Tuesday’s announcement from Southeastern that the school would be leaving the Lone Star Conference to join a new conference with Southwestern, East Central, and six Arkansas schools caught SE football coach Ray Richards just a little bit off guard.
“It was kind of surprising,” Richards said. “Of course, I had heard the talk about Central Oklahoma and Northeastern getting out, so obviously the rumors were flying around.
“Then when everything went down with the Arkansas schools getting out of the Gulf South, everything just happened very quickly.”
Richard is excited, but has mixed emotions about the move.

KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville's football team just got an injection of depth at the receiver position.
Former Texas State wide-out and Weslaco High School star Mishak Rivas is officially on campus and will be in the mix when camp opens next month.
The news of Rivas' transfer came out in January, but the five-foot-seven inch, 155-pound speedster didn't take part in spring drills and coaches weren't sure if he'd actually show up in the fall. But he arrived at school Friday and told Head Coach Bo Atterberry that he'll be ready to go in August.
"He'll give our other receivers a run for their money," he said. "With this addition, wide receiver will be the toughest position for anyone to make or be a starter."

KINGSVILLE - Marc Heinecke was hired as Texas A&M-Kingsville's first ever full-time Strength and Conditioning Coach, and already he is raising the bar for Javelina athletes.
A former Maryland assistant, he has been a part of putting multiple former Terrapins into the NFL, including Shawn Merriman, Vernon Davis, and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
To me it's not important for them to be walking around with 20 inch biceps, for me it's all about the lower body and the hips. I am big with the power cleans and snatches and that's where you will see the biggest advancements in athleticism," said Heinecke.
Cort Johnson Kicks His Way to Another Day

Cort Johnson isn't going to unseat incumbent Mike Scifres. However, that doesn't mean he should be overlooked during training camp. Johnson will keep Scifres fresh into the season while he auditions for the other 31 teams in the league. As Johnson shares in this exclusive interview, it is not a bad gig.
Cort Johnson knew he was not going to get drafted. He graduated from Div. II West Texas A&M in 2008 and spent last season out of football, so his only chance was to catch on as a free agent. He expected that route to carry him to Tampa Bay, as he had worked out for the Bucs a week before the draft. However, his plans quickly changed.
Shortly before the draft, the Bucs contacted Johnson and told him they would not be adding a punter. Then, on the third day of the draft, Tampa Bay spent its sixth-round pick on Virginia Tech punter Brent Bowden.
"I was actually OK with that," said Johnson of Tampa Bay's double-talk. "The day before the draft [Chargers special teams coach] Steve Crosby called me, so that gave me some relief, because I did not know what was going to happen."
Five awarded LSC Degree Completion Scholarships

Five Lone Conference student-athletes were chosen to receive an award from the Lone Star Conference Degree Completion Scholarship program for 2010-11. Northeastern State’s Sarah Millar, Southeastern Oklahoma’s Crystal Trussell and Cole Jones, along with West Texas A&M’s Kayla Sisco and Mollie Peterson are the scholarship recipients for the program’s second year. These five student-athletes collectively have an average grade point average of 3.5, with four of the five boasting a 3.3 GPA or better.
“This class of scholarship recipients is no doubt deserving of this special recognition and financial assistance. Each of these five student-athletes has not only excelled while representing the Lone Star Conference in athletic competition, they’ve all demonstrated an ability to succeed in the classroom, on campus and in the community,” said Stan Wagnon, LSC commissioner. “We’re proud of this year’s recipients and confident they will capitalize on the opportunities created through this program.”
The purpose of the LSC Degree Completion Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance for completion of a first baccalaureate degree to deserving student-athletes in the conference. A total of $11,000 was distributed again this year, bringing the sum to $22,000 in two years. The funding is made possible through the NCAA Conference Grant program.
