Bouniol, Adams named LSC Athletes of the Year
Abilene Christian’s Cyril Bouniol and Angelo State’s Aisha Adams were selected as the 2010 Lone Star Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively. The awards were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league’s sports information directors.
ACU’s Bouniol claimed LSC top male athlete recognition after winning the individual national title in golf. ASU’s Adams earned the honor of top female athlete in the conference after helping the Rambelles win the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship.
Bouniol received the most votes followed by Central Oklahoma wrestling standout Dustin Finn and Midwestern State football star Zack Eskridge. Adams grabbed the women’s award ahead of MSU softball star Katie Petersen and Tarleton State golf standout Carla Cooper.
Bouniol became the second ACU player to win the individual national championship in men's golf with a six-stroke victory (current PGA Tour veteran Jeev Singh won in 1993). The junior was voted a PING first team all-America and PING first team all-region selection after sharing individual medalist honors at the conference tournament, as ACU won its first team title since 1995. Bouniol then went on to finish second at the regional tournament to earn a berth in the national tournament.
State schools considering leaving GSC
The cost of doing business in the Gulf South Conference has the league’s six Arkansas schools exploring new pastures.
The presidents of six of the state’s NCAA Division II colleges - Arkansas Tech, Arkansas-Monticello, Southern Arkansas, Harding, Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State - have entered into formal discussions with three Oklahoma-based schools in the Lone Star Conference about forming a new league.
Arkansas-Monticello Chancellor Jack Lassiter identified the three Oklahoma schools as Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southwestern Oklahoma State and East Central University on Tuesday.
Lassiter and Arkansas Tech President Robert C. Brown said finding a more economically feasible model of operating has driven the discussions. The proposed conference would becloser geographically than the GSC, which has football-playing schools in Georgia ...

One person with direct knowledge of the situation said “it is a 99 percent a done deal” that the Arkansas schools are leaving.
Lone Star Conference Commissioner Stan Wagnon said there was no talk Monday at the conference’s presidents’ meetings of the Oklahoma schools splitting to form a new conference with any GSC schools.
“There was no information shared at all at our meetings,” Wagnon said. “I’ve heard the rumors, but I have had no official conversations about anything. I’ve had no official notification about anything. We’re in a holding pattern.”

Keith Baxter, athletics director at Southeastern Oklahoma University, said his school is always looking for new opportunities.
“There is merit to always looking out for your institution and athletic product,” he said.
