Northeastern State could be close to switching leagues, leaving the Lone Star Conference to join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, according to a source close to the NSU athletic department.

“The move could happen within the next two weeks,” the source told the Tahlequah Daily Press late Tuesday night.

According to a recent report in the Joplin Globe, a vote during the MIAA President’s Council meeting earlier in June expressed interest in pursuing league expansion. The MIAA, which voted eight to three in favor of expansion, is interested in growing from 12 to 16 teams. The MIAA will add its 12th member (Lincoln University of Missouri) today.

The schools rumored to be on top of the MIAA’s wish list include, NSU, Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Lindenwood University in St. Joseph, Mo., and Nebraska-Kearney.


ACU athletics register top-10 finish

Abilene Christian University finished ninth in the United States Sports Academy Director’s Cup standings for the 2009-2010 sports year.


Eight ACU programs reached the postseason and the men’s track team finished second at the NCAA Division II national meet. Individual golfer Cyril Bouniol won the D-II championships.

ACU had 616.75 points, it’s fourth highest total in the 14-year history of the Director’s Cup. ACU is the only D-II athletic program to finish in the top 15 each year.

Grand Valley State won its seventh straight championships. The Lakers won women’s soccer and were second in football, men’s cross country and women’s indoor track.


First Women's Golf Signees
Texas A and M-Kingsville women’s golf coach Noel Allen announced the program’s first recruiting class on Wednesday signing three incoming freshmen; Ashley Coy, Ashley Rivera and Brandy Rivera.

“In forming our 2010-11 golf team, I focused on finding great golfers who are also genuine people,” said Allen. “I wanted girls who will make an impact on our campus and community and be able to set the foundation for the kind of program we are creating. Winning is a tradition here and we can’t wait to contribute to more Javelina victories.”

Coy played scholastically at Bastrop High School. She was a part of two teams that advanced to the Regional Championships. As a senior, she shot a 76-77=153 to finish fifth in District 25-5A and posted a 183 total at the Regionals. “Ashley has a natural, powerful swing with a smooth touch around the greens,” said Allen. “She has the ability to compete with anyone she is paired with.”

Ashley and Brandy Rivera are twin sisters who hail from McAllen High School where they had excellent careers. The duo led McAllen to the District 30-5A championship in 2010. Ashley fired an 83-85=168 and finished second while Brandy posted an 88-81=169 to finish fourth. Each performed well at the Region IV-5A championships. Ashley shot an 82-87=169 while Brandy edged her out with an 81-83=164. They also led the team to wins at the LaJoya Invitational played at Martin’s Valley Ranch Golf Course and at the McAllen Invitational.

Allen had the following to say about Ashley, “Watching her play will tell you why she was top in her class in academics. She displays the same stoic consistency and hard work in the classroom and on the course.”

“Brandy is a class act golfer with a short game that allows her to score low,” said Allen. “She is dependable and has a positive nature that proves to be a huge asset.”

Allen is hoping to add a few walk-ons and junior college transfers before the season starts. The team opens up its season on September 14-15 at the Dallas Baptist Invitational.
