KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville sophomore wide receiver Sherman Batiste had a break out freshmen campaign for the Javelinas, leading them in touchdown receptions.
But if you had asked him where he'd be five years ago he would have never expected to be in Kingsville, since he and his family lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.

In a game where the longest touchdown drive was only 3 yards, there really wasn’t any big offensive star in the 73rd Oil Bowl. Hometown hero Eddie Aboussie was Texas’ leading rusher with 41 yards, but most of that came on a 25-yard run in the final minutes. Tucker Carter was the most effective of the three quarterbacks that Texas used. But 50 yards passing won’t get my vote. Neither will four catches for 29 yards — which Texas’ leading receiver, Clayton Cooper, had.
And I’m not voting for anyone from Oklahoma. The guys from up north blew an early 9-0 lead and lost 13-12 on Saturday night.
So I cast my vote for Seth Garza of Bowie as the game’s offensive MVP. And everyone else in the Memorial Stadium press box agreed.

West Texas A&M University athletic director Michael McBroom helped design what he called a "five-year strategic plan" for the overall women's and men's athletic programs.
Goal 3 of that plan, at the program's Web site gobuffsgo.com, is to "provide superior, championship-caliber athletic facilities for training and competition for the benefit and enjoyment of student-athletes, fans and our community."
Four earn Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors
Angelo State’s Aisha Adams and Celethia Byrd, and Abilene Christian’s Amos Sang and Ramon Sparks were selected as the 2010 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Year. The awards were announced Friday following a vote of the league’s head coaches.
The Rambelles Byrd and Adams picked up the top female track and field honors after helping spark ASU to its first ever NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Wildcats duo of Sang and Sparks claimed the top male track and field honors, respectively, by pacing ACU to a runner-up finish at the national championships.
Byrd won an individual national championship in the 400-meter dash and finished third in the 200-meter dash, a result that clinched the title for ASU, and anchored the 4x100-meter relay squad, which won in a school record fashion (3:38.88).
Adams had one of the best national meets in school history for the Rambelles scoring 36 points in six event finals. She was a seven-time All-American at the championship, claiming the individual title in the heptathlon for the second straight season and adding a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, third in the long jump, fourth in the triple jump, fifth in the high jump, sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and a title as part of the 4x100-meter relay squad which won in a school record 3:38.88. The senior was recently named National Female Track Athlete of the Year in NCAA Division II by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Sang won a pair of NCAA Division II national championships claiming both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter crowns to pick up all-America awards. He posted a nine-second victory in the 10k (30:04.98). In the 5000 meters, the senior was challenged and won by less than a second.
Sparks earned all-America status in both the triple jump and long jump. The junior placed third in the triple jump (51-7.25) and fifth in the long jump (24-5).
