe only by 100, which will still be a good butt-whipping!
MEN – lost their best all-around athlete (Ryan McWilliams) and several other veterans from a 2009 team that finished 100 points behind ACU. This will still be a good team and they could still challenge weakened ACU for the top spot, but more than likely, they are fighting with Tarleton for 2nd.
LOST: Ryan McWilliams (1st 400H, 3rd LJ and 110H, 4th HJ for 26 points, also a superb decathlete); Jeremy Jones (2nd 400H, 4th 110H for 12 points); Chad Schaertl (1st hammer for 10 points); plus two others, Chase Moore and Raymond Hickem who place in conference in the past, but did not score in 2009.
RETURNING: Ryan Adkins (4th 100 for 4 points – this Texas Tech transfer has the chance of being a very good sprinter); David Browne (4th hammer, 5th Discus for 6 points); Brian Carroll (6th 5K and 10K for 2 points); Andrew Crookham (5th SP for 2 points); Shannon Cunningham (RS in 2009, but 3rd steeplechase in 2008); Trenton Dalton (3rd 400H for 6 points); Sam Gallander (won the 800 for 10 points); Nate Gonzales (was 3rd in the steeplechase in 2007, then did not score in either 2008 or 2009); Wade Goode (3rd SP for 6 points); Jake Halfman (4th in Decathlon and 6th LJ in 2008 – he spent last year at Texas Tech as a student assistant); James Howell (1st 400, 2nd 200 – the best returning sprinter in the LSC); Tyler Orlando (3rd Javelin and 4th PV for 10 points); plus, a bunch of kids who placed 7th-9th, just missing scoring (Nick Alejandro, Phillip Gonzalez, Randal Guinn, Steven Gundy, Terence Holland, Robert Hummingbird, and Nick Smith)
TOP NEWCOMERS: Tim Brock from Plains (6th A HJ); Isidra Garcia from Crane (3rd 2A 200); Hewitt Holmes, from Iraan (2nd A PV); Jeffrey Jones, from Houston Westside (4th in the extremely tough Region III-5A 300H ); Robert Malczewski, from Rowlett (1st 110H and 300H, 2nd HJ in the all-Garland ISD District 10-5A); Mark Slone, from Friendswood (4th TJ, 6th LJ in the 4A state meet) – a lot of kids with great upside.
OUTLOOK: Good core of returners, but they need some of those kids, particularly some of their throwers, who scored in one event to score in 2-3 events to make a real push toward catching ACU and staving off Tarleton for 2nd. Loss of McWilliams will hurt, but Angelo got a good group of newcomers, probably the best of anyone in the LSC. This team might could really challenge ACU in 2011, depending on how the new ACU coach recruits in the future.
