New Orleans Saints Q&As: Wide receiver Andy Tanner

Andy Tanner is a wide receiver in his rookie season with the Saints. Tanner played college football at Midwestern State, a Lone Star Conference school with about 6,300 students. Tanner was chosen Lone Star Conference South Division Receiver of the Year as a senior in 2009. He also set Midwestern State single-season records with 75 receptions for 1,186 yards and 12 touchdowns that year and is No. 1 in school history with 20 career touchdown receptions. Tanner signed a three-year free-agent deal with the Saints in May after participating in the team's rookie minicamp. He recently spoke with staff writer Rachel Whittaker.

Rivals turned teammates hit gridiron again

In high school Jordan Nichols and Jacob Hinojos were fierce rivals, testing each other along the line of scrimmage once a season.

Now roommates and teammates at West Texas A&M, the pair will get their first taste of collegiate-level competition today when they compete for the North squad at the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

“It’s a big honor,” said Nichols, who spent the last three seasons as a starting offensive lineman at Frenship. “I’ve grown up watching that game on TV and seeing a lot of great players come through, so I’m excited.”

The West Texas A&M junior running back, a transfer from Los Medanos College in California, looks to be a home run threat every time he touches the ball, at least on video. And he looks especially dangerous at catching the screen pass, the Buffs' bread and butter on offense.

Loyd brothers to play for D-II Midwestern State

I haven't found anything official, but I've been told by reliable sources that former BYU guard Michael Loyd Jr. and his brother Kevin Loyd will play basketball this coming season for Midwestern State, a Division II school in Wichita Falls, Tex. The Mustangs finished the 2009-10 season with a 31-3 mark, the best in team history, and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the D-II Top 25. They lost in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.

Mike Loyd, with his explosive speed and athleticism, was key in several BYU wins this past season. He was released from the team in April. Younger brother Kevin Loyd played at Grambling for the past two seasons. Both will be juniors with two years of eligibility remaining, and both should be big additions to the roster of Mustangs head coach Grant McCasland.
