2009-10 LSC Scholar-Athletes announced
The annual Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners for 2009-10 were announced on Tuesday, with 29 student-athletes honored by league officials.  Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year.

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and must have exhausted their athletic eligibility.  Besides representing each of the league’s 15 member institutions, this year’s recipients represent 10 of the 16 sports that are sponsored by the conference.  Basketball, football, soccer and softball had the most Scholar-Athletes with five selections each.

The 2009-10 Scholar-Athletes led their respective teams to seven conference championships and two LSC divisional titles.  Texas is home for 19 of the recipients, with three from Oklahoma, two from Canada and one each from Arizona, Slovakia, Santiago, Australia and Denmark.

A&M-Commerce Women's Basketball Adds Seven
The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball coaching staff today
announced the addition of seven players to go along with earlier signees
Skylar Robertson and Bianca Stevenson.

The seven-person class is made up of four along the frontline and three in
the backcourt, in addition five are from the state of Texas, an individual
from California and an individual from Colorado.

³This is a group of young and explosive players that will add a tremendous
benefit our program,² said head coach Nicole Anderson. ³All have been
valuable scorers and contributors to their past teams. This first recruiting
class will add both depth and talent to the program. We look forward to
seeing them progress through the years. Along with our returnees, I feel
they will begin a strong consistent foundation for a winning tradition."

Apreia Booker, a 6-1 post from Texas City, was a four-year standout at Texas
City High School and for the last two years for Blinn Junior College. She
was an academic all-american at Blinn Junior College. At Texas City High
School, Booker was selected all-district on four occasions. As a senior, she
was named to first team All-Greater Houston area team and first team
all-county. As a freshman, in addition to first team all-district honors,
she was selected as the team MVP.

Kourtney Briscoe-Adams is a 5-7 guard from De Soto High School, where she
was a three-year letterwinner. During her senior year, she was a starter on
the district and regional champion team en route to honorable mention
all-district recognition. Plus, Briscoe-Adams made 41% of her 3-point field
goal attempts.

Danielle Dixon, a 5-5 guard, averaged 17.5 points a game en route to being
named an all-district selection as a senior. In addition, she earned team
recognition as the MVP, Offensive Player of the Year and Free Throw
Percentage leader. Dixon was also a two-year starter and four-year
letterwinner. As a junior, she had the top grade-point average on the team.
Dixon also ran hurdles on the track and field team as a freshman and as a
senior.

Kaneisha Flournoy is a 5-4 guard from Highlands Ranch High School in
Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Highlands Ranch High School was the number one
ranked 5A school in the state of Colorado. Flournoy was a two-year
letterwinner and starter on a team that won state titles as a freshman and
sophomore reached the final four as a junior and the elite eight as a
senior.

Abigail Leaupepe-tele is a 6-1 forward from Morse High School in San Diego,
California. She was a three-year starter on the basketball team.
Leaupepe-tele averaged double figure scoring during her senior year en route
to all-conference recognition. In addition to being a basketball standout,
she reached the state track and field meet in the shot put as a senior,
where she finished 19th.

Hannah Merle, a 6-1 guard/forward, comes to A&M-Commerce along with her
Arlington High School teammate, Danielle Dixon. Merle earned all-district
recognition as a junior. As a senior, she averaged 13 points and five
rebounds a game.

Shavon Walker, a 5-10 forward will transfer to A&M-Commerce after spending
the last two years at UT-Pan American. She will have two years of
eligibility remaining. Prior to attending UTPA, she was a three-year
letterwinner in basketball and track and field at Samuel Clemens High School
in Schertz, Texas. She averaged a double double in basketball, scoring 14.2
points and grabbing 10 rebounds a game. Walker was a first team all-district
selection as a senior.

1969 Golf Team to be Inducted
The 1969 Texas A&I golf team will be inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame this fall.  The induction will be September 18 in the Memorial Student Union Building.
   
The 1969 squad won the school’s only Lone Star Conference championships, captured the NAIA District 4 title and finished eighth in the NAIA national tournament.  The Javelinas won the conference title by 13 strokes and were eighth among 34 teams competing at the national meet.
   
Bill Evans, from Sinton, was the LSC and regional medalist was fourth in the national tournament, five strokes behind the medalist.
   
Jimmy Miller of Edna, was fifth in the LSC Tournament.
   
The other members of the team were Chris Delcambre from San Antonio (Edison), Chris Hill of New Braunfels and Fred Hoey of San Antonio (Highlands).  Pete Murray was the head coach of the team.  Murray has been inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame as a football coach.
   
The golf team becomes the second squad inducted into the Hall of Fame.  The 1959 football club was the first team inducted last fall.  The other members of the 2010 induction class will be announced at a later date.

Tim McCarty football camps set for June 16-18
The Tim McCarty Football Camps, under the direction of the East Central University football coaching staff, will be held June 16-18.  A camp for athletes, entering grades 9-12, will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hugo High School while a second camp for the same grades and time frame will be staged at ECU's Norris Field in Ada on Thursday, June 17^th.


These two high-energy, non-contact camps will allow players to develop and learn techniques and fundamentals on offense and defense from the ECU coaches. Passing, blocking, running, tackling, catching and defending are all skills that will be emphasized during each of the camps.  Additionally, campers will learn the value of teamwork as they utilize their new skills and compete in fast-paced games of 7-on-7 and Razzle Dazzle.

No pads are needed - just workout clothing (shirts, shorts and shoes) and a great attitude.  The cost for the camps on Wednesday and Thursday are $50 per camper. It is walk-up registration only as payment should be given in the form of cash or money order. The registration will begin at 8 a.m. each day.

Then on Friday, June 18^th, two camps for youth (boys and girls), entering the first through eighth grades, will be held at Norris Field with a morning session at 9 a.m. (for grades 1-5) and an afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. (grades 6-8).  The high-energy, non-contact youth camps allow younger football players to develop and learn techniques at all positions from the ECU coaches and many current Tiger football players. Passing, punting, blocking, running, tackling, catching, kicking, returning and defending are all skills that are emphasized during the camp.

The cost is $40 per camper for each session (morning and afternoon). It is walk-up registration only and the payment should be made in cash or money order.
