Abilene Christian’s Nick Jones has been selected to compete for Team USA at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Association’s Under 23-Track and Field Championships in Miramar, Fla., on July 9-11.
Jones, an Amarillo Tascosa graduate, was one of two chosen to throw the discus for the U.S. men’s team. Mason Finley of Salida, Colo., is the other. Overall, 78 athletes were selected for both the men’s and women’s team, which was announced on Friday.
Jones is a two-time Division II national outdoor champion in the discus, winning his second straight title on his final throw in 2009. He was redshirted this past season, though did compete in a few meets unattached.
Shrinking budgets force conference to consider options, but compromise is key

As many options to help defray travel expenses in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference exist as there are schools under consideration to join the conference. The RMAC is studying expanding to 16 or even 20 schools, but one suggestion was to actually go smaller.
“Adams (State) came up with a Colorado-only conference,” Mesa State College President Tim Foster said. “That would save a lot of money on travel. It wouldn’t be as competitive a conference, and one reason we play sports is to be competitive. And it leaves Nebraska and New Mexico in the lurch.”

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is looking to get bigger so it can get smaller.

“I think the basic concept, if it works, and we’ve got to prove that it works, is by getting bigger we can get smaller by not playing everybody,” RMAC Commissioner J.R. Smith said last week after a long weekend of conference meetings. That’s the premise. We’ve got a lot of data to collect and see if anybody fits that profile. It may not be.”
Division II dominoes beginning to fall

As speculation continues about changes in NCAA Division II area conferences, the Lone Star Conference made the first move.
The University of Incarnate Word officially became a Lone Star member on Thursday, becoming the 28th school to join the league in its 79-year history. The LSC Council of Presidents extended an invitation to Incarnate Word in January 2009, and the Cardinals will start Lone Star competition this fall. Ironically, Incarnate Word will be the only school that plays all 16 sports offered by the Lone Star.
Incarnate Word, located in San Antonio, has been a member of the Heartland Conference since 1999 and advanced 36 teams to NCAA postseason play.
“There will be challenges in travel,” UIW athletics director Mark Papich said in a press release. “And we will be competing for positions in postseason play in a larger conference.
“We, however, had reached the point that with the inception of football (in 2009) at Incarnate Word, it was in the interest of the university to find a place, a conference to support that initiative.”

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M head basketball coach Rick Cooper has announced that six new recruits will attend WTAMU and play for the Buffs during the upcoming 2010-11 season.
“It’s always exciting to add new talent to your team,” coach Cooper said. “We really believe that each of these young men will be able to contribute in a positive manner to our ball club next season.”
The class, comprised of three guards and a pair of forwards, includes: Courtney Carr, 6-7, forward from Selma, Ala.; Lionel Foster, 6-1, guard from Houston, Texas; Greg Grant, 6-6, forward from Richmond, Va.; David Henderson, 6-0, guard from Chandler, Ariz.; Sterling Jones, 6-2, guard from Houma, La.; and Rod Little, 6-2, guard from Moss Point, Miss.
They will join a group of returnees consisting of guards Jordan Ashmore, LaDarius Hall, Joe Mincey and forwards Kendall Cogburn, Alex Davis, Jacquiese Holcombe, Justin Tubb and Mason White.
2010-11 WT MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWCOMERS:
Courtney Carr, Forward, 6-8, Selma , Ala. – This forward transfers to WT from Shelton State Community College , where he averaged 12.4 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game, and 1.9 blocks. He was named to the 2009-10 NCJAA All-America team as an honorable mention selection.
Coach Cooper: “Courtney will be one of the most athletic players on our team. We expect him to come in and make an immediate impact on our team.”
Lionel Foster, Guard, 6-1, Houston, Texas - Foster transfers from Arkansas-Little Rock, where he averaged 2.1 points per game, four assists per game, and 2.6 rebounds per game. Originally from Houston , Texas , he starred at Alief Hastings High School , earning the District 19-5A Defensive Player of the Year.
Coach Cooper: “Lionel is a strong and very quick guard. He handles the ball extremely well and knows how to create opportunities to get his teammates open. He will also be a key on the defensive end for us.”
Greg Grant, Forward, 6-6, Richmond , Va. – Grant is a Virginia native who transfers from Manatee Community College , where he averaged 8 points per game and 6 rebounds per game.
Coach Cooper: “Greg has great size and should be really tough underneath the bucket. We feel his best basketball is ahead of him.”
David Henderson, Guard, 6-0, Chandler, Ariz. – Henderson joins the Buffs’ program as a transfer from Mesa Community College, where he averaged 4.2 points per game, 5.5 assists per game, and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Coach Cooper: “David has a very high basketball IQ. He has the knack of being able to distribute the ball to the right guy at the right time. He comes from a very successful program and knows how to win.”
Sterling Jones, Guard, 6-2, Houma, La. – Jones transfers to WT from Shelton State Community College, where he averaged 14.5 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Coach Cooper: “ Sterling really knows how to score in a variety of ways. He comes from a well-respected program that has won 60 games over the past two years. We are really excited about what he will add to our team.”
Rod Little, Guard, 6-2, Moss Point, Miss. – Little comes to the WT program from Pearl River Community College, where he averaged 6.8 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Coach Cooper: “Rod is a big, strong guard that is going to be able to come in and play every guard position for us. He has versatility that will allow him to be a great addition to our program on both ends of the floor.”
