ACU HIRES NEW HEAD SOFTBALL COACH

ABILENE – ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley announced Thursday that he has hired Bobby Reeves as the Wildcats' new head softball coach. Reeves will begin his duties Monday.

"We are very excited to name Bobby Reeves as the new leader for the women's softball program," Mosley said. "We have had some recent success in the program and I believe that his leadership and personality will be instrumental in re-establishing our program as a conference, regional and national contender.

"Coach Reeves brings a wealth of experience in softball and baseball – particularly in the area of pitching – that will be very exciting as he leads and serves the student-athletes in our program," Mosley continued. "His excitement and passion was evident in our conversations with him and we are excited to have him join the ACU family and our pursuit to establish ACU as a consistent national contender."

Reeves spent the last two seasons as the assistant coach at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., helping the Bison to a combined record 57-49 over those two seasons. In 2009, Harding finished 32-25 and reached the Gulf South Conference Post-Season Tournament.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity that's been presented to coach at ACU," Reeves said. "It's exciting for me and my family to be able to return to Texas, and West Texas in particular.

"I've always been impressed with Abilene and Abilene Christian," he continued. "ACU has always had tremendous facilities and great success, and I think this is going to be a great experience."

After serving as an assistant coach at Texas Tech from 1997-99 when the Lady Raiders went a combined 115-79-1, Reeves went to Texas State in 2000 where he led the Lady Bobcats to a 35-24 record in his only season there. The 35-24 record was the best record in the 16-year history of the program.

Reeves, 53, was then hired as the head softball coach at Texas Tech where he served from 2001-04. He finished his four seasons there with a 94-111 mark, including a 37-24 mark in 2001 that included a trip to the Big 12 Tournament championship game and the NCAA regional tournament. During his four seasons as the head coach, Reeves coached one all-America player, six all-region performers and eight all-Big 12 Conference selections. He also coached eight academic all-Big 12 players and each of his teams carried a combined GPA of at least 3.0.

Prior to his first stint at Texas Tech, Reeves served as an assistant baseball coach at Lubbock Christian University for two seasons, helping lead the Chaparrals to one Sooner Conference championship. After leaving Texas Tech he went into private business until becoming the head softball coach at Shallowater High School in 2007. He then went to Harding for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

ABILENE -- While in the middle of summer recruiting and getting ready for upcoming 2010 football season, ACU head coach Chris Thomsen sat down for a question-and-answer session about his team and his expectations for the upcoming year:

Lance Fleming:  Talk about where you're program is in the middle of the summer?  How do you feel everyone is progressing and working  right now?

Chris Thomsen:  We've got a lot of guys back in the summer working out, and seeing them around the building their attitude seems very good.  They're focused and working hard.  I think they all sense that we can have a really good team, and they want to carry that through the summer.  The summer is such a critical time in their development and I believe the attitude is good.  We're not able to get out there and watch them or work them out, but you can sense their attitude when they're here in the building that their motivated and ready to go.

LF:  I heard you say at the end of last year that you believed that this 2010 team could be your best team.  What gives you that kind of confidence in these guys?

CT:  Mainly because we have 25 seniors and most of them have been with us for four years.  They've had four years in the playoffs to look back and really learn what it takes.  They've all made some adjustments in their work habits and in their approach to each other.  I believe this team has great chemistry already.  There's a trust factor there, and I believe that's critical to winning.

Texas coach Blake Feldt wishes he could have brought all of his title-winning Pilot Point seniors to Wichita Falls this week.  The two Bearcats who will represent their state in the 73rd annual Oil Bowl are more than deserving to be here.

Jarman Johnson was Class 2A’s Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 2,985 yards and 41 touchdowns. Seth Tilley was an all-state quarterback who set school passing records.  Saturday night’s all-star game offers the two best friends one last opportunity to play for a coach they respect and admire.

“I won a state championship with him,” said Johnson, who is headed to Tarleton State in the fall. “Why not go win something for your state with him.”

“To have the opportunity and the experience to play in this game with those two guys, to look out there and see that black helmet with the ‘PP’ on it, it’s a great experience for me,” Feldt added. “It’s something that I’ll always remember.”

While every player in the Oil Bowl gets to wear his school’s helmet one last time, the Bearcats’ black helmets have a sentimental decal with the initials HMD on them.

Those letters stand for Henry Melvin Davis, Johnson’s father who passed away with colon cancer the week before Pilot Point’s state semifinal game.
